CDC Is Now Retaliating Against Its Own Scientists For 'Wrong' Mask Research

In a congressional hearing last November on restoring trust in science, CDC Director Mandy Cohen kept evading questions on whether she would bring back mask mandates for toddlers.

“We have a lot of different tools to protect our children,” Dr. Cohen said during her cagey response.

Six days later, a BMJ journal published a study that found “mask recommendations for children are not supported by scientific evidence.”

Director Cohen’s scientific bumbling continued last week as her agency began fighting with CDC’s own researchers over another contentious declaration: N95 respirators work better than surgical masks. In recent years, mask advocates have shifted goalposts and demanded N95 respirators, which they claim perform better than surgical masks at stopping the COVID virus.

Not true say CDC’s own scientists, according to CDC documents I uncovered.

During a presentation last summer, a CDC expert stated there was no difference between N95 respirators and masks in stopping viruses. These findings have been supported by CDC scientists in a study CDC published on the agency’s website last November—just a few weeks before Director Cohen testified before Congress.

To shut down this controversy, CDC wrote a blog last week warning researchers that to suggest that facemasks and respirators are the same “is not scientifically correct.”

Soon after the pandemic started, the CDC began promoting masks to stop the spread of COVID. And it did so despite CDC publishing a May 2020 policy study in their own journal “Emerging Infectious Diseases” that did not find a “substantial effect” for masks in stopping the transmission of respiratory viruses.

CEO of major Nigerian bank killed in helicopter crash

The head of Access Bank Group, Herbert Wigwe, was aboard a helicopter that went down in California in the US on Friday

The CEO of Access Bank Group, one of Nigeria’s top financial institutions, Herbert Wigwe, perished in a helicopter crash near Nipton in southern California on Friday. Five more people who were also aboard the aircraft have been confirmed dead.

According to a statement released by the US Federal Aviation Administration, the Eurocopter EC 130 helicopter went down at around 10pm local time. It added that it would launch an investigation into the incident in conjunction with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported that the crash occurred near the border between Nevada and California. “It has been confirmed all six people on board the aircraft are deceased,” the authorities wrote without revealing their identities.

Prominent Nigerian-American economist and World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala claimed on Sunday in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that along with Wigwe, his wife and son were also killed in the crash. She added that the former president of the Nigerian stock exchange, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, also lost his life in the crash.

At a press conference on Saturday night, Michael Graham, a representative of the National Transportation Safety Board, told reporters that the charter flight operated by Orbic Air LLC was on the way to Boulder City, Nevada.

According to the official, several eyewitnesses reported adverse weather conditions at the time of the crash. They also mentioned seeing fire aboard the helicopter as well as downed power lines, Graham added.

“This is the beginning of a long process. We will not jump to any conclusions,” the NTSB representative said, adding that the helicopter was not required to have a cockpit voice recorder or flight data recorder.

Wigwe, who was 57, was widely seen as a leading figure in Nigeria’s banking sector. Established in 1989, his Access Bank became the largest in the country in 2018. Apart from acquiring other lenders at home, the financial institution has also been working to expand across other African nations in recent years, with plans to also launch a new banking service in Asia this year.

On top of that, Wigwe had served as executive director at another leading Nigerian bank, Guaranty Trust Bank. He was also working on opening his own university in Nigeria later this year.

In the wee hours of Saturday morning, X banned the account Defund Isreal Now, a non-governmental organization advocating for the Palestinian people against the ethno-imperialistic actions of Zionist Israel.

The nonprofit amassed a wide audience after the retaliation from Israel to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack. Jewish NGOs, acting similarly to Defund Israel Now, have yet to receive any retribution. That may be due to the supposed rise in antisemitism on the platform, prompting Musk to visit the Auschwitz concentration camp, accompanied by Ben Shapiro.

The perceived rise in antisemitism can be attributed to the growing isolationist and nationalist movements across the globe, particularly within the US, as its citizens are expected to ally themselves with Israeli action. These “antisemitic” acts within the tally include anti-Zionist sentiments. The two terms have been conflated to garner protection to the ethno-religious philosophy.

Still, that will not stop Jewish nonprofits and billionaires from coming down on an individual as hard as possible.

Dr. Eli David of Deep Instinct, a data protection company based in Tel Aviv and New York, is a wealthy Jewish Zionist entrepreneur who has felt it within his respects to coerce the banning and censoring of all opposition. The West needs to prepare for the conflict with Russia to last for “decades” and therefore must ramp up arms production quickly, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

“NATO is not looking for war with Russia. But we have to prepare ourselves for a confrontation that could last decades,” Stoltenberg warned this weekend in an interview with Germany’s Welt am Sonntag newspaper.

Thus, the NATO chief called for Western nations to increase production of weapons and ammunition, claiming that this is the only way in which Europe’s safety can be guaranteed and for Ukraine, which is not a member of the alliance, to continue its war with Russia. “The economy and industrial strength of the West far dwarfs that of Russia. So we have the means to surpass Russia in both production and investment,” the former Norwegian prime minister said, explaining that if the current opportunity is missed, Russia would benefit and Europe’s security would be at risk.

Despite Russia’s Vladimir Putin’s insistence during the interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson that Moscow has no intention of invading Poland, acknowledging that such a move would spark a Third World War, Stoltenberg warned that “if Putin wins in Ukraine, there is no guarantee that Russian aggression will not spread to other countries.”

The best defence for Europe then, he argued, is to invest in the militaries of Ukrainian and NATO members, saying: “Deterrence only works if it is credible. As long as we invest in our own security and remain united, we will continue to deter any form of aggression.”

The left-wing globalist politician said that he recognised that many European nations prefer to spend money on socialised medicine, welfare programmes, and education, but said that “our schools, our hospitals and our industries are also protected by our armed forces. That’s why it’s important to continue investing in our security.”

Many European nations, most notably Germany, the continent’s top economy, have long failed to live up to their NATO spending commitments, which require every member state to devote at least two per cent of their respective GDP towards military funding.

This issue was persistently raised by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who chided Germany for signing large oil and gas deals with Russia while demanding that American taxpayers foot the bill to protect them from potential Moscow aggression.

Russia Launches Dozens of Drone Strikes in Five Hour Barrage on Ukraine

Russian forces launched 45 drones over Ukraine Sunday in a five-and-a-half-hour barrage, officials said, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continued the reshuffle of his war cabinet as the war enters its third year.

In a statement, the Ukrainian air force said it had shot down 40 of the Iranian-made Shahed drones over nine different regions, including on the outskirts of the country’s capital, Kyiv.

The five-and-a-half-hour attack targeted agricultural facilities and coastal infrastructure, officials for Ukraine’s southern defense forces wrote on Telegram. They said that a strike in the Mykolaiv region had injured one person, sparking a fire and damaging nearby residential buildings.

Kyiv announced Sunday that former deputy defense minister Lt. Gen. Alexander Pavlyuk would become the new commander of Ukrain’s ground forces. The post was previously held by Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was named Thursday as the replacement for Ukraine’s outgoing military chief, Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

New presidential decrees also named Yurii Sodol, the former head of Ukraine’s marine corps, as the new commander of Ukraine’s combined forces; Brig. Gen. Ihor Skibiuk as commander of Ukraine’s air assault forces; and Maj. Gen. Ihor Plahuta as commander of Ukraine’s territorial defense forces.

Former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt and his wife committed legally assisted suicide by simultaneous euthanasia this week, the non-profit organisation founded by the ex-Dutch leader has revealed.

Public broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) reported on Friday that former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt (93), who led the Netherlands from 1977 to 1982, and his wife Eugenie van Agt (93) opted on Monday to take their lives in a joint act of euthanasia, which is legally permitted under medical supervision in the Western European nation.

Gerard Jonkman, the director of The Rights Forum non-profit founded by Van Agt in 2009, said that the former prime minister had discussed the option of assisted suicide after suffering a brain haemorrhage in 2019, saying that he said it was an “option if life and suffering became unbearable.”

Since then, Van Agt’s health, as well as his wife’s, steadily declined, according to Jonkman, who said: “His health became more and more fragile, and he wanted to focus his attention on his wife, children and grandchildren.” He said that their decision to commit assisted suicide hand in hand came from a feeling that they “couldn’t live without each other”.

Elon Musk is introducing his new right-wing fans to the idea of implementing a carbon tax, and it goes about as well as you would expect.

Over the last few years, Musk has become a sort of hero of the right.

Regardless of where you stand politically, it is a fascinating situation. I remember not too long ago when the right consistently attacked him for taking advantage of government subsidies at his companies.

A few years later, he buys Twitter, reinstates some previously banned conservative accounts, makes fun of Joe Biden and other democrats, starts to talk about “wokeness” and illegal immigration consistently, and now he is loved by the right.

Through this period, the once zealot climate change warrior who quit President Trump’s business council because he withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement, started talking a lot less about climate change and Tesla’s mission to accelerate to world’s transition to renewable energy.

On top of running six different companies, Tesla’s CEO is virtually a full-time political influencer now.

As you can imagine, it didn’t go too well.

Most of the top-voted comments underneath his post were responses that were quite negative.

I had to go down about 50 responses to see a positive response to Musk’s comment. It appears that for better or worse, Musk’s X profile is now dominated by his new right-wing fans.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) - Heavy police presence can be seen surrounding Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church after reports of an active shooter in southwest Houston on Sunday.

The video above is ABC13's 24/7 livestream.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a possible shooting at the megachurch near the Southwest Freeway shortly after 2 p.m.

The 2 p.m. Spanish-speaking service had just begun when chaos erupted. A witness told Eyewitness News that she heard several shots being fired while in the choir room.

"The whole church started praying and declaring Jesus' name," she said. "I was like, 'This might be the last time I get to pray, that I get to glorify the name of Jesus, so I'm going to do this.'"

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a possible suspect was shot by deputies. It is unclear if there is more than one suspect or if anyone has been detained.

ABC13 crews were at the church, where crowds of people, including children, could be seen evacuating the worship center. Churchgoers are being taken to Lamar High School to reunite with families after several were separated amid the havoc.

Video shared with Eyewitness News shows a perspective from inside the church when rapid gunfire can be heard, and people begin to scurry.

One man said he heard 20 to 30 gunshots when he ran out of the megachurch with his three young daughters. Authorities have not confirmed how many shots were fired or if there are any injuries.

The Houston Police Department warns drivers to avoid the area. As of 3 p.m., the feeder road near Highway 69 at Edloe Street was closed as authorities continued to investigate.

36th Armored Division transferred to Lebanese border amid intermittent fire with Hezbollah

Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi transferred the largest army division from the Gaza Strip to the border with Lebanon, where the Israeli army and Hezbollah are exchanging fire on a daily basis, Israeli media reported on Sunday.

Israeli Army Radio said that during recent discussions in the General Staff, the commander of the Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Yaron Finkelman, called for the 36th Division, the army's largest regular division, to remain in the central Gaza Strip for increasing military pressure on the Hamas movement.

However, the head of the Operations Division, Maj. Gen. Oded Basyuk, proposed removing the division from Gaza toward the north to replace the reserve forces, according to the radio.

The Israeli army has withdrawn from Gaza the 4th and 55th Reserve Brigades, the 7107th Combat Engineering Battalion, and the 13th Battalion of the Golani Brigade since late December.

Since Oct. 8 last year, the Israeli-Lebanese border has seen intermittent tension and sporadic exchanges of fire between the Israeli army on one side and Hezbollah and Palestinian factions on the other. This has resulted in fatalities and injuries on both sides and among Lebanese civilians.

A driverless taxi was set ablaze by an unruly crowd amid Lunar New Year celebrations on the streets of San Francisco Saturday night.

Vandals in the city’s Chinatown neighborhood surrounded the Waymo robotaxi before breaking the window and throwing fireworks inside, according to The San Francisco Standard.

It was unclear what prompted the lawless destruction of the autonomous vehicle, which was not carrying any passengers, according to the report.

The vandalism was caught on camera, and resulted in the car erupting in fire and smoke as crowds clogged Jackson Street near Grant Street.

After several people tagged the vehicle with graffiti, a man was seen smashing the windows with a skateboard before someone threw a firework inside.

“We are working closely with local safety officials to respond to the situation,” Waymo told the newspaper.

The vehicle had “recently dropped off a rider and was navigating to its next destination when the event occurred,” the company said, adding that it would resume services Sunday as revelers in the city headed to bars and parties to watch their hometown 49ers in the Super Bowl.

The company said no injuries were reported.

Waymo operates driverless taxis in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin, stating its mission is to “make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going.”

Minnesota authorities said the mayor of Winnebago and his adult son were arrested Thursday after police seized hundreds of marijuana plants at multiple homes.

The South Central Drug Investigation Unit, a multi-jurisdictional task force that operates in four southern Minnesota counties, said officers took Scott Robertson and his son Jacob Robertson into custody on charges related to marijuana cultivation.

No charges have been formally filed against Mr. Robertson or his son at this time, according to the state’s judicial database. Both men remain behind bars pending charges.

Police said they first launched an investigation into the mayor in early 2023.

Mr. Robertson won Winnebago’s mayoral race in 2021 via a write-in campaign. No other candidates filed to run for office for the city of about 1,400 people.

Pentagon chief in hospital due to ‘emergent bladder issue’

Lloyd Austin has sought urgent treatment for the second time this year

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalized over a medical emergency on Sunday, the Pentagon announced.

According to Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder, Austin was “transported by his security detail to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to be seen for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue.”

Austin is “retaining the functions and duties of his office,” the spokesman said, adding that Deputy Secretary Kathleen Hicks is on standby.(such bullshit! Again)

Ryder said that the White House and Congress have been notified about the hospitalization.

Austin underwent surgery to treat prostate cancer on December 22. He was then hospitalized for two weeks in early January due to “complications,” the Pentagon said at the time.

Police respond to ‘active shooter’ at Texas megachurch

Gunfire was heard at the Lakewood Church in Houston on Sunday, witnesses said

Several police units were dispatched following reports of a shooting at a large evangelical church in Houston, Texas on Sunday.

“There is an active situation involving shots fired at Lakewood. Law enforcement is on the scene,” pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church said in a brief statement on X (formerly Twitter).”Please pray for Lakewood and our community.”

Harris Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote on X that the “shooter is down.” He added that the suspect was shot by law enforcement.

The officer did not immediately say if anyone else was hurt.

The witnesses told local media that someone had opened fire as Spanish-speaking service was about to begin at 2 pm. One man was quoted by ABC13 News assaying that he heard 20 to 30 gunshots when ran out of the building.

The church has an average attendance of 45,000 people, according to the media. It was founded in 1959 by pastor John Osteen and is currently run by his son Joel.

The former US president had challenged Washington’s NATO allies over their failure to pay their share of the bloc’s defenses

Former US president Donald Trump’s disparaging comments about NATO members’ failure to pay their share of the bloc’s defense costs put the whole alliance at risk, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned in a statement on Sunday.

“Any suggestion that allies will not defend each other undermines all of our security, including that of the US, and puts American and European soldiers at increased risk,” he said, reiterating that the bloc remained “ready and able to defend all allies.”

More evidence of questionable experiments on civilians has beenuncovered in the city of Mariupol

The Russian city of Mariupol was a testbed for large-scale medical research on local civilians while under Ukrainian rule,a trove of recently discovered documents suggests.

RT’s Steve Sweeney visited a disused psychiatric ward in the city, which has been undergoing rapid reconstruction after being incorporated into Russia following a referendum in late 2022.

In December of last year, a construction team made a shocking discovery at the disused ward,finding documents as well as medication and medical equipment related to secretive researchconducted while the city was part of Ukraine.

The experiments took place for years in at least eight medical facilities across Mariupol, withleading Western biotech corporationsallegedly benefiting from them, according to the documents.

“We’ve found documents that suggested thousands of people have been involved in the experiments, with the trials carried out for major pharmaceutical companies,including Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline, and others. Blood and other samples were collected and then sent to labs and clinics in Europe and the US for testing. The results of which are unknown,” Sweeny explained.

The research was not only conducted on adults,but also on children and babies, the documents suggest. As well as being ethically questionable, the experiments on minors likely made the clinical trials illegal, a Russian doctor told RT on condition of anonymity.

While it’s difficult to track all the participants of the experiments, witnesses are now coming forward with their testimonies about the research. A local man whose mother took part in the trials claimed the research was not safe.

“My mother got sick, they gave her drugs. I asked her what medication she was taking, but she did not give me a clear answer. She said that the drugs were simply given from a white box. Her condition worsened over the course of a month and then she died,” the man told Sweeney.

Macron scraps Ukraine visit due to ‘security issues’ – media

The French president earlier promised finalize a security deal with Kiev

French President Emmanuel Macron has postponed his planned visit to Ukraine due to security concerns, the French magazine Challenges reported on Sunday.

According to the report,the trip was scheduled for February 13-14.Macron was expected to visit Odessa – Ukraine’s top Black Sea port – and later arrive in Kiev, the magazine said. The French government has not commented on the reported delay.

The exact dates of foreign leaders’ trips to Ukraine are typically not revealed in advance.

Macron last visited Kiev in June 2022, four months after Russia launched its ongoing military operation in the neighboring country. New French foreign minister, Stephane Sejourne, made a visit to the Ukrainian capital in January, where he met with President Vladimir Zelensky and promised more support.

Macron announced last month that France would provide 40 additional SALP-EG air-launched cruise missiles and “hundreds of bombs.” He said thathe would “finalize” the bilateral security agreement during an upcoming trip Ukraine.

A similar pact Kiev had previously signed with London stipulates that Ukraine will receive “swift and sustained security assistance, modern military equipment across all domains”in the event of a Russian attack in the future.

Russia summoned the French ambassador in January, protesting about “the dozens of Frenchmen” fighting in the Ukrainian army. The French Foreign Ministry has denied Moscow’s claim that it was sending “mercenaries in Ukraine.” At the same time, Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu said that Paris cannot stop “French civilians” from traveling to Ukraine and joining the fight on Kiev’s side.

In early February, France summoned the Russian ambassador in Paris due to the death of two French aid workers in an airstrike in Ukraine.

"Earlier today, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III was transported by his security detail to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to be seen for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue. He is still at the hospital and receiving treatment. At approximately 4:55 pm today, Secretary Austin transferred the functions and duties of the office of the Secretary of Defense to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks. The Deputy Secretary of Defense has assumed the functions and duties. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the White House, and Congress have been notified," Ryder stated.

Additional updates, the Pentagon noted, will be provided.

Austin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December and had a prostatectomy on December 22. At the time, there was controversy due to the fact that he had not notified the president or the administration as to his condition once complications developed and he was readmitted to Walter Reed.

Austin's prognosis is "excellent" per his doctors.

Austin's admittance to Walter Reed on Sunday means that his planned Tuesday trip to Brussels may be postponed, though no word has been given on that.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Three people were fatally shot Monday in the offices of a shipping company near Athens and the suspected gunman also took his life as police special forces prepared to confront him, authorities said.

The shooting occurred in the shipping company office in Glyfada, a seaside suburb of the capital. The alleged gunman, an unidentified company employee, entered the building armed with a shotgun and handgun, according to several witnesses.

Police spokesperson Consantia Dimoglidou said the owner of the company was among the victims.

“The suspected perpetrator, who worked for the family, was found dead in a different area from the three deceased people at the company. He had his assault weapon next to him and appears to have shot himself in the head,” Dimoglidou said.

She said police and special forces officers had entered the building before the suspected shooter was found and had been making sure other employees were moved safely out of the building.

Few businessmen understand the arcane details of Delaware's Chancery Court system like Phil Shawe, the CEO of translation and language services firm TransPerfect.

For nearly a decade, Shawe has been mired in Delaware's specialized business court system, which is in the spotlight after a judge there voided Tesla CEO Elon Musk's record $55 billion pay package last week.

Musk responded by vowing to hold a shareholder vote to move Tesla's incorporation to Texas, where the company has its physical headquarters, fuming in a post on X: 'Never incorporate your company in the state of Delaware.'

Shawe, who reincorporated TransPerfect in Nevada after facing his own infamous court decision in Delaware, told DailyMail.com in a recent phone interview that he agrees with Musk, and believes no business is wise to remain in the Blue Hen State.

'I was taught in business school that a Delaware corporation was the gold standard, but I think that's changing,' said Shawe. 'This is a really archaic system that is dangerous for corporate America.'

Although he moved TransPerfect's incorporation to Nevada in 2018, Shawe is still tangled in litigation in Delaware, primarily related to attorneys fees.

'Get out of the tentacles of Delaware jurisdiction as soon as possible,' he warned. 'Because this is their industry, like gambling is to Nevada or timber is to Maine — this is their industry, and they they know how to keep the revenue stream going.'

Although it sounds like something from the pages of a Charles Dickens novel, Delaware's Chancery Court long played a role in attracting businesses to the state, with the promise of speedy resolution for complex business disputes.

Originally, New Jersey was known as America's top corporate haven, thanks to laws in the state that limited the liability of officers and directors.

In the early 20th century, New Jersey repealed those protections, and companies fled to Delaware, which was one of the few other states at the time that allowed corporations to form without a special act of the legislature.

Ever since, Delaware has reigned supreme as the destination for incorporation, with two-thirds of the Fortune 500 filing there, in part due to the appeal of its specialized commercial litigation system.

Delaware's Chancery Court does not use juries, and the judges who decide its cases, known as chancellors, have typically spent their entire careers in corporate litigation.

Few other states have a separate court system devoted specifically to equity law, meaning that complex shareholder lawsuits could end up in front of judges who hear all manner of cases, and be decided by juries of laypersons.

Corporations and their executives tend to find reassurance in Delaware's well-developed body of case law, which offers guidance as to what actions and decisions will hold up against lawsuits.

But Shawe argues that apparent feature of Delaware's system is actually a bug.

'In reality, having all that case law just gives the chancellor a broad brush to do whatever they want,' he said.

'They'll tell a legal clerk, "Go find me a case that supports this position." And because they have a large body of case law they can pretty much do whatever they want.'

Planetary nebulae like Heckathorn-Fesen-Gull 1 (HFG1) and Abell 6 in the constellation Cassiopeia are remnants from the last phase of a medium sized star like our Sun. In spite of their shapes, planetary nebulae have nothing in common with actual planets. Located in the bottom left part of the featured photo, HFG1 was created by the binary star system V664 Cas, which consists of a white dwarf star and a red giant star. Both stars orbit their center of mass over about half an Earth day. Traveling with the entire nebula at a speed about 300 times faster than the fastest train on Earth, V664 Cas generates a bluish arc shaped shock wave. The wave interacts most strongly with the surrounding interstellar medium in the areas where the arc is brightest. After roughly 10,000 years, planetary nebulae become invisible due to a lack of ultraviolet light being emitted by the stars that create them. Displaying beautiful shapes and structures, planetary nebulae are highly desired objects for astrophotographers.

"There were 219 reported releases of biological select agents or toxins from biolabs in the U.S. in 2019, according to the most recent annual report of the Federal Select Agent Program, a joint effort of the CDC, NIH, and U.S. Department of Agriculture to manage the use and transport of some of the most dangerous biological agents and toxins, including ricin, Ebola, and anthrax," Thorp notes.

“Of those releases, 195 led to occupational exposures and 177 led to the administration of health services, including prophylaxis [preventative measures]. The Federal Select Agent Program did not respond to questions about how many of the select agents and toxins it oversees were released in 2020 and how many times the agents that were released came from BSL-2, BSL-3, or BSL-4 labs,” he concludes.

Navajo Nation president Buu Nygren met with NASA’s administrator recently to ask again that human remains not be landed on celestial bodies.

Since December, Nygren has asked that the space agency not fly human remains to the moon. That was in prelude to a failed space launch by a private space company that tried launching a rocket bearing human remains that was destined for the moon.

In a statement, Nygren said he told Bill Nelson that he’s opposed to federal funds being used to support burial activities that impact Native cultures. The moon is considered sacred to the Navajo, and burying human remains on it is considered a desecration. NASA has promised to review its policies but made no further commitment.

The world's first commercial fault-tolerant quantum computer with "logical qubits" may be running before the year's end.

Logical qubits — physical quantum bits, or qubits, connected through quantum entanglement — reduce errors in quantum computers by storing the same data in different places. This diversifies the points of failure when running calculations.

The new machine, which has 256 physical and 10 logical qubits, will launch in late 2024, representatives from QuEra, the startup that is building it, said in a statement.

The announcement follows a new study, published Dec. 6, 2023 in the journal Nature, in which researchers from Harvard, QuEra and several other institutions demonstrated a functioning quantum computer that contained 48 logical qubits — the largest number of logical qubits tested to date.

"It is the first machine with quantum error correction," study co-author Harry Zhou, a physicist at QuEra and Harvard University, told Live Science in an email.

While this computer doesn't have enough power to be useful on its own, it provides a platform on which software programmers can start testing code for future quantum computers, Zhou said.

While conventional computers store information in bits with a value of either 0 or 1, quantum computers use qubits — which are a superposition between 0 and 1, thanks to the laws of quantum mechanics.

Qubits can also be stitched together using quantum entanglement to exist in multiple states simultaneously. This enables them to perform many calculations much faster than classical computers — assuming you can build a quantum computer with enough of them. But qubits can easily be disturbed, making them notoriously error-prone. Roughly 1 in 1,000 fail, versus 1 in 1 billion billion bits in conventional computers.

Quantum computers could outpace the best supercomputers if they incorporate millions of qubits, but the largest quantum computer built so far only has around 1,000 qubits, and qubits' high failure rate limits potential scale-up. Error correction could counteract qubits' tendency to fail, and building logical qubits is one way of doing it.

The new error-correction system relies on data redundancy, where the same piece of data is stored in multiple places, Zhou said. Logical qubits perform the same calculations across several physical qubits — vastly reducing error rates if one or more physical qubits fail, because the data is available elsewhere so calculations can continue.

To make the logical qubit, researchers applied error-correcting computer code to regular qubits. They then set up logical gates, or circuits, between the qubits to entangle them. The quantum computer then calculates the 'syndrome' — a measure of whether it's likely an error has occurred or not. Using this information, the quantum computer corrects the errors and proceeds to the next step.

The new qubits represent a significant advance over past efforts. In 2023, the Google Quantum AI Lab demonstrated a 2.9% error rate using three logical qubits; Quera's error rate is 0.5% with 48 logical qubits. The world leader is the University of Oxford, which has achieved error rates of less than 0.01% — but only between two-qubit gates.

Last year, IBM also demonstrated error-correction technology in its 127-qubit Heron chip which reduced error rates fivefold compared with its other chips. But its first commercial fault-tolerant machine isn't expected until 2029.

QuEra plans to launch several quantum computers in the coming years, starting with a 30-logical-qubit, 3,000 physical qubit machine coming out in 2025. Its monster, a machine with more than 10,000 physical qubits and 100 logical qubits, is scheduled for 2026. "At 100 logical qubits, the [2026] machine can perform correct calculations that exceed the capability of today’s supercomputers," Zhou said.

Major Airport Crowned ‘UFO Hotspot’ After Countless Strange Sightings

A slew of articles published Monday crowned a major British airport a “UFO hotspot” after a series of strange sightings in the last six years.

Some 27 reports of strange UFOs/UAPs have emerged around England’s Stansted Airport in the last six years, according to the Daily Star. Some of these sightings are reportedly classified as “near misses” as mystery objects hurl themselves around the skies above this busy facility. Back in 2022, a Ryanair flight was nearly hit by something that didn’t appear on the drone-monitoring equipment, but managed to get some 4,000 feet into the air, the outlet reported.

“These fascinating revelations illustrate that whatever one thinks about UFOs there’s a credible and serious flight safety issue involved,” former Ministry of Defense (MOD) chief Nick Pope stated, according to the outlet. “When an object passes within 20 [meters] of an aircraft this is a very close call by anyone’s definition. This, and the other incidents revealed in this FOI response, shows that it was a mistake for the MOD to terminate their UFO investigation [program] at the end of 2009 and suggests it’s time to reverse this policy.”

In another example, multiple aircraft reported an object within their vicinity, roughly 500 feet below them as they lined up to land on Stansted’s Runway 22, an Essex police report explained, the Daily Star reported. Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems (TCAS) on the aircraft reportedly detected the object, but none of the pilots could see anything in the skies, the report added.

Whether these things are alien or not shouldn’t bother those employed to investigate these incidents. Stansted reportedly serves some 27 million passengers annually, so anything flying close to planes needs to be addressed.

“Even if people are skeptical and think this is all just drone activity it should be borne in mind that while drones can be flown as a hobby, or by surveyors, they can also be used in espionage and terrorism. Either way — and particularly in crowded flight paths — we need to identify all objects in our airspace,” Pope said, the Daily Star reported.

He reportedly further argued that, here in the U.S., we apparently take issues like this very seriously (though our most recent UFO/UAP bill was a total joke). The same level of care needs to be applied to investigating these incidents in the U.K. in order to “mitigate” their potential threat, Pope added, according to the outlet.

The tourism-heavy area ranked No. 22 for all U.S. counties, according to data from the National UFO Reporting Center.

Ufologist Reinaldo Ríos urges Dominican President to acknowledge UFO reports

Puerto Rican ufologist Reinaldo Ríos, a frequent visitor to the Dominican Republic, has responded to President Luis Abinader’s inquiry about UFOs visiting the nation. During a press conference with “LA Semanal” in February 2024, a journalist asked President Abinader if there were any reports of UFO sightings in the country. The president replied that, at that moment, there were none, but he expressed willingness to investigate further.

EU makes decision about frozen Russian funds

The bloc has approved a measure that would allow it to seize the interest earned by sanctioned assets

The European Union on Monday took a step towards confiscating the interest earned by Russian sovereign funds the bloc has frozen in relation to the Ukraine conflict.

The EU and the US moved to freeze an estimated $300 billion in assets belonging to the Russian Central Bank in February 2022. Most of those funds are held by the Brussels-based clearinghouse Euroclear.

On Monday, the European Council ordered all depositors holding €1 million ($1.08 million) or more Russian Central Bank assets to keep separate accounts of “extraordinary cash balances accumulating due to EU restrictive measures” and prohibited them from disposing of any interest or profits from the frozen assets.

“This decision paves the way for the Council to decide on a possible establishment of afinancial contribution to the EU budget raised on these net profits to support Ukraineand its recovery and reconstruction at a later stage,”the Council said in a statement.

Moscow has protested the US and EU sanctions as illegal, adding that any attempt to outright seize the Russian funds would be declared theft and receivea response in kind. Russian bankers have also warned that such a step would destroy the confidence of the rest of the world in the rule of law in the West andtrigger a run on European and US banksbecause they would no longer be considered safe.

While the US has been the most outspoken advocate of confiscating the frozen funds to send to Ukraine, theEU stands to lose the most from Moscow’s potential retaliation against such a step. Euroclear alone accounts for €196.6 billion ($211 billion) in frozen Russian assets, and it has accrued nearly €4.4 billion in interest over the past year.

The EU’s “invention of openly fraudulent schemes for the seizure of income from Russian assets is dictated by the need to create the illusion of legitimacy over attacks on our property andthereby camouflage what is in fact an outright theft,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said over the weekend, responding to reports that Brussels would move to seize the interest.

Some EU members have likewise been skeptical of the confiscation proposal. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said last week that it sounded uncomfortably like “communist heritage.”
