German FM admits economy ‘unfit’

Christian Lindner believes that structural reforms are needed to strengthen the competitiveness of the EU’s economic heavyweight

Germany needs structural reforms to boost its competitiveness, Finance Minister Christian Lindner said at an event at the London School of Economics on Monday, as cited by Reuters.

The comments came in response toGermany once again being given the label of “the sick man of Europe” after it turned in the weakest performance among large economies in the world last year, according to the IMF. The German economy contracted by 0.3% year-on-year in 2023, as soaring energy costs, lackluster global orders, and elevated interest rates bit into growth.

Linder, however, denied the comparison, remarking that “some say Germany is the sick man of Europe, I don’t think so,” Lindner. “We are an unfit man.” The “sick man” label was famously applied to Germany by The Economist in 1999 as the country grappled with the challenges of reunification and reduced export demand.

The IMF projects the German economy growing by only 0.9% in 2024, well below the 1.4% expected for advanced economies.

Germany is “healthy, but not in the best shape,” Lindner said. Comparing the German and UK economies, he added that “both are in a downturn.” Last month, the minister, sticking with the same metaphor, compared Germany to a “tired man” in need of a cup of coffee of structural reforms.

Linder also discussed how, in his view, the EU needs a single capital market for private investment, instead of endless subsidizing.“It is unlikely that any economy is capable of paying subsidies for a very long time,” he said.

In a separate comment made to Bloomberg, the minister stated that Germany’s economy would be ruined if it followed the UK out of the EU, adding that the single market is of the “utmost importance” to Germany.

Last month, Alice Weidel, the co-leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, called Brexit a “model for Germany.” She has proposed holding a referendum to “let the people decide, just as Britain did.”

“It would ruin our economy,” Linder said commenting on the proposal. “This is why we have to tell people, OK, you maybe are not in line with government policies but this is no reason for changing the complete system and for changing what our wealth is based on.”

The US intelligence community asked foreign intelligence agencies to monitor 26 associates of Donald Trump on the eve of the 2016 elections, The New York Post reports, citing a joint report by independent journalists Michael Shellenberger, Matt Taibbi and Alex Gutentag.

All this ultimately led to accusations that the Trump campaign was colluding with Russia.

In particular, former CIA Director John Brennan made this request to US partners in the so-called Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which includes the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The US intelligence community has “identified” 26 Trump associates “as people who could be targeted, contacted or manipulated,” one source with knowledge of the matter told reporters.

As the article explains, "stumble" refers to a situation in which a reason is created for meeting an object of interest in order to develop a relationship that may lead to intelligence.

“They were targets of our own intelligence and law enforcement agencies - targets for data collection and disinformation,” the source told reporters.

At the same time, the article notes that American law categorically prohibits surveillance of US citizens without court approval.

Katalin Novak resigned as president on Saturday, then the justice minister stood down as an MP.This has become the biggest threat to Prime Minister Viktor Orban's rule since he returned to power in 2010.

Hungary has been shaken by the sudden resignations of the two most popular and successful women in an otherwise strongly male-dominated governing party. President Katalin Novak and former Justice Minister Judit Varga have both taken responsibility for the decision to grant clemency to Endre K, former deputy director of a state orphanage. (I think they Poop asked them to release pedos before he would come.)

Endre K was jailed for persuading children to withdraw their testimony against the director of the orphanage for sexual abuse. He was one of 25 people pardoned by the president during a visit by Pope Francis last year. But his name only became public on 2 February.

The issue has become deeply problematic for a government which has made protection of children and traditional family values the cornerstone of its policies. Worst of all for Mr Orban and his party, the departures of the two women have been followed by an avalanche of allegations about the way he runs the country.

And this double resignation, coming amid increasing protests, has deprived Viktor Orban of two very different but essential allies. President Novak radiated a "mother of the nation" image, closely identified with popular policies to encourage couples to have more children. She also promoted a more inclusive, less aggressive style than the prime minister in her largely symbolic role as head of state.

The tough-talking Judit Varga had been due to lead the governing Fidesz party into battle against the "Brussels bureaucrats" in the European elections in June. Now she has resigned as an MP and withdrawn from public life. Until her resignation, Judit Varga was a high-profile Fidesz figure destined to play a key role in the European elections in June

Two other key figures have come under attack too - Mr Orban's communications chief Antal Rogan, who is also in charge of the secret services, and Zoltan Balog, a Protestant bishop and personal adviser to the prime minister. Mr Balog isallegedto have lobbied behind the scenes for the presidential clemency in the Endre K case. He has denied the allegation.

Within minutes of Judit Varga's resignation, her ex-husband, powerful Fidesz insider Peter Magyar, announced: "I do not want to be part of a system for a minute longer where the real culprits hide behind women's skirts." "For a long time, I believed in an ideal, in a national, sovereign, civic Hungary," he complained. "However, over the past few years and especially today, I have come to realise all this is indeed just a political product, a sugary coating that serves only two purposes: to conceal the operation of the power factory and to acquire enormous wealth."

We are all individuals who devoted significant portions of our lives to national security. Some of us served in senior positions in policy departments and agencies, and some of us served in senior positions in the Intelligence Community. Some of us were political appointees, and some were career officials. Many of us worked for presidents of both political parties.

We are all also individuals who see Russia as one of our nation’s primary adversaries. All of us have an understanding of the wide range of Russian overt and covert activities that undermine US national security, with some of us knowing Russian behavior intimately, as we worked to defend our nation against it for a career. A few of us worked against Russian information operations in the United States in the last several years.

Perhaps most important, each of us believes deeply that American citizens should determine the outcome of elections, not foreign governments. All of us agree with the founding fathers’ concern about the damage that foreign interference in our politics can do to our democracy.

It is for all these reasons that we write to say that the arrival on the US political scene of emails purportedly belonging to Vice President Biden’s son Hunter, much of it related to his time serving on the Board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.

We want to emphasize that we do not know if the emails, provided to the New York Post by President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, are genuine or not and that we do not have evidence of Russian involvement — just that our experience makes us deeply suspicious that the Russian government played a significant role in this case.

If we are right, this is Russia trying to influence how Americans vote in this election, and we believe strongly that Americans need to be aware of this.

There are a number of factors that make us suspicious of Russian involvement.

In a shocking development, an acclaimed Penn State professor, Themis Matsoukas, who was previously charged with animal cruelty after being caught engaging in bestiality with his pet dog, is now facing additional charges following the revelation of further disturbing acts captured on videos, New York Post reported.

The case has now escalated with the emergence of new footage that allegedly shows Matsoukas inserting a tree branch and a lollipop into his anus in a public park.

According to reports from Fox 43, authorities discovered 55 videos on Matsoukas’ electronic devices that depicted acts of indecency. These devices were seized under a search warrant tied to the initial charges.

The affidavit obtained by Onward State details various lewd behaviors exhibited by Matsoukas, including public masturbation on a picnic table and in a lake at the park, as well as climbing a tree while naked and engaging in obscene acts with objects like a Tootsie Pop and a control handle of a DCNR John Deere crawler.

The news outlet added that Matsoukas also deposited fecal matter on leased campgrounds and in a service area adjacent to DCNR machinery, as well as applied bodily fluids to a glass table at a leased campsite.

As a result of these disturbing revelations, Matsoukas has been charged with multiple counts of burglary, criminal trespass, indecent exposure, open lewdness, and disorderly conduct for obscene gestures.

New York Post reported:

Huntingdon County District Judge Douglas Gummo released him Monday on $50,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 21.

Defense lawyer Matt ​McClenahen told the Centre Daily Times in a message that it would be “inappropriate for me to comment at this time outside of court.”

Huntingdon County District Attorney Dave Smith suggested Monday that no additional charges are expected to be filed since no other videos have been found.

“To my knowledge, we’re satisfied that the investigation is complete with regard to the filing of additional charges,” Smith said, according to the outlet.

British and other European intelligence agencies intercepted communications between associates of Donald Trump and Russian officials and other Russian individuals during the campaign and passed on those communications to their US counterparts, US congressional and law enforcement and US and European intelligence sources tell CNN.

The communications were captured during routine surveillance of Russian officials and other Russians known to western intelligence. British and European intelligence agencies, including GCHQ, the British intelligence agency responsible for communications surveillance, were not proactively targeting members of the Trump team but rather picked up these communications during what’s known as “incidental collection,” these sources tell CNN.

The European intelligence agencies detected multiple communications over several months between the Trump associates and Russian individuals – and passed on that intelligence to the US. The US and Britain are part of the so-called “Five Eyes” agreement (along with Canada, Australia and New Zealand), which calls for open sharing among member nations of a broad range of intelligence.

The communications are likely to be scrutinized as part of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russia’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election.

“If foreign intelligence agencies share information with US intelligence, and it’s relevant to the investigation, then of course the intelligence committee will look at it,” a source close to the Senate investigation told CNN.

The Guardian reported earlier Thursday that British alerted US Intel of such contacts.

GCHQ’s surveillance became politically sensitive when Trump – citing an uncorroborated Fox News report – claimed that Britain had tapped his phones in Trump Tower at former President Barack Obama’s behest.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer repeated Trump’s claim and cited Fox News’ reporting about GCHQ’s surveillance to reporters in the briefing room. “Judge Andrew Napolitano made the following statement, quote, ‘Three intelligence sources have informed Fox News that President Obama went outside the chain of command (to spy on Trump). He didn’t use the NSA, he didn’t use the CIA … he used GCHQ,’” Spicer told journalists.

Those comments angered British officials. After Spicer’s remarks, White House officials told CNN British ambassador to the US Kim Darroch and Sir Mark Lyall Grant, national security adviser to Prime Minister Theresa May, “expressed their concerns to Spicer and Trump national security adviser H.R. McMaster” in two separate conversations.

MOSCOW, February 14. /TASS/. The Vatican facilitates the exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine, Russian Ambassador to the Vatican Ivan Soltanovsky told TASS in an interview.

The diplomat called the Russian embassy’s work in the Vatican's facilitation of the prisoner exchange process between Russia and Ukraine "an important area of cooperation in the humanitarian sphere."

"The Vatican provides us with information about Ukrainian prisoners of war, which we send to the relevant Russian authorities and which is then used to prepare the exchange. We know about concrete positive results of our work," the ambassador said.

On February 8, one hundred Russian servicemen were returned from captivity in Kiev-controlled territory, and the same number of captured Ukrainian servicemen were handed over in return. The Russian Defense Ministry reported the previous exchange on January 31. At that time, 195 Russian servicemen were returned from Kiev-controlled territory as a result of negotiations, and 195 Ukrainian servicemen were handed over to the Ukrainian side in exchange.

Prosecutors Reportedly Met with Biden Admin Before 3 Trump Indictments

Three separate prosecutors reportedly met with White House aides before indicting former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden’s political opponent.

The reported meetings suggest a coordinated attack against Biden’s 2024 rival. If coordination occurred, it lends credence to Trump’s belief that the indictments are election interference.

The timing of the indictments are peculiar. After Trump announced a reelection bid against Biden, four indictments hit Trump in four separate jurisdictions, each following revelations about the Biden family business.

First Case: “Story Daniels”

The first indictment occurred on April 4, 2023, the same day that former Biden aide Kathy Chung testified about Joe Biden’s mishandling of classified documents, contradicting Biden’s version of events.

On March 17, 2023, Bragg asked for a meeting with federal law enforcement ahead of the Trump indictment Trump, a court source told Fox News. A year earlier, Bragg’s office hired a former senior Department of Justice (DOJ) official Matthew Colangelo, who spent years targeting Trump at the Justice Department. He also attacked Trump in his role in the New York Attorney General’s office.

“Bragg has been very discredited by the indictment because the people that read it, even Democrats—they’re saying this is not an indictment,” Trump exclusively told Breitbart News after the indictment:

Some are saying this is unconstitutional because there’s no crime. He’s been absolutely discredited. It’s a shame. They’re willing to destroy our country. This is all run by the White House, by the way, just in case you have any questions. Second Case: “Documents”

Smith filed the second indictment on June 8, 2023, the same day an FBI 10-23 form surfaced alleging Joe Biden was bribed $5 million. Later in June, Smith filed a superseding indictment in the case the day after Hunter Biden’s sweetheart plea deal in Delaware fell apart.

Months prior, in March, a member of Biden’s counsel’s office met with a top member of Smith’s team, just nine weeks before he indicted Trump in the classified document case, Breitbart News reported.

The meeting “raises obvious concerns about visits to the White House after [Bratt] began his work with the special counsel,” George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley told the Post. “There is no reason why the Justice Department should not be able to confirm whether this meeting was related to the ongoing investigation or concerns some other matter.”

Trump slammed the indictment as election interference. Biden does not want to “run” against him, Trump exclusively told Breitbart News in July. “They didn’t want to run against me. That’s why they did it,” he said. “They did this so I wouldn’t get the nomination… They don’t want to run against me, that’s why they did it.”

A man, described as a former employee, has shot dead three people at a shipping company's office near Athens.

Greek media report that the gunman killed two men and a woman before turning the gun on himself.

The suspect was found dead next to a hunting rifle that was believed to have been used in the shooting.

Police say the gunman was a former employee who had recently been fired. The owner of the company, European Product Carriers, was among the dead.

The incident, which initially prompted a hostage situation, happened in Glyfada, about 12km (7 miles) south of Athens.

The armed man broke into the building, shot at employees, and then killed two men and a woman before barricading himself inside.

A witness, identified as a company worker, told journalists outside the building: "I heard the gunshots, I heard the first two. I headed towards the stairs to see what was happening. I saw two guys coming down, they said, 'It's Aris with a gun, he's shooting.'

"Of course, I dashed outside, towards the garden, and made my way out through the back door of the garage."

Police cordoned off a large area around the building and the elite counter-terrorism unit EKAM, as well as fire engines and ambulances were stationed outside.

As the standoff continued, the gunman remained barricaded on the second floor of the building.

A police negotiator tried to defuse the situation for several hours but the man eventually turned the gun on himself.

The shooter has been identified as a 70-year-old Egyptian national.

Shootings - outside of gang-related activity - are rare in Greece, which has strict laws over gun possession.

Many Greek and foreign shipping companies have offices in Glyfada, a seaside resort to the south of Athens.

European Product Carriers owns an average fleet of 35 vessels including oil tankers.

State Department records made public Tuesday show that the U.S. Embassy in Kiev monitored the Twitter accounts of 13 people, including Fox News hosts Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, in the spring of 2019 for posts about Ukraine and related topics in what “smacks of an enemies list,” Fox News contributor John Solomon told “Hannity.”

The documents, which were obtained by the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, showed thatState Department officials monitored the accounts for use of specific terms, including “[Ambassador Marie] Yovanovitch,” “Ukraine Ambassador,” “Ukrainian Ambassador,” “Ukraine Soros,” “Clinton campaign,” and “Biden-Burisma.”

"When you look at this ... this was an enemies list," Solomon said. "This was a group of journalists that had raised questions about Russia and then about the conduct of things like Joe Biden, and the embassy was monitoring us, not for national security reasons, but for reasons about the reputations of people in the past administration, the Obama-Biden-[Hillary] Clinton administration."

Solomon added that he believes "there was more than social media monitoring going on. I believe there may be other communications that were monitored based on things I see in the documents tonight."

Solomon called on the State Department to "please come forward and let the American people know" if the monitoring extended beyond social media.

"The State Department and the embassy was told that these actions violated the Privacy Act [of 1974] of the 13 Americans whose accounts were monitored and the real question now is, is this the only thing they did?" he said.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, the GOP Senate campaign arm, on Tuesday endorsed Kari Lake in the Arizona Republican U.S. Senate primary.

Lake began work even before she announced her bid last fall to show that she is ready to move beyond her 2022 Arizona gubernatorial loss and that she's ready to work with theNRSC and its chair, Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., to secure the swing state for the GOP, Politico reported. (Daines knows he’s been targeted by Bannon and the war room posse to get primaried for his vote for McConnell’s BS, so he’s towing the line for now)

Lake said she is honored to have the prominent endorsement ahead of the state's primary next month. "We are uniting Republicans in Arizona and have a clear path to victory," she said. "The Senate Majority runs through Arizona."

The NRSC is expected to host a fundraiser in D.C. in March with Lake. Both Daines and Senate GOP Conference Chair John Barrasso, R-Wyo., the latter of whom previously endorsed Lake, are both listed on the invitation.

A poll last month showed the Senate race is tense, as Lake has a narrow lead over her likely opponent, Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego. The dynamics of the race may change if incumbent independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who previously won her seat as a Democrat before leaving the party, enters the race.Sinema has yet to make a formal announcement about whether she is running for reelection. (Probably doing that to split the support for Lake)
