The world’s largest community-organized 5,000-metre run has quietly erased records from its website, citing the need to promote gender inclusivity.

Parkrun’s decision has sparked a wave of backlash from runners online, who are accusing the organization of discriminating against women and erasing records to hide the fact that biological males are claiming top spots on womens’ rankings.

“Parkrun decision (is) not going down well. CEO Jefferys says it is a health charity, not a race – so are health charities allowed to discriminate against females? I doubt it. Gender self-ID continues so how many males will be running in the (female category) tmrw?” said marathon runner and two-time Olympian Mara Yamauchi on X.

Parkrun was founded in the U.K. but holds events across the world, including in Canada. There are Parkrun events in Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and other cities across the country.

An Alberta law firm is putting the Alberta government on notice with a proposed class action lawsuit representing business owners affected by COVID-19 public health orders.

The proposed suit, filed by Rath & Company, follows the recent Ingram decision, where the Calgary Court of King’s Bench declared several of Alberta’s public health orders to have been unlawfully enacted, setting a precedent for potential financial redress for impacted businesses.

Lead counsel Jeffrey Rath said this proposal marks the first of many procedural and substantive steps.

“This is an important case about government actions and overreach during a time when business owners were unlawfully mandated to close their businesses at a moment’s notice,” he said. “It will give Albertans the opportunity to hold the Alberta government accountable and seek fair compensation on behalf of the many businesses impacted by Deena Hinshaw’s many unlawful decisions.”

Hinshaw was Alberta’s chief medical officer through the pandemic until she was removed by Premier Danielle Smith in 2022.

The proposed class action lawsuit targets the financial losses for businesses in Alberta that were either fully or partially restricted due to the public health orders during the pandemic. Rebecca Ingram and Chris Scott are lead plaintiffs as business owners who suffered considerable financial losses as a result of these restrictions.

Owner of the Whistle Stop Cafe, Scott was previously accused of disobeying public health restrictions for refusing to close his restaurant at the height of the pandemic. He was acquitted following the Ingram decision, as the Crown no longer deemed Scott’s prosecution as sustainable given the precedent.

The proposed class action is still looking for representative plaintiffs to join. Business owners who were operational in Alberta from 2020 to 2022 and were impacted by the health directives are able to apply to join the class action. Continue...

Alberta’s regulatory body for physicians and surgeons has withdrawn a proposal to have doctors refer patients for abortions or assisted suicide following backlash from a prolife political party.

Last month, Prolife Alberta, a registered provincial political party, asked supporters to submit feedback to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta’s (CPSA) proposal to implement what’s called effective referral.

The proposal would have ended the current system of allowing patients to seek an abortion or assisted suicide without an objecting physian’s involvement, said Prolife Alberta executive director Richard Dur.

“It forces (doctors) basically to participate in the evil of abortion or euthanasia,” Dur told True North. “And for many physicians, that’s contrary, of course, to the Hippocratic Oath that they swore and contrary to their beliefs.” Continue...

A ban on smoking in private spaces and a phase-out of tobacco sales are among the measures Health Canada planned to offer up at the World Health Organization’s annual tobacco control conference this week.

A Health Canada tobacco control official said these are within the scope of the global treaty governing tobacco restrictions and should be presented to countries as they decide what policies to entertain.

Laura Smith, the director of tobacco and vaping policy in Health Canada’s Tobacco Control Directorate, delivered a presentation on “forward-looking tobacco control measures” at a November webinar hosted by Europe’s Joint Action on Tobacco Control initiative.

As auto thefts have become more prevalent in Canada’s biggest cities, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s justice minister has had their government vehicle stolen three times in the past three years.

According to a report from the CBC, documents tabled in the House of Commons show that Trudeau’s justice ministers David Lametti and Arif Virani have had their government-issued vehicles stolen multiple times.

Most recently, Minister Virani had his Toyota Highlander XLE stolen this past November, requiring authorities to recover the SUV.

That same vehicle was stolen by thieves and recovered by authorities just ten months prior in February 2023 when Lametti was serving as minister of justice.

By this point, Lametti was no stranger to having his government-issued vehicle stolen, as in February 2021, a different Toyota Highlander was stolen from the minister.

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre mocked Minister Virani on X for having his vehicle stolen.

A new documentary about BC provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry premiered in Victoria on Thursday evening as part of the Victoria Film Festival.

The film’s title?

“Our Time to be Kind.”

I gagged upon hearing the news.

British Columbians will know that Henry’s signature phrase from 2020-2022 was “Be Kind, Be Calm, Be Safe.” That’s also what she titled her book. In the film, she is seen with a tote bag with the same phrase printed on it.

How can Henry purport that her brand is about “kindness,” when it was under her pandemic public health orders that the unvaccinated were banned from working out at the gym, attending university, visiting a museum, and dining at a restaurant with friends and family?

Actually, in B.C., healthcare workers without the COVID vaccine are still barred from returning to work, despite the understaffed and strained healthcare system.

And I haven’t forgotten about the 12-year old boy with severe autism who was denied entry to an Indigo bookstore in Burnaby because he wasn’t able to put on a mask. A Paralympic swimmer born without hands, thus unable to affix a mask, was also turned away from the bookstore chain’s Vancouver location. How kind!

According to Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth, those who questioned masks were “irresponsible idiots” with “narcissistic, self-indulgent ways.”

I remember attending my first anti-lockdown protest in the spring of 2020 with a massive parade of others who were concerned about the effects of school closures on children, as well as how peoples’ mental health will be affected if they lose their jobs and are denied human connection.

Onlookers spat that we were “f***ing stupid.” It was all so… kind.

Anyhow, I bought a ticket to see the new documentary film, “Our Time to Be Kind,” because I like to see these things for myself.

And seeing as Henry herself would be at the premiere, which included a Q&A, I wanted to ask her what exactly was “kind” about her discriminatory rules. Continue...

Ontario has pledged to freeze taxes on alcohol for the next two years to help support the province’s alcohol and hospitality industries, according to a press release from the Government of Ontario’s website.

The beer basic tax and mark-ups on alcohol at the LCBO are rates scheduled to adjust annually based on a rolling three-year average set by Statistics Canada’s Consumer Price Index for Ontario.

The Ford government had previously frozen the beer basic tax and LCBO mark-up rates in 2018 until March 1, 2024.

However, the government announced Friday the freeze will remain in place until March 1, 2026 on Friday.

“Our government is constantly looking for ways to make life more affordable for Ontario families by putting more money back into their pockets,” said Premier Doug Ford.

“From stopping increases to the beer tax to cutting the gas tax, we are keeping costs down for businesses and families across the province.”

The five-and-a-half-hour attack targeted agricultural facilities and coastal infrastructure, officials for Ukraine’s southern defense forces wrote on Telegram. They said that a strike in the Mykolaiv region had injured one person, sparking a fire and damaging nearby residential buildings.

Another person was injured in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region when a blaze broke out due to falling debris from a destroyed drone, said the head of the region´s military administration, Serhiy Lysak.

Now, reports have surfaced that suggest Russian forces in the conquered areas are using Starlink terminals produced by Elon Musk’s SpaceX for satellite internet.

Ukrainian military intelligence agency further alleges that it is beginning to look like a ‘systemic’ application.

Starlink terminals were sent in to help Ukraine after the war started and have been vital to Kiev’s battlefield communications.

Starlink, for its part, says it does not do business of any kind with Russia’s government or military.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller is warning that Canada’s economy has become too dependent on cheap labour from international students and temporary foreign workers, however many businesses don’t agree.

“We have gotten addicted to temporary foreign workers,” Miller told BNN Bloomberg in an interview on Tuesday.

“Any large industry trying to make ends meet will look at the ability to drive down wages. There is an incentive to drive labor costs down. It’s something that’ll require a larger discussion.”

Miller recently announced a two-year cap on international students, reducing the annual amount by 35%. There are also plans to reduce the amount of weekly work hours students are permitted to have.

Miller said the federal government will continue to take the necessary measures to curtail Canada’s dependence on temporary foreign labour. One of Canada’s largest public sector unions has been hit with 14 human rights complaints from Jewish members who allege a “culture of discrimination and harassment” amid their union pushing an “anti-Israel agenda.”

The complaints, which accuse the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) of “advocating unbalanced and biased views towards Israel and creating a culture of fear, discrimination and bias towards Jewish (union) members,” list several problematic events.

Incidents include hosting a “solidarity with Palestine” webinar in which participants allegedly accused Israel of colonialism, apartheid and genocide. “The webinar featured presenters who actively presented one-sided and biased views,” the complaints claim.

The union is also accused of having handed out “antisemitic” flyers promoting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanction movement, rejecting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, and targeting Zionism.

Furthermore, the complainants take issue with the union promoting the Ceasefire Now Coalition, which they say falsely accused Israel of bombing the Al-Shifa hospital, as well as with the promotion of anti-Israel rallies and a donation of $25,000 to the controversial UNRWA agency.

Last month, Canada joined the United States in suspending funding to UNRWA following allegations of staff involvement in Hamas’ Oct. 7 terrorist attacks on Israel.

Many of the complainants say they tried bringing up their concerns to the union’s leadership, but investigative or remedial actions were not taken.

Increasingly in the panorama of pro-Ukrainian analysts, you see disenchanted people predicting that the siege of Avdiivka is rapidly becoming ‘Bakhmut 2.0’.

On a fast and shallow reading of this reference we understand that they fear the city will fall with a lot of losses for Kiev – and that’s exactly the case.

But there’s more to this: in Bakhmut – and also in Mariupol – there was the same dynamic at play where, at a certain point during the siege, the military leadership of Ukraine knew it was futile to persist, and wanted to retreat saving the elite forces there to fight another day, in better fortified positions.

In both these cities’ cases – and now Avdiivka – the civilian leadership around President Volodymyr Zelensky insisted its forces put up a valiant fight ‘to the end,’ which they did.

While it can be validly argued that by retreating non-stop, they’d soon end up without any territory, on the other hand, the useless sacrifice of some of the most battle-worthy Ukrainian troops was sorely missed when it was time for them to launch the summer offensive.

Now, in Avdiivka, Zelensky has fired too-independent General Valery Zaluzhny, and new appointee Oleksandr Syrsky will certainly heed the President’s call for a desperate defense.

It turns out that Ukraine is indeed reinforcing Avdiivka, reportedly with one of the best brigades in the Ukrainian army, the 3rd Assault Brigade.

There are currently 21 vacancies in the Ontario Superior Court alone, including six in Toronto.

This has resulted in court delays and backlogs, as well as several files in the Ontario Superior Court collapsing in the last few months, including a human trafficking case, a gun possession case and a sex assault case.

The cases collapsed after the trials went beyond a time limit imposed by the Supreme Court’s landmark R v Jordan ruling, which says cases must be heard within 18 months in provincial courts or 30 months in superior courts to not violate one’s right to a fair trial.

Chief Justice Richard Wagner sounded the alarm last June on the high number of judicial vacancies, saying “these empty positions have a significant impact on the administration of justice, the functioning of our courts, and access to justice for the public.”

A disabled senior convicted of coughing on a grocery store clerk and complaining about the store’s COVID protocols has been acquitted after an appeal. and “complaining with considerable persistence and vigour” about the store’s COVID protocols in 2020, has been acquitted of all criminal charges.

The British Columbia Supreme Court has overturned a judge’s 2022 ruling that Kimberly Woolman, 60, “assaulted one employee by intentionally coughing in their direction and assaulted another by intentionally pushing her shopping cart into him.”

She was initially charged with causing a disturbance in a public place by shouting and two counts of assault.

Woolman was shopping at Save-on-Foods in Campbell River, B.C., for her mother, who lived in a nursing home, one month after B.C. declared a state of emergency.

She had finished shopping and was at the cashier, ready to pay. She questioned why a barrier was blocking some of the aisles, and the clerk explained it was for social distancing to “keep down congestion.”

“I said, ‘You got to be freaking kidding me,’ and I walked away. She followed me, stopped me halfway down the aisle and demanded that I answer her question of whether I would keep social distancing, as she was in my face, two feet away, and I was telling her to back off,” Woolman said in an interview on Rumble.

According to Woolman, the clerk persisted in following her, saying that she would not be able to get groceries if she didn’t commit to following the public health guidelines.

Eventually, three other clerks were involved. She was accused of intentionally coughing at the first clerk, Jacqueline Poulton, and another clerk accused her of ramming a cart into him.

Woolman’s case was granted an appeal after Justice Douglas Thompson ruled the trial judge was incorrect for refusing to allow Woolman to call on a character witness.

Thompson did not order a new trial, opting instead to overturn the conviction and enter an acquittal.

According to Thompson’s decision, Woolman asserted a myriad of grounds for appeal, but many of these were “manifestly without merit.” He concluded, however, that the character evidence matter provided enough grounds for an appeal.

Woolman also claimed that her lawyer sought a deal with the Crown rather than defending her innocence using available video evidence.

Edmonton saw “electric, migration-spurred, population growth” in 2023, according to a new study released by the Conference Board of Canada.

Record federal immigration programs and the city’s booming economy are among the reasons behind the discrepancy.

“High federal immigration targets are delivering international newcomers, while the city’s healthy economy and affordable housing is (sic) attracting other Canadians,” highlighted the report.

In October, the Edmonton City Council approved a new zoning bylaw. The previous zoning limited many residential zones to single-family homes. Three-story apartments, townhouses, row houses, and duplexes with up to eight units will now be allowed in any residential area.

Still, housing starts in Edmonton fell approximately 10% between 2022 and 2023.

Alberta’s peak of housing starts was in 1978, at around 17,000. This peak was mirrored in 2015. In 2023, that value had fallen by almost 23%.

The Conference Board of Canada expects a modest uptick of housing starts in 2025, with about a 10% increase by 2028.

Police in Ontario, Canada, are investigating a shooting at the house of a Sikh separatist activist who is linked to US-based pro-Khalistan movement leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Khalistan is a movement seeking to carve a separate state for Sikhs out of lands in India, and has been at the center of a diplomatic row between New Delhi, Ottawa and Washington in recent times.

According to an AFP report, on Monday police said they’d been alerted by construction workers about an apparent “bullet hole” in a window of the house of Inderjit Singh Gosal, who is believed to be “a close associate” of Pannun, who New Delhi has designated a “terrorist” and whose organization “Sikhs for Justice” is banned in the South Asian country.

“We understand who this person is and his affiliations, but it’s just too early for us to speculate that there’s any connection to other violence and threats,” AFP quoted a police official saying about the Gosal bullet-hole investigation. The outlet noted that no injuries were reported in the incident as the targeted building is under construction and currently vacant.

The attack comes days after shots were fired at Simranjeet Singh, another associate of Pannun. Two Canadian teens were later arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm. MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Canada has refused to extradite Yaroslav Hunka, the Ukrainian Nazi collaborator who received a standing ovation in the Canadian parliament in September, to Russia, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"Our request for extradition was formally rejected citing the absence of an extradition treaty between our countries," the source said.

In September, 2023, the 98-year-old Nazi collaborator was invited to attend Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's address at the Canadian parliament. Hunka was introduced as a hero who fought against the Russians during World War II and received a standing ovation from the entire Canadian legislature.

The honoring of a Nazi collaborator sparked outcries from Russia, Poland and elsewhere.

In October, Hunka was charged in absentia with the genocide of civilians during World War II by the Russian Investigative Committee. He is accused of participating in large-scale executions of at least 500 civilians in the Lvov region of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1943-1944.

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office told Sputnik in December that it had requested that Hunka be extradited to Russia to face criminal charges of genocide against Soviet citizens.

In a recent trio of posts to X, Elon Musk wrote that (1) illegal immigrants “are not prevented from voting in federal elections,” (2) “you don’t need government issued ID to vote,” and (3) Democrats “are importing voters.”

To rebut those statements, The New York Times (NYT) published an article by Jim Rutenberg and Kate Conger claiming that Mr. Musk is “spreading election misinformation” about “illegal voting by noncitizens” and echoing a “conspiracy theory” spread by former President Donald Trump.

Although Mr. Musk’s words are imprecise, the gist of what he wrote is correct, and The NYT is categorically wrong.

Illegal Voter Registration

In response to Mr. Musk’s first two points, The NYT argues that “federal law requires identification verification from voters when they register.” The hyperlink in that sentence leads to a document by the liberal Brennan Center for Justice claiming that “new identification requirements” in a 2002 federal voting law “may severely threaten voters’ rights.”

What The NYT fails to reveal is that the Brennan Center document describes the identification requirements in the law, which don’t require government-issued ID or proof of citizenship—just as Mr. Musk wrote. The document notes that even a “utility bill” or “bank statement” is enough to comply with the law. The text of the 2002 legislation and the current U.S. election code law confirm this.

Furthermore, a 2013 Supreme Court ruling supports Mr. Musk and contradicts The NYT by explaining that the National Voter Registration Form “does not require documentary evidence of citizenship; rather, it requires only that an applicant aver, under penalty of perjury, that he is a citizen.” Continue...

I imagine life can often feel pretty difficult for today’s high school students.

On top of dealing with classic teenage drama like homework, hormones, pimples, parents, driving, dating, university selection, and more, students these days have to contend with a host of new challenges.

They suffered long periods of brutal Covid lockdowns. Active shooter drills are a normal part of student life. And, of course, there’s the nonstop anxiety and peer pressure of social media.

Plus, on top of everything else, students today have also been force-fed some pretty bizarre ideas.

Classical literature, advanced mathematics, and hard sciences have taken a back seat to social justice, climate justice, economic justice, etc. (as defined by the woke, fanatical left).

But there are early signs that this indoctrination is starting to break new ground.

Yesterday a close friend of mine who lives in Spain told me that his son, a high school senior, has been getting lessons in school about Central Bank Digital Currencies, or CBDCs.

If you’re not familiar with the concept, a CBDC is essentially a cryptocurrency that is controlled by the government and central bank. And so far, at least half a dozen CBDCs have been rolled out around the world, including in Russia, China, and India.

Now, governments already have the means to track you and monitor your finances.

They can force financial institutions and credit card issuers to turn over your entire financial history. They can order banks and brokerage firms to freeze your assets.

And if you remember what happened in Canada during the ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests, Justin Trudeau Castro used his ‘emergency powers’ cut the protestors off from the financial system.

They had no access to their bank accounts, ATMs, or even crowdfunding platforms.

Governments already have the power to do all of these things.

But CBDCs take this power to a much higher level… because there’s no more middleman. Government authorities wouldn’t have to bother going to banks, brokerages, and credit card companies; they could simply deactivate your funds with a mouse click.

Ae well-known Ottawa think tank warned in a recent report on crime that Canada’s justice system is unable to keep up with out-of-control crime that has risen sharply in the last few decades to the point where the national murder rate at its highest in 30 years.

According to the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s “Report on the Criminal Justice System” released last month, Canada’s violent crime severity is at its highest level since 2007.

“Canada’s criminal justice system is clearly performing worse than it was six years ago,” the report concluded. “There remains a need for ongoing independent monitoring and performance measurement of the criminal justice system in Canada.”

In 2021, the violent crime rate increased by 6%. In 2022, the rate went up another 5%.

“The current homicide rate is the highest it has been in 30 years, and the police-reported rate for sexual assault is at its highest level since 1995,” researchers described.

Elections Canada also purports to monitor media and the internet to identify potential election disruptions, misinformation, and impersonations that may hinder voter participation or cause confusion.

The Democracy Fund noted that Elections Canada has previously contacted social media companies to establish protocols for reporting cases of false information on the voting process and those seeking to impersonate the department.

The civil society organization noted several problems with Election Canada’s approach to monitoring online information.

One of the critiques is that it is not clear that Elections Canada has the legislative authority to report citizens or their online comments or attempt to influence platforms to remove “false information,” said The Democracy Fund in its letter.

The original scheme was to allow $10,000 to eligible homeowners to convert from their oil-fired furnaces to an electric heat pump. Trudeau’s cabinet last October expanded the grants to $15,000 along with a $250 “one-time bonus payment.”  

Cabinet wrote in the Inquiry Of Ministry that the purchase and “installation of a new electric cold climate heat pump, save thousands of dollars annually on heating bills and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

In total, some 286,000 Atlantic Canadians currently use furnaces fired by heating oil, and since the original program was introduced in February of last year, of 1,241 homeowners who asked for a subsidy, some 361 were denied, a rejection rate of 29 percent.

The Inquiry confirmed that only 80 oil-fired furnaces have been replaced by heat pumps nationwide.

An “undetermined number” of people were killed and injured in Thursday’s operation, Medecins Sans Frontieres has said

Israeli troops on Thursday stormed Al Nasser hospital in southern Gaza, the largest still-functioning health facility in the besieged enclave, according to both the Israeli military and officials from the Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement issued through its spokesperson Daniel Hagari that it had received “credible intelligence” to support claims that Hamas “held hostages at the Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis.”

The IDF also indicated that it believed Hamas militants to be hiding inside the facility, though it did not immediately release evidence to back up the claim. A spokesperson for Hamas dismissed the IDF statement as “lies.”

Last June, the leaked contents of a stonewalled FBI document, form FD-1023, alleging that President Joe Biden was paid $5 million by an executive of Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings, where his son Hunter sat on the board, and also received an alleged $5 million.

The form, dated June 30, 2020, was from a "highly credible" confidential human source (CHS) who had detailed multiple meetings and conversations they had with a top Burisma executive over the course of several years, beginning in 2015. The CHS had been working with the FBI as a regular, reliable source of information since 2010, and has been paid approximately $200,000 by the bureau.

Now, as the 2024 election heats up, that source - Alexander Smirnov, 43, has been arrested and charged with lying about the bribes by special counsel David Weiss, who is investigating Hunter Biden.

According to the NY Times, "The story Mr. Smirnov told investigators was part of a series of explosive and unsubstantiated claims by Republicans that the Bidens engaged in potentially criminal activity — allegations central to the party’s efforts to impeach the president."

Smirnov faces a two-count indictment for making false statements and obstructing the government's long-running investigation into Hunter Biden. He faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.

Alberta government calls on Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault “to end his relentless pursuit of a more expensive Canada.”

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz issued a joint statement rejecting the rebranded federal carbon tax.

“The federal government, in its flawed environmental activism, imposed a punitive carbon tax that did not reduce emissions, but instead, raised the cost of everything,” said the province.

Previously known as the Climate Action Incentive Program, the Liberals have renamed the carbon tax the Canada Carbon Rebate. The announcement of the rebate program’s new name initially came from a Finance Canada press release, which highlighted the reimbursement amounts for Canadians this year.

Several ministers subsequently confirmed the announcement in Ottawa on Wednesday.

The rebranding of the carbon tax changes only the name, not how the federal fuel charge system or corresponding refund works.

“The name was updated to the Canada Carbon Rebate to clarify its function, and make its meaning and relationship to the carbon pricing system more intuitive for Canadians,” reads the federal government’s press release.

A months-long investigation has led to the arrest of four people in what is now the largest contraband tobacco bust in British Columbia’s history.

The estimated retail value of the cigarettes seized is about $11 million.

The investigation began on suspicion of an alleged drug and contraband network in August 2023 and spanned across multiple jurisdictions.

The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, responsible for tackling gang-related crimes in the province, searched seven properties between Jan. 24 and 25 in Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey and Victoria, according to a press release from the unit on Tuesday.

The investigation led to the seizure of “32 firearms, a large quantity of ammunition, body armor, 10 pallets of contraband liquor, 35 pallets of contraband tobacco, 8 vehicles, 1 speedboat, half a kilogram of cocaine, and other items consistent with suspected drug trafficking,” reads the release.

The average rent in Canada increased 9% in 2023 to a record high of $2,178 in December 2023.

Across the country, average rents for apartments increased 12.8%, condominiums 6.9%, and houses/townhouses 5.9%, totalling an 8.6% increase across all home types, according to data released Wednesday by Rentals.ca and market research firm Urbanation.

The 8.6% increase in rents in 2023 followed a 12.1% increase in 2022 and a 4.6% increase in 2021. The five-year average annual growth in rent is 4.9%, including a 5.4% decrease in 2020 due to Covid.

Over the past two years, asking rents in Canada have increased by 22%, an average of $390 per month.

Among Canada’s largest municipalities, Calgary posted one of the fastest increases in annual rent growth, rising 14% from last year to an average of $2,071. This increase follows Quebec City at 18.9%. Calgary’s rent also increased by 22.6% in 2022.

Edmonton had average rent prices much lower than Calgary, at $1,467, but rose by 13.5%.

In Canada’s two most expensive cities to rent, Vancouver and Toronto, rental price changes were reasonable. Average asking rents for apartments in Vancouver decreased by 0.7% and increased in Toronto by 2.1% since last year. Continue...

Researchers at McMaster University discovered that schools and daycares were not found to be significant places of high transmission rates for COVID-19, a finding standing in stark contrast with decisions by governments to close schools.

“Although the data consistently show that children can both contract and transmit COVID-19, based on published reports to date, following reopening, the risk of widespread transmission from child to child and child to adult is low, particularly when IPAC (Infection Prevention and Control) measures are in place and adhered to,” read the review.

“This trend appears to be consistent in the data collected with early variants of concern. Even when absolute case numbers were high, most infections originated from outside of school.”

The review compared international transmission rates in childcare settings and schools, citing numerous databases and studies, with over 34,000 references.

The findings were published in the Lancet Child and Adolescent Health on Thursday. The results question the validity of repeatedly sending students home to learn remotely during the pandemic.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation local for the Kingston-area Limestone District School Board (LDSB) sent its union members a “member update” warning of potential discipline for violating human rights if teachers use terms such as “blind spot” or tell a student to put their phone away.

The email, obtained by True North and published in full below, was sent by the chief negotiator for Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation district 27, John Vince. It was sent to union members this past December.

In the email, Vince tells the union membership that some views commonly held in the United States and United Kingdom are not allowed in Ontario and that expressing forbidden views could result in discipline.

Joyce, who has lived alone since his wife’s passing, and resides approximately 50 yards away from where the church stood, says neighbours came over to his place to comfort him as they watched the church burn through his window.

Prior to that sombre moment, Joyce missed a call around 4 a.m., and he later received a voice message from another neighbour, who warned him to lock his doors because “a crazy guy” was allegedly in his home threatening him and talking about fire.

“He obviously had gas or diesel or something, because by the time I got myself out and joined another neighbour who came to check on me, the whole one side of the church was in flames,” Joyce recalled.

Joyce says the police “were right on top of it.”

RCMP officials confirmed in a statement they apprehended a man named Cassidy Baron Billy after receiving reports of a stolen vehicle, a man entering a resident and making death threats to a resident, fires to a structure on the West side of Anaham Reserve, and to the Chilcotin Log Church. After Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) became legal in 2016, a Québec court expanded access after it ruled the "reasonably foreseeable" death clause unconstitutional.

In 2021, Ottawa permitted anyone with "a serious and incurable illness, disease or disability" who is in "an advanced state of irreversible decline" to access MAID — not including the mentally ill.

According to an earlier Angus Reid poll conducted with Cardus, 61% of Canadians support current MAID legislation. Another three in five (56%) endorsed the first MAID law.

A combination of events this year could increase Hungary’s relative power on the continent, prime minister Orban has said

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has forecast a right-wing resurgence in Europe that will “occupy Brussels” and “Make Europe great again.” Hungary will take over the EU’s rotating presidency in July, after European Parliament elections in June.

“The stage of world politics at the end of the year will show a completely different picture than it does now,” Orban said during his annual state of the nation address on Saturday.
