Ive made some HDR before and felt it was less photography and more photoshop hackery.

It's fine as a tool, but most of the pictures making use of it end up looking like crap.

The more subtle ones can be decent looking enough.

Did you shoot these? The car with snow is really intriguing.

Nah, I just pulled them off articles showing HDR pictures done right. They're really not my style.

What kind of style do you usually work in? Have any examples?

Lo-fi stuff with a worn, nostalgic feeling basically. I've been shooting with a Holga lately trying to figure out what I'm doing, and don't plan on investing in a scanner until I start to get more consistent results.
Here's a small .jpg of a digital one I took a long time ago. A while back I just realized that film's better at this kind of stuff and took the plunge.

Thats neat! Why dont you digitize your holga shots? You can use your DSLR or any digital camera to take a photo of the negative. Then invert the colors in photoshop or gimp and adjust the color levels to remove the brown from the film. I would really like to see more if you have more!

I plan on doing them in bulk with a scanner once I've got a decent amount of satisfactory rolls. The last roll I got back was entirely blurry, since apparently I had it on the "bulb" setting. My first roll had some keepers, and I should be getting another one back soon. If my next roll has some good pictures, I'll probably order a scanner right away.

I shot it on old Powershot and did a ton of post-processing in GIMP. The process involved a lot of playing with gradients, contrast, and saturation trying to get the right kind of feeling. As much as people like to rag on digital, it's capable of getting solid results provided that you're willing to sink time into editing.

How did you get that pixelated jaggy look on those smokestacks in the second picture?

I use the "shift" and "video" (striped) filters in GIMP a lot to give pictures that worn look. The reason it's so prominent here is that I cropped it out of a larger photo that didn't really work as a whole.
