In order to stave off multiple "is x a good knife?", "what are you're thoughts on y brand multi-tools", "tomahawk, hatchet, machete, or axe?", etc threads that ended up clogging /out/ on halfchan, here is a Tool General thread.

Topics to be discussed (not necessarily limited to)

>knives

>e-tools
>axes
>hatchets
>machetes
>multi-tools
>proper tool usage
>sharpening techniques
>which tool for the job?
>what do you carry?

Hoping this will keep things cluttered free.

I ordered this machete, today. (See image) I plan on using it for general bush/branch clearing. I expect I'll get it within a day or two and then I'll take it /out/ with me for a bit. Will report back with my review of it.

Gerber Gator Machete Jr.
PS. I bought the "Junior" version because it only has a length of 10.5 inches, and I need to fit it in a day trip bag.

Cool! Looking forward to hearing a review. Not much use for a machete where I live but they are nice to have out in brush.

Gerber as a company has been hit or miss for me. Their "Multi-Plier 600 Basic" multi-tool is absolutely great. I took it with me to Afghanistan and used it daily and have continued to (ab)use it daily back here. But I have never been impressed with their knives at all. Let us know what you think of your machete.

I have this knife by Gerber, it has lasted me several years and has not even picked up a speck of rust yet. The blade is perfect for creating tinder, cutting rope, opening packaging, etc. It has a fine weight to it, too, that you can take advantage of to use as a self-defense weapon if necessary.

If you can find them, Lone Wolf makes the absolute best hunting knives I have ever used. They are priced reasonably, made in the USA, and use quality materials. Not trying to be a brandfag, I've used lots of different hunting knives before but they were the best.

I spent 5 months last year traveling solo around Australia. Besides from the stuff only used for fixing the Honda, the tools I used were:

generic pocket knife
paring knife, fork, teaspoon, CHOPSTICKS
small hatchet– which ended up just being used as a tent-peg hammer after I got the Zip Jetboil and stopped wasting time doing the campfire thing.

So! I got my machete in the mail the other day and was able to go for a few hours long hike in the wilderness near my house.

The machete functions great, the blade maintains a sharp edge after cutting through some decently thick saplings and foliage. I was able to slice right through some thicker saplings with one clean swing. The smaller branches seemed to present more of a problem since they would just recoil when the blade hit them, but that could be improved with a more fine edge and a better angle on the swing. My only complaint is that the saw edge is relatively dull and doesn't look like it is really effective for cutting anything other than small branches or saplings - and even that would take a few moments to do with the lack of an edge on the saw. Anyway, hope this review was helpful!

Proof that you don't need to be a gear-queer to enjoy traveling and the outdoors. I always like hearing about minimalist treks like this.

>>124

Cool! Thanks for following up on the review. Out of curiosity how was the sheath? Did you wear it on your hip or keep it in your pack? If hip, how comfortable was it having such a large blade hanging off you while trying to maneuver around through some brush?

That sounds amazing, if you don't mind my asking how much money did you end up shelling out total?

I just ordered the carbon version of OP's knife last weekend, should get here in the mail tomorrow. It'll be nice to move up from a generic pocket knife to something with a little more sturdiness and quality material I think, especially since it's pretty cheap. While I'm here, what's proper care for a carbon steel knife aside from keeping it dry?

That is a bit of a open question, unfortunately quite a fer factors come into play type of steel, thickness what you will be using it for an so forth. Something that I have found that works for me is a convex edge this is not ideal but remains sharp is easy to touch up and tends to be the most useful for me. Also in my opinion it is easy for beginners.

This is not the last word on sharpening but may help you with a very basic grasp on it.

On a stone rest the back of the knife flush against the some. Now with your fingertips gently press the edge against the stone. Try to keep the same angle and sharpen with varying grits dependent on dullness.

If I remember right there's some legend that Kukri have to draw blood if they are taken out, so on traditional versions there's usually a notch like that so if you fuck up pulling it out you'll cut yourself to force the myth.

That one is a myth.
And so are these!
"Practically the notch works as a blood dipper to prevent the blood or fluid from going towards the handle so that firm grip can be maintained throughout the execution and also as a stopper to stop Chakmak (sharpener) from reaching the handle area when sharpening while running down the edge of the khukuri blade. Similarly the notch also has religious significance as it signifies the Hindu fertility symbol (OM) and represents the sacred cow’s hoof (as cow is worshipped in Nepal). It is also believed to have been developed as a device for catching and neutralizing an enemy blade in close combat."

I have been using this at work to cut wraps, plastic straps, and occasionally cardboards.

the thumb stud and inline lock is pretty satisfying to operate with one hand.

The grip is quite comfortable and secure.

There was no blade play when it was new, but after using it daily for months, it's developed some wiggle. Probably just needs to be tightened.

Only bad thing I have to say about this knife is the pouch. The velcro is shit and stopped grabbing.

I might look for another folder from these guys with a thinner blade so that I can cut through cardboards easier.

Simple design and try to stay away from anything that tries to hard to advertise itself on its box.

Examples
> titanium bonded steel stays sharp three times longer
>ultra strong stainless steel blade
> stays sharp longer than the competition

Usually a good knife will state what it is, it's brand and a metal type rather than hiding behind "ultra strong stainless steel" but other than that, look up some reviews of a knife you're interested in

It rusts if you are a dumbass and dont know that carbon steel rusts when wet. That shit needs to be oiled.
So buy the INOX version instead. The blade is thin, but it is a pocket knife. But it is good.

But if you are going to do some proper woodwork then buy a proper knife.>>592

I consider my Opinels as disposable knives, they are nice and very cheap, but they degrade really fast.
When they get big dents (not uncommon) I just sharpen then with a Dremmel. At the end they have the most peculiar shapes which is kind of nice.
