I was thinking about this just yesterday when i remembered how at primary school we had a "tree day": on that day, every year, each kid would plant a pine with a plastic name tag (which would break open as soon as the branch it was attached to grew).
In "The barefoot architect" mr. Lengen mentions how important it is to plant a tree when you have a newborn in your family, it's a gift for the future of everyone and i think i agree with this view.
