It has to do with being able to fight off a wild animal that can claw and bite you to death.
There is a possibility of encountering a thug but going out hiking in America often means putting yourself at greater risk of a wild animal attack than in many parts of Europe since many Europeans allowed themselves to get duped into destroying too much forest to make room for farms and urbanization.

M8 you dont have to hike in the city suburbs in Italy you know? My region (Abruzzo) alone host the largest surface of nationals parks of italy. There are itineraries that last for 2 or 3 day were you will have hardly a chance to refill your bottle. Off course if you want to have a walk in the countryside is a different story.

It's not that they feel a "need" it's that one reason people go /out/ in the first place is exercise, to try and counter the atrophy that comes with their sheltered urban daily life, and frankly America is full of niggers and beaners and it's only getting worse, so it's good practice to be in the habit of carrying a firearm, even when you're doing something else, and being comfortable with it.
