Now before you scream MX-5 at me, consider this: As an all year DD, it costs a lot more to get a miata with an LSD to ensure winter traction, and before you scream BRZ at me, and yes the BRZ does have some good points: The new gauges (yup, '17 86 carries over the old cluster while the BRZ gets the new one), auto climate and a better looking wing, the 86 also has some good points about it: the fluffy dash panel looks better, and in person, the new bumper looks better than the BRZ, and fits more with the car's curvy lines than the straight-edge grille of the BRZ and FRS past, the old gauge cluster, for it's more archaic instrumentation, has the advantage of having round analog gauges in the right pod, where as the new gauges have a square TV sort of not very nicely installed in that round gauge face. And finally, it's a smidge lighter, presumably for lacking that automatic AC and shit.

It wouldn't be right now though, I'd go one more winter with my 13 year old RAV4 and delve into things deeper next summer.

An actual weird thing is, in french, we refer to cars and years as [name] [year] where as in english they use [year] [name], so in french, just saying "Toyota 86" without explanations will conjure up images of a 30 year old beater in most people's minds, and is probably with it's a GT86 in europe. Yeah, the big black thing on the BRZ's front isn't axactly awesome. in photos the new 86 nose looks weird, but in person, it makes the front look lower, and the the chin spoiler being more pulled in in the center than the FRS/BRZ makes the gaping grille a lot less visible. looking over the car from a few meters away, that giant opening is made to look tiny.

I personally would've called it the Celica, honestly. It's a simple lightweight sports car designed to be tuned and modified. Exactly what every Celica from the ST165 onwards did. The Supra name belongs on the BMW-designed halo car that's coming out soon, and 86/GT-S would only work if it was built on the Corolla's chassis.

My only real issue is lack of power. Only 200ph? The WRX makes 300 with that same 2.0. Why won't they add the option for a trubo? If you want a more powerful one or a supercharger you're going to add it regardless, but some people don't want to fuck the warranty on a 6 month car just go get some more power.

I better watch what I wish for. They'll make the STIBRZ 30 grand and at that point I rather the GT Mustang.

For faulty electronics I'd say track down a wiring guide and locate your grounds. If they're corroded or clearly not conducting properly, give them a clean and that should help with weird electrical problems. If the ground is fine but the issue persists then I'd say change the light switch (or whatever you want to call it) as it's probably faulty. and loosing connection.

I didn't drive it hard because it wasn't really a demo, more like a new car for which the guy didn't pass the credit check, so it had 25km on the odo.

No matter, the idea wasn't to hoon it around, but just to drive it normally, see if my huge frame is comfortable, if the controls are instinctively placed, etc, and how it behaves when driven normally, like it will be 98% of the time. And as it turns out, surprisingly comfortable and way way way less harsh of a ride than I expected, despite the studded Hankook i*pikes, in fact it struck me as very supple over harsh road elements, soaking up huge bridge expansion joint very well, better than my RAV4, which is dampened more to soak up long wheel travel than small sharp bumps. The automatic transmission, while not really a concern as I desire a manual, felt responsive and fast, enough so that using the paddles didn't feel like a lame and useless side note to the "D" position.

The sound system which I've mostly heard bad things about, felt… adequate. I expected something along the lines of "must replace with aftermaket system within days", but it feels livable for awhile until a proper receiver can be sourced without rushing.

The LED headlights were one of my biggest concerns, but test driving it at night, I'm glad to say I wasn't displeased with them. OK, so more light and better beams are never enough so there will never be a perfect headlight, but the light output on low beams felt good, specially during gaps in the street light grid, high beams felt VERY powerful, lighting up reflective overhead road signs very brightly, even far off in the distance, though I presume the aim hasn't be touched from the factory and thus is probably aimed too high.

As for power and handles, I did mention it was on studded hankooks, so no comment on handles beyond "responsive and stable" and no comment on power because "don't want to floor new engine that isn't mine" beyond that it didn't feel like an issue, one single aggressive throttle blip in 3rd in the 50mph range instantly lit up the traction control, which wasn't turned off because not-my-car.

All in all a pretty interesting night.

Without any options the difference is only about $2k, and that's brand new. Chances are, and if you give it some time, you could find a slightly used ND for cheaper than a new GT86, just because the ND will have been around longer. The Miata is also lighter and gets better fuel economy, though it does have a lower power-to-weight ratio (about 14.8 vs about 13 lbs/HP). Torque figures are very similar, however. Based on stats alone, I'd say the ND is a better choice. I've never driven either, and who knows how the values will actually end up. It seems to me like the 86 will depreciated slower due to the 86 meme, so the ND could end up even cheaper in comparison.

You might also consider an FR-S - I'm seeing quite a few of those for under $20k. I don't know if an LSD is standard.

The other day I drove 250+ km with 3 adults in the car, and the guy in the back was doing paperwork. Of course it's not roomy, but comments after the journey were positive.

It also returned 7.6l/100km (31 MPG) on the entire trip (incl. the 250+ km drive home) which was done mostly on cruise at 119km/h (74 MPH) in weather that hovered around freezing. I would consider that good. Better than what the manufacturer claims.

Yesterday I went on a rather long drive, set the cruise at the speed limit and chilled for about 200km, then hauled ass down one of my favorite mountain roads sustaining speeds between 145 and 110 km/h for over a hundred km, then stopped into town to have a bite, then went back home on cruise control doing the speed limit for about another hundred km. During that drive, I basically went from sea level to 800-900m (2600-3000 feet) and back to sea level 3 times.

I reset the fuel economy average in the dash as I was leaving, and by the time I was back and refueling, it was showing 6.2l/100km, which is 37.9 mpg.

What I mean is, it isn't underpowered for what it is, looking at it's lap times it's often in very good company. But if you want to steamroll people on straights, then that's pretty much what the car was designed against.

With that being said though, it's a wonderful drive in regular traffic and a very nice high speed cruiser, I spent a few hours the other day at 85+ mph and it was completely undramatic, and even economical, and that was the 6MT with the 4.3 rear end, the automatic with the 4.1 would be even better at that, and having driven it, it's a very good automatic.

I'd never get it in an automatic. With a car like that I know I'm not winning any drag battles against pony cars. Maybe if they have the 4 banger mustang and I'm faster off the line? I'll see where I am a year from now and what I like more, the BRZ or the MX5. I do like the idea of making the BRZ turbo. I could find an FRS too maybe. I'm not crazy about the front bumper of the 86. I would just need to find a place to put the front plate that doesn't fuck with the car. any pics of yours by any chance?

Yeah the plastic thing on the BRZ is a little…eh. I wonder if they have kits to replace it with a full grill. I didn't know Canada let you have no front plate. Guess guy guys have 1 better thing than us ( along with more Skylines) The 86 looks pretty good in that color too.

The FRS looks like it pops out a little less thren the 86 does. You can't buy new FRS anymore so I wonder how many are still sitting at Toyota dealers. I know it has a white cluster and imo those look tacky. Have you thought about adding a turbo at all or are you keeping her NA?

I'm also going to assume all 3 and the MX5 hold up fine since they're jap cars? I don't know shit about how new cars do. I drive a 23 year old GM.

Of course few are the people who are actually made out of money, I wouldn't have been opposed to a used one, but the list of improvements to the '17 is quite large, so while I was ruminating the decision over last winter, I was piling some money, and by the time I was ordering the car, I was pretty much knocking 11.5k out of it along with some trade in shenanigans, which in the end makes it not utterly expensive.

Plates are state by states. Most states down south care about freedom more and let you not dill holes in your car. It's not the case where I am since my state is communist. I said I'd just not put the plate on, but I'm told I'll get pulled over daily for it. It's fucking stupid. You spend 26k+ on a car and ruin the front with an ugly tin plate and before a few years ago they would drill fucking holes in the bumper. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I plan on saving like crazy. I have loans to pay off, but I can manage that and get a car. It's why I'm going to wait till next summer. By then I should know what I want…I hope. Its fun, till now I didn't have a real job so I could never think about getting a car.

Can't it just be zip tied in the grille? It's not like a rear plate that has lights and shit, as long as it's securely fastened and not obscured shouldn't that get a pass?

I went and got my front plate rack, as we still get them, but they're in a little bag in the trunk, and it's a monstrosity, like, as wide as an euro plate and seems to mount in the fucking PAINTED PART of the bumper with HUGE half-inch wide well-nuts.

If I had to have one, I'd definitely go with an aftermarket solution that mounts in the tow hook threads.

I see that one a lot on those cars. Some get unlucky and they drill holes on that plastic part of the BRZ. I see very few FRS and 86 around here for some reason so I can't say for sure

I could zip tie it on. We just have a very ugly plate that stands out like crazy
