Only in the southern states and big cities (Boston, New York, Los Angeles, etc) is it a major problem. Not much different from Europe afaik. Except where you have refugees being placed in rural villages

I'll be the first to unhesitatingly state that the USDM has always been pozzed with automatic transmissions, shitty electronics, and sometimes less shitty mechanics. GM hasn't put out anything decent since the 60s, Ford USA can't design anything reliable with fewer than 8 cylinders in less than 20 years, and Chrysler's only saving grace was AMC. That's what happens when your mainstream culture is based on consumerism and planned obsolescence (which GM invented, by the way).

This is too true to be read. God as a eurofag I like some of your rides (new caddies look great, the Corvette is still a legend), but goddamnit the everyday ride is so boring and impossible to sell anywhere else. You even get European designed cars in mainstream sellers (hi Ford and Buick), where we only get your sport cars.

The backseat is impressive in that 86?

For a 2+2 I mean…

The other day I drove 250+ km with 3 adults in the car, and the guy in the back was doing paperwork. Of course it's not roomy, but comments after the journey were positive.

It also returned 7.6l/100km (31 MPG) on the entire trip (incl. the 250+ km drive home) which was done mostly on cruise at 119km/h (74 MPH) in weather that hovered around freezing. I would consider that good. Better than what the manufacturer claims.

Fun fact:

On a manual car, if you turn on the gear indicator in the dash, you also get the shift up/down prompt arrows that blink at you so you save fuel.

But if you start to drive aggressively, the shift prompts are automatically deactivated so they don't bother you and don't come back until you've driven off from a stop in a normal manner.

Nice touch.

It's actually a manual subaru if you want to get technical about it, but driving an impreza the other day I noticed how many "small things" are from the toyota parts bins. Most things you interact with save for the parking brake lever have the toyota feel, though no matter how much work they did, they couldn't get the boxer out of the engine.

So someone asked me "Why didn't you buy a VW Golf R?"

At the time the question to me by surprise because they're totally not the same thing, so I blankly answered

"Because it's a VW"

But collecting my thoughts, there's a lot more depth to that: in that power range and drivetrain configuration, a wrx is a much better buy. But in the end that's not the same kind of car, and is like asking why someone bought an mx5 instead of a Mustang.

>wrx vs golf r = miata vs mustang

Hardly. The Golf R is in the same class as the wrx (hot not hatch) has more power, more comfort, and more Germany. It's more like Miata vs Z3 M. Mustang is a completely different kind of car from the Miata - all they share is number of doors.

Which wrx is it?

>Mustang is a completely different kind of car from the Miata

That's the point, owning an 86 I was asked why I didn't buy a Golf R: It's absolutely not what I was looking for. Too heavy, too turbo, too many drive wheel, too much stupid german engineering, 10000 $ more, etc. If I had been shopping in that segment, a WRX would have made a much better choice, but I was shopping in the small-light-cheap-fun segment, because I wanted to return to the small-light-cheap-fun of my first car, which was an AW11 MR2

You'd be paying $10000 more for a car that has a mandated minimum amount of recycled plastic. German cars are in such a state that Otto's grave can produce the equivalent of 5000HP.

I would like to add, fuel economy is insane with this car, way better than what's listed on toyota's website.

Yesterday I went on a rather long drive, set the cruise at the speed limit and chilled for about 200km, then hauled ass down one of my favorite mountain roads sustaining speeds between 145 and 110 km/h for over a hundred km, then stopped into town to have a bite, then went back home on cruise control doing the speed limit for about another hundred km. During that drive, I basically went from sea level to 800-900m (2600-3000 feet) and back to sea level 3 times.

I reset the fuel economy average in the dash as I was leaving, and by the time I was back and refueling, it was showing 6.2l/100km, which is 37.9 mpg.

Thirty-seven point nine em pee gees. I am astounded.

I keep telling myself I want to find a 90s jap ca like a NA or a 2.5RS, maybe an AE86 but this thing calls back to me, I see used one going for 15-18k, but for that much I could do better…can't I? That's Honda S2000 money. Thats buying a NA and making her look real nice money. All the 90s jap cars I find are too good to be true deals or so broken I'd never dream of DDing it….maybe a year from now I could get a used BRZ that hasn't been beat to death before it turned 5 years old. Because I'm an auto mechanic.

But also: finding a good price on a clean "classic" japanese sports car that hasn't been beat to shit is going to be fucking random luck. And even once you have one, it's still not a great idea to DD because the car itself is a scarce, finite resource.

The reason a GT/86/BRZ makes sense as a DD is that it isn't something special, it's literally made from the subaru parts bins, if anything happens to anything you can probably get most things fixed on the same day with no hassle.

The only other new car aside from the BRZ that I like at all is the new MX5. I still think the front is too angry, but the cars been growing on me,however I'd still like a NA or NB over it…

What I mean is, it isn't underpowered for what it is, looking at it's lap times it's often in very good company. But if you want to steamroll people on straights, then that's pretty much what the car was designed against.

With that being said though, it's a wonderful drive in regular traffic and a very nice high speed cruiser, I spent a few hours the other day at 85+ mph and it was completely undramatic, and even economical, and that was the 6MT with the 4.3 rear end, the automatic with the 4.1 would be even better at that, and having driven it, it's a very good automatic.

I lived next to a subaru dealer (I didn't move, they did) and say the refreshed BRZ every day for months last year when it came out, I'll say that pictures make the subaru look better, but in person the toyota looks better, the recessed grille makes the nose look longer and lower, and being recessed it doesn't look as huge and gaping as in pictures, while on the subaru the large flush grille and huge black bar don't stand out in a good way. The subaru bumper is also full of straight lines and angles which are nowhere else on the car, which is stupid?

Also, front plates are a provincial thing, Quebec has no front plates, but Ontario does for example.

Of course few are the people who are actually made out of money, I wouldn't have been opposed to a used one, but the list of improvements to the '17 is quite large, so while I was ruminating the decision over last winter, I was piling some money, and by the time I was ordering the car, I was pretty much knocking 11.5k out of it along with some trade in shenanigans, which in the end makes it not utterly expensive.

Plates are state by states. Most states down south care about freedom more and let you not dill holes in your car. It's not the case where I am since my state is communist. I said I'd just not put the plate on, but I'm told I'll get pulled over daily for it. It's fucking stupid. You spend 26k+ on a car and ruin the front with an ugly tin plate and before a few years ago they would drill fucking holes in the bumper. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I plan on saving like crazy. I have loans to pay off, but I can manage that and get a car. It's why I'm going to wait till next summer. By then I should know what I want…I hope. Its fun, till now I didn't have a real job so I could never think about getting a car.

Can't it just be zip tied in the grille? It's not like a rear plate that has lights and shit, as long as it's securely fastened and not obscured shouldn't that get a pass?

I went and got my front plate rack, as we still get them, but they're in a little bag in the trunk, and it's a monstrosity, like, as wide as an euro plate and seems to mount in the fucking PAINTED PART of the bumper with HUGE half-inch wide well-nuts.

If I had to have one, I'd definitely go with an aftermarket solution that mounts in the tow hook threads.

But if you're buying used the damage will already be done.

I see that one a lot on those cars. Some get unlucky and they drill holes on that plastic part of the BRZ. I see very few FRS and 86 around here for some reason so I can't say for sure

I could zip tie it on. We just have a very ugly plate that stands out like crazy
