Find a way to improve the low-end torque

Car sharing/taxi-riding at the moment, but once I move jobs, I'm either getting a 2011 Saab 9-5 or an earlier Saab 9-3. Also considering a pre-facelift Volvo S60, but it's a bit feminine for my tastes.

Got the Challenger back today. Drives easily 50% better then it did. Makes me realize that it really was a dog when I got it. Also makes me realize how much noise a shit driveshaft makes.

It's so nice to be able to mash the pedal and overtake now with no risk of the car exploding.

1976 Ford Bronco.

New paint, grabber Green Color.
New fabbed bumpers.
Replaced hardtop for a softop.
5.0 HO swap with serpentine setup.
Replaced 3 on the tree with a C4 automatic.
Small fixes like carpet and seats.
Temporary shitty gauges on dash.
4 in lift and 33 in Travelall tires with aluminum wheels.
> Working on
Finding a new 302 short block.
Finding a M5R2 tranny to swap.
Gauge rewiring (its messy as fuck)
> What I want to do
Rip the fucking mess of a dash out and make it proper, be it turning into a race car dash where i have to turn everything on manually or a smooth dash with few buttons
Finally clean up the engine and get it running nicely and have nice parts, I have a ticking coming from one of the cylinders so I'm just waiting for it to explode.

1997 Jaguar Vanden Plas:

Just got through changing the oil today, switching from 10W30 to 10W40 on a recommendation.

Before that? Within the past week I've swapped out the coils, sparkplugs, their O rings, and the valve cover gasket. 2 out of six were good, so I'm keeping them around in case one of the new coils fry, which they probably won't.

I now have to contend with replacing the seals & gaskets for the rear end axles. And while I'm doing that, I'll be replacing the rear end shocks & their bushings as well as the front end shocks.

After that, bodywork: Some guy backed into me at an intersection, and have to replace the hood & grill.

Update to this. I want a louder exhaust on it; nobody fucking hears it coming. That may improve the power, as well.
Maybe replace the air intake, if I can find one that will actually DO anything, and not suck water/ice into the engine, or bring in air so cold that the fuel won't combust.
That was an issue with my old car in winter. That, and all the fluids going gloopy.

Oil. I want to get the right oil for it, rather than whatever cheap shit the dealership put in.

I adjusted the stereo, and discovered that it needs no upgrades. I found the function that focuses the sound on the Josh!

Bodywork can stay as is. I actually like the way it looks. The new-shape Focuses are lovely.

Frankly, it's never going to be a performance car without an engine swap, so I'm not going to bother trying to make it one. It's a lovely daily Josh, efficient and fun.

When I want a fast, high-performance toy, I will buy a motorbike.

2007 huuuuun-day Tiburon.

The good: it was incredibly cheap, it's reliable, is fun, it's efficient comfortable and it looks good. It's a manual

The bad: it's tremendously under powered, it sucks. Only 5 speed, not a lot of replacement or performance parts. It's Kdm

I installed coil overs. Mm, and act clutch and I maintain it myself almost religiously.

> Your car
2007 Renault Clio Dynamique 1.5 DCi 86PS, 5 door, slate grey. Wouldn't have been my first choice but it was a very generous parental hand-me-down after my old car's engine blew up at a point where I had no money.

> What you've done to it

Blown the gearbox almost immediately (they're made out of wet fucking tissue paper on this car) and thus had to get it replaced. The replacement is also pretty terrible - very easily the worst I've used in 15 years of driving a succession of questionable vehicles - and I'm treating it with kid gloves.
Smashed up the wing mirror after misjudging the clearance by about half a centimetre when reversing out of a deceptively narrow garage entryway.
Changed the oil and filters myself, had the other stuff serviced professionally.
Had a set of all-season tyres put on the front and lost one of them to a vicious pothole within 1000 miles.

> What you're working on

Getting a proper replacement tyre put on in place of the emergency budget one, now snow's being predicted for later in the month (winter has been thankfully mild so far).
Replacing the mirror housing and glass so I'm not looking at a fly's eye view of what's behind me on the passenger side.
Might have the inside valeted as it's getting a bit dirty and it's very difficult to run AC power for a vacuum out to the parking area where I live.
Thinking of adding a properly integrated handsfree kit.
In an ideal world I'd also have it chipped for a bit better power and economy as both are a little disappointing especially given that it's replacing an otherwise similar car with less official horsepower and a more primitive engine.

But in an ideal world I'd also have bought a VW Polo TDi - or at least a mk1 Modus - with my own money, so that probably won't happen, nor any other performance mods (mostly irrelevant when you use the thing for commuting, shopping, designated Josh bar runs, and motorway road trips to see friends and fuel is still £1.20 per litre even after some considerable recent reductions)., because I'm still poor and any work needs to be entirely practical.

Sorry for bringing some depressing reality into this otherwise glorious world of high powered automotive whimsy ;)

I'd like to get the AC working again, new power steering pump, new timing and serpentine belts, getting the smell out of it (former owner was a smoker), new clutch, adjust/fix/replace throttle cable, resurface rotors/replace them, new brake lines, put shifter bushings in, glue in headliner that's falling, touch up the sunroof, and maybe throw in a dashcam and rear view cam. I need to change the trans fluid ASAP too.

it's a daily and I'm a poorfag so I don't want to fuck with performance gains, it runs pretty strong for its mileage already

e30's are good. Any old bmw really theyve come down in price pretty heavilly and out of the box are reasonably sporty. You could look at an old merc, some of those are fairly cheap though older models might require some engine work to get them up to a more fun spec.

im 5'11 and ft comfortably into an mr2 so thats an option, you could also look for a porsche 944 turbo those are great but hard to find in good price/condition.

The 2000 to 2003 early gen 2 I wouldn't say were plentiful as far as manual transmissions went, but there were a few.

The 2004-2005 facelift that got the 2.4l is very very very very very rare with a manual. In fact, I didn't know they existed until this car fell into my lap. I had always thought the manuals had stopped with the end of the 2.0 1AZFE. Personally, I had no hope of getting a rav4 because I knew I could never find a manual with a 2.4 and that beautiful blue those years had. I was either looking for a 3door echo hatchbach I could hollow out and turn into a winter go kart or a nice 2007+ Yaris I could keep clean, then this RAV4 literally falls out of nowhere on me for a fucking steal.

BTW, the earlier model, 2000 to 2003 with the 2 liter is a lot easier to drive with a manual, it's a mechanical throttle and the smaller engine isn't as torquey, the 2.4 got a healthy bump in response AND it's got a very very abrupt electronic throttle. I still love it despite this, because the 2 liter, despite driving smoother, is a gutless wonder.

Also, it's probably one of the very few "SUVs" that actually earn that "sport utility" moniker, as the rear seats fold down, tumble forward AND come out completely leaving a huge flat cargo area. And the "sport" you ask? Despite only having a 4 cylinder, it's geared wicked short so it feels incredibly quick on it's feet. In 5th gear at 60 mph, the needle is terribly close to 3000 revs. 1st gear could be described as violent, as it's an already short 3.833 ratio, it also coupled to a stupidly short 4.562 final drive. Compounding this short gearing, know that it's pretty much the same exact curb weight as a subaru XV/impreza and a good deal lighter than anything in it's class.

90% of the stuff is from Rockauto, so it's really not that expensive.

In any case, it's still cheaper than spending a few grand on a used car, plus the money to fix up all of its surprises. I got this thing for free because my family didn't know how to take care of it and it ended up sitting in the yard, barely drivable. I asked if I could have it, since it was no good to them in its condition.

Also, because it's a shitsmobile decades-class, it's a good car for learning repair and maintenance (babby had zero automotive background before tackling this thing). If I fuck it up, oh well, it wasn't worth that much to begin with.

Funny you mention it, because a friend of mine at work is trying to get me to put a turbo on it.

I've heard that the 3-speed transmissions on these (which I have) can't really handle the extra power though. Don't know if it's true, but I would want to get really familiar with all that before I went in that direction.

I'd love to do it though. People already say it sounds like a V8 or a tank. So it would be nice if it had some bite behind the bark.

I'll look into it. That garage in the background was converted to a room so it makes working on bigger projects a bitch. If it won't take more than a ffew hours I'll definitely consider it.

Any recommendations on which one I should go for?

I've poured way too much money into this piece of shit. 1989 Crown Victoria Wagon. I DD a different car and this one is my project now. I wish I could actually upgrade it but most of the money I choose to spend on it goes to just keeping the fucker functional. It was my only car from when my grandfather gave it to me for college in 2006, to just a year or two ago.

247,000 miles, but the odometer is only five digits so you pretty much have to take my word that it's rolled over twice.

I have replaced:

>brake lines

>tie rod ends

>springs

>shocks

>one or two calipers

>rear brake drums

>rear axle seals

>alternator

>distributor

>ignition coil

>spark plugs & wires

>idle air control valve

>a few relays under the hood

>some vacuum lines that got brittle and broke in the winter

>weird little vacuum switch that unlocks the parking brake when you put it in D

>headlights

>minor bulbs a'plenty

>rust repair

Still need to fix

>broken seat adjustment rail from my fat ass slamming down on it

>leaky water pump seal

>a timing issue (distributor adjustment but I don't have a timing light)

>clogged heater core (bypassed for now)

>needs a coolant flush to get rid of stop leak my dad put in there years ago

>probably needs a tranny rebuild but I might just swap in a manual

>rear tailgate thing doesn't actually latch, just kind of sits there

>passenger window motor disconnected from window somehow, window just falls down

>more rust repair

>car does not actually start right now and I don't know why

Sick Mawds:

>real temp gauge instead of "you're already dead" light

>vacuum/boost gauge (to monitor for vacuum leaks)

>cherry bomb muffler

>+5HP WAT Racing sticker

I want to do some cheap junkyard mods to the engine to get a few more HP out of it, switch to dual exhaust mostly for the sound, and fix up the appearance so it looks more like a classic and not an abused shitbox. But top priority is having it running correctly first.

look into getting the gm superchargers. Check the forums for any similar builds.

Shouldn't be too hard. Worst case scenario you need a bracket to hold the charger and a piggy back.

>>4613

that is a shifty angle gives the car an odd shape.

Get a cold air and an exhaust. Since its a newer model the exhaust manifold bolts shouldn't be rusted up so you could easily get a manifold and full exhaust installed in 4hours.

Well, I looked into the CAI but I keep hearing different opinions on sound and performance. I looked into removing the resonator as well. Apperantly it gives it a nice tone. Somewhat more of a growl than a purr. I'll do more research but thanks for the suggestion. I'm definitely leaning towards getting one though.

I like the sound of the J's 70RS Ti. Only thing is if you put it or any Ti exhaust on a AP1, you'll want to make sure you've done suspension work, as losing 30+ pounds is going to make the rear even twitchier.

Also if you're gonna put any aftermarket exhaust on a S2000, just rip the fucking head unit and speakers out because you aren't going to be hearing them. Just wear earbuds. Or earplugs on long trips. Honestly that's what I did with the stock exhaust.

Really though the first thing I'd do if I get another S2K is start tweaking suspension starting with a front sway, and then save for Ohlins DPV coilovers. I'd also get CR wheels to help settle that rear end down a lil more.

aaf604 No.4825

>>4819

First, I'd take a hard look at it. If it's been outside in the driveway, rust is your first and top concern because there's no reason to put a motor in something that's held together by freedoms and little more.

Look real hard. Don't give it a once over; I'm talking look at the roof of the trunk area behind the lid, look at the inside of the wheel wells, get under the car as best you can and look there too. Look at floor pans, crevices in the engine bay, the lot. Do inspect the frame. Surface rust/bubbles too. Note all rust on paper.

Now, get the dataplate tag and decode it for posterity. Your Mustang may be worth a lot (it's a stretch, but you never know).

Sites like this can help.

http://www.mustangdecoder.com/decoder.html

I'm not a Mustang owner, but it says it should be on the inside of the door somewhere.

You may also like to note down the VIN and run it by the anon that gets free VIN checks over at 4chan /o/ if you get a chance. You probably won't find anything given it's been in your hands for 25 years, but accidents might show up and they may be relevant.

Now, I'd get back to us with the rust status, but let's assume it's all good. You're going to need a little money and some tools. Engines aren't featherlight, plug and play or free, let's face it.

You'll need an engine hoist (couple hundred $'s). Maybe you can get a used one in your area? Consider doing this and reselling when you're done.

Depending on what you want, engines are a bit trickier to come by and you could spend up to or northwards of $1000 for one depending in what state it's in and how popular it is.

I'd see what's available on Craigslist near you, and eBay as well, for starters, and also think about how you're going to get that home. Friends with trucks are useful at this juncture.

2014 Chevy SS. Only mods so far are a RotoFab intake and Livernois motorsports tune.

I'm not sure if I'm going to go any further, debating putting the supercharger from the LSA on it since that's a pretty well understood mod path now and by far the most affordable way to get 500hp at the wheels.

Runs pretty good for a 4 door, especially with the tune cleaning up the super lazy stock shift behavior. I think it's a decent take on a modern sleeper.

But again look up prices and shop cost if it's not something you can diy.

I'd first get a dixis exhaust and ditch the resonators and more free flowing intake.

Also when you're rotors are shot get drilled and slotted rollers.

Then feel free to vinyl the trim, get new rims and paint the calipers.

If you wanna look fast first make it sou d fast

You know, owning a car like that can help you reap all sorts of rewards.

At least over here across the pond, if you own a car made during a certain era (the older, the better), and especially in mint condition, lots of people will approach you in order to help make period pieces set in a certain decade. They'll pay you quite a bit to use your car as a prop, and you get to see your ride on TV.

Has that happened to you yet?

Finally FINALLY got around to the hood like I said I would. Got it off, rust converted a bit and wirebrushed the shit out of it. It's about 1/5 clean. Astute anons will notice the swiss cheese effect at the top left corner; it's rustfucked in two places, with a few more small holes elsewhere. These are only in the bottom layer (hood is two layers spot welded together), so I'm planning to fill them with filler when I'm done because I don't own a MIG welder.

Probably going for satin black underneath, and matt black on top because it's not a factory color anymore because mexicans. Incidentally, the original color of the car the hood came from was gold, and whoever did the lazy ass respray painted the top green.

Also, David Freiberger is right. Mopar hoods are fucking HEAVY. At least a two man job to install, but would be better with three.

2003 Opel Corsa Z10XE

Changed the AC compressor this saturday. Added a black tree behind the vents in the dash for extra fresh. Works a treat, and definitely a good call as today was hot as all fuck.

Next thing to tackle is the locked passenger door. For some reason the lock is stuck in the closed position and no amount of force managed to unlock it so far. Weird bit is that the central locking works, the pin that's attached to the unit works, but it still won't unlock and let me open the door. I suspect either a broken linkage in the bit linked to the door handle inside the unit, or the deadlock (mechanical lock, makes it so the interior pin doesn't open the door as anti theft measure) is stuck.

Of course, it wouldn't be nearly as fun if the door was open and I could just remove the lock.

Sorry, this problem is just bugging the crap out of me is all.

I read that the eighth generation of suburbans had an issue where the rear A/C hose would get plugged from gunk and leak into the back. I checked it myself and it was clear from what I could tell. If it was coolant I probably would have been able to smell it, but the puddle was odorless.

I never thought of the wheel wells, though. Just the way the water would get in the back made me think it was a roof or window leak. I'll have to check that. Sometimes it appears when I drive, other times it appears when sitting outside in the rain.

The only other thing I can think of is a leak at the bottom on the windows, water running in the space between the plastic trim panels and the body, and eventually spilling on the floor. I've seen that on my pal's old car, a pain to diagnose.

But yeah, idk where the puddles were.

Nope, I can't complain about the way it handles, though.

Neat nonetheless. I've always liked Pontiacs more than Chevys.

Pontiac seemed to always try harder to put out cooler, faster, more badass vehicles with character.

Such as on the fourth gen, with pop-up headlights, the rolled the metal on the doors to give them shape(GM told Pontiac they HAD to use the same body panels as Chevy IIRC), and told them specifically that the Trans Am was not allowed to be any faster than the Camaro.

When they introduced the ram air packages, they ended up making more anyway, I think 325 hp from 310 on the post-facelift LS1 cars.

Pontiac had a lot of neat ideas throughout their existence, but most of them got neutered or axed by GM.

I'm in Western PA, one of the only places on the radar that 1-3" was supposed to come down. The roads are covered, and a little slushy, but I'd say it looks like about 2"; it was supposed to be worse the further east though.

MA here, about 10 miles west of boston. Probably about 2 feet. It was really dense which is what killed me.

Back of my Cavalier which I didn't clear cuz it's dead. Anyone in MA wants a cheap econobox I'm selling it for like 1000 max after the mechanic looks at it. more likely 500

They put in a Ferrari engine into a Firebird for shits and giggles once. Don't see that happening anymore.

More on topic I drive a 2000 Saturn SL1 manual, Replaced the heater core (surprisingly easy), and had the Front Bearings, Brakes and Rotors done. According to the manual it should get a coolant flush, and there's a temp sensor that I'd want to replace at the same time (they're common for going bad and it's easy enough to do). Also had the hood changed due to me getting into a crash, it's a lighter colour though. It functional.

I also own a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 4door. Rebuilt the Carb, replaced a fuel line running to it. But it'd kinda been shelved due to the transmission loosing reverse (and me my job) but at least I have a spare thanks to my dad. The installs gonna need new fluid and a torque converter, also the rear main seal. Other stuff is a possible parasitic drain, Door and windows seals, head liner, passenger side electric window motor, driver side electric window switches, maybe the front main seal.

It's also got typical G-body frame rot, but it's no where near the springs so it's fine for the time being though I'll avoid putting heavy shit in the trunk. Frankly if I wasn't so crazy for the V8 and Velour interior I'd probably scrap it

That sounds cool as hell, only Pontiac..

I wish my 'bird was easy to work on; anything that isn't a fluid or right on top is basically a major repair taking me hours to do anything.

Starter took me 9 hours, power steering pressure lines took me about 20 hours.

Hell, I replaced my whole rear suspension, torque link bushing and transmission mount (all time combined) in less or about equal time, I'd say.
