RWD is the historically "pure" option. It requires more skill to control than FWD or AWD. There is less weight with RWD vs AWD. Potentially cheaper/easier to run as well, since many of the production versions of GT cars are RWD.

I just got an answer from my eurofag state's vehicular communism bureau (a.k.a. national society of technical control) about an exhaust modification I plan on my TDi Polo.

Legal modifications mean lots of bureaucratic hurdles here, and a car cannot produce more than 82dB when at moderate revs while stationary, which I'm pretty sure that car is already over from removing the insulation foam from the bonnet, alone. I'm thinking about installing some sneaky cunt flap exhaust.

Tried to go for a nice relaxing drive today. Nobody in front of me would go any speed other than 40 MPH, regardless of which road I chose or what the speed limit actually was. I don't know if these faggots were using their cruise control or what, but at one point I actually let off the gas a bit to make sure that my speedometer wasn't stuck. It wasn't. At least right now, I'm seriously considering doing all of my future pleasure driving at night, because this is becoming a very consistent problem where I live.

Anyway, pics related are of my truck, a 1969 El Camino. It's a little dusty and dirty as pictured, but that's because I'm still working on it. The rest of the dash parts are in the mail, and in a week or two I'll finally put it back how it's supposed to be.

Watch out for block porosity, and at 26k you really should get a new cambelt on there no matter how sure the owner is that it's been replaced. But really, look for signs of coolant dripping down the side of the block. Volvo had some seriously bad aluminum castings in the 90s. Also if you get it, never take short trips or a valve will stick.

This can be nice, but kinda dangerous on unlit back roads. I really like driving through downtown areas at night (as long as it's not the bad part of town, filled with degenerates and criminals at night) when there are at most one or two other cars on the road. There is something uniquely relaxing about being alone in a place that is normally bustling with people.

Nice truck.

Thank you. I love late night driving when I get the chance, but my biggest issue with doing so in this particular truck is that I don't live alone, and my exhaust is a little bit louder than I prefer. I don't want to wake the whole house up at midnight because I need 20-30 seconds of high idle in the garage before I can back out. I've been thinking about putting resonators on when I get the rusty floor repaired. Maybe a glasspack in front of each of the mufflers would be enough to cut the noise down without totally silencing the engine.

Would you guys be interested in a build thread for the El Camino or should I just post the highlights here? If I make a thread, it will cover in approximate order almost the whole dash including an interior paint job, radio and speaker modifications, seat upholstery, floor repair, AC repair, a little bit of wiring replacement, and schedule and budget permitting, some suspension work, rear differential upgrades, body work and paint plus some little things I'm probably not remembering at the moment. I have a lot of time on my hands right now, so it would all go pretty fast once I actually get started. I think I can do what I need to do in two months or less.

>I know I'll regret never trying to get one.

I did the same with an FB RX7, it's not my daily so the problems aren't an issue for me.

check fucking everything about the engine before you buy it, look up compression testing for rotaries as the procedure is a bit odd, check the coolant overflow for sludge/bubbles from a busted coolant seal I fucked myself over with this one, got bubbles. need to do a rebuild this year, oil level and smell(gassy), oil leaks, cold start exhaust smoke, service/oil history, do a full cold start and warm up let it idle for a bit and watch the temp, etc. ask the owner how he drove it in cold weather as they don't like being pushed hard when cold, ask him about the amount of oil it uses per oil change. I know I'm missing some things but that's a good start, you'll have to lookup Renesis specific issues.

if you don't trust the OMP just run some good 2 stroke oil in the gas (I do 50:1 some people do as little as 100:1) till you can remove it and use some seafoam or equivalent to remove some carbon buildup on the rotors.

good luck on your hunt

I really want to daily a MX5 NA, but I worry how long it can stick around if Im putting 120 miles 5 days a week and fuck knows how many I'd add on on the weekends.I'll fines ones in the 5 state area im looking and find ones for 5-6k that are in REALLY good shape and then I feel bad. I feel bad that I'd take something that lived for almost 30 in the North East in a garage with minimal rust and never brought out in the snow, to then make it my daily car that would be kept outside all year long and driven 5-7 days a week.

I also started looking at NBs too.

I might be overthinking it. My current car is 22 and it's lived outside all its life. It's running into the problems of being a GM car from the 90s

I'm no Miata expert, but rust is the only major NA issue I've heard of. The engines are pretty reliable and easy to fix. I don't know how rust-prone the NBs are but it seems like they would be less so.

I do understand your reservations about storing it outside, but cars are meant to be driven. All cars driven in the winter in the northeast will deteriorate quicker due to the salt. I am somewhat skeptical of dailying RWD in the snow - good snow tires would be a necessity unless the roads around you are plowed really well (I live in the northwest and no one was prepared for the bad winter we had this year, hardly anyone has plows here).

They plow them very well all the time here. We don't get hit as hard with the snow as the rest of the north does. We has maybe 2-3 snow storms this winter. The salt damage here is mostly found under the car. A few years ago I put a new starter in my car and looking at it now I see rust forming. The body has no rust ( or very minimal) and the wheels have no rust. Its sat outside its whole life.

The thing I'm going on about is that I'd be DDing the car. My buddy has a Grand National that he only takes out from spring till the end of fall. He also has a garage for it. I don't. Yes cars should be driven, but winter is a mother fucker to cars and I rather not ruin something so nice.

On the subject I keep finding people selling turbo and supercharged ones and I feel a bit uneasy with that. I worry what bullshit problems I might run into from other peoples work. I'd rather get one ones thats still NA and do that myself if I really feel like I need to. At that point I might just want a faster car if speed is what i care about.

There was a Corolla parked on the outside of the curve with their lights on facing the road ahead of me. Someone else came around the curve, drifted out of his lane, and hit me almost head on. The driver said he was blinded by the Corolla's lights, so couldn't see where he was going. He said he jumped out of his car when he hit me (???) and his throttle must have been stuck because his car pushed mine back 30 feet or more and off the road (conveniently right into what little shoulder there was), and then it drifted to the right, scraped my driver side, and went into the ditch behind me.

Both cars were totaled.

Not physically. Needless to say I'm pretty disappointed, especially since due to changing financial conditions I don't think it's a good idea to get another 900 (not that there are really any decent ones around anyway). I've been looking at japs, and it's hard to find anything with comparable cargo space that isn't a mini van or a pickup. I'm seriously considering a Protege5 at the moment but I don't know if I'll like the 2000s feel. I tried looking at 90s Accords but there aren't many in manual. Integras and Civics are on the list too but I think they will be too small. I'd love to try a Miata but I know that is way too small so I won't even bother.

Does anyone know any other 90s japs with good cargo space? Relatively comfortable seating for four would be preferable as well (another reason I'm skeptical of an Integra).

The other guy was apparently pretty fucked though. He said his parents kicked him out of the house in January and he just lost his job, and then his car got totaled so he's out of a car too. He's only 19. He had a nose ring, and a big sub box in his trunk, and a couple of allegedly under age girls in his car who weren't supposed to be out at that hour, so he's probably a punk-ass cunt, but I can't help feeling bad for him.

Checked out one of these today. It was the only one I've found in my area that's in good condition. Aside from some weirdness with a swapped engine it was pretty much perfect. It was comically slow, especially compared to my 900, though entertaining in the 15 minutes I drove it. Fingers crossed that it works out, it's the only thing I've found that comes close to fulfilling my needs…

Update on the car shopping: the dealer with the Protege5 I liked turned out to be the stereotypical used car dealer and tried to bullshit me on various things including the KBB value of the car, some of the problems found in the inspection, and standard equipment he claimed were options. So I won't be going with that one.

I'm leaning back toward another Saab as an option as well as a mini truck. The P5 is still on the table.

I said this in the 86 thread but I'll say it again.

They seem confused about what they want it to be. Earlier on, they advertised it at auto shows alongside the 2000GT, which it is related to by it's boxer engine. But they named it after the AE86, and have only lately advertised it alongside that. It's just a Subaru either way, which doesn't even work because it's not AWD.

I think it was more meant to be a celebration of Toyota's history (and conveniently forgetting about the Supra and Celica). But it winds up with an Identity crisis because of that (being spread over three brands, one of which is entirely separate from the other two didn't help either).

It's double dumb to compare it with the AE86 which was mainly a Corolla that happened to be RWD and light.

Toyota probably could have taken the Corolla chassis, rework it to be RWD and strip the thing down, kept everything in house and came out with something that would have sold just as well. Maybe even better if they could keep the price down to the 20,000 the GT86 was supposed to be.

And the 2000GT was supposed to be a "Fack you rook what we can do" exclusive GT car, not some Sports car of the people.

>It's double dumb to compare it with the AE86 which was mainly a Corolla that happened to be RWD and light.

IIRC the standard Corolla was RWD until shortly after that car, and it happened to be light like all other cars from that time. The principal difference between it and the regular Corolla was the engine. Your point still stands though, the AE86 was a lot closer to the regular Corolla than the GT86 is to any other car in the Toyota fleet.

>Toyota probably could have taken the Corolla chassis, rework it to be RWD and strip the thing down

I don't know if they would have done that, considering what they did with the Celica in the late 80s. I agree about the price.

The heating element is on the inside of the window, and only gets hot enough to evaporate condensation. On most cars I've been in it's not even hot enough to do that. Regardless, it doesn't affect the outside of the window at all. The only thing you would have to worry about would be something on the inside of the window.

In Oregon it's only cold enough to freeze for 1-2 months of the year. Most of the time it's just condensation on the windows. That could change if this last winter marks a new trend.

In my Saab, it took 20+ minutes to completely defrost the rear window, if it ever did. It defrosted lines around the heating elements big enough to let me see that there was something behind. I don't know if they were malfunctioning or what. My mom's minivan works better than that, (I think anyway, the rear window in that rarely even gets fogged) but I don't think my dad's Mustang works very well. Have a stock 89 jeep wrangler, I love getting waves back from other jeep's because its so much fun! But its always the newer jeep vehicles that never wave back or women. What the hell? What other things do small car cultures do that others wont get?

Also what should I get for my jeep? Its fairly standard and not lifted, all it has is some really mud tires and that makes it a pain/impossible to drive on a highway, what other cars can you fairly customize without looking so bad? I know jeep customization is really fun, expensive but fun and for the most part it will fit in, I want to have mines look like pic related

I did plenty of repairs already, i need more tools. And relacement parts. 30% of my front right wing is not even metal, it's foam. And i need a welding machine for rear supension, it is so rotten i can see light through it.

Sometime next month i am taking apart the panel to fix wind whistling in vent system, and to replace old styrofoams.

I will wash it though, i found a vacuum for insides too.

FWD is shit to race in unless you're either looking to do nothing but drive in a straight line (muh drag racing), or to crash and die from understeer.

Personally RWD is my favorite, but I would use AWD for racing such as grip (I have a skyline gtr34 specifically for this)

>>13018

This is why you need a car to be faster than police cars (unless you plan on just track racing, in which case, should still be faster than police cars), you could get a sleeper exhaust though, but turbochargers would be pointless because you need a wider exhaust rather than a straw, superchargers would be your only option.

Don't get an RX-8. If you want the bittersweet blessing of a rotary engine, find an FD3S RX-7, it was way more reliable. Just a heads up if you decide to get one, you are going to have to completely change your driving habits. It's not going to be a daily car unless you have a lot of time on your hands. You are going to need to allow a minute after you start it of it sitting rather than just allow 10-30 seconds of usual time it takes for stroke engines, and you cannot just turn it off after you turn it on, you'll need to wait at least four minutes before you turn it off. Failing to do either of both can flood your engine, which will fucking delete everything. Be prepared to do a lot of maintenance, because these cars are made as racers factory spec, like I said, these aren't dailys. I'd forget about getting the power steering, and if you don't have a choice, then get the power steering removed. Power steering is a joke anyways, it barely helps you turn your tires, and the difference is barely noticeable (at least to me). Power steering is for wimps anyways.

You can usually setup the suspension to eliminate FWD understeer. RWD is better because it doesn't understeer as much by design and accelerates better out of corners, but again is harder to control because too much throttle causes oversteer. AWD does provide better handling if tuned correctly but adds quite a bit more weight, which is why it is not used much outside rally.

I just spent about five weeks trying to find out why my tachometer didn't work. If it was plugged in to the distributor, the engine wouldn't start, and the needle wouldn't move. If unplugged, the engine started, but obviously the tach didn't work. Tried everything I could think of. I replaced the coil and HEI module, traced circuit boards and ignition parts with a multimeter, read and reread datasheets, tried a tach filter, ran another wire to bypass the car's wiring harness, tried a different tachometer, and probably more. It was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. I was about to borrow an oscilloscope to try to determine if I needed to build an adapter circuit when I noticed that the +12V and signal wires were crossed this whole time. I uncross the two wires and it works perfectly.

I want to die.

I guess you should check the wiring first next time.

My windshield washers aren't working. I would check the pump right now but I have to lift the car and pull back the fender liner to get to it and my garage is still full of other people's crap, and my driveway is a hill.

ddb003 No.13544

In the future, I'll definitely triple check the wiring before I touch anything else. To add insult to injury, I knew about the wiring problem when I started working on it. I thought I had fixed it before I tried to connect everything, but apparently I just put it back the exact same wrong way it was to begin with.

It's a huge pain, but it's not all a bad thing. I had already been planning to buy a spare ignition coil and module already because they do go bad once in a while, and now I have a spare of each on hand. The module is the only electronic part on this car other than the radio, so it's good to have a backup.

>and my driveway is a hill

If you have steep enough wheel chocks and a shallow enough hill, you could jack up the front and work on it that way. I saw somebody in my area work on their car that way for close to three weeks earlier this year.

It's not that steep, maybe 30 degrees, but all I have for chocks right now are pieces of firewood. My dad changed the oil in the mini van recently by clearing a space in the garage and pulling about a third of the car in, and presumably chocking the rear wheels with the wood. I've been reluctant to do it like this because I'm paranoid that the chocks or my handbrake will fail (not that my handbrake is in any state of disrepair). On Monday I'll probably try what my dad did, since the rest of the family is going on a trip and the driveway will be empty, and I think I can clear some more space than before by pulling some stuff out rather than just pushing it back into the garage.

It turns out that the ignition coil I bought to try to fix the tachometer problem is defective. It ran slightly rough from a cold start, but backfired through the carb on every warm start. These aren't little pops. These are loud gunshots that cause smoke to come out of the air cleaner. Richened up the idle mixture, took all the initial timing out of the engine, and it still backfired. Swapped in the old coil, reset the timing and mixture, and it runs perfectly. Now I need to get my $35 back and clean the soot out of the carb.

Why are LS-fanboyim so eager to defend their favorite engine to the death and beyond?

>"Yeah the LS wins the power v.s. weight v.s. cost argument as long as you're in the USA, but I still don't like the engine, I don't like the sound and I think LS swaps are kind of overdone"

>immediately they spring into motion, throwing fucking essays about power v.s. weight v.s. cost at me

>even though I clearly stated that, in the USA, the LS wins in that regard

>they then go on calling me a troll, a hater, a pussy for "not being able to handle" the LS

I don't know, perhaps I'm getting old, but driving is an experience and unless you're hunting for the last millisecond in a track time (perhaps 0.1% of the car community does), having the most efficient engine with the most power really doesn't matter. These people that want me to shut up because I don't like what they like, they disgust me greatly.

I don't really get it either. When I put the new engine in the El Camino, I did some research on the topic. My understanding is that the LS is still basically a 1960s engine, and the reason it was a popular swap is because they have factory aluminium heads and roller cam, which makes an LS an easy junkyard swap if one has the time or money to deal with all the bullshit reengineering motor mounts, exhaust routing, the oil pan, the transmission/driveshaft, etc. If a person is buying a crate engine, a traditional SBC/BBC wins in cost, parts availability, accessory availability. The only real con I can find in the old Chevy engines in this context is the older firing order, but with headers the 5-7 event can be ignored until a low nine second quarter mile. Changing the firing order would also change the exhaust tone that you and I like.

I would guess that a very large part of the reason why people prefer the LS engines is marketing. The typical car guy here in America doesn't strike me as particularly intelligent, and I suspect that when companies started shilling LS engines and parts, most of these people ate it right up without a second thought.

In my sure to be unpopular opinion, jerking off your horsepower rating is only a few steps away from ricers in terms of cancer. I would rather own an old Eastern Bloc milsurp vehicle with 40 horsepower than own a Turd Gen with 400 horsepower, because the former would just be so much more interesting to me and other car enthusiasts I'd run into.

Matt Farah even said in his podcast that after driving several LS swapped cars, with the exception of the LS swapped MX-5 ND he drove, all of them only ever felt like a slightly smaller/bigger Camaro in the end. All that fucking time, sweat and money only for you to end up with basically just a Camaro. LS swap is stupid because if I wanted a car with an LS engine, I would buy a car with a fucking LS already in it. Engine swaps, in my humble opinion, are usually only worth it if the engine in question came from a car that is nearly impossible to get for a reasonable price in your country and thus the engine swap would actually be cheaper (2JZ, RB series, etc.).

I'm working on my 91 nissan maxima se and it sure is a shitbucket. Its pretty dang rusty, but not bad for the Midwest. Better than my other vehicle that's 10 years newer at least. Its got a leaking abs pump that's impossible to find a working replacement for and its got vacuum leaks but she runs with a good clutch and I hope to have her repainted and cleaned up by the end of summer. I will then promptly place it under a large tarp and hide it from the evils of winter.

It's an oil separator for the crank case ventilation so the engine doesn't burn oil anymore. It's supposed to prevent carbon deposits on the intake valves, too.

The Polo has an extremely cramped engine bay (the only space I found to fit the thing was 30*30*30cm), and this was the only way to do it so I can still return it to stock when I bring it in for oil changes.

I know it ain't beautiful, but look at that engine bay. It has more cables and hoses than the entirety of the ISS, anyway.

Yes, I miss the low tech 90's diesels.

I meant, I know what it is, I just can't wrap my head around your install. You already don't have a lot of space, you decided to occupy that space with huge iron and brass fittings and elbows as well as massive and quite rigid reinforced hoses.

It's a PCV system, you could have used PCV hoses and a few hose bend coils. You could have mounted the valve the other way so you didn't have to loop over it. Shit, you could have probably mounted it right besides the head so the outlet was directly besides the intake tube, only needing a short length of hose to complete the setup.

I mean, you obviously waited awhile for that oil separator… and it's not like you didn't know how to fit it, you had the dimension diagram and all that, you easily had the time and means to plan the install… but didn't.

644f76 No.13714

Two problems with that:

1. Where the fuck do you find PCV hose? I live in communist EU, that shit is very specific. We don't have much of a tuning scene here, because the nanny state tightly regulates the things you may fit to your car. Hydraulic hoses was the best I could find, but I could check on the local "tuning" shop. I doubt they have 1'' PCV hose, though.

>You could have mounted the valve the other way so you didn't have to loop over it.

Then the oil separator would collide with the fuse box and the crash sensor.

>Shit, you could have probably mounted it right besides the head so the outlet was directly besides the intake tube, only needing a short length of hose to complete the setup.

Impossible. Too little clearance between the head and the hood.

Granted, I didn't put that much thought in this, but it's improvable, at least. I guess.

I mean, it really is a shit install, but with the tools I have and the tool I am, It's about the best it's gonna get.

Volkswagen really didn't help, though. Right behind the oil separator, there's a fucking relay station sending brake fluid to the EGR valve, the intake pressure sensor and the turbocharger.

Look, I'm from Luxembourg, precisely the South West of Luxembourg, and this godforsaken region is run over with French. Turbines are always the first thing to break, and 2.0 is about as far as you can push a 4-cyl engine. So it likely means a 4banger being abused to the limit every time the turbo kicks in.

Turbos fail because of a lack of driver education, VWs or not, but the modern VW 2.0t turbo likes to piss oil earlier than most. Displacement has nothing to do with "pushing a 4-cyl to the limit", making a 2.0 isn't just a case of boring out a 1.6, engines are designed for their intended displacement, GM used to makes a 2.9l inline 4, Toyota's been making 2.7's for 20 years.

But anyway, here's the last 2.0t vw I had to deal with.

Well it's important to judge cars individually. At 200k it may be a self-propelled oil leak, or it might have been fixed somewhere pver 100k and be fine.

When they start leaking, they leak from EVERYWHERE: Valve covers, plug grommets, head gaskets, oil pan, so it's easy to detect.

But if it doesn't drive for long, is expensive to maintain, is hard to get parts for, is the drive really worth it? Subaru fixed their shitty head gaskets, but their engines still aren't that great. Parts are expensive, are they not? And boxers are shit to work on in situ.

If they had done up their 2.5L straight four a bit and put that in the 86 instead of the stupid boxer, it would have been cheaper and they would have sold way more.

For a small car with a small tank it drives pretty far, and it is likely to be one of the lowest cost-to-run sport coupes out there, brakes are straight up impreza parts, tires are 215/45R17 which are cheap and plentiful. The only high expense is the 0W20 oil, but that's where every maker is going.

I do agree that the car could have been as good with a non-boxer engine, but living with it day to day, there is one thing I love the boxer for, and that is the low hood. Most low sport cars have bulbous hoods to clear their tall engines, and that has an impact on visibility, which is a problem the 86 doesn't have, and driving it is a strange contrast of being both lower and having better forwards visibility than most cars. Regular service on a boxer is easier than on an inline or V engine since accessories are laid out on top. the only real problem is plugs, and with modern iridium plugs, that's not actually a problem until like 150000km. If you've got some real failure and have to do some in-engine repair, pulling an NA boxer out of a subaru and working out of the car is actually easier than working on most engines in place. They're super easy to remove.

Now the one thing people like to hate the engine for is the torque dip, but on a '17 with the 4.3 diff it doesn't feel like a big deal. Besides, it's not even a torque dip at 3-4000, it's a torque bump at 1500-3000. When you understand that making 100hp/l requires a certain lift and duration and a certain intake, port and exhaust design to support it, and what effect that has on engine that does NOT have a VTEC/VVTL-i system, then you start to appreciate the low end bump they did manage to give it with the VVT in the "everyday" RPM range.

I mean, even I like to give subaru some shit about their leaky piece of shit EJ, but every FB I see at work is bone dry, even the 100000+km ones.

It just so happens I just did a large maintenance on a 140000km FB25 in an outback.

That shit was dry as a bone, not a single leak in sight. the only part that failed on that engine during those 140000k kilometers was the flex joint on the left bank of the exhaust header, which is why it is removed in the picture.

At 140000km the plugs were still VERY nice, but were replaced anyway, as the guy drives a lot (it's a 2015!). right bank was easier than expected, left bank was tight, even taking out the battery tray, but the hardest part of the job was unlocking the coil connectors, which use metal clips.

As for the rest of the car, it had a rear pinion seal failure, and the pinion flange needed a speedy sleeve.

The rest was all fluids and shit, so pretty reliable overall. The exhaust manifold would have even gone under warranty if he had had it checked a week ago, as subaru's warranty on that item ended at 130000km, which probably was last week. Thank you LKQ for a nice used one from a 12000km donor, R&R was ridiculously easy, My boss was like "What? it's already done?"
