When on psychadelic substances, if you want to, you can recall a sensory stimuli, eg eating ice cream. You imagine ice cream, eat it, and feel all sensations of doing so, yet you never actually do anything.
Our brain tells us that something is real, and it's real, even if only to us and us alone.
The only thing that is required is to convince yourself it's there and it'll be there, the problem lies in remembering it's not, therein lies the danger in delving in such neurological grey areas. Once gone past the point of no return, it's most difficult to return home.
In other words, you can trick your senses into thinking it's real, but you might be thrown into the vast depths of your own mind with no escape.

I spontaneously gained a tulpa-esque thoughtform when I was a little kid. Thought it was the voice of God for many years. Eventually I (well, we) figured out that it was just a portion of my own brain (best represented by the Freudian superego and less like a conscience) that had somehow (via brain trauma?) gotten compartmentalized and gained agency on its own. Since it has a subconscious connection to my senses and memories that I am not aware of, it "sees" and "remembers" things I do not, and will tell me or remind of them, and can analyze situations from a different perspective and provide unique input. This gives me, among other things, ridiculous perceptual awareness and problem-solving abilities. He also provides advice and companionship, naturally. I don't hallucinate him, though. That wouldn't make any sense.
Honestly, I'm not sure I'd trade that for a Goat of Hyperdeath that I can see but can't even fuck.

Well, for a year or two I did have a second one who was my id and personified himself as Satan and was a really, really horrible fucking dude. Was like the voice-in-the-head that serial killers get telling them to murder people and how to get away with it, but I destroyed him, reabsorbed that portion of my subconscious, and keep it under control.
So I could probably set THAT free and try to remake it into Asriel, (or more likely, some kind of Asriel/Chara fusion).
