No amount of polish is going to make a buggy UE4 sidescroller feel smoother than a regular 2D. The kikestarter backer monsters also stand out pretty poorly with the actual demons in the game. That said, the gameplay itself is great.
I say that as someone who doesn't like Metroidvanias and prefers Classicvanias. Miriam's moveset incorporates rekkas, quarter circles, and all manner of input commands specific to that weapon to show off flashy moves. Move variety really helps it flesh out the gameplay. Hard mode gives extra attacks and better placement to the enemies, but normal is made specifically for people who can't get past Zangetsu, IE the game journalist setting. Casuals are still getting bodied by Zangetsu on normal, though, which is hilarious to me.
It's not pretty to look at and the texture quality differs so wildly it's jarring, but it's got a good artistic direction to it. And titties.
