Biden seeks 5-year extension of New START arms treaty with Russia

U.S. President Joe Biden will seek a five-year extension to the New START arms control treaty with Russia, the White House said on Thursday, in one of the first major foreign policy decisions of the new administration ahead of the treaty's expiration in early February.

"The president has long been clear that the New START treaty is in the national security interests of the United States. And this extension makes even more sense when the relationship with Russia is adversarial as it is at this time," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a briefing. She also said Biden had "tasked" the U.S. intelligence community for its full assessment of the Solar Winds cyber breach, Russian interference in the 2020 election, Russia's use of chemical weapons against opposition leader Alexei Navalny and alleged bounties on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. "Even as we work with Russia to advance U.S. interests, so too we work to hold Russia to account for its reckless and adversarial actions," Psaki said. The arms control treaty, which is due to expire on Feb. 5, limits the United States and Russia to deploying no more than 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads each.

In addition to restricting the number of deployed strategic nuclear weapons to its lowest level in decades, New START also limits the land- and submarine-based missiles and bombers that deliver them. In a statement, the Pentagon said that Americans were "much safer" with the treaty intact and extended. "Just as we engage Russia in ways that advance American interests, we in the department will remain clear-eyed about the challenges Russia poses and committed to defending the nation against their reckless and adversarial actions," Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.

The treaty's lapse would end all restraints on deployments of U.S. and Russian strategic nuclear warheads and the delivery systems that carry them, potentially fueling a new arms race, policy experts have said. Earlier, a source familiar with the decision told Reuters that U.S. lawmakers have been briefed on Biden's decision on the New START treaty.

The Kremlin said on Wednesday it remained committed to extending New START and would welcome efforts promised by the Biden administration to reach agreement.

American Hotels Experienced Worst Year Ever

According to STR, Inc, a hotel industry market data firm, 2020 was absolutely the worst year on record for hotels as industrywide profits fell to zero, as the virus pandemic and resulting government-enforced social distancing measures kept travelers at home.

STR's latest report said the US hotel occupancy rate was 44% for the year, down from 66% in 2019. This was the lowest occupancy rate on record. In an earlier STR report, we noted weeks ago that the industry had one billion unsold room nights for the first time, surpassing the record of 786 million in 2009.

Even though S&P Global Ratings warned a few months back that the hotel industry's recovery may not occur until 2023, STR now believes a recovery in occupancy rates back to 2019 levels may not occur until 2024.

Best Western CEO David Kong recently told CNN that "If we don't get a vaccine soon and business doesn't return, it's going to get much worse."

With the vaccine rollout slower than anticipated, along with a rampant virus, leisure travel will most likely remain depressed in the first quarter of 2021.

Commercial-real estate experts at Trepp outlined last month that the overall credit performance of commercial real estate loans tied to hotels continues to show "pandemic related stress."

Even with the industry crushed by the pandemic, stimulus, vaccine hope, and the reopening trade have backstopped BBB- tranche of the CMBX Series 9 index (overly exposed to malls and hotels) from falling lower.

There's no real timetable to say when corporate travelers will start booking hotel rooms again, considering the proliferation of work-at-home and Zoom calls. There could be a permanent decline in traveling due to the virus pandemic, resulting in an unprecedented wave of hotel foreclosures.

For many years, a handful of people have postulated that those who control industry, finance and governments are essentially the same people – a cabal of sorts that have, over generations, solidified their relationships in order to gain greater wealth and power, whilst systematically making things ever more difficult for the free market to exist.

But why should this be? Surely, corporate leaders are more ardently capitalist than anyone else?

Well, on the surface, that might appear to make sense, but once a significant position of power has been achieved, those who have achieved it recognize that, since they’ve already reached the top, the primary concern changes.From then on, the primary concern becomes the assurance that no others are able to climb so high as they have.

At that point, they realise that their foremost effort needs to be a push toward corporatism – the merger of power between government and business.

This is a natural marriage. The political world is a parasitic one. It relies on a continual flow of funding. The world of big business is a study in exclusivity – the ability to make it impossible for pretenders to the throne to arise. So, big business provides the cash; government provides protective legislation that ensures preference for those at the top.

In most cases, this second half of the equation does not mean a monopoly for just one corporation, but a monopoly for a cabal – an elite group of corporations.

This corporatist relationship has deep roots in the US, going back over one hundred years. To this day, those elite families who took control of oil, steel, banking, motor vehicles and other industries a century ago, soon created a takeover of higher learning (universities), health (Big Pharma) and “Defense” (the military-industrial complex).

Through legislation, the US was then transformed to ensure that all these interests would be catered to, creating generations of both control and profit.

Of course, “profit” should not be an evil word, but under crony capitalism, it becomes an abomination – a distortion of the free market and the death of laissez faire economics.

Certainly, this sort of collectivism is not what Karl Marx had in mind when he daydreamed about a workers’ paradise in which business leaders retained all the risk and responsibility of creating and building businesses, whilst the workers had the final word as to how the revenue would be distributed to the workers themselves.

Mister Marx failed in being objective enough to understand that if the business creator took all the risk and responsibility but gave up the ability to decide what happened to the revenue, he’d never bother to open a business. Even a shoeshine boy would reject such a notion and elect to go on the dole, rather than work.

Mister Marx sought more to bring down those who were successful than to raise up those who were not, yet he unwittingly created a new idea – corporate collectivism – in which the very people he sought to debase used the appeal of collectivist rhetoric to diminish both the freedoms and wealth of the average worker.

On the surface, this might appear to be a hard sell – to get the hoi polloi into the net – but in fact, it’s quite easy and has perennially been effective.

Update (1415ET): We've seen a flurry of new coronavirus news reported published early this afternoon, beginning with a slight ray of hope for Washington DC residents after a difficult week. On Friday, the inauguration-related "pause" on dining in public will be lifted, allowing Americans to eat indoors, so long as the capacity is 25% of total.

Elsewhere, vaccine skepticism is once again the name of the game in France on Thursday, where President Emmanuel Macron warned French politicians and the French people not to assume that the virus will simply disappear once vaccinations are complete.

In other news, a reporter grilling Joe Biden about the US's weak vaccination targets elicited a frustrated response from Biden, who raged "Give me a Break!" at the reporter in question. Here's how that went down.

REPORTER: "You set the goal at 100 million vaccines, is that high enough? Should you set the bar higher? That's basically where the US is right now." BIDEN: "When I announced it, you all said that it's not possible. Come on. Give me a break, man".

Search Traffic For Trump’s ‘Patriot Party’ Skyrockets

TOPLINE As the clock ran out on Donald Trump’s presidency Wednesday, search interest for a new party led by the outgoing president skyrocketed, one day after the Wall Street Journal reported Trump had privately floated the radical idea in recent days.

Search interest for terms like “Third Party,” “New Party,” or “Patriot Party”—the name Trump has reportedly floated for a party offshoot—spiked on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the media intelligence platform Zignal Labs.

From January 19-January 20, there were 131,000 mentions of a new party led by Trump across social media, broadcast, traditional media and online sites, though it’s not clear how much of the search interest was generated by the Journal article.

One “Patriot Party” Twitter account reached 95,000 followers Wednesday, while a Facebook page under the same name reached 16,000 likes.

“Patriot Party: Born January 20th, 2021” one user wrote on thedonald.win, a popular Trump message board while another Trump supporter said simply the “threat” of a “Patriot Party” would “terrify” Republicans.

High court denies government responsibility for Fukushima nuclear crisis

The Tokyo High Court on Thursday ordered the operator of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant to pay damages to evacuated residents, but it overturned a lower court ruling that had also acknowledged the central government’s responsibility over the 2011 nuclear crisis.

Among around 30 such lawsuits across the country, the decision of the Tokyo High Court was the first high court ruling absolving the state of responsibility, contradicting an earlier decision of the Sendai High Court in September that ordered both the state and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. to pay damages.

Presiding Judge Akira Adachi said it cannot be said the state could have predicted a huge tsunami like the one that struck the Fukushima plant. He said it is difficult to ascertain that the state’s measures against tsunami was problematic. In March 2017, the Maebashi District Court awarded a total of ¥38.55 million to 62 plaintiffs who evacuated from Fukushima Prefecture, including those who voluntarily left, acknowledging the government and the utility were negligent in preparing for a tsunami.

The district court said the disaster was caused by a failure to cool nuclear fuel as water entered turbine buildings through air supply openings in the wake of the tsunami triggered by a massive earthquake, crippling emergency switchboards. The lawsuit was filed by a total of 137 plaintiffs relocated to Gunma Prefecture and elsewhere. They sought a combined ¥1.5 billion — ¥11 million each — in damages for emotional distress. They were forced to leave their hometowns as three reactors suffered meltdowns at the plant after the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami hit northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011.

The plaintiffs said they had lost their livelihoods and faced inconvenience for an extensive period, and the amount they received under the current state compensation guidelines was not enough.

Dr. Anthony Fauci reappeared in the White House press briefing Thursday, admitting that he felt more liberated speaking about the coronavirus under President Joe Biden, rather than former President Donald Trump.

New York Times reporter Michael Scheer asked Fauci to share his emotional thoughts about the change of administrations and speaking about the virus going forward.

“The idea that you can get up here and talk about what you know, what evidence, what the science is and know that that’s it, let the science speak, it is somewhat of a liberating feeling,” he said.

Scheer noted that Fauci had already joked about feeling liberated under President Joe Biden.

“You said I was joking about it. I was very serious,” Fauci said with a laugh.

Fauci said that he did not take “pleasure” in contradicting Trump but said he experienced relief at being able to talk like a scientist.

He also said that he was pleased that he did not have to contradict the president on issues of science.

Let the Senate’s Show Trial Begin

During her first softball briefing, Jen Psaki, Joe Biden’s press secretary, assured America that the U.S. Senate can “multi-task” by conducting its routine business and proceeding with a trial against former President Donald Trump at the same time. “[Biden’s] gonna leave the mechanics, the timing, the specifics of how Congress moves forward on impeachment to them,” the ex-Obama staffer told a Fox News reporter Wednesday.

The House of Representatives hastily impeached Trump a second time on January 13, one week after the so-called insurrection at the Capitol. The former president was charged with “willfully inciting violence against the Government of the United States” for allegedly provoking the mob with his speech prior to Congress’ formal certification of the 2020 election.

Ten Republican House members, including U.S. Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), voted for the resolution; Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), bitter after losing control of the Senate, suggested on the Senate floor last week that Trump did in fact fuel the mob.

A ‘Restoration Caucus’ for Resisting the Globalist Occupation Regime

I have accepted the fact that I can no longer remain in my chosen profession of public education. I can no longer work for an institution that is in the hands of a globalist occupation regime, a regime whose only unifying characteristic is its implicit hostility to the historical American nation and its descendants. I am changing careers and moving to Red America.

Why “globalist occupation regime?” Because it sums up the essence of our situation.

It is globalist. It sees the world—nations, cultures, localities, religions, and people as replaceable Legos. The globalist is a “citizen of the world,” which is to say a citizen of nowhere. The globalist is just as likely to be a capitalist as he is to be a Communist.

Not understanding this fact is perhaps the greatest oversight made by right-leaning thinkers for at least a half-century. They believed that international Communism was the greatest threat to the United States. They did not understand that international capitalism—with its love for dual citizenship, transnational elites, its predatory and exploitative view of national economies, and its relentless drive for profit over local economies was as great a threat as the revolutionary communist menace.

As the most powerful international corporations conspire to stifle and destroy populism in the Republican Party or drive it back into submission as the permanent outer party, this will become more and more clear….

Texas Attorney General to Sue Biden Admin Over "Illegal Deportation Freeze"

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Thursday evening announced he will be taking action against the Biden Administration over its “illegal deportation freeze.”

Biden signed an Executive Order on Wednesday putting a “temporary” 100-day freeze on deportations of illegal aliens.

Joe Biden put illegal aliens over taxpaying American citizens in his quest to destroy the US.

Mr. Paxton sent a letter to Acting Secretary of Department of Homeland Security David Pekoske demanding the agency immediately rescind its “illegal, unconscionable deportation freeze” – or Texas will sue.

“Border states like Texas pay a particularly high price when the federal government fails to faithfully execute our country’s immigration laws,” Paxton wrote.

Paxton argued the DHS violated an agreement between DHS and the state of Texas.

“I won’t tolerate unlawful acts from Joe Biden’s administration. Today, I am taking action,” Paxton said Thursday night.

Trust In Media At All Time Low: Majority Believe Reporters Purposefully Trying To Mislead People

Each year, the American people seem to trust the media less and less.

- This year’s annual survey from Edelman shows trust in traditional media and social media are at all-time lows. The annual trust barometer, shared exclusively with Axios, found fewer than half of Americans trust traditional media for the first time since the survey began. From Axios (emphasis original):

- 56% of Americans agree with the statement that “Journalists and reporters are purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false or gross exaggerations.”

- 58% think that “most news organizations are more concerned with supporting an ideology or political position than with informing the public.”

- When Edelman re-polled Americans after the election, the figures had deteriorated even further, with 57% of Democrats trusting the media and only 18% of Republicans.

The media doesn’t seem interested in repairing that trust. The first person Axios quoted about the problem was a woman trying to correct misinformation about vaccines – a laudable goal – but who told The New York Times: “[W]e don’t have a misinformation problem, we have a trust problem.”

Except, media misinformation really is the problem for many Americans. The media regularly gets stories wrong, particularly big stories, with disastrous results. Immediately reporting on police shootings, for example, led to riots and billions of dollars in damage to innocent businesses because the media routinely misreports the facts surrounding those police shootings….
