The Marine Corps Has Started Fielding 30,000 Rifle Suppressors to Combat Units

After years of planning, infantry Marines are finally getting their hands on small arms suppressors aimed at helping combat units avoid detection while firing on enemy positions.

Marine Corps Systems Command began fielding the first 13,700 Knight's Armament Company suppressors designed for M4 and M4A1 carbines and M27 infantry automatic rifles to Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The command hopes to field approximately 30,000 of the devices by fiscal year 2023.

"We've never fielded suppressors at this scale," Maj. Mike Brisker, weapons product manager in MCSC's Program Manager for Infantry Weapons, said in a Tuesday release. "This fielding is a big moment for the Marine Corps."

Task and Purpose first reported the start of fielding this month.

Infantry weapons create an incredible amount of noise on the battlefield, but adding suppressors helps muffle their "audible and visual signature, making it more difficult for the enemy to ascertain their location," Chief Warrant Officer 4 David Tomlinson, MCSC's infantry weapons officer, said in the release.

Reducing the din of battle also significantly improves the ability of small units to communicate with each other during a gunfight, Tomlinson said.

"I would say the most important thing the suppressor does is allow for better inter-squad, inter-platoon communication," Tomlinson said in the release. "It allows the operators to communicate laterally up and down the line during a firefight."

In the long run, Marine officials also hope the suppressors will help reduce hearing damage suffered by Marines in combat units.

"In the big picture, the [Department of Veterans Affairs] pays out a lot in hearing loss claims," Brisker said. "We'd like Marines to be able to continue to hear for many years even after they leave the service. These suppressors have that benefit as well."

Marines identified the benefits of equipping combat units with suppressors in 2016, when a battalion from the 2nd Marine Division suppressed its individual and crew-served weapons during a Marine Corps Warfighting Lab experiment.

"The positive feedback from that experiment was the primary driving force behind procuring suppressors," Brisker said. "We've had a few limited user experiments with various units since that time, and all of those events generated positive reviews of the capability."

Special operations units across the services have long used a wide variety of commercial suppressors in combat. Now more and more Marine commanders have requested suppressors, arguing that they will increase the effectiveness of their units on the battlefield.

News of the suppressor fielding has created a groundswell of excitement among the Marine units receiving them, Tomlinson said.

"As I travel and brief units, this capability has generated the most interest–from lance corporals to colonels," Tomlinson said. "There has been an overwhelming excitement to receiving the suppressors, which we anticipate will serve as an effective capability for the warfighter."

Landslide buries sleeping Norwegian village, hundreds evacuated but 21 still reported missing

Some 21 people are missing and hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes after a landslide ripped through a Norwegian village on Wednesday morning while people were still asleep, according to local media.

The landslide struck at around 4am local time on Wednesday, engulfing multiple houses with people inside and creating a giant crater in the Ask village in Gjerdrum, 19 miles (30 kilometers) north of the capital Oslo.

The crater measures roughly 300 by 700 meters and is apparently still moving.

Between 500 and 700 people have been evacuated from the area, with 13 injuries reported so far, including one person who is in a serious condition and being treated at Oslo University Hospital.

There have not yet been any reports of fatalities.

At least 14 buildings are said to have been affected by the event, which is now being referred to as a “disaster,” as announced by head of the police operation, Roger Pettersen, speaking to broadcaster NRK.

But local officials say more buildings could yet be affected.

Police believe that several people may be inside the landslide area, while drones and helicopters are monitoring the site, although rescue crews have not yet been physically deployed in the affected zone, according to reports.

“The situation is dramatic and confusing,” said the Mayor of Gjerdrum, Anders Østensen. “We are working hard to create a safer environment for the evacuees.”

There are close to 50 ambulances at the site, while 32 dogs from Norwegian Rescue Dogs are on standby before they are allowed to enter the landslide zone.

Jonathan Pollard, who served 30 years in US for spying for Israel, given hero's welcome by Netanyahu

Former US government intelligence analyst Jonathan Pollard – who spent 30 years in prison for spying on behalf of Israel – received the red carpet treatment from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Pollard – who was given Israeli citizenship in 1995, before being released from prison in 2015 – arrived in Israel with his wife Esther Pollard on Wednesday after travel restrictions that stopped him from leaving the United States were lifted.

Upon their arrival in Israel, Pollard and his wife lowered onto their hands and knees and kissed the ground, before being greeted by Netanyahu and presented with identity cards. Pollard and Netanyahu then engaged in a coronavirus guidance-friendly elbow bump, with Netanyahu telling the ex-spy who was born in Texas, “You're home.”

Pollard served 30 years in prison for selling top secret US government documents to Israel, and the incident caused a riff in US-Israeli relations for decades.

“We are ecstatic to be home at last after 35 years and we thank the people and the prime minister of Israel for bringing us home,” Pollard declared on Wednesday. “No one could be prouder of this country or this leader than we are.”

The former spy also said that he and his wife “hope to become productive citizens as soon and as quickly as possible and to get on with our lives here,” calling Israel “a wonderful country” with “a tremendous future.”

“It is the future of the Jewish people and we're not going anywhere,” Pollard proclaimed.

AP reported that the plane used to transport Pollard to Israel belongs to billionaire and top Republican Party and Donald Trump donor Sheldon Adelson, who was a vocal supporter for Pollard's release. Photographs taken on the plane showed Pollard and his wife in coronavirus face masks.

Several journalists and former intelligence officials criticized Pollard's warm welcome in Israel, calling him a traitor who was motivated by greed.

“I'll never understand this. Pollard was a traitor. You can believe that his sentence was harsh and that he served his time. But he is no hero. And it's embarrassing that he is treated like one,” protested Politico senior national correspondent Bryan Bender.

“Just to be clear, Pollard an American was spying on behalf of Israel, an ally and recipient of tons of financial aid from America. And they are now celebrating this traitor. How Trumpian,”added former FBI agent Joe Navarro.

Jed Hickman Named SEC’s EDGAR Business Office Director

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that it has named Jed Hickman as the Director of the SEC’s EDGAR Business Office (EBO). Mr. Hickman, who has been serving as Acting Director of the office since April 2019, will assume his new role immediately.

The EDGAR Business Office provides executive-level oversight of the SEC’s Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval (EDGAR) system that provides investors with free online access to financial disclosures by public companies. The EDGAR database also includes filings by mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, variable annuities, and others.

The EDGAR website on SEC.gov is considered one of the federal government’s most valuable, receiving nearly two million electronic filings and handling more than 24 million search requests per year.

“Information is the lifeblood of our markets and EDGAR provides the backbone,” said SEC Chief Operating Officer Kenneth Johnson. “Jed has demonstrated strong leadership and deep knowledge of EDGAR and the EDGAR Business Office, and I look forward to his continuing contributions to the EDGAR program.”

In addition to serving as the business owner of EDGAR, the EBO Director is responsible for EBO’s legal, technical, and operational units, overseeing everything from rulemaking analysis to governance, planning, budgeting, and customer support related to EDGAR.

Mr. Hickman was EBO’s Deputy Director from September 2018 to April 2019, when he was named Acting Director of the office. He joined the SEC in January 2014 as Branch Chief for the Office of Information Technology’s Application Management unit, with responsibility for EDGAR system operations.

Before coming to the SEC, Mr. Hickman spent 16 years working in software development, IT infrastructure engineering, IT operations, and IT project and program management in public and private industries.

Mr. Hickman holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri.

Putin signs law banning funding of rallies from abroad

According to the law, protest organizers will now be required to submit information on the funding of their event to the authorities

MOSCOW, December 30. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law banning foreign funding of rallies, which obligates protest organizers to provide details of their funding allocated for the organization of public events. The document was published on Wednesday on the official legal information portal.

The law bans organization of public events funded by foreign states, organizations, citizens and stateless persons, as well as non-commercial organizations listed as foreign agents, Russians under 16 years of age, anonymous benefactors and legal entities registered less than one year before transferring funds or property. Unregistered public organizations and individuals branded as foreign agents will not be allowed to fund protests either.

According to the law, protest organizers will now be required to submit information on the funding of their event to the authorities. This measure will concern events that include over 500 participants.

UAE Hub Of Companies Assisting Venezuela In Circumventing U.S. Oil Sanctions: Reuters

An investigative report by Reuters has discovered that Venezuela was avoiding U.S. oil sanctions with the help of none other than the United Arab Emirates.

Back in June 2020, the US began sanctioning at least 6 oil tankers managed by established shipping firms.

The slack was picked up by a little-known company based in the United Arab Emirates.

The vessels were renamed and then began shipping again.

“The company, Muhit Maritime FZE, is one of three UAE-based entities identified by Reuters that have shipped Venezuelan crude and fuel during the second half of this year.

Their role emerges from an examination of internal shipping documents from Venezuela’s state oil company as well as third-party shipping and vessel tracking data.

Tankers managed by the firms have transported millions of barrels of oil produced by state-run Petroleos de Venezuela SA, or PDVSA, since June, according to the internal documents and a publicly available shipping database.”

Basically, if a tanker is sanctioned, there’s immediately a new one to replace it.

“The three companies – Muhit Maritime, Issa Shipping FZE and Asia Charm Ltd – did not respond to letters sent to their listed addresses, or to emails sent to their registered email addresses. Reuters was unable to determine the ultimate owners of the three. Their ownership and management details aren’t listed in the UAE’s publicly-available corporate registry.”

Initially, companies were popping up buying Venezuela’s oil, but now transport companies are also popping up to handle that part of the logistics as well.

The three companies’ shipments of Venezuelan crude and fuel represented about 3.9% of the South American country’s total oil exports in 2020 through December 18th.

“We are closely tracking these kinds of creative efforts by companies to evade sanctions,” a U.S. State Department spokesman said in response to questions about the UAE-registered firms. “Those behind shell companies would not be wise to consider themselves shielded from sanctions.”

The spokesman declined to comment on possible future sanctions, but added: “U.S. friends and adversaries alike should know that their companies, front companies, and tankers remain vulnerable to sanctions if they are complicit in activities that facilitate PDVSA’s exports abroad and the Maduro regime’s efforts to evade sanctions.”

The UAE itself admitted it was investigating into what was going on.

It said in a statement that “a thorough and comprehensive investigation is fully underway into” Muhit Maritime, Issa Shipping and Asia Charm.

The Congress approved the legislation earlier this month, the ninth time abortion activists have attempted to legalize abortion in Argentina. In 2018, a proposed abortion law galvanized pro-lifers across the country and the continent. Millions joined the Blue Wave movement, with more than four million marching in Argentina to protest legalization and massive rallies pushing back against abortion activists in Guatemala, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and elsewhere. Scenes of celebration awash with green last night are the inverse of that joyful night two years ago, when it was pro-lifers cheering in the streets.

Many pro-lifers expected a narrow victory last night, with the Catholic clergy calling on politicians to reject the bill – although there has been widespread disappointment with the extraordinarily muted response of native son Pope Francis, especially considering the wide range of issues on which he frequently comments. A strong majority – nearly 70 percent – of Argentines do not support abortion, and Evangelicals marched rank and file with Catholics to stop the proposal. President Alberto Fernandez, who heads Argentina’s left-wing coalition government, has long promised to ramrod legalization through anyhow.

Argentina’s Blue Wave movement is now regrouping to strategize a response. One speaker, addressing the mourners from a makeshift stage, promised to fight on: “We are witnessing a defeat of life. But our convictions do not change. We are going to make ourselves heard.” Pro-life activist Sara de Avellaneda told the Clarin newspaper that the fight against abortion will continue: “I came because I had to be here. We are not invisible. Not everything is a green tide. This law is unconstitutional and its implementation is not going to be easy.”

Cost Of Doing Business: Big Banks Have Paid $195 Billion In Fines Since 2000

Often times when the "too big to fail" banks are caught with their hands in the cookie jar (or placing the entire global economy on the precipice of collapse, as was the case in 2008), nobody goes to jail and the banks wind up paying a hefty fine and putting the "youthful indiscretions" behind them. This inevitably leads to jokes about how paying fines is part of the cost of doing business for big banks.

But it isn't until you aggregate the sums paid over the last 2 decades, which FT did in a report published this weekend, that one can really see just how much these fines actually are becoming a cost of doing business for banks. Over the last 20 years, the six largest U.S. banks have paid out nearly $200 billion in fines and penalties.

Advocacy group Better Markets found that Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo have paid $195 billion, collectively, since 2000. The group claims the numbers show banks behavior deteriorating, as they have endured more fines since the global financial crisis than prior to it.

There were 85 major legal complaints against banks between 2000 and 2008. Between 2008 and 2012, that number was 110 cases, most of which were mortgage related. But since 2012, the group found that there has been another 204 legal actions.

Better Markets chief executive Dennis Kelleher said: “They’re all major legal actions . . . It’s not like it was a ‘broken windows’ theory post-crash where prosecutors are fining every little violation. If they were held to higher standards they all would have been put out of business because the recidivism is really quite shocking.”

He continued: “It’s absolutely shocking that JPMorgan has now pleaded guilty to three separate criminal charges for egregious years-long criminal conduct.”

Banks like JP Morgan are repeating past mistakes, too. In October, the bank paid $920 million for manipulation of the metals market - this comes after the bank admitted AML failings in 2014 and pleaded guilty in 2015 to manipulating FX markets.
