For as long as she can remember, senior Cassidy Hutchinson has admired the men and women who enter public service. A former intern for House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and Senator Ted Cruz, her latest stint on the Beltway took her to the executive mansion. "I have set a personal goal to pursue a path of civic significance," she says. "Interning on Capitol Hill confirmed my desire to continue a path in government, and when I learned about the White House internship I was eager to apply."

The White House Internship Program is a hands-on opportunity designed to mentor and cultivate young leaders and prepare them for future public service. It is a highly coveted summer gig, with a rigorous screening process. "I was brought to tears when I received the email that I had been selected to participate," Hutchinson says. "As a first-generation college student, being selected to serve as an intern alongside some of the most intelligent and driven students from across the nation – many of whom attend top universities – was an honor and a tremendous growing experience."

Hutchinson worked for the Office of Legislative Affairs, which advances the administration's agenda in Congress. Her days often began with a daily strategy meeting with White House senior staff. Typical responsibilities involved drafting public messaging in support of administration priorities, facilitating communication with Congress, and assisting legislators at White House events.

For Hutchinson the most memorable part was the day-to-day exposure to the inner workings of the government, and the opportunity to leave her mark. "I attended numerous events hosted by the president, such as signing ceremonies, celebrations and presidential announcements, and frequently watched Marine One depart the South Lawn from my office window," she says. "My small contribution to the quest to maintain American prosperity and excellence is a memory I will hold as one of the honors of my life."

Back at Christopher Newport, Hutchinson has buckled down for her senior year. "My classes are intellectually stimulating, yet it's my professors that will be my fondest memory," she says. "They have provided an enriching educational experience both in and out of the classroom while offering constant encouragement." She adds that CNU has helped her develop her professional skills through various events, such as career fairs and guest speaker series. "Having the opportunity to participate in these events prepared me for professional interviews and pursuing workplace relationships."

After graduation, Hutchinson plans to head back to the nation's capital to continue her burgeoning political career. "I'm keeping every opportunity at my fingertips and am open to any job that comes my way," she says. "I am confident I will be an effective leader in the fight to secure the American dream for future generations, so they too will have the bountiful opportunities and freedoms that make the United States great."

Trump names new acting director of legislative affairs(TheHill)

President Trump on Friday appointed a new acting head of the Office of Legislative Affairs to replace departing director Eric Ueland.

Amy Swonger, currently the deputy director of legislative affairs with a focus on the Senate, will take over as head of the office. Swonger has been in the White House since the beginning of the administration and was previously considered for the job when Shahira Knight vacated it in 2019.

Cassidy Hutchinson, who has held various roles in the White House, will now serve as coordinator for legislative affairs for chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Swonger will likely play a key role in any future negotiations on stimulus legislation to boost the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic, though White House officials and Senate Republicans have yet to commit to another package.

The changes are the latest staff turnover since Meadows replaced Mick Mulvaney as chief of staff in March. Ueland’s departure was expected in recent weeks, and his last day was Friday, according to a person familiar with the matter. He is expected to be nominated for a role in the State Department.

Ueland took the legislative affairs role in June 2019 after spending more than two decades working on Capitol Hill. He was a key figure in coordinating the president’s impeachment defense during the Senate trial in January and a frequent presence in legislative negotiations.

(NEXSTAR) – After more than a decade, Google is preparing to shut down its messaging platform, Google Hangouts, and to transition users to its newest service, Google Chat.

Hangouts – which was originally part of Google+, according to The Verge – allows users to message others or video call them. It can be accessed via a standalone app and an online feature. Google announced changes for Hangouts users in late 2020, which included directing them to use either Fi, Google’s cell phone service, or Google Voice.

Chat became free to access shortly after, and was added to Google Workspace in place of Hangout earlier this year.

In a Monday blog post, Google announced Hangouts will no longer be available starting in November 2022. If you use Hangouts on your phone or desktop, it’s likely that you’ve already been prompted to move to Chat.

Starting in July, those who access Hangouts in Gmail online will be upgraded to Chat in Gmail. According to Google, Hangouts on the web will still be available to access until fall. Users of Hangouts on the web will receive a notice at least one month before Hangouts begins redirecting to Chat on the web.

Chat is similar to Hangouts and other messaging platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams. It allows users to send private or group messages; offers Spaces as “a dedicated place for topic-based collaboration;” and can be accessed via an app. Users can also access Chat in an integrated view in Gmail.

“We have big ambitions for the future of Chat, and over the coming months you’ll see even more features like direct calling, in-line threading in Spaces and the ability to share and view multiple images,” Ravi Kanneganti, a product manager for Google Chat, wrote in Monday’s blog.

Hangouts isn’t the first platform to enter the “Google grave.” Among those is the aforementioned Google+, which was replaced with Currents about three years ago. Currents will be replaced with Spaces – already a feature within Chat – in 2023, Google announced in February.
