In one way, it sometimes confuses me how Oneohtrix Point Never's earlier music resonates with me so much emotionally. It's music that most would argue to be more for the soundtracks to vintage Science Fiction movies. Yet, I think the 'vintageness' is exactly why it hits me so much. The town that I grew up in, was severely hit with multiple recessions from the mid-70s to mid-80s. The music itself is too "lowkey" to hit the well-known highs of science fiction of Blade Runner, but the album is an emotional slow burner.
Hell, my hometown also went to the gutter in terms of infrastructure, and while it was experiencing the 'rural decay' every place in Rural America, the little town of the Mountain States got finally internet in the 2000s via CenturyTel DSL. When internet was installed, every person in town (myself included) went wide-eyed in idealism in how the internet would save the town. The Information Superhighway was finally unlocked for the small people we were, from the accountants for chain restaurants, to the local rancheros just outside of the city limits. Anything was possible with the Web of Knowledge. Anything was possible.
Nothing happened. Jobs were still lost. Poverty and Unemployment still penetrate the whole region to this day. It took Facebook and Samsung Galaxy smartphones just to get everybody fully on board.

Pic related and others similar to it feel weird to look at. I wasn't even born until pic related was taken somewhere a decade after that photo. It's like a knowing of what was one the warmth of people living, is all missing in the second photo. The pictures aren't even from where I once lived, but are actually from out in Centralia of Pennsylvania, but I can feel a sense of that lost warmth, despite being an entire coast away from me.
