http://www.parentherald.com/articles/17911/20160128/the-winds-of-winter-release-date-update-george-rr-martin-book-nowhere-near-finished.htm

Hello everyone, I am a lazy fatass fuck. It takes me 7 fucking years to write a penny-dreadful, film-script based "novel". And it doesn't matter that it's my full time fucking job, literally the only thing I'm required to do, or that I jack off at 67 years of age by taking bum fuck vacations all over the world to live off the prestige of my now stagnate series that I can't fucking finish, that I'm constantly giving interviews and bullshit for the industry, and that I'm writing OTHER books that literally no one gives a fuck about. That's right, I'm not writing for the series that is the sole reason for all my fame and which everyone wants, no, I write other books that are truly shit and no one gives a fuck about. And when those that gave me all this money call me out on this shit, the best I can do is twiddle my fat fingers, flip them off and then whine on my blog about how ashamed I am of being a lazy fatass fuck. Oh, did I mention that I waste time playing videogames? I have all this responsibility, I'm 67 fucking years old and I waste time playing videogames, because that's really going to get the job done and get all these people off my back. Did I mention I'm a lazy fatass fuck?

And this is why I've learned to hate not just trilogies, which could be bad enough, but also endless door-stopper epic series clogging the consumer marching order best seller lists.

Superstar hotshot celebrity author franchise monopolies are the greatest drag on modern fiction. One novel, one story. And the world would be a better place.

Could have fooled me, i thought he was an exemplar of business-as-usual "pragmatism" that is far removed from any kind of post-modernism, unless you meant to say that he's caught up in the postmodern zeitgeist, in which case so are you and everyone else on the earth except those who can afford to shut themselves off in premodern cocoons. This is an excellent example of why a series is nothing to be impressed by. Even experienced well established writers should know better. Newer writers take note: a single novel is trouble enough.

Even Asimov was pressured to expand his original Foundation trilogy, and he was only able to deliver two really worthwhile volumes out of four. A series is more often an example of the school ground dealing perversity of a publisher than a writer's grand artistic accomplishment.

I've seen paperback editions cropping up all over in library surplus sales, and some thrift stores. We're talking a quarter a pop per volume. That's one way of doing it.

Or you can go all out old skool and check one out from a library proper.

Last time I looked they're all available from the usual yo-ho-ho sites. There's even one with the full collection of the current series. Install Calibre and go hunting. That's probably the best way if you just want to get an idea of what all the fuss is about, without any greater commitment.

It's a funny thing. I've found the complete (to date) series at library surplus sales, at a quarter a pop per volume. Thrift stores all over have them.

Maybe it was like this for Asimov and Tolkien, back in the day.?

Everyone I know has experienced GoT via the TV series. It makes more money for him while at the same time killing book sales, I think. Maybe it's just plain old market over-saturation.

At least Stephen King's Dark Tower series is complete. I want to have go at that when I get a chance. GoT can wait, however long it takes. I won't touch it until complete (the TV series be damned), if ever.

I can't speak for Asimov, but I remember hearing an anecdote about Tolkein that his books just did not sell at all until the hippie movement were like "wait, this book supports our environmental message, maaaaaaaan!" The anecdote is that Tolkein was reading it to a bunch of his friends at a writing workshop and one of them, lying on a nearby couch, suddenly screamed "Oh FUCK! Not another elf!"

and, on the subject of the Dark Tower, a woman on her deathbed once asked to see Stephen King and he obliged because he's a nice guy, so she asked him to tell her how the Dark Tower series was going to end so that she would know before she died. He told her he didn't know. She died before the last book came out. Imagine how she felt.

>Tolkein that his books just did not sell at all until the hippie movement

>this trope again

Not at all true.

Certainly the hippies were big fans of the book(s) but it would be MORE accurate to say that it was releasing the books in paperback in the early 1960s that made Tolkien's books fly off shelves. But LotR was selling well pretty-much from the beginning. Which is remarkable when you think about it.

The thing about it though is that it never sold like a Dan Brown novel, it just kept selling well year-in, year-out, and eventually it's sold like 100 million copies and people go… "Oh, must be all that hippies and DnD that did it."

Anyone who thinks that is just too lazy to remember the 1950s.

https://www.quora.com/Were-the-books-of-The-Lord-of-the-Rings-known-before-the-movies

(To be fair, actually finding sales of a book from the 1950s using the internet is nigh on impossible. So, anecdotes in pic related will have to do.)

It certainly was not a "sleeper hit" that the hippies made happen. Hell, there had been two radio plays of the books produced by 1961 – loooooooong before the hippies.

Oh and they weren't "environmentalists" back then, they were "at one with nature, maaaan". They became the greenie movement, sure, but don't make the mistake of thinking they're the same thing – hippies wouldn't recognise greenies of today. They loved the book because it was weird, strange, and sensed kinfolk in the simple-living hobbits.

And this:

>The anecdote is that Tolkein was reading it to a bunch of his friends at a writing workshop and one of them, lying on a nearby couch, suddenly screamed "Oh FUCK! Not another elf!"

Fuck you've got it all muddled.

THAT quote is of a very straight, very NOT-a-hippy buttoned-down Oxford fellow (in American terms: professor) Hugo Dyson who was an expert on Shakespeare, a member of the inklings and not at all a fan of Tolkien's high fantasy stories so much so that he is recorded, by Tolkien Jnr, as reacting thus to another of Tolkien's readings:

>lying on the couch, and lolling and shouting and saying, "Oh God, no more Elves"

This happened in about the 1930s, maybe 1940s, which I think we can all agree was a FUCKING LONG TIME BEFORE THE HIPPIES. We know it happened no later than the 1940s because Tolkien stopped attending Inkling meetings after each of the members successively pissed him off, the last being C.S. Lewis.

I am not aware that he EVER ran a writers workshop especially since such things did not fucking exist in his time. At BEST it would have been a literature class, but I think the closest he got to one of those was running seminars or lectures on 10th century literature, such as Beowulf. Contrary to popular belief, Tolkien wasn't really a writer that he would hold a writer's class: he was a mythologist who happened to like creating his own. It was really only because Lewis kept convincing Tolkien to publish.

Basic linguistics should be a requirement for fictional settings. Like, what is the implication that people in Westeros have painfully modern but slightly archaic misspelled Anglo names? Do they speak English? Is the text "translated" and they misspell their own language? Is misspelling a trend? Pure coincidence? Wrathful gods imposing poorly spelled English on Westorians? Really makes you think.

GRRM is peak boomer; GOT is intredasting as a Quentin Tarantino phenomena within the fantasy genre, but the amount of conceit in that OP pic interview is bemusing. Likewise, the only redeeming, compelling aspects of Star Wars lore centers around retconning Jedi culpability/autism/laser child samurai cult, with the Empire clearly a necessary development of a decadent multi-national/ethnic/world Republic going Caesarion, and at the end of it Luke - and New Republic/Imperial Remnant - reconciling it all in the face of a bigger bad. Fortunantly for Martin/HBO, they started filming before the election– otherwise the temptation to insert an election allegory would torpedo season 8/9 viewership.

>>8662

>>11622

My theory is that the cream of crowd sourced fan theories cucked his original intentions in coherence and systematic scope, and that this combined with non-linear 'gardening' production style confounds his already scatterbrained mind. Half-measures with the Joseph Cambell mythological archetypes opened a meme magick Pandora's Box of unintended resonances that he is now obliged to make whole, and it will be shit without vicariously deviating from that selfsame shitlib temptation to make everything muh Nazis/election allegory.

>>11868

>Basic linguistics should be a requirement for fictional settings. Like, what is the implication that people in Westeros have painfully modern but slightly archaic misspelled Anglo names?

Which is why I'd reccomend Sapowski before GRRM to normalfags 11 times out of 10.

>most faggots don't even understand how much work Tolkien put into crafting his world before he even starting writing

This, and despite the series certainly structured as a response to - or allegory of - Vietnam and the Cold War in general, he is unlikely to appreciate that conflict's relationship to Tolkien's participation in the FRATricidal European Civil War that necessitated it (Unless the Night's King pact with the Night's Watch and subsequent wee babby offerings represent Lend Lease supplies to the UK/USSR . . .) Cart-before-the-horse, Tarantino-in-literature pulp without it.

“I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.”

― Mark Twain

I don’t think I could ever sit down and read through all the books of GRRM – it just strikes me as an inflated, bloated pulp story that just lifts elements heavily from history (the War of the Roses in particular). Tolkien did pretty much the same thing, stealing names, ideas and concepts from myths and legends – most notably Norse Mythology.

There are countless, much shorter, books I’d spend my time reading instead of investing hours upon hours on GRRM’s lengthy pulp fantasy.

I like A Song of Ice and Fire I thought they were great books and really well written, not perfect no, but I enjoy his works a whole lot more than boring teen-fantasy bullshit like the Wheel of Time and the stuff Brandon Sanderson writes.

I used to get pissed off that the books were taking so long but now I don't care. He's created a really interesting world which my imagination can roam free in and also presents a lot of great ideas I don't see make it into fantasy very often at all. You should try read them without it all just being about getting to the end and finding out what happens. That hampered my enjoyment of the books significantly but it was my own fault, the TV shows present everything in a different way, kind of like a glorified soap-opera, but if you let the TV put to firm of an impression on you and try to take that same perspective into the books you've just ruined it for yourself.

They are the kind of things I read before I go to my bed or if I just want to get lost in a book. Some of the levels of seriousness I see people taking them just seems silly, you can put a lot of your own interpretation into the imagery and story and it works a lot better than the really forced "realistic" style of the show.

The show fuckin sucked ass in comparison to the books, some people in here actually preferring that whole chapters in the book are cut out for a 2 minute seen and seeing it as a good thing, I don't know why you even read books if you just want to know the advancement of the plot. I remember reading that part of GoT when Danaerys is roaming the dothraki sea and I thought it was one of the most beautiful and well written parts of the sereis, I had never read anything else like it.

The books will be finished when they are finished, losing your shit and going crazy because you can't see then end only goes to show how great the books are, if they were trash you wouldn't care, you become enflamed about the books because they had a profound effect over you, and that is ultimately the highest accolade any artist can recieve.

gurm is definitely a plot kind of writer.

and the books are not that great. but i really liked them back then and. i had a great time discussing them on /got/ on old /tv/.

but at this point, if the next book came out tomorrow, i don't know if i would pick it up.

>most of the great ideas are taken from other authors or history

I really disagree with that but maybe you could show me how I am wrong. What other books have you read which make A Song of Ice and Fire seem highly unoriginal and make you think its "mostly" just a collection of stolen ideas? The characters are written superbly and they all seem very alive, I wouldn't say that I am a big fantasy reader but I have read a lot in the genre and I don't really think there are any books which really have that same tone and throwout of typical cliches. I'd love to read more like it but like I said most of what I find comes across very much the same, the typical good vs evil archetypal story.

I do know my history and I think to so casually summarise what is presented in the text as stolen from history to be demeaning to both sides. It is not simply an allegory of historical events, far far from it, I don't understand people who just see historical commonalities, there are dragons and magic, the world is all different sizes, so much is in those books which have absolutley nothing to do with history. Sure a lot of is historical like the monarchy and feudal systems but so what? Is Dune unoriginal because it also takes elements out of history? Ah, I dunno, maybe you have just read a whole lot more fantasy than me or something but I really can't think of many books in the genre (though I think in general it is a variety of genre) that have this level of originality.

>>13273

I don't know what you mean, how is my imagination stunted because I like to explore this world in my mind? I like thinking about and picturing all the different places and what it would be like to live in this place. I prefer the North with characters like Bran and Hodor rather than the more political intrigue side going on down South but the East also really stimulated my imagination quite a bit and I find the whole world to be quite wonderful.

Can we not actually discuss literature productively instead of looking down on everything and making axiomatic points which do nothing but condescend and promote little conversation? I would like it is all….

>>13276

How can someone professed well in literature absolve themselves to such a disgusting temperment? I know this is 8ch but can you at least try to not sound like utter cancer? Isn't this were we can discuss books? Why bring all the petty name calling and pissing contests to feel some shallow sense of superiority when you could just try to get a long and maybe get some different insights.

several. but you wouldn't need that.

can we agree that most of the populations and religions are basically stuff that existed/exists or happened with some minor tweaks? stuff like the religion of seven is clearly the catholic church, the dothraki are basically one population of steppen riders or another, the ironborn are basically vikings, the drowned god is basically chtulhu, the bravos is basically venice populated by jew bankers who used to be killed in dragonfire ovens by nazi blonde valyrians or maybe it was real in their minds.

sparrows are basically this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraticelli

there was more, but i read the books some five years ago, i don't remember …

>Sure a lot of is historical like the monarchy and feudal systems but so what? Is Dune unoriginal because it also takes elements out of history

dune is set in a future where we mastered FTL travel, we had fought off skynet and world religions had gone through some very weird syncretism. it's the future, it's more about being plausible, albeit weird, rather than being "original".

btw i didn't mean to say that was a bad thing. it's almost impossible to make something that had never been made or creating something truly unheard of. not that it matters, like pretty much everything else the merits and the flaws of gurm's work is in the execution.

Not even Slytherin and Dumbledore's combined efforts can detract from the fact that Harry Potter is one of the dullest franchises in the history of movie franchises. Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the books were good though

"No!"

The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

The simple genius of Harry Potter is rather alike a child friendly version of Y/A novels and their film adaptations today: An ordinary child is taken from the mundane and shit reality of their life and told everything is different now, they are special.

"Yer a wizard arry."

It perhaps explains why there is such fixation today on relating all current events to Dumbledore's army, the Mockingjay or the Resistance. They are all united in the common theme of taking ordinary people and granting them unwarranted importance, placing them against villains who are simply - and clearly, villains, who can be destroyed without any crisis of moral conscience.

My name is GRRM, and I hate every single one of you. All of you are fat, retarded, no-lifes who spend every second of their day writing stupid ass words. You are everything bad in the world. Honestly, have any of you ever gotten any prizes? I mean, I guess it’s fun making fun of people because of your own insecurities, but you all take to a whole new level. This is even worse than watching my series.

Don’t be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I’m pretty much perfect. I won the laziness championship, and was runner-up at pretending to be busy. What do you pretend to do, other than “actually write things”? I also get straight 5 stars’s, and have a banging hot girlfriend (She was just found squatting in the grass; Shit was SO cash). You are all faggots who should just kill yourselves. Thanks for listening.

I hope he dies and when they go to his home to pick up and publish his remaining "Manuscripts" they find out he had written nothing since the tv show started out of laziness. I hope the same happens to Memeura so people realize sometimes you have to a cheap skate and shill out low quality chapters for a long running series if you want to finish it in time.

Pretty much every character in ASOIAF is fucking low quality, anon. If it wasn't for all the sex tacked on, nobody would've even cared about the books, let alone the show - it's for people who think they're too mature for orcs and elves all the while it's got the substance of an emo tween's diary entry hating his parents for telling him to mow the lawn. GOT is literally the most overrated show ever made, and any other writer would've used said overratedness to their advantage unlike GRRM, who's too busy whining about an irrelevant franchise like the NY Jets than actually, y'know, writing.
