Should it matter if someone suggests a funny book if it meets your other criteria? I can't think of a lot of serious stories that can be described as "randomly weird". All that comes to mind for me are satirical books by authors like Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett.

This should be Kafka on the Shore by Japanese author Haruki Murakami. It is not just a random book, I'd say. It's one of my favourites now. However, I came across with it indeed randomly, when I was working with https://letsgradeit.com/review-category/essay-writing/ guys. They mentioned this book in the bibliography to the writing assignment we worked on together. I decided to read it and it was the right decision. This book widens your imagination. It's really good!
