There's a minimum amount of users a community needs to have a self-sustaining population. Anything lower than that causes a feedback loop until the community dies. That being said, we're not dead, we're just really slow. Dead means nobody posts anymore.
I think many cuck/lit/ users are unhappy but they'll tolerate the shitposting because this board isn't anywhere near fast enough to attract them.

Imageboards were never big on non-visual arts at the start. As time went on other hobby related boards gained a bit of traction, but their potential high points were truncated through serious competition from up and coming non-imageboard sites. /lit/, here and elsewhere, has been an amusing place to waste some time. For people who are serious at all about the written arts the action is elsewhere. In all this, imageboards are following the trend of Newsgroups of old.
Back when I migrated from 4chan I was hoping 8chan /lit/ might become a beginners group for writing, and discussions of more popular literature. This never really panned out. After a slow and steady run, in late 2016 the board's activity nosedived for whatever reasons. The April hacking blowout didn't really effect us. If anything, we're slightly more active now than before.
One illustrative example of what is happening across the chanscape was the recent /mlpol/ launch. This resulted in a new site where active and creative people congregate, collaborate, and have fun. In the more distant past I've watched the same thing happen on other boards. /tg/ spawned quite a few new sites. /mlp/ gave rise to the freakish fluffy pony booru. There are many other examples.
If you are looking for where, for what is new and exciting and packed with scads of users, Discord groups are replacing imageboards. Very generally for all things imageboard related, especially so for literature. Other more formal sites do so too, but Discord is closest in look and feel to what chans once were.

As structure, the model for threads I'm interested in is seen in the /mu/ Soundcloud de facto sticky, and the Christmas reading thread. You have no or liberal time limit to see and participate. Discord might interest those who like vidya nights and streams, but not those interested in PBEMs or making retarded albums.

Things tend to move slow for the literature and books scene, from my experience. You do get the super reader crowd where people are reading a book every week and following their favorite authors and things tend to happen a lot faster on that level, but your average consumer will probably read more like a book a month, and that's relatively fast.
You can measure this by how often a book or a series takes the world by storm in the same way a Hollywood blockbuster might. If you go looking for Google trends and stuff, you'll usually find some movie title on the list most of the time, and every month or so there will be a song title that people just can't get out of their heads. With books those trends are much rarer. The most recent that I can recall (leaving aside books that people don't actually read but which get mentioned anyway because they generate controversy or something) was 50 Shades of Grey, and before that it was the Harry Potter series. The Martian might have peaked somewhere on that list as well, but from my perspective that was mostly among the really nerdy crowd, so that might not count.

For short stories and movies it seems to me more likely that someone would follow publications and festivals as much as authors. Because there are many of these, it should be no surprise that only rarely is a short better than all the others.

And I will never understand why. For a people traditionally tech-savvy and furiously security- and particularly privacy-conscious, this would seem an absurdly counter-intuitive move.
Aint discord the ones who basically own all the chats and datamining it for marketing companies? Now, not that hiroshimoot didn't already do this, but at least at this stage we don't know Jim's up to that. But I digress.

Or is it actual politics discussion instead of the enormous idiot echo-chamber that /pol/ has become? Or is it just cartoon horse porn for nazis?

>HAD NO IDEA … so, what … it's /pol/ for children?
It's more important as a means to demonstrate the current nature of imageboards, especially when taken together with similar events. Strange how it never settled on halfchan or 8Chan for a home base? I'll leave any further analysis of this for the latest board page entry, for later. If I can ever wring my notes together into a readable form.
As for the site itself, a fairly large proportion of the content creators have zero interest in /mlp/ or the animated series. It's not like the artistic style is hard to mimic. If your leanings are not redpilled NatSoc proper you're not gonna gain much traction there, not that it matters. They're in it for the stupidly laughtastic levels of fun with all else and especially source material or political tracts be damned.
Last I checked they were having an intersite raid war with /sp/. A rather robust burst of creative activity for some supposedly stupid April 1st one off, no?

>And I will never understand why. For a people traditionally tech-savvy and furiously security- and particularly privacy-conscious, this would seem an absurdly counter-intuitive move.
I see this mostly as a 4cuck move. People tried to shill Discord channels here and nobody appreciated it, and most boards banned them. For 4chan I understand why - trying to make a thoughtful post is a nightmare on that website. Shitposters abound, everything moves fast and gets pushed off the board within hours, and you'll probably catch a ban for the silliest of reasons anyway. Discord gives them the ability to quickly set up a community toward a single purpose or to foster a small community, and to achieve moderation self-determination. You also see a lot of current and former 4chan posters move to Twitter for the same reason; you can stay in your own circle and post in DM groups, or interface with the outside world, a world ripe for mockery.
This site is honestly the perfect answer to their problems. It is the imageboard format with self-determined moderation, customizability, and free hosting. You can get a couple friends together and make a small, unlisted circlejerk, or you can make a board with the goal of accommodating a large community. For some reason, however, it is scorned. I think it's their preconceptions fueled by website drama: "It's /pol/chan," "the leadership is untrustworthy," "I only go there to shitpost when I'm banned." All these problems are solved by just going to a competing website, but for some reason they stick to Discord instead.
>>13223
>Last I checked they were having an intersite raid war with /sp/. A rather robust burst of creative activity for some supposedly stupid April 1st one off, no?
More like a burst of butthurt. They got mad that /sp/ stole their GET, so they permabanned all GETball participants and blanketed /sp/ with cartoon horses and forced memes for about a week. Of course /sp/ is no stranger to bouts of spam, so nobody really cared and life went on.

Greetings /lit/ BO. /pdfs/ here. I see in the board list that this place has around the same amount of users as my board, and nobody discusses anything on my board. Even so I'd like a more varied userbase to come to /pdfs/ and share their favorite e-books, and I'm certain you would like more traffic to your own board.
So I propose you add /pdfs/ to your related board links and in return I'll add /lit/ to my links. What say you?
Also, you could try adding some board tags for this place. On the front page when I type literature into the tags search bar your board doesn't appear.

Thanks, I'll update /pdfs/ as soon as I can. Sometimes it takes a while for changes to go through, it's a strange thing. I've edited my links recently and it went through almost immediately. Before that though it took time for the system to even recognize I'd saved new links and then they took days to appear.
There's a thread here that might help

basically /pol/ dominates most of the traffic. too bad because there's a shit ton of other subboards worth delving into. my suspicion is that normalfags just heard about the chans and only heard about /pol/ and want their own echo chamber. on the contrary /leftypol/s mods are controlling little shits with no sense of humor. so I spend more time on other boards because I want deeper knowledge than those boards offer. unfortunately not everyone feels that way.

On what basis? Discord only attract turbo shitters, and while 4chin and this place may have been infested by normies in the last decade, the premise of the imageboards and their users were still very very different than Discord's

It depends on the nature one looks for in an imageboard, I suppose. All that I have found of excitement, creativity, entertainment, and activity defining /lit/ related doings is to be found among Discord groups. Couple that with more traditional websites, some professional, some not so much. All are out there to be taken advantage of and, to contribute to. So go forth and enjoy!
The best we can look forward to is this: >>14033
Such a method of expression is not generally a problem. /mlpol/ demonstrates plenty of fun to be had. However, past a certain point, casual drivebys of nothing but move all into the banal. Content creators—writers—inclined to roll with the Counter-Currents side of the market aren't found here. Neither yet the Pluto Press crew. Nor Baen, nor Tor, nor The Paris Review. All share in common one theme: they hate being bored. All are out there, care to guess where?
The situation is analogous in the visual arts, despite being more central to the point of imageboards. I won't revisit my observations of what artists once found worthwhile across the chanscape. They too have relocated to recapture what was.
If none of this is to your liking all I can say is I am an observer of trends, not a promoter of ends. I offer no other specifics.

I think it's a 4cuck thing caused by 4cuck problems. They're overcrowded and overstimulated. It's hard to have a nice conversation with the constant flow of shitposts and topics falling off the board, so some people look for sidechains to discuss niche topics or just slow the pace of conversation. Even scooping a slow board with a sieve would get you enough users to have a nice refuge. Despite a place like this being suited for just that purpose, they choose to use Discord for some reason. Probably years worth of FUD and hard feelings preventing them from coming here.

4/lit/ used to be slow but once the /pol/ and /leftypol/ faggots started showing up to ask for books to justify their ridiculous beliefs instead of to inform them the traffic boomed at the expense of quality. If we can up post traffic without resorting to spamming Jordan Peterson or Noam Chomsky or whatever we can grow beautifully.
