Do any of you have a way of ranking literature?

That is, do consider certain genres and styles of writing better than others?

Pic related is what I'd consider my ranking system, although it's very rough and still a work in progress. Feel free to edit it in ways you think are better and share your own personal rankings when you approach literature of any kind.

Nonfiction is a wide field. It encompasses Aristotle and Locke, but also your political commentator of the year writing on the shit-no-one-cares-about of the month.

It does, and the others are in a similar situation.

The more deeply rooted the knowledge a book breaks, the better it is. Nonfiction and science fiction most commonly give a new view of the world, at least at their best. Tragedy, romance talk about things no one understands, about how characters behave and such. Mystery, horror, comedy can go either way.

The others are far more narrow and uniform. Take sci-fi. Compare the two most polarizing works you can find with each other, and they'll still have more in common than a highschool textbook on economics and The Holocaust Industry.

If you allow for anything that's supposedly sf, there are books just as different.

I grouped genres intro two-three because at their best they don't get in the way, and at their worst they do. Any classification based on what happens in the book will have this problem. As nonfiction is good at informing and bad at amusing, while fiction is the opposite, I would group them the same way. Just like a book teaching cooking is seen as different to cookbooks, there is a difference between a mystery with incidental action and a thriller which happens to have a plot.

this pyramid is quite bad. most works usually fit several, not one, of the definitions distributed on the various levels.

just to make an example, do you know that epic poetry is one of our main sources when it comes to folklore/legends/mythology?

also like >>11920 said, rousseau is also non fiction, and it's the most pernicious worthless crap you'll ever find.

personally i rank my books between "it stuck on me like a tatoo" and "it left me nothing but disgust". and it's based on the actual book and not the supposed genre.

Ranking literature by genre isn't a good idea because almost all genres contain really great works and really bad ones. Not to mention there are a ton of books that don't neatly fit into any single genre.

No and I think this is nonsense, I judge books based on their quality. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are the same genre (medievalized fiction with wizards and primitive weapons) but it doesnt mean that medieval fiction is shit.
