If I suddenly got a billion dollars, I'd put most of it in the savings account and live off interest the rest of my life to do whatever. And what would be this "whatever"? I'd follow Alan Watts's "if money were no object" advice and first:

Get built a cozy cabin home not-too-deep innawoods under a mountain (distant enough to never ever see civilization but not so far I'm more than about 30-45m away from the big city by mountain bike) but still, somehow, (I could afford to make a way!!) get high-speed Internet and cellphone reception out there.

Second I'd hire people to come over every few weeks and clean and cook weeks of meals for me, along with whoever else I'd need to have on-call 24/7 like electricians, plumbers, doctors, and so on. And whatever else I'd need to have others do for my lazy ass.

Finally I'd begin living the dream of being a part-time artist (selling works online – someone else to hire: an art deliverer!), part-time bodybuilder, and part-time meditator/contemplator of Life-Universe-Everything spending hours chanting suttas while repeatedly bowing before a giant statue of Buddha, performing tea ceremonies and other semi-religious rituals for no other reason than they'd be fun in a gaming-on-hard-mode self-challenge in mental discipline kind of way, and such-and-so. I'd of course cross-pollinate these three activities like having video chats with Theravada monks, go out for a long jog around the nearby lake if I get hit by writer's/painter's block, and so forth. Maybe I can occasionally try new hobbies like gardening just because I have the time and energy between an hour in my home gym and another hour on my zazen pillow. (IME nothing clears the mind for meditation like kicking your own ass in the gym first!) And if I ever get bored of being mostly alone I'll hop on my mountain bike and hit up the local watering holes for a few days or weeks until I get sick of the noise pollution.

I'd feel terrible because I didn't earn it. I wouldn't even be happy if I suddenly got companionship because I'm rich now.

Also I'd feel terrible if I spent it all on myself. I think I'll get a small - medium sized house for myself and then do charity with the rest. That's the only way i won't feel like garbage

While 1'000'000'000$ would be alot on a personal level - and probably impossible to be spend sensible, it's not that much on a global scale. For example, you couldn't even give every person on this planet a single dollar, if you wanted to. But after having that much luck gainging so much money, I'd feel obligated to make the world a better place.

So I'd split my newly won fortune in roughly three parts.

The first part would be 5 - 10% of the money and be dedicated to my personal well-being, the pursuing of dreams, the construction of a safety-net in case of an occuring apocalypse and the same for the people around me i deeply care about.

This would mean building a house and underground bunker, but also visiting places and people i want to see and meet.

The next 20% would be spend directly into charity. I'm not sure yet what kind of charity I would support, but since its a fictional dream anyways, it is probably not as important.

The rest of the money would either invest, fund or build companies and start-ups which help to make the world a better place or generate money which will help to do so. I'd be careful to diversify my spending and not to invest all money into a single idea. I'd also try to make the firms i support as ethical as possible, but I'm well aware that an true ethical corp is not possible in an unethical world.

I'd put it towards researching a platform where people can communicate amicably online and fund a 2D mixed media project. I would also establish neo-monasteries for virgin men and computer wizzes and start a maid cafe.

First I'd I'd have the best doctors, dietitians, and personal trainers help me get my health in order. Once I become less slug-like and in pain, I'll travel the world via different modes of transportation (bicycles/trains/hiking/whatever) but would never have to sleep in a tent or eat out of a can if i didn't want to. This is sort of a low goalpost for $1b, but its really what I want right now.

Some generic advice

Savings accounts are really bad investments and they barely outpace inflation. You'll earn much more if you let a mutual fund invest your money. At the very least, invest in US treasury bonds.

You will never earn money by investing in precious metals, only slowly lose it. It's hedge against what you think will be a catastrophic market crash, not an income generating investment.

Once people find out you're rich (and it's only a matter of time, it's difficult to hide wealth even if you don't flaunt it) thousands of people will try to contact you begging you to invest in their charity or to pay for their sick family member's life-saving operation. Most of these will be scams.

What would I do?

I'd pay off my parent's house and give them a big annuity to do whatever they'd like. Same for my grandparents and cousins.

Hire a construction company to custom build me a nice home near the ocean. Buy up plots of land surrounding the home.

I collect firearms so I'd buy stuff I currently can't afford. I'd build my own range on the aforementioned land.

I practice archery as well so I'd dedicate more time into that.

I would support amateur artists I like by buying prints and paintings off them and commissioning artwork.

I think I would learn how to fly, I've always liked the idea of being an amateur pilot.

I'd give some to people who I owe for being there for me in the past. I'd get consultation on how best to do it. Most likely I'd set up trust funds for us. The trust for myself would be in case some clever person finds a way to steal my money. I'd buy some precious metals and land in case of a currency crisis.

I've lost so much faith in humanity I'd be hesitant to spend more on anything except myself, but the trust fund would be more than I'd need and there must be things I could find. Society likes to pretend certain kinds of people cannot be harmed or need help and it would be nice to do something for them, but likely the government and others would get in the way.

Well, apart from the usual "set myself up for life with all the time in the world for hobbies" and such, I'd go into political activism, helping to fund a Boer militia, investing in shit like open hardware, generally trying to unkike the world the Kaneo Takarada way. Would be breddy fun and hopefully more successful than Takarada himself.
