Anyone ever own one? I had several before and they were the nicest animals I had ever had.

Never owned one. Haven't had any pets since I was a kid. I love hanging out with others' pets when the opportunity arises though.

My sister has one that I also play with sometimes.
She named her Loki before when she didn't know if it was a boy or girl. We found out it was a girl when she brought her to play with her friend's boy rabbit. Loki gave birth to 4 bunnies after a few weeks. We couldn't keep then so we gave them away to friends and family.
Loki is full black and the boy rabbit was white with black spots. 2 of the bunnies were full black, one full grey, and one full brown.
I don't have a picture of Loki but I have one of the gray bunny. The bunny was a few weeks old in this picture.

Like a ball of fur, so cute.
Rabbits are the best, they even reproduce so fast that we'll always have rabbits. I want the world flooded with these wonderful hoppers.

I'm not sure about other rabbits but my sister's rabbit is very kind/
She lets us pet her and like when we pet her head.
If you stop petting her, she puts her head under your hand to pet her more. very cute

Why do animals respond positively to having their heads stroked?

Head pets are nice. Probably. I mean have you ever had your head pet comfortingly by someone you were fond of? Sounds nice in imagination-land.

I think once or twice, and it felt nice. It seems animals yearn for them however.

Well those are generally a domesticated variety right? Or if overall maybe they can sense a human's higher intellect and want to have their head touched as a submissive appeal to win you over as someone who'd help them against something that would out-think them.

I know cats better, so here's my answer: All types of felines use headbutts to show affection, mainly because this is how they get their scent all over things. So it doubles as a territorial marking. Some lame bullies use this as evidence that cats don't love you and only think of you as property. That's not true! They are just marking you as a friend for later, so they don't forget.
If you're on a kitty's good side, you can try to gently "fist-bump" their face. That is how you establish that you are bros.
Apart from that, being stroked and massaged simply feels good. This plebbit post I found explains it more scientifically.

To offset the cat post, here is a very interesting site I found detailing rabbit language. I had no idea they had such a distinct way of communicating. Here's some screencaps of a chapter that I found interesting: How bunnies show displeasure.
You can read the rest here: http://language.rabbitspeak.com/index/
Interestingly, kitties mean something entirely different if they lie down while showing you their back. In cat-speak, this is a gesture of trust. Meaning "I trust you not to attack," or even "I will keep watch in this direction, bro."

Thank you for this, that's really neat how cat's communicate with people. Amazing how animals can do these things trying to communicate their feelings.
