Hey, /fringe/. I've got a cool story to share. I recently had a surgery and was rendered unconscious via anesthesia. I've got a habit of waking up during surgeries, about half of them. I also practice lucid dreaming and astral projection from time to time. I gained awareness during the operation, which delighted me, but when I tried to open my eyes or speak, it was all gone. Nothing but darkness and my awareness or conscious mind. I imagined it to be like sleep paralysis or what it might be like to be in a coma. I was trapped inside my own body. I wasn't scared by it, but delighted that I had accomplished awareness detached from my mortal body. I didn't have time to attempt any projection for an out-of-body experience, but I think I could have if I'd had more time to make an attempt. Unfortunately, my brief state of awareness only lasted for about 40 seconds and I spent it, in futility, trying to get my body to function. Perhaps the anesthesiologist attending the surgery noticed changes in my vital signs and turned up the juice on me before I could wake up. I asked him about it when he came to visit me in the recovery room and he said he thought I'd wake up, so he dosed me heavier. And he noted, once I turned it off, you was awake again in 0-60. One of the fastest I've seen in a patient! Maybe that was just his bedside manner, but I felt good hearing it.

My question is, does /fringe/ think that it's possible that the study of astral projection and lucid dreaming may help someone combat sleep paralysis, or God forbid, one of us ever ends up in a coma? Could these skills help a person "pull out of it" if they were comatose? Likewise, could studying sleep paralysis and it's known treatments help a person in their abilities to lucid dream or project? Any related resources are always appreciated.

I semi-regularly experience a state like this and I've rarely seen it mentioned anywhere. People always confuse it with sleep paralysis when I've brought it up, but it's not quite that. It happens to me during sleep, right as a dream ends I will gain awareness and end up in this pseudo-paralysis black void. Occasionally I will manage to somehow get out of my body and have a brief astral projection type of experience, sometimes I'm stuck and I just have to wait it out. It's not a particularly pleasant state, and it always leaves me feeling tired.

This started happening to me when I was a teenager and it's kept up ever since, usually it's nothing for a couple months and then it happens three times in a row for example; never quite knew what to make of it.

Possibly. Are you familiar with Gurdjieff? He got into massive car accident which put him into a coma. The doctor didn’t think he would survive let alone wake up from the coma, but he managed to pull himself out of it by sheer will and consciousness. Best documentary on Gurdjieff is called “I am Gurdjieff, I will not die”, but it’s hard to find with English subs. I think I got it from pirate bay once

>black void

This is the perfect description for what I experienced. It was a state of nothingness, yet free thought. No feeling. No body. No sight. No sound. No body. No place. Nothing. Only my thoughts.

>he was a magician, astrologer, prophet, healer, and teacher

Sounds like this man was a /fringe/ wizard if there ever was one. He'd fit right in.

>"A man can nurture a soul so strong that it survives the death of his physical body. A man can become immortal if he wants to."

That statement captures the essence of what I wanted from starting this thread. In my momentary experience in the "black void," I was a soul and nothing more.

Also interesting is the brief mention of Nazi magicians studying in Tibet and Thule. Also his knowing Stalin, that Joseph wanted to control people, asking him about astrology and the powers of /hypno/. "Hitler and Stalin were both magicians seeking power over people." When two of the greatest military forces in the world employ magicians, there must be something to all of this stuff. It makes me wonder if the "third power" not mentioned happened to be the USA?

Fascinating man and story, anon. Thanks for sharing! I might look into reading some of his books.

I was super scared to have surgery done to remote my dental teeth because they all claimed I would be unconscious and blah blah and I had the most deep fear imaginable thinking it would kill me and that my body would wake up with a duplicate personality.

I was fully aware under anesthesia and in a lucid state. I had the sensation I could easily wake up my body if I wanted to and I was aware they were operating on me so I decided not to.

Those bastards lied to me. There was no "skipping forward through time" or anything like that. Also when they were done with the surgery they treated me as I was in a stupor when I was just plainly fully aware. They didn't expect me to remember anything I remembered all of it.

I try to challenge and destroy this belief I have that people are NPCs but all my attempts fail. I am very sure that most people on this planet have an animal level of conscious and not truly sentient as in "aware that they exist".

Cool. I knew I was under anesthesia as well and I knew they were operating on me too. Unlike you, I found I couldn't wake up. My thoughts were completely disconnected from my body. Truly a black void. This may be due to different drugs and doses. Is that the only surgery you've ever had or have you had others since?

>people are NPCs

>most people on this planet have an animal level of conscious and not truly sentient as in "aware that they exist".

Gurdjieff mentions something similar to this in the video, saying some people only live a "machine" existence. That the soul must be cultivated to ascend above the machine level to realize immortality. It reminds me of the Bible verses that talk about being lost in eternal darkness. This "black void" that I was in would indeed be a plane of eternal darkness unless I was able to find my way out. Maybe he alludes to Heaven is achievable, but only if your soul has the will to get there.

I wonder if many of the NDE's (near death experiences) are accidental or unintentional astral projections as peoples' souls begin to separate from their mortal bodies. If a person could achieve that level of control, they could possibly bring themselves back from the verge of death, as Gurdjieff did.

I used to love reading the stories on https://www.nderf.org/ back in the old days. I'm happy to see it's still up and running. I might go read some new stories if I get bored. It's reassuring to find similarities and patterns in the different experiences.

In Hinduism, elightenment/liberation (moksha) is considered very similar to dreamless sleep.

>I might look into reading some of his books.

You should read Ouspensky's book about him called "In Search of the Miraculous". Gurdjieff himself recommended it to pupils who wanted to join his "Work" as he called it. It's a good book

Interesting analysis. So, is it possible that, through a combination of my lucid dreaming and astral projection skills and taking an IV dosed sedative cocktail, I was able to cross turiya into shunya or moksha? I remember thinking to myself, "I think therefore I am." I existed purely as thought in that void. That said, now that I've been to this place, upon death, perhaps I can leave samsara? It was a very exciting experience, looking back on it, although too brief. At least I can look forward to returning to a state of moksha in my physical death and as Gurdjieff said, "if the soul has the will" I can attain a oneness with God/Brahman? I don't believe that I died during the surgery, but I think that my self/soul had the will to break through the turiya to find shunya. That my belief is stronger than a mere belief, but as factual knowledge that I exist. I am aware. Anesthesia is a small hurdle compared to physically dying, but it's probably the closest a person can get to a NDE without actual death. All in all, I'm pleased with my experience and want to learn more. I will definitely check out your book recommendation. I just downloaded a pdf of it. Thank you.

The state most people are in most of the time is quite literally asleep. Like in a dream, most of them are unable to retrace everything they did or things they talked about back to the moment they woke up in the morning.

They are asleep while they dream, while they live, and while they die. Some might spend dozens of reincarnations in between lucid moments.
