A great crowd of men, women and children, all running to the synagogue. “What’s up?” he cried, sticking his head out of the window. “What a question! Why, don’t you know?” they answered. “Right in front of the synagogue there is a sea monster. It’s a creature with five legs, three eyes and a beard like a goat, only it’s green!”

And as the crowd hurried by, Reb Feivel suddenly noticed that the Rabbi himself was among them.

“Lord of the world!” “If the Rabbi himself is running with them surely there must be something happening. Where there is smoke, there is fire!

Without further thought Reb Feivel grabbed his hat, left his house and began running. “Who can tell?” he muttered to himself as he ran, all out of breath toward the synagogue.

With its closest approach to planet Earth scheduled for November 14, this Comet ATLAS (C/2020 M3) was discovered just this summer, another comet found by the NASA funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System. It won’t get as bright as Comet NEOWISE but it can still be spotted using binoculars, as it currently sweeps through the familiar constellation of Orion. This telephoto field from November 8, blends exposures registered on the comet with exposures registered on Orion’s stars. It creates an effectively deep skyview that shows colors and details you can’t quite see though, even in binoculars. The comet’s telltale greenish coma is toward the upper left, above Orion’s three belt stars lined-up across the frame below center. You’ll also probably spot the Orion Nebula, and famous Horsehead Nebula in the stunning field of view. Of course one of Orion’s belt stars is nearly 2,000 light-years away. On November 14, this comet ATLAS will fly a mere 2.9 light-minutes from Earth.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is warning against threats to religious liberty and freedom of speech amid the coronavirus pandemic, saying it has resulted in “previously unimaginable” restrictions on Americans.

Alito, 70, said during a virtual keynote speech Thursday to the conservative Federalist Society that he didn’t intend to downplay the “severity of the virus’ threat” to public health, but called out what he sees as government overreach in the ongoing fight against COVID-19.

“The pandemic has resulted in previously unimaginable restrictions on personal liberty,” the George W. Bush appointee told the conference, cautioning others not to misinterpret his words. “We have never before seen restrictions as severe, extensive and prolonged as those experienced for most of 2020.”

Alito added: “Whatever one may think about COVID restrictions, we surely don’t want them to become a recurring feature after the pandemic has passed.”

The conservative justice also claimed “tolerance for opposing views is now in short supply,” saying that many recent law school graduates are chastised, harassed or face retaliation for views not aligned with “law school orthodoxy.”

“In certain quarters, religious liberty has fast become a disfavored right,” Alito said. “For many today, religious liberty is not a cherished freedom. It’s often just an excuse for bigotry and it can’t be tolerated even when there’s no evidence that anybody has been harmed.”

Alito even suggested that Christians face criticism regarding their religious beliefs similar to the restrictions the US placed on Germany and Japan following World War II.

“Is our country going to follow that course?” Alito said. “ … The question we face is whether our society will be inclusive enough to tolerate people with unpopular religious beliefs.”

Been reading, writing and consuming media from many perspectives lately. Dropping some thoughts here…

Some want to make everything about persona, painting all others who differ in their viewpoints in a negative light. Tearing down personas, after all, is ever so much easier than having a civil discourse about policy.

Some want to make everything about attacking the personas of others, but only end up destroying the credibility of their own persona; mischaracterizing and lying to the point where absolutely nothing they say is taken seriously anymore. Examples would be personas like Adam Schiff, Andrew Cuomo and Johnny Neptune. That most of the poser facade-worshipers in Hollywood and lamestream media would take that same tack does not surprise me.

Some want to make everything about politics, and they're not even very politic about it! That some would seek to sow division and hatred, even using violent mobs of conformity-enforcers to gain the power to control others does not surprise me. Neither does the fact that there are very few who focus on practicing self-control, but MANY who would seek to enact overt enforced control on others.

History is replete with examples of revolution in thought and deed, changes in the societal current of the time; yet history repeats itself in so many ways… ways in which we may learn… or not…

Oftentimes, however, taking the stance of being anti-anything is a sure-fire way of becoming the very thing which we hate, so it may behoove us to delve deeper into the pages of history now and then.
