I watched his essays on Fort Apache and The Big Sky. He's noticeably better talking about Ford. He says Fort Apache stands against the formalities of military conduct. While that's true with Henry Fonda's character, the film itself seems to conclude on a different note. It's hard for me to see Gallagher's thesis in John Wayne's closing monologue that heaps praise on the armed forces.
I have to say this Tag Gallagher fellow is a sloppy speaker and a sloppy editor. It's funny that he made a lot of film essays when he's not very good at the two main production aspects.

<Explore the narrative elements of an all-time classic genre: the Western. What exactly is a Western? Who were the key directors and stars? And is the Western dead? Dave Kehr takes a close look at films like "Stagecoach" and "Once Upon A Time In the West," and filmmakers John Ford, Sergio Leone, and Clint Eastwood.

<The term "B" movie has come to mean low-budget films, but originally it meant something very specific in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Although the films were never designed to break the box office or win Oscars, there are many enjoyable and stylistically sophisticated filmmaking techniques to reclaim from this era. Ahead of the Academy Awards this Sunday, MoMA Film Curator Dave Kehr explores the films of the Republic Pictures Library, recently restored by Martin Scorsese and Paramount.

<This audiovisual essay proposes an understanding of cinema as a transformative device able to affect a series of re-signifying operations, involving political and historical re-examination as well as shifts in the subjective experience of time-space.
<The essay is focused on the transformation that takes place in the viewer’s perception of a specific kind of cinematic entity: filmed void spaces, and how they may turn out to be read as places of memory.
<Cinema has the possibility of qualifying spaces, materializing information and connotations that, at first sight, seem invisible. This potentiality of cinema unveils the paradoxical complexity of filmed void spaces: something simultaneously is and is no longer there.
