Hello! I'm not exactly certain how alive this board is, but hopefully you can help. I'm looking for depressing films. Some films I think might be considered depressing (or in some way dealing with depression)that I enjoyed: The seventh continent, wild strawberries, taxi driver, eraserhead, and The Seventh Seal.
If any of you guys could recommend something to me, I would be very grateful. Thank you!

Angst is pretty bleak. You'll notice stylistic similarities to Gaspar Noe movies.
If you have a choice, I think the original ~78 minute cut is the best. Some versions have an unnecessary prologue which was inserted to pad the running time.

Along the lines of your attached image, watch texhnolyze. It is by far the most depressing thing I have ever seen.

Not anymore, I've exclusively used this chan for a over a year, and I barely even come here, now. I forgot I made this thread, even. Thanks for the recommendations, though.

I have not heard of Gaspar Noe, but I thank you, anyway. I'm a novice when it comes to film,I woefully admit.

Thank you, I believe I have heard of that!

Are Bela Tarr's other works as good as well? I'm aware of Satantango, but that's seven hours or so long.

Here's a good one from Turkey with an interesting production story
Certain aspects reminded me of Costa Gavras' Missing - incidentally both films were at Cannes in 1982

Watch other Haneke films, they are extremely bleak and depressing. I've only seen Funny Games and Cache but they both rank highly for me. His films posses such a tense and engaging atmosphere. Will watch The Seventh Continent soon. Although it's anime Perfect Blue is quite tragic.

This and maybe scenes from a marriage stand out for me.
Unlike literature it's usually rare for film to sadden me unless it is graphic and unrelentless like say come and see.

OK this isn't hopelessly depressing but it's pretty sad
Glen Campbell died a few days ago so now is a good time to watch this documentary about the later years of his life. I didn't know much about him going into it.

I'd say the approach of this film is more optimistic about humanity, not full-on misanthropic, but yeah the imagery alone is pretty bleak.
