Am I the only one who thinks this stupid motherfucker doesn't understand any of the shit that he watches? Like, he makes some valid points once in a while but usually he's just such a fucking jackoff holy shit

if I am anything to go by, you are indeed the only one. Perhaps it's just how my taste generally corellates with his, and I can absolutely agree with you in some ways that he's a bit self contented for someone who clearly has little knowledge of the classics but his general view seems pretty valid and well argued.

I think he's just gotten into cinema not -too- long ago. He really isn't that bad. He's just hating on a lot of movies because that's how you make money on youtube. By being a critic that dissect movies you are critical of. Just stick to RLM. They aren't perfect either but they certainly know more about cinema then he does.

I think to some degree he does but he is way too picky. I don't think he understands all of cinema and understands the art house side. People like Mike and Jay from RLM truly understand film because unlike YMS they've made music. YMS makes music, if he understands music why the fuck doesn't he just make videos about music then? If doesn't get the whole picture why make videos?!

Not to make you any more angry but you know he has implied that he wants to make movies in the future. Now putting his ability to critique movies aside that's a horrible idea. Even Nostalgia critic tried to do that as far as I know. Ebert too. I do not understand why critics believe talking and thinking about movies makes one able to make them.

Very true. Which is why I don't even know the details of his efforts towards film making. Even if he did though I think the most important skills to have as a film maker do not come from watching movies.

He watches absolute moronic garbage multiple times and says Haneke is his favorite director and The Holy Mountain his favorite film.

It sounds like he hasn't even heard of Tarkovsky or Tarr…and these are entry level in the scale of patrician-hood.

I find it hard to say RLM understands 'film'…they know how making a formulaic movie works, but a FUCK TRUFFAUT skit a patrician does not make.

Is this guy internet famous or something?
I think I remember watching his "review" of Turin Horse a some time ago where he essentially repeated "I got what the movie was about." over and over, are all of his videos like this?

kind of, he can come across as pretty pretentious and to a significant extent he is, but, despite not having that much knowledge of cinema history he seems to be able to formulate pretty good arguments, at least that's what I think of him, but I really do understand just thinking of him as a pretentious dick who doesn't know shit.

i don't think he is to pretentious. just more so than the average movie goer. I think most of his reviews are made to help the average movie goer get into "higher cinema" and help explain to them why certain blockbusters are bad with evidence, not just opinion.

I like his videos. His recommendation are nice.

He nitpicks too much to pad out his reviews. That part in his Toy Story 3 review where he points out that the metal golf club couldn't hold Woody and Buzz isn't even a flaw to anyone but autists who don't get film.

i find his videos near unwatchable for a few reasons. he takes 30 minutes to say what could very easily be condensed into a 10 minute review. he repeats himself too often and constantly says how what he is saying is only an opinion blah blah. i get that he does it to attempt to prevent abuse in the youtube comment section but after a few videos of hearing it i've gotten the point and have gotten sick of it.

too nitpicky.

the other reason is that stupid face he uses as a display picture/edits into his videos.

i still watch his videos occasionally as a means of finding movies to watch.

And don't forget Ascot Man.

But yt critics are probably a different story. I just don't get the appeal.

His review of Only God Forgives turned me off to him. He's way too impatient and it seems that he judges things way too harshly on just the surface; Film is a complex medium that functions on several levels, but it seems that he only sees a few of them.
Also, looking at his IMDb, he gives way too fucking many movies 10/10 ratings. I've been watching films for 13 years and I've only ever seen two that I could consider 10/10.

It pisses me the fuck off that Nostalgia Critic thinks that some films don't warrant having experimental cinematography. He probably doesn't even know that cinematographers are a thing, and just assumes the director does it.

At least YMS doesn't advertise himself as like an expert or something.

This is probably more to do with your rating systems not lining up than anything else. I consider a 5 to an okay movie. It falls on just to the left side of the middle. For me that means it's average but on but slightly under. I've seen plenty of people make my 5 point a 7 on their scales.>>3218

He is a human. Humans are inherently flawed and there is no perfect opinion, only tumblr thinks it can be 100% correct and flawless. Any critic offers an opinion and the very nature of opinion means flaws and bias will come into play as we have separate tastes and different ways of viewing a film.
