No.5760 [View All]
So I'm in this fb group that posts film stills and the lets people guess what it's from. I thought this would be a fun thing to start on this board.
Rules:
- Film stills in this situation are excerpts DIRECTLY from the movie. No production stills, no behind the scenes footage, NO CROPPING (ratio is important) and no posters or similar material.
- GIFs are encouraged, OC GIFs even more.
- Please post films only. No series, music videos or youtube stuffs.
- Of course you can google but that takes the fun out of it so please don't.
- Hints can be given in any form. Extra stills, music, release date etc.
- Please try to wait with posting a new still until the previous one is guessed. Let's do one at a time to keep it organised.
- When you post a still, keep track of it and let us know when it had been guessed. I suggest we post imdb links along with the 'you guessed right!' post so it is easy to find out wether a still has been guessed right or not.
- Please link correctly and add 'Hint' to your post when you post a hint.
Tips:
1. Make your own stills in VLC or anything similar, they have a direct screenshot option in VLC so you don't have to printsceen your movies, printscreening results in worse quality most of the time. This also prevents reverse image searching and stuff.
2. It's a lot of fun to post well known movies with unrecognizable stills.
3. Watch out for filenames!
I guess that's it. I suggest harder stills than the one I'm posting now but let's start off easy.

okay I wasn't sure if the images came from different sources or it was one film with many different styles. the bighugelabs mosaic reminds me of old/tv/
> finish film by an armenian director
damn you went pretty obscure. how about this?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0176246/

both right! very good
i'll give some hints
from left to right, top row to bottom
czech new wave avant garde film about mental illness , 1969
soviet union experimental, 1962
venezuelan experimental doc, not on imdb, 1969
experimental short by somewhat famous avant garde canadian director, not on imdb also, 1974
that's top row, i'll drop more hints tomorrow i guess
i only go on /tv/ for bighugelabs threads, some good people in there

I can only guess since I don't recognize them
Venezuela - Basta by Ugo Ulive
Canada - Strange Codes by Arthur Lipsett
> i only go on /tv/ for bighugelabs threads, some good people in there
yeah those threads used to be fun. Actually it seems like I've seen some of these images before
since you're posing a lot of unusual films, I'm curious how you progressed to watching rarities and experimental stuff?

right again on both, i'm happy
i got into non narrative and experimental films because they exploit visuals more, and leave the other stuff (dialogue, characters, storytelling) which to me is expendable, not everyone agrees with this of course
but i'm not exclusive to non linear, non narrative films
the chart i posted is my 4x4 my 16 favorite movies
you got 2 right so i'll drop some hints on 2nd row
film from soviet georgia, 1968
czech film, narrative and politically oriented, 1978 director was very important for the czech new wave
you already got The Path Towards Uninterested Love right
and last one from that row (girl with the snake)
golden age mexican film, comedy mixed with drama, stars one of the most prolific actors on my country, 1948 the scene on the still is probably the most famous scene from the movie
btw the ones you didn't get were
322 (Dusan Hanak, probably my fav director)
and Alaverdoba (Shengelaia, soviet georgia director, you might have heard of "Pirosmani" by him)

okay, the next row is
The Plea by Tengiz Abuladze (excellent director)
possibly... Vlacil's Shadows of a Hot Summer (I really like him too)
and Los tres huastecos (I'm sure I've seen that image before)
I like that you gravitate toward central European and Soviet countries

fucking based, man
how can i reach your level?
anyways i'll continue with row 3
another czech film, 1969, topic is passing of a love one and death in general
1986 spanish film about the death of theatre over film and mental delusion, quite well known cast
probably my favorite film from 1990 to 2016, this film deals with suicide, 1995 japanese film by a well known director today
ok this is probably the most obscure one on my chart, film topic is insects and mental illness/isolation
from 1987, the director is german but i'm not sure where the film was made, not much info of it online, no dialogue used, not on imdb

RR by James Benning.
I'm stoked that I got this, I've never seen it but was able to guess based on the screenshots looking like other Benning films, especially 13 Lakes. I guess he does have a pretty noticeable style despite his films seemingly being pretty plain

I really like the composition of a person walking the horizon line to a vanishing point, counterbalanced by an incoming car traveling underneath on a lower plane.

Ah, it's Youth of the Beast. I imagine the Seijun Suzuki retrospective is playing in your city as well? I just watched Smashing the O Line and Kanto Wanderer tonight, I liked the former more, although neither of them really blew me away. Youth of the Beast is playing tomorrow night, what did you think of it?
