Does anybody here have an interest in screenwriting? Or experience selling their script(s)?

I'm thinking of banging out 3 or 4 ideas I've had bouncing around my head, but considering that I'm an American (not film) student living in Europe with no funds for a trip to LA–how fucked am I?

How much writing have you done? I'd say go for it even if you aren't sure what to do with the finished product. Good writing takes practice.

If your school has a film dept it couldn't hurt to get to know some of the students. Some of them may need help with their projects.

Beyond that obvious advice I'm not much help.

"bang" out a ten page short. If you describe a camera angle or technical aspect outside of the action and dialog, into the trash it goes.

Go download celtx (its free) and read some screenwriting books.

Come back in a few months and let us know how your writings going.

Are you going to Uni in Europe?

I've been moonlighting as a freelance writer for the last couple of years, so I'm pretty confident in my writing/ideas. I am well aware, however, that screenplays are a completely different beast than articles and short stories.

Yes, I'm going to university in Poland for a STEM based field.

And thanks for the celtx tip, it's very useful!

Thank you both for your advice, I'll put off worrying about selling my scripts until later down the road. I'll definitely go for it and come back when I've got some writing in.

You do realize that selling an original script is extremely difficult, right?

Yes, I do.

You can't get anyone to look at your script unless you're part of the Union. You can't be part of the Union unless you're working. You figure out the Catch-22 here.

I swear it's a protection racket.

Best move would be to re-draft your story as a novelization and publish that. You don't need anyone's permission for that, and if it catches on and Hollywood comes calling, then you can hit them with the script.
