What does /film/ think of Rotten Tomatoes and imbd scores?

I use imdb all the time to gauge what I watch. I don't take the ratings as gospel but it's nice to have some point of reference.

People criticize imdb but that's probably because they see inflated ratings for all the new/popular movies. The other side of that is movies with under 50 votes can have inaccurate ratings too. But I think their ratings are about as good as it gets given the scope of films covered.

RT is good for finding reviews. They have a much smaller catalog than imdb of course. I don't keep track of new releases so I rarely visit the site.

don't even look really. sometimes after I've watched a film I'll look at the imdb page and read some reviews, helps me to arrange my own thoughts about the film, but I never look at what something is rated beforehand or care at any point. sometimes if I get a director recommended I'll go onto rateyourmusic page for that movie and pick one of the 'bolded' movies to start off, but that's the only time I look at ratings. I like to go into a film with no expectations. don't think I've ever been on rottentomatoes

also,

>shawshank redemption best movie of all time

how can that even happen

Internet ratings are a waste of time. They're grassroot viral campaigns funded by the studios to upvote their projects, give 10/10 or 5 star scores, and argue with dissenting opinion.

The only decent review you can find are the initial responses from critics on RT or movie critic blogs.

Other than that, the majority of the scores have been bought and paid for.

Rotten Tomatoes is absolute garbage-tier bullshit. The farthest thing from a reliable source of film criticism. The so-called "critics" that align with the site are spineless shill whores who serve as nothing more than mouthpieces of whatever studio pays them to say in regards to one film or another. This cancerous site is destroying the art of film criticism and damaging the reputation of legitimate cinematic artists. These pigfuckers gave Ghostbusters 2016 a GODDAMN 75%, for fuck's sake.

Man of Steel is the best Superman film to date. Batman v Superman was a transcendent masterpiece that's AT LEAST on-par with The Dark Knight. Suicide Squad was generally okay, with its greatest strengths being its grounded and realistic action and darker style of comedy, its genuine faithfulness to the source material, and the absolutely solid character focus throughout the entire film. Oh, and the soundtrack was very unique, a nice blend of classic rock and contemporary urban beats that perfectly illustrate each character it's focusing on.

Civil War is an insufferable dumpster fire, almost as bad as Iron Man 3. Honestly, the MCU only has four actually good movies in its lineup so far, and those are as follows: The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Doctor Strange. The rest of their films range from a few okay films, most mediocre films, and a handful of straight-up godawful films.

The DCEU has a far better track record than the MCU in terms of REAL criticism, and absolutely kicks its ass in terms of financial success.

Point being, Rotten Tomatoes is a bullshit website that really ought to be shut down, with its anti-DC bias being only one of its many, many, MANY egregious sins.

An ancient bumper

IMDB like >>5462 very well said, is a gauge to know what range a movie is standing on

And while scores can be very distorted in new releases (from 2005 to date) the older ones in a range of 500 to 20k votes are most of the time fair (5 mediocre, 6 ok, 7 good). Except comedies, as those are hard to review due to the very subjective taste varying between a lot of users

Still i just look at the score only as a side action, main motive of IMDB for a lot of folks is to make lists based on directors/actors, a backlog guide or so to say. Some of them might be complete waste (2 to 4 out of 10) even when the plot might be interesting, so it can save us plenty of distasteful hours

Rotten Tomatoes has a different point, although IMDB also suffers from it, RT goes on to catch a trend that focus on Ebert-esque factors aka "worth the money tbh fam", "it was fun, simple as that", "i can understand it, therefore it's good cinema/i got confused half way, smh movie sucks"

And that is only good if you are in a hurry and want to know if the movie you were dragged to is going to be passable or hell

IMDB just got a LOT shittier! They are shutting down their forums. I think that includes message boards included on each film/actor page.

http://www.imdb.com/board/announcement

>IMDb is the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb's message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb's message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

>Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb's social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb's editors and one another. IMDb's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

>Because IMDb's message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they'd like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

>IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

IF its like Rate your music, it sucks.

At rate your music, there is an extreme amount of users that dont rate what they rate, not only that but they complain about those that do.

If the site was a rate your president site, hittler would be considered the best president, because the neonazies would rate hittler with 4.5/5 or 5/5, while the ones that hate hittler, would not rate it.

I just saw this article about how users are to blame for the problems with these sites

Hollywood Is Losing the Battle Against Online Trolls

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hollywood-is-losing-battle-online-trolls-992582

>While the attack against The Promise is an extreme case, colored by decades of fraught discussion over the Armenian genocide, it highlights a growing problem in Hollywood. A search of 4chan reveals multiple campaigns against everything from Star Wars spinoff Rogue One to indie Holocaust-denier drama Denial to Justin Simien’s upcoming Netflix series Dear White People, many with step-by-step instructions on how to negatively impact films on sites like IMDb and YouTube. Once just a curiosity — for years, Korean fans made an annual ritual of vaulting K-Pop idol Rain to the top of the Time 100 Poll — online trolls now are a movie marketer's worst nightmare.

>In 2016, the all-female reboot of Ghostbusters became a magnet for a downvoting campaign from 4chan and Reddit users. They organized to give hundreds of thousands of "thumbs down" to the film's YouTube marketing materials — its first official trailer, the video of its theme song, even a clip of the cast on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Sony began releasing the film's trailers on Facebook, which has no "dislike" button, but by then the trolls had taken hold of the narrative. It's impossible to say whether they made an impact on the box office, but in the end, Ghostbusters lost an estimated $70 million.

pretty much the truth

IMDB, on the other hand, owns Amazon and think about it.. Who would go there and write a review for jews to get more data etc.?

Btw I don't know where is IMDB advertised or if it is, but since it's Amazaon service, my guess is that most of faggots on IMDB buy there and Amazon is nothing close to be specialized. And since it's a big service and appears in every search engine right on top, possibility of quality ratings is zero.

Do you guys know about Critics Round Up? It's small but it aims for better information than the large sites

https://criticsroundup.com/

< Critics Round Up (CRU) is the first movie review aggregator to select reviews based on writing quality instead of popularity. Website traffic rankings play a major part in what gets selected for inclusion on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. These metrics don’t factor into whether a site gets included here.

< Just because CRU cares most about writing quality doesn’t mean that we will comprehensively cover all well-written reviews. The internet is large and constantly expanding. It would be impossible to cover everything of merit. But unlike Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, we won’t drop the ball on providing you the essentials from hardcore cinephilia. The aforementioned aggregators don’t cover MUBI’s Notebook, Cinema Scope or La Furia Umana. This site includes all those publications, in addition to many others not on the radars of the more populist aggregators.

What does /film/ think of Letterboxd? I started using it just to keep a track of which films I was watching so I could more accurately determine what I enjoyed most in a year. The average ratings on films seem pretty reasonable. My biggest problem seems to be that the written reviews are only ever rarely quality, and most of the time seems to be a warped leftist mouthfart.
