Hey /film/, KG's MoM is Hungarian film, I have only seen a couple films by Jancso and Tarr so I don't really know what's good when it comes to Hungary. Any recs for Hungarian films?

I've seen a dozen or so and enjoyed all of them. There was some Hungarian film chart on 4chan but it was something like 16 films from only 3-4 directors.
A couple of other notable directors are György Pálfi (who seems to be very versatile) and Zoltán Fábri.
Also worth a look is the visual poetry of Szindbad and banned satire The Witness.

I was pretty impressed with Angyali üdvözlet a.k.a. The Annunciation from the same director. The film uses meticulously-costumed child actors in an adaptation of a popular Hungarian dramatic poem called "The Tragedy of Man". It's often dense and disorienting on the first viewing, but it should definitely be mentioned in this thread. You'll probably like it if you're into unusual films.

I'd like to watch Radetsky March but there are no English subtitles.
>This posthumously released, last work directed by Axel Corti (1933–1993) deals with a major chapter of central European history. Joseph Roth’s novel “Radetzkymarsch“ depicts the decline and fall of the Habsburg Empire from the viewpoint of a faithfully monarchistic aristocratic family.

I can cover some of the highlights, at least for the Austrian side of things. Glamorous "Vienna films" were popular for a while in Austria and the surrounding countries. Masquerade is supposed to be one of the best
http://hawkmenblues.blogspot.com/2016/04/maskerade-willi-forst-1934.html
Max Ophuls tended to work from similar vein. Letter from an Unknown woman takes place in Vienna (albeit a Hollywood version of it). Ophuls directed two other films adapted from Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler - Liebelei and La Ronde. La Ronde was moved to France for the film.
Sissi was a popular film trilogy about Princess Elizabeth of Austria, starring a young Romy Schneider.
The story of Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf and Baroness Maria Vetsera has been adapted several times:
* Rolf Raffé - Das Schicksal derer von Habsburg (1928) with Leni Riefenstahl
* Anatole Litvak - Mayerling (1936) with Charles Boyer and Danielle Darrieux
* Max Ophuls - De Mayerling à Sarajevo (1940)
* Jean Delannoy - Le Secret de Mayerling (1949)
* Rudolf Juger - Mayerling (1956)
* Kirk Browning - Mayerling (1957) TV movie with Audrey Hepburn
* Terence Young - Mayerling (1968) with Omar Sharif, Catherine Deneuve, James Mason and Ava Gardner
Visconti's Senso takes place during the Austrian occupation of Venice.

Check out Bela Tarr's cohort György Fehér. YOu can find 2 of his movies on the web. I think Szürkület (1990) is one of the best films that has no dvd release.

I have seen it. It is not as adventurous or surreal as her 20th century films. Instead it is a straightforward romance that focuses on its quirky characters. There's more to it, but the basic premise follows a familiar formula. Maybe this is the only kind of film the director can make these days, or maybe she simply wanted to have some work and income.
The film has won awards. It an Oscar finalist for Best Foreign Language Film. So it compares favorably to many other 2017 films. But it compares unfavorably to other Ildikó Enyedi films.

I just read this interview with her. https://www.filmcomment.com/blog/interview-ildiko-enyedi/ She sounds very happy with the end product, with no misgivings about the nature of the film.

>Szőts István: Emberek a havason
Sentimental social realism about mountain folk, in a similar vein as How Green Was My Valley.
It's an unexpected Christmas film too. In fact it's very Catholic.
