I haven't seen Kolberg (waiting for a good version) but it should be on that list because Goebbels sunk so much money into it.
Olympia is one of the best documentaries ever made – maybe the best film made by a woman. I know it's a controversial issue but it's disappointing that Leni's career was a casualty of war.

I haven't studied German films from this period very much, but it's obviously interesting to see what the culture was producing.

I'm curious if this version is better quality as they've invested money in extras and even a commentary track (which I wouldn't mind hearing).

It's interesting that Leni had no family at all? Her sole heir is her secretary.
Heir donates estate of Hitler's filmmaker, Leni Riefenstahl, to cultural museum
<A GERMAN CULTURAL foundation said it has been bequeathed photos, films, manuscripts, letters and files from the estate of Leni Riefenstahl, the legendary filmmaker best known for the propaganda movies she made for Nazi Germany.
<The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation said today that Riefenstahl’s sole heir, her former secretary, donated the complete collection amassed by the filmmaker, who died in 2003.
<Her films included “Triumph of the Will,” which recorded the Nazis’ 1934 rally at Nuremberg, and, Olympia, a meditation on muscle and movement at the 1936 Berlin Olympic games.
<Riefenstahl always defended her work, saying she knew nothing of Nazi atrocities.
<Foundation president Hermann Parzinger says his organisation will treat the material with “a special responsibility for the critical examination of this controversial person of contemporary history”.

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play. Hitler's Hollywood
Narrated by Udo Kier. Filmmaker Rüdiger Suchsland suggests that the Third Reich was essentially an immersive movie starring the German nation, produced and directed by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. Hitler’s Hollywood collages key films from the more than 1000 features the Nazis produced from 1933-1945: musicals, melodramas, romances, costume dramas, war films – and when the real war got tough, insanely lavish, over-the-top fantasies. The German volk were portrayed as happy and sporty with lives of exaggerated cheerfulness or, conversely, full of morbid yearning for a death that would serve the Fatherland. Hannah Arendt gives perspective and context: “One of the chief characteristics of modern masses… (is) they do not trust their eyes and ears, but only their imaginations. What convinces masses are not facts, not even invented facts, but only the consistency of the illusion.” It’s a frightening insight that could just as easily apply to the American political landscape today. – Karen Cooper, Director, Film Forum

Wow, I wasn't expecting to be so impressed with Opfergang. I'd put it up there with Olympia as one of the best of these (granted I haven't seen too many others).
Opfergang is the German cousin of Jack Cardiff's Technicolor dreamworld films where every stitch of clothing and every inch of production design is meticulously planned and color-coordinated to create some of the most sumptuous images in all of cinema. I notice cinematographer Bruno Mondi had a very productive career that spanned decades. I will be paying more attention to him from now on.
When watching Third Reich dramas you're sensitive to any commentary/propaganda concerning the war effort or daily life in Germany. On the surface Opfergang seems like a lavish escapist melodrama a la Douglas Sirk with a central theme of self-sacrifice. But there are other points of interest. One of which is the nagging reminder of mortality, introduced by a grandfather clock bearing a placard that reads "One of these hours will be your last". And a major plot point is the terminal illness of one of the main characters. This angle is rather morbid given the grim direction of the war in 1944. However I think the film had a dual purpose: acknowledge the hardship while seeking to cheer up the German people by transporting them to a world of opulence and splendor, just as the main character Albrecht seeks to cheer up his somber, Nietzsche-reading in-laws by thrusting open the windows to let in the sunshine.

>Russell returned to television with Dance of the Seven Veils (1970) which sought to portray Richard Strauss as a Nazi: one scene in particular showed a Jewish man being tortured while a group of SS men look on in delight, with Strauss's music as the score. The Strauss family was so outraged by the film that they withdrew all music rights. The film is effectively banned from being screened until Strauss's copyright expires in 2019.
>"My intention was to paint in broad strokes," he said. "I wanted strong, hard outlines to bring out aspects of this man and his work that to my mind have been overlooked. Strauss was a selfadvertising, vulgar, commercial man."

Maybe, do you have confirmation? I'm surprised Strauss' family is still able to exert copyright.
This film sounds like it follows the anti-authoritarian mindset of the late 1960s. The great composers faced newfound skepticism because beauty was seen (by some) as a product of bourgeois culture. Certainly the Nazis were big proponents of beauty as well, so why not slander a great composer by depicting him as a Nazi.

it was a film that played during the Reich for a time so it counts. Nazis also banned Victory of Faith (1933) because Rohm was in it but that doesn't make it a Reich era film from a historical context.

Despite Lang being Jewish, his wife was a member of the Nazi party and I even remember reading that Goebbels offered to give him "Aryan citizenship" if he directed a film for the party. Given Goebbels track record for the truth, I think they would have executed him afterward though.

> his wife was a member of the Nazi party
Somehow I never knew that. Not a pretty woman but she was a great screenwriter.
<A Nazi banner flew over Lang’s house in the early 1930s – and while many ascribe that action to von Harbou – Gottfried Reinhardt and Harold Nebenzal told McGilligan, “Lang was lax in tolerating the Nazis and flirted with Party approval.” Whether Lang was a Nazi sympathizer is still an unanswered question and McGilligan states “evidence lingers on either side of the issue” and while it is likely that a definitive answer will never be forthcoming, it belies the hard-line, anti-Nazi stance that Lang would affect in Hollywood and indicates that what we think we know about Lang is no more than the smoke of myth. One thing that will become clear is that it wasn’t von Harbou’s politics that led to the divorce. One reason for Lang’s flight might exist in the sense that the Nazis had a party member in von Harbou and an apolitical and troublesome personality in Fritz Lang.

The flag was probably 100% Harbou's idea but Lang most likely did not care either way about the politics, just like every one else at the time. I can't fault him for not predicting the future and seeing what would happen during WWII.
