No.3564
At /film/ we have an ongoing Film Club which features titles suggested by the board. Usually there's a different theme each month. The tentative plan for March was to start Concerning Violence in a few days while choosing two other films for later in the month.
However since Concerning Violence is not yet widely available outside private sites, many members may not be able to watch it. If anyone has a link, we can still do it. Otherwise we'll wait until later.
Either way, the floor is open to suggest interesting films to be featured this month and beyond. We can continue February's theme of newer releases, or look at political documentaries, or perhaps there's another theme you'd like to explore. Let's hear your ideas.

I guess I can download Concerning Violence and upload it to megaupload over the night, can you write the opening post though? I will also try making a fancy banner.

>>3578Sure, that's workable if you'd prefer not to wait. I think it's a good choice and it should generate an interesting discussion regardless of whether we do it now or later.
We don't need to start for a couple days, but I'm fine with writing the introduction and using your banner.

Here's my suggestion if we pick more 2013-14 releases. I doubt it's the best film ever made, but I've been planning to watch for a while and maybe other people are interested too.

Sounds like a plan. These suggestion threads don't always get a lot of interest. But with two people in favor, the motion is adopted.
We'll start that film in a few days. Meanwhile this thread remains open for further suggestions.

Also we will need a banner to advertise Strange Colour in the board announcements. If you are a creative type who wants to contribute, the image dimensions should be 500x100 pixels.

I'd like to recommend Knifer by Yannis Economides from 2010.
Not 2013-14 but it should be new enough for the theme i hope.
"Following his father's death, Nikos leaves the provinces to work in Athens guarding his brutish uncle's dogs. Nikos finds the dynamic of his relationship with his uncle changing when his uncle's wife draws closer to him. This relentlessly gritty film noir won seven Hellenic Film Academy Awards this year, including Best Picture. "

Will there be a date when we watch the movie together or will we just discuss the movie at the end of the month in the >>3908 thread?
Suggestions for next month, maybe Coherence, even tho it already gained some attention or In Order of Dissapearance. Nicely done Norwegian(?) black comedy in a Coen like fashion, with Stellan Skarsgård.

How about something related to spring or Easter?
I thought of DeMille's King of Kings but there are probably others…

There's one leftover possibility: In Order of Disappearance. Do you guys want to do that next or something else?
What other suggestions for films or format do you have? Are people still interested in this feature or has it become boring? It was nice to have a broader scope of discussion this time, but I'm not sure how people actually watched The King of Kings..

BO,
Do you have a specific genre picked out before hand? Or is it just kind of a random pick outta the bag?
What if you chose a genre at the end of each month and we vote on which film to show within it?

I apologize for not reading your post BO.
What theme do you have selected for this month?
How about old school martial art/kung fu films from the 70s? Or even samurai?

To start, we need people to pitch films (or themes) they want to see. The theme can be helpful to narrow down the brainstorming.
I'm not going to mandate one specific theme, but if people like an idea such as martial arts they can suggest films within that genre. Comment on other peoples' suggestions so we get a discussion going.
In the past, we usually watched titles with less that 5000 votes on IMDb. This ensured a new viewing experience for most people.
So let's hear what you guys want to watch…

/monster/ has had a bunch of 'movie nights' that have worked well, where they play 4 films in succession.
For kung-fu movies you could have one from the 70s, one from the 80s, one from the 90s and one recent film.
Only the Internationally popular films such as Bruce Lee's have anything close to 5,000 votes.

i kind of doubt you could get any more than like two people on here at the same time to watch a movie together, people are busy and we seem to be pretty international. I think we'd all be torrenting and watching at our leisure within the month

me too.
I was thinking that the film which we are going to advertise needs to be: colored(since many gets thrown off by black and white movies), english( many dont like subs), and kinda fast pace and between 90 minutes. wayou think?

No one is recommending anything. I haven't seen a lot of martial arts movies but Boxer's Omen is pretty essential in my opinion.
But, it gets mentioned a lot. So maybe somebody else has a better idea?
(I don't think English language is important because that eliminates Asian films.)

Well no kung fu movies are in black & white, and most of them have awful English dubs, but I believe people here don't have a problem with reading subs. It's probably not wise having a movie over 2 hours in length.
>>5267
I didn't know a genre had been decided yet. I am quite knowledgeable when it comes to kung fu films, but first it's important to highlight the difference between kung fu and martial arts.
Kung fu refers to films that have mainly unarmed combat styles, whereas martial arts covers just about everything from samurai movies, to 60s swordfighters, to cgi cheesefests.

what if we do an "one hour of short films" we could create a playlist of a bunch of them, so if someone gets late to the party they can just wait a few minutes till the next short begins, in that way encouraging people to join any time. Many people havent seen short movies too.
