Surprised there's no Criterion thread yet.
I'm interested to see some of the Fassbinder blurays coming out. I've also got John Ford's
My Darling Clementine ready to watch whenever I have time. And I'm happy to see my favorite Todd Haynes movie getting an HD upgrade in the near future.
http://www.criterion.com/library/expanded_view?f=1&s=release_datehttp://www.criterion.com/library/expanded_view?f=2&s=release_dateThe last Criterion I saw was the Ray Milland supernatural mystery
The Uninvited. As I expected, it was good but not great. It rates about the same as
Ministry of Fear, another decent Milland Criterion.

Getting back to one of the films mentioned in OP, I thought Ford's My Darling Clementine was uneven. The technical aspects, especially the noirish lighting, were stunning throughout. But the meandering screenplay builds no tension until over an hour has passed; it's understandable why Zanuck wanted cuts for the theatrical release.
Victor Mature is out of place in a non-spaghetti Western. He's like Stallone in a Stetson.
Clementine is quite a qt but she barely has screen time. It's not her story yet they named it after her, in lieu of a more evocative, exciting title.

Criterion is great, without them we wouldn't have insanely good transfers of many great films… But damn are typical Criterion collectors the worst kind of tryhards. Just like… midwestern nerds that want to feel cultured. It's so easy to be a cinephile now as long as you blindly buy everything Criterion puts out and give the most basic analysis that tends to go completely against what the filmmaker is about or going for. I doubt there is a bigger difference between artist and consumer in any other medium really.
The other day I went on /r/criterion and I found a thread. Apparently they've started a "recommendation committee" that, once a month, vote on a film that will be pitched (or I should say spammed) to Criterion for their consideration in a letter/form. Think rare, obscure, OOP and poorly transferred stuff. Films that, for the first time in possibly decades, will look as it was intended, not some god-forsaken 4:3 aspect ratio fifth generation VHS rip recorded on TV in the 90s. Guess what film they picked?
Synechdoche, NY
But hey, they seem to be doing pretty well business-wise. Basically the idea seems to be, watch these films, and you will know cinema. But there is *so* much more out there, and not all of the Criterion shit has to be good.
But yeah, overall, I'm glad they exist. Their restoration and transfer work is good enough that I can overlook the lames that buy the films, and perhaps everything I've mentioned is part of a bigger problem in cinephilia (or just straight concentrated plebetry)

>>3189> A wildly ambitious film from the mind of Charlie Kaufman, whose first turn as a director highlights his ability to tell a multi-layered story about human emotion, interaction and overall fascination. If characters alone could merit Criterion releases, Philip Seymour Hoffman's Caden Cotard is a worthy combatant. While the films original blu release offered a good enough transfer and decent supplements, there is more that can be done with this film. It was named Roger Ebert's #1 film of the 00's and still, it is a criminally under-seen film that would benefit from a criterion release.Ouch. The thinking seems to be "I want an expensive version of my favorite film." I'm a little puzzled by the idea that a Criterion release gives a film wider exposure than a Sony Pictures bluray on Amazon for ten bucks.

Arty, aesthetically beautiful, and strangely universal in its message; Whether you're a devout Christian or a militant atheist, you can find something to adore in the allegory the film presents and the symbolism laced all the way through. It can be viewed as a bashing, or a praising of Christ, both in equal abandon.

>Tokyo Drifter
>Seijun Suzuki (鈴木 清順 Suzuki Seijun?), born Seitaro Suzuki (鈴木 清太郎 Suzuki Seitarō) on 24 May 1923, is a Japanese filmmaker, actor, and screenwriter. His films are known for their jarring visual style, irreverent humour, nihilistic cool and entertainment-over-logic sensibility.
I think he succeeded.
I haven't see any of his films, which one do you guys recommend?

New releases announced for August:
> Presenting Truffaut’s movie about moviemaking Day for Night, De Palma’s Dressed to Kill, Reisz’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman, and the Dardennes’ Two Days, One Night, plus Dassin’s Night and the City on Blu-ray for the first time and our latest Eclipse series, Agnès Varda in California.
I might try to watch some of these: http://www.criterion.com/boxsets/1124-eclipse-series-43-agnes-varda-in-california
Eclipse Series 43: Agnès Varda in California
> The legendary French filmmaker Agnès Varda, whose remarkable career began in the 1950s and has continued into the twenty-first century, produced some of her most provocative works while living on the West Coast of the United States. After temporarily relocating from France to California in the late sixties with her husband, Jacques Demy, so that he could make his first Hollywood film, Varda became entranced by the politics, youth culture, and sunshine of the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas, and created documentary explorations and fictional narratives—sometimes within the same film. She returned a decade later, and made more fascinating portraits of outsiderness. Her five revealing, entertaining California films, encompassing shorts and features, are collected in this set, which demonstrates that Varda was as deft an artist in unfamiliar terrain as she was on her own turf.

The Jacques Demy film mentioned there is probably Model Shop.
I think it's worth watching even though I didn't really like it, ha ha. It's 90 minutes of 2001's Gary Lockwood bumming around Los Angeles – not like a beach hippie but like a French New Wave shiftless protagonist.

Seijun's Youth of the Beast (1963) is a much better film than Tokyo Drifter. And it actually stays mostly coherent.
My only problem with Criterion is they focus too much on that artsy fartsy borefest cinema. And they've all but ignored classic HK cinema, probably because it's not pretentious enough. Oh, and 2 of my favourite films are of course amongst the few that are OOP.
Other companies like Arrow are also starting to beat them at their own game, using better compression techniques.

Le Circle Rouge & Chungking Express. At least with Le Circle Rouge there's the StudioCanal release though. I'm not paying $100+ for the Criterion versions.
Hard Boiled & The Killer are the most well-known films Internationally I guess. It's a shame that the best release they've had is a DVD upscale that's been DNR'd to hell, but that's the same sad story for most of HK cinema. Golden Harvest (one of the big film studios in the 70s-90s) sold all their rights to Fortune Star that just release all their Blu-Rays as half-assed upscales. And it seems like every studio other than Shaw Bros. all left their film stock to rot in a leaky cupboard. I mean, I could name some amazing films that have never even been given a half-decent DVD release.
HK cinema would definitely need its own thread, but I can give you a few recommendations. It essentially boils down to two types of films: Martial Arts & Heroic Bloodshed (Triads vs. cops, violent action drama). I don't know if Kung Fu films interest you but i'll make some recommendations for the second genre:
Long Arm of the Law (1984)
City on Fire (1987)
The Big Heat (1988)
Full Contact (1992)
Ebola Syndrome (1996 - doesn't belong in this genre but it's classic HK)
Once Upon a Time in Triad Society (1996)
The Longest Nite (1998)
Beast Cops (1998)
The Mission (1999)
Election (2005)
Drug War (2013)
Now I know you'll never find a Jackie Chan film on Criterion, but his HK work is a great example of that brilliant fight choreography that you won't find in Hollywood. We're talking 100s of reshoots and extending filming time to make sure everything looks perfect. There are some real classics in the HK back-catalogue though that are screaming out for a restoration.

It could be more of a business decision. Michael Bay's The Rock and Armageddon were also in their catalog (and they get a lot of shit for it). I guess Lena Dunham had enough positive buzz a few years ago to warrant a deal.
Their releases of new films aren't always on the same level as the old classics. Even some of their old films aren't very good. I think some distribution licenses are cheaper to purchase in bulk, so they might buy a few weaker films in order to release a good one.

This looks cool
http://bloody-disgusting.com/home-video/3392532/kino-lorber-gives-gold-june-14/
> Kino Lorber has announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of GOLD, a rare 1930s German science fiction film directed by Karl Hartl and starring Brigitte Helm (Metropolis), mastered in HD from archival elements preserved by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung. This futuristic thriller, filled with high-tech sets, depicts the struggle between scientific progress and corporate greed (re-visiting some of the themes that Fritz Lang had explored in Metropolis).
> GOLD will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on June 14, 2016, with a SRP of $29.95 for the Blu-ray and $19.95 for the DVD. The film is of historical interest as an example of the cinema produced during the 1930s in National Socialist Germany. It utilizes some of the key talents of the German film industry of the silent era, including production designer Otto Hunte (who had designed Fritz Lang’s futuristic fantasies Metropolis and Woman in the Moon), and cinematographer Günther Rittau (who had photographed Lang’s Die Nibelungen and Metropolis and Sternberg’s The Blue Angel). GOLD is not only a handsomely-produced drama of corporate espionage, it also reveals the ways in which English and American culture was subtly condemned in films made under the Third Reich.

Anything of note here that's not on the Laserdisc or either MGM BD? I'm intrigued by the idea of a potentially better restoration, but I know how soft and grainy some of these pictures from the '60s-'80s can look, especially from a smaller production like this one.

DVD Beaver sounds happy with this version. Most of the time their disc comparison is pretty reliable.
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-ray_reviews_70/the_graduate_blu-ray.htm
> This is a "new 4K digital restoration" and it towers over the other lackluster 1080P visuals. It's unreal how colors gain vibrancy and richness (greens and blues) - it is, generally, darker and that is presumably more accurate and grain textures return! The only other thing I'll mention is that there is a difference in the ratio with the Criterion looking a shade horizontally stretched (slightly fatter faces) and/or the others looking vertically stretched (thinner faces). The Criterion also has much more information in the frame than the StudioCanal and, generally, shifts a shade right against the MGM. It looks absolutely unbelievable in-motion - the film looks brand new - and I have never seen it so beautiful.
> Criterion give the option of a linear PCM in the original mono at 1152 kbps (24-bit) OR a robust surround bump via a DTS-HD Master 5.1 at a healthy 3407 kbps (24-bit). The latter is very impressive notably in the iconic Simon & Garfunkel songs (written by Dave Grusin) like The Sounds of Silence, Scarborough Fair/Canticle, Mrs. Robinson etc. If you can believe it - it sounds (crisp guitar, pristine vocals) as good as the video! It's so appropriate to give the original option but I suspect many will gravitate to the 5.1 although the separation/effects in the film are modest. It's all in the depth of the music. The Blu-ray disc has optional English (SDH) subtitles and is region 'A'-locked.
> As predicted, Criterion stack the disc with wonderful supplements including two audio commentaries - one from 2007 featuring Nichols in conversation with filmmaker Steven Soderbergh and another from 1987 featuring film scholar Howard Suber. Neither are new but they have plenty of value when reheard with this incredible 4K video. Criterion add a new 40-minute interview with actor Dustin Hoffman as well as a new, 25-minute, conversation between producer Lawrence Turman and screenwriter Buck Henry and an interesting piece with film writer and historian Bobbie O’Steen about editor Sam O’Steen’s work on The Graduate. It runs juts over 26-minutes. Students of “The Graduate,” a 26-minute documentary from 2007 on the film’s influence. “The Graduate” at 25, a 1992 featurette on the making of the film - seen on previous DVDs and runs 25+ minutes. I enjoyed the interview with Nichols by Barbara Walters, from a 1966 episode of NBC’s Today show lasting a 1/4 of an hour and an excerpt from a 1970 appearance by singer-songwriter Paul Simon on The Dick Cavett Show (only 5-minutes). There are three screen test clips (about 13-minutes worth in total including one with Hoffmann and Ross), a trailer and the package has a liner notes booklet with an essay by journalist and critic Frank Rich.
> I am just blown away by this package - 4K is really living up it is capabilities. This is a must-own - absolutely our highest recommendation!

May releases for Criterion
also Jeanne Dielman which I thought was already on bluray
Scorsese's WCP vol 3 includes
- Limite / Mário Peixoto 1931
- Revenge / Ermek Shinarbaev 1989
- Insiang / Lino Brocka 1976
- Mysterious Object at Noon / Apichatpong Weerasethakul 2000
- Law of the Border / Lütfi Ö. Akad 1966
- Taipei Story / Edward Yang 1985
Othello had post-production/release issues like most of Welles' films. I think the best version used to be the Criterion Laserdiscs, but they were taken off the market because of a conflict with Orson's daughter. She didn't want competition with her own restoration of the film, one which attempted to improve perceived sound deficiencies by rescoring music and redubbing actors. Anyway hopefully this is all cleared up and we have a nice version to watch.

I saw it once but I don't remember very much. I liked Crumb from Terry Zwigoff. Louie Bluie is meh.
The common thread of those three films is old blues and jazz musicians heard on 78 rpm records. It seems like an interesting subculture of weirdo collectors. But I can't quite understand their passion because most of that music is too scratchy and raw to do anything for me.

Arbelos Films - a new distribution label

Press: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/toronto-arbelos-launches-new-art-house-distributor-last-movie-1036141
<Arbelos, a new boutique distributor focusing on the release of both new and restored classic art house titles, officially launched at this year's Toronto Film Festival. The company's first release will be a 4K restoration of Dennis Hopper's 1971 cult classic The Last Movie, which will get a new theatrical bow, and its first ever Blu-ray and digital streaming release, via Arbelos in 2018.
I thought The Last Movie stunk but maybe you guys feel differently
<Arbelos looks to blending both new independent features with 4K restorations of classic and cult films, cutting across all genres and eras, the group said. Arbelos plans to release 6-8 titles per year, around half new titles, and will be scouting films while in Toronto.
<The team behind Arbelos — co-founders David Marriott, Dennis Bartok, Craig Rogers and Ei Toshinari — previously collaborated together on Cinelicious Pics, the distribution arm of L.A. digital restoration studio Cinelicious and the new company's initial slate will include Cinelicious Pics film library of 14 feature films, including the recent 4K restoration of Toshio Matsumoto’s transgender classic Funeral Parade of Roses, Tim Sutton’s Dark Night and the 4K restoration of Eiichi Yamamoto’s underground anime Belladonna of Sadness.

It's nice to have two commentaries (one text, one audio). But a lot of the film is demystified when you learn about the background, so don't spoil the experience by enabling commentary the first time.

I don't feel like anyone has the right to say it's hard to be a cinephile as long as he uses any privat tracker or has access to the internet.

They probably weren't, be here's what it could be like
Very Slow Movie Player
VSMP is an object that contains a Raspberry Pi computer, custom software, and a reflective ePaper display (similar to a Kindle), all housed inside a 3D printed case. Every 2.5 minutes a frame from the film stored on the computer’s memory card is extracted, converted to black and white using a dithering algorithm, and then communicated to the reflective ePaper display. This adds up to playing the film at a rate of 24 frames per hour, which is in contrast to the traditional speed of 24 frames per second.

Any thoughts on the color timing of the different cuts of The New World?
Supposedly the Extended Cut is the only one rescanned and color correction supervised by the filmmakers, but IMO it's got that Blu-Ray teal™ that looks unnatural.
They seemed to be trying to correct the admittedly overly red tone and possible oversaturation of the first two versions, but IMO the earlier cuts still look better, colorwise.
Which version do you prefer?

Also am I insane or does the theatrical cut look a hair less red than the first cut?

>You have a version which, finally, is managed by Malick and not incompetent producers.
Is hard to prefer an "imposed" version of your own art works, even if it looks worse to the eye, tbh.

>MPC never saves images with the color management data.
It's also hard to get MPC to capture subtitles or even anamorphic stretching. But I curious what do you achieve by using Color Management? I never thought to enable it.

Try turning it on and see for yourself. I'm pretty sure it's the way movies are supposed to be watched.
I think having it off is like watching an ungraded RAW image.
I didn't know what it did for years either, mind you.

I'm excited about the new bluray release from Arrow Films for Khrustalyov, My Car! It's s wild ride -- best if you don't read about the plot. Just strap in and hold on.

How can one justify having something with штрихкод or numbered at the place he resides? Genuinly interested. Even more so how can one be proud of it and throw this world's imaginary currency at the creators of those soy injections.

It always reminds me of 1) interviews with players after match 2) sports commentary. I switch for suicidal thoughts on the first watch, but they sure get deleted after ripping.

What "home video company" do you like the most? I have to say that I like Second Run the most and Kino Lorber sometimes do good releases as well. I don't know much about the scene though, but would like to know more, just to look through some catalogs to know what to download. but

I really like Second Run too. Their excellent catalog has many of the best films from the Visegrád, and most of them are exclusive to their company. One problem is they are based in London and thereby subject to the accursed BBFC. They've released DVDs with minor cuts in the past.

Didn't know, thanks.
I really wish that someday everybody will have as clean catalog as them. But some of the selections are weird, like https://www.secondrundvd.com/release_cinderella.html I wouldn't mind if it was for Pištěk's costumes and it being fairy tale, but why feminism? Popelka is german and not czech too when I'm at that.

This should be enough explanation
Actor James Mason, who worked with Ophüls on two films, wrote a short poem about the director's love for tracking shots and elaborate camera movements:
A shot that does not call for tracks
Is agony for poor old Max,
Who, separated from his dolly,
Is wrapped in deepest melancholy.
Once, when they took away his crane,
I thought he'd never smile again.
Every time I see and read something like this, I have desire to kill all the people who lack any decency whatsoever. I already have to see people clothed, as if it wasn't enough.
