OK, I dug one up. The opening scene is upsetting to some people. Maybe the scene was cut from certain versions because it's on the DVD at a different resolution than other parts of the film.

The end ruined it. No need to ham fist the message physically by making the girl have her first period at the end, also anyone who's seen a bull get killed before knows that they edited the scene later.

Perfumed Nightmare, EXCELLENT film. Reminds me of my visits to my family at the Philippines. Been meaning to watch Maynila, but first I've heard of Now Showing and Kinatay. Thanks.

yeah Perfumed Nightmare is my favorite out of those. It's great to see what kind of film is possible on a very low budget.

Ernesto de la Cruz (September 7, 1957 – August 29, 1992), better known as Weng Weng, was a Filipino actor and martial artist. Only 83 cm (2 feet, 9 inches) tall, he is listed in the Guinness World Records as the shortest adult actor in a leading role. He played Secret Agent 00 in For Y’ur Height Only and The Impossible Kid, and also starred in the western D’Wild Wild Weng and Da Best in the West. In total, Weng Weng was a co-star or appeared in 14 films. However, many of them are considered lost.

Yes the slaughter is edited. The upsetting aspect is how the bull is repeated clubbed on the head with the back of an axe -- brutal compared to "humane" killing in civilized areas.

Silip is often classified as exploitation because of the amount of nudity and violence. But I think most of the extreme aspects of this film are defined by primal energy rather than cheap thrills. For that reason Silip is a lot better than soulless Italian exploitation films that have a similar aesthetic.

There's no "Humane" way of killing a bull, it's a bull, the average "Third worlder" doesn't own a gun much less a air stunner.

I agree though. Still it seems too corny for me to enjoy.

Perfumed Nightmare: Thanks for a great recommendation. I watched it because of this thread.

The barebones budget is an asset. Usually disconnected, post-dubbed dialogue is detrimental or distracting. In this case it enhances the poetic qualities of the film.

One more thing. Half an hour into the film, Kidlat tells his daughter:

"YOU are the master of your vehicle. Only YOU can tell it where to go."

I think this concept of self-determination defines his outlook on life. So he becomes disillusioned with "progress" because he's no longer in control of the situation. Outside forces pull him forward against his will. The final scene is his attempt to return to the driver's seat.

I watched mondomanila and Desaparadiso and i liked very much his style. The latter really struck me hard, since here in Argentina we had a similar experiencie with a Militar dictatorship taking """political prisoners""" and basically torturing them and then killing them, but selling the image that they were "missing", which is very psychotic, even worse than plain killing and telling the famillies what happened.

I didn't know that, I only knew about Chile and Brazil. Now I see you guys had two military coups. I'm surprised the US wasn't more involved with those, but I suppose there's some limit to how much foreign meddling they can manage at one time.

It was. It was so involved that if it weren't for the fact that the us didn't want to lose the ""battle against communism"", we wouldn't have had the coups.

Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, all had dictatorships during the same time.
