I remember reading something that said Flynn was actually considered at some point early on but I have no source whatsoever. I think it was Sonic Retro, was in Japanese, and translated by Windii. I distinctly remember people complaining because they wanted Maekawa back instead of another Western writer like the ones who wrote the Boom games and Lost World

On the day of the 2016 anniversary party stream, some guy named Larry posted details to Sonic Stadium about the game which was still Sonic Wars at the time, though nothing of Infinite or tying to Sonic Mania. Just the avatar, part of the story where Tails thinks Sonic is dead and doesn't join until Sonic is saved, and Eggman winning

Yeah, there was a supposedly leaked script doing the rounds. I still have a copy somewhere. But I don't remember it mentioning anything about Mephiles. Also I don't remember when it leaked but I think it was after the game was released.

Features Mephiles as one of the copied enemies in the finale fight and The Phantom Ruby originally referred to as "The Valtron".
Besides a few other changes and the lack of Episode Shadow's plot, apparently Infinite's origin was different along with a reason as to why the Ruby had different powers between games. The sequel hook was made later into production.

If mephiles was to be brought back, i can't imagine thats all he would amount to; i suppose it implies they were thinking of making the next game have him or something.or maybe DLC
He could have been from an earlier draft or something though, like a null space boss or something.
Its somewhat notable that not much is different even by that point, Mephiles just exists for no reason. Like no extra scenes like you'd expect.

Just like Metal, Chaos, and fake Shadow, so not really surprising. The only villain to get a bit more exposure outside of Eggman and Infinite was Zavok.

While true, even they get "highlights"; metal is a boss, shadow gets a cutscene and Chaos gets to sorta feature in the most striking stage of the game.
Mephiles flat out doesn't exist before this point, and the "even Mephiles" thing makes it sound like he had to have done something at the very least.

As an obvious point, you'd expect an early script to contain larger ideas for obviously rushed concepts like the illusion enemies. The final product is clearly a case of rushing, not intended malproportion.
However this is clearly already based on what they expect they can do, Infinite's maybe not-Null Space definitely doesn't exist by this point.
The green hill concept art isn't around.though that ones more of a crapshoot, at least not null space has leftovers Classic sonic has been shoved in even if not all the tie in elements have been implemented yet.this script was made a year after mania started development after all
The final is clearly a gutted version of this with the tie in done fully.
Say now that i think about it, didn't this script have some comments to go with it? Like comments that clearly pointed at issues with the script.and that they ignored
2014-2015 forces really seems like an interesting topic in regards to a lot of things, probably before they knew what they were limited to and no shoved in tie in.
I wouldn't be shocked if little of the actual game existed by that point, but from a concept view it seems that Forces probably went through a lot.
I remember Lizuka mentioning that at one point Buddy was considered too much of a main character and was given less importance in the final. Notably despite being mentioned in that script the death egg/eggmanland lack any concept art thinking about it.
Wonder what kind of concept art got held back.of course i could just be overestimating how much was made for early forces.

Yes, I think I remember something to that extent. I think the comments were from Webber, though I don't remember if the comments themselves leaked or the leaker just made comments about some of Webber's comments. How legit is that script anyway? I mean I know what the tweet says but is that trustworthy?

Fuck, I'm still salty that Green Hill & Null Space level never became a thing in the final product. I remember the CaC was supposed to have more options than what we got too. Sonic Forces had so many cool ideas that I wish were better utilized.

I feel letting him be lynched would contradict his character so I would choose not to force an ending like that, but some level of retribution would feel good. Honestly, I think they let things get way too bad in hopes of creating tension, but it hasn't really worked for me and now the conclusion is probably going to disappoint because there's no satisfying method to end arc.

I agree. This is, what, the second major arc of the comics? In this, alone, we've had:
-several major characters "dying"
-a near total apocalypse
-Sonic's decision to be a nice guy getting questioned by several of the good guys
-Sonic close to "death" and constantly getting closer
-pretty much every shred of hope getting torn apart
And, to top it all off, the big finale is a fight with the fucking Zeti, unless they pull a dumb twist on us once Sonic goes super. Isn't this supposed to be a kids' comic about a blue hedgehog with an attitude that likes to run fast? I feel like Flynn is beginning to forget that and is trying to go too big, too serious, too quick. Where exactly does he plan to go from here? Eggman has done practically the most heinous thing possible short of allying with Satan himself, all life on the planet has come to the precipice of complete annihilation to a near indestructible threat, and Sonic himself is full of self-doubt and nearly became a goner. What is going through everyone's heads at IDW?

Which is ironic, because it's true yet the comic has shown a lot of resistance to doing exactly that by focusing too much on action and being as shallow as it could, probably in hopes of appealing to kids as much as possible. Nothing really feels engaging or memorable to me, they just keep creating more awful situations one after the other and it doesn't feel like there's anything of substance behind it for me to care, it just feels cheap, like that time they shoehorned Team Dark dying in Archie because they just felt "someone had to die lol."

Seems the arc is going to abruptly finish by some magic plot device and then I think they'll move on to some entirely new arc that doesn't really take advantage of almost anything that came before. I get the feeling they're going to start handling this more and more like the games.

While I do think there's something to be said for how much has happened on the second arc of the comic, I don't see much issue with where they go from here once the arc is actually over. The relationship between Eggman/Starline is dead, Sonic will most likely be vindicated in his belief of letting Mr. Tinker go & they seemingly set up something in the future that will have Eggman face the possibility of helping people again in the last few issues, so we'll more than likely see these elements explored post-Zombot arc. And with the plotline of the Warp Topaz possibly fucking up space-time I kinda have a feeling they might tie that into a crossover story in the future

Oh, it's absolutely handling things more like the games. Ian's always had his flaws as writer even during my favorite runs of his, but IDW is the most hands-on SEGA has been on a Sonic comic & IIRC, they've even helped Ian on ideas for plots & whatnot. So the comic won't be 1:1 with the games, but it'll definitely be more like it.

Yeah, Dash & Spin was a pretty obscure Sonic manga from the mid-2000s. I don't know how many have been translated, but I do know that's not the case for the majority of the series. Hell, I remember reading something that some issues weren't even scanned.

I really like this interpretation of Shadow just being happy to find someone like him. It makes sense, Maria and Gerald were pretty much the only people he knew, and both were normal humans. Finding another cocky hedgehog that could run fast would be a godsend for someone like him that had few friends.
