>Trump officials have barred health experts from helping end one of the worst Ebola outbreaks in history
https://www.vox.com/2018/10/25/18015780/ebola-outbreak-2018-drc-congo-security-trump-cdc
One of the largest Ebola outbreaks in history shows no signs of slowing — and the Trump administration barred US health experts who want to help at the outbreak’s epicenter in the Democratic Republic of Congo from traveling there.
White House’s National Security Council (NSC) coordinated a government review of the security risks, involving representatives from multiple government agencies and departments. The review determined that CDC officials could not return to areas where militant attacks threaten security, including Beni.

>CDC director warns that Congo’s Ebola outbreak may not be containable
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2018/11/05/cdc-director-warns-that-congos-ebola-outbreak-may-not-be-containable/?utm_term=.c226d1e645c3
"…There are 6 million people in North Kivu. By comparison, the entire population of Liberia, one of the hardest-hit countries during the West Africa Ebola epidemic of 2014-2016, is about 4.8 million."
"The outbreak is taking place in a part of Congo that is an active war zone. Dozens of armed militias operate in the area, attacking government outposts and civilians, complicating the work of Ebola response teams and putting their security at risk. Violence has escalated in recent weeks, severely hampering the response. The daily rate of new Ebola cases more than doubled in early October. In addition, there is community resistance and deep mistrust of the government. Some sick people have refused to go to treatment centers, health-care workers are still being infected, and some people are dying of Ebola or spreading the virus to new areas."
"An estimated 60 to 80 percent of new confirmed cases have no known epidemiological link to prior cases, making it very difficult for responders to track cases and stop transmission. In late August, the United States withdrew some of the CDC’s most seasoned Ebola experts who had been stationed in Beni, the province’s urban epicenter, because of security risks."
This is the perfect storm

CDC numbers for the same date are updated to 434 cases (386 confirmed, 48 probable) and 252 deaths (204 confirmed, 48 probable). The CDC website has this interesting bit:
> Alert and suspected cases (not reported here), are systematically investigated to confirm or exclude Ebola virus disease before inclusion in the case counts or discarded as non-cases.
So who knows how many suspected cases there are, and who knows of those how many they are able to follow up on. As well as you can see the probable cases are all dead. Likely they were unable to get a serum sample before the patient was in the ground. That means that, if those people were infected, they were able to run the whole infectious gamut without contact with medical professionals capable of taking a blood sample. Let's see how effective your contact tracing methods are, CDC-kun.

Polite sage for doublepost.
I would also like to point at that, even though this is the second largest outbreak, it is getting basically no western media attention. Less media attention = fewer donations = fewer NGOs involved = fewer medical professionals volunteering to respond.
Included is the situational report for November 28. There's some good data here, but I've only time to skim it. Does anyone have any info on how effective the vaccine is? I'm really hoping Ebola-chan can mutate to get around it. That's really where we need to focus our prayers on. She can't cleanse the world if the vaccine works.

The vaccine is said to be effective, but it's difficult to mass produce and store. When it is made it needs to be kept at a very cold temperature. That's why only a few tens of thousands of people have been vaccinated over the years - a drop the bucket compared to the many millions that may potentially be infected.
If Ebola-Chan grew wangs today, you could expect less than 1% of the population to be spared on account of the vaccine.

I remember a few weeks ago that they claimed the vaccine had a 100% effective rate if it was given to someone not yet infected. It made use of a single protein from Ebola-Chan, that way it caused an immune response but had no chance of giving anyone Ebola.
The vaccine requires below freezing tempatures and that alone makes it difficult to give out given Africa’s general infrastructure. That said between the rebels and lack of community trust the a,punt of people vaccinated has dropped like a rock.
The lack of travel restrictions is not helping matters for them though. I guarantee you that will be how Ebola spreads. Someone doesn’t have symptoms crosses the border to their village. The village takes care of them when they get sick and die, all the villagers get it. Then they spread it to their neighbors. It’s going to be amazing to watch

From my limited understanding of medical procedure it seems like they did things properly. Or at least nothing obviously wrong that jumps out at me. But can Ebola mutate so that the vaccine becomes less effective? Or does the vaccine only grant short term immunity?

Yes, she just needs to mutate and the vaccine is worthless, that's why the CDC and governments don't really want to spend any money on coming up with a cure because next week they'll have to make a new one.

South Sudanese doctors on the border are getting vaccinated. Which is actually fairly good news in the short term: supplies are limited and strained. Normally you'd be right, and that's likely what some of the doctors assumed, as well.
However, since before the outbreak began, the region has been in civil war. Islamic forces (and possibly others, I don't recall) had been waging a guerrilla campaign against government and civilians. Early on, this included strikes against the local and foreign doctors treating the infected and vaccinating people. This also led to a distrust of the doctors, knowing that their presence could draw rebel attention. The civil war has also made it difficult to organize travel restrictions or regional quarantines. This allowed Ebola-chan to go from the rural regions to the cities. The cities had their own problems, with not only rebels but criminal gangs.
Flash forward to the last few weeks of December. An election was scheduled, which they probably hoped would soothe the civil war. However, they did not allow Ebola-infected regions to vote, for fear that the large concentration of people would create a hotbed for new cases. (They might have been planning to let them vote later on, in some sort of controlled manner.) In response, they rioted, they held mock votes, and some fled the madness. One of the riot targets was an Ebola clinic, from which a few patients escaped, although it wasn't confirmed whether the escapees were infected or not.
Now refugees are heading to nearby Uganda, which has been preparing for months for just such an occasion. Time will tell if their efforts were enough.

Part of the reason there's election turmoil is that the regions hit hardest by Ebola are mostly opposed to the ruling party, and their votes won't be taken until march, after the new leader/president takes office. We'll find out the results sometime tomorrow. If it turns out that the party in power won the election there will most certainly be violence in Beni and that area as the rumors that Ebola was used as a political tool will seem to have some basis in truth.
It will probably result in civil war. The DRC hasn't had a peaceful transfer of power in all of its history.

Let's hope that, whatever the court decides, it shakes things up. As Fayulu's supporters don't seem super upset that Tshisekedi won, let's pray that the court turns the vote in favor of Fayulu in the hopes that Tshisekedi's supporters are not so willing to lie down.
Also,
>Congo's government cut internet service the day after the vote to prevent speculation on social media. It remained off in parts of the country on Thursday.
The election results might not even be known to the entire country yet. The article gives no information on how those in Ebola-loved zones feel about being excluded which makes me wonder if there is even any news getting through the cordon.

Many new cases are being reported in urbanised areas. Infection are geographically dispersed making containment difficult. Manguredjipa is a region that has just experienced its first infectious case. While the infected likely caught it in another region, the spread is promising. We'll see if the ring vaccination and other efforts stop its spread in that region or if she takes off.

>NEW YORK/KATWA, FEBRUARY 26, 2019—All activities at an Ebola Treatment Center in Katwa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), have been suspended following a violent attack this past weekend in which the facility was partially burned down, said the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on Tuesday. Suspension of activities at the 70-bed facility will severely limit access to essential health services at a time when the region continues to battle an Ebola outbreak.

>2 health workers are among the new confirmed cases in Katwa, all working in the health facility in the Muchanga health area, where several confirmed cases have passed since 10 Mar 2019. The cumulative confirmed and probable cases among the agents is 80 (7.7% of all confirmed and probable cases), including 27 deaths.
>The health facility in the Muchanga health area where health workers have become infected, as well as several cases, should be thoroughly decontaminated, and all remaining healthcare workers should be vaccinated to prevent further infection. See the MoH report below from 27 Mar 2019. It appears the community would not allow for this to take place. The facility should not be used without decontamination because new cases will occur. The community must be convinced of the infectiousness of Ebola and the need for precautionary measures to prevent further spread. But vaccination of frontline workers also must be provided for their safety. According to Helen Branswell, "so far in this outbreak 78 health workers have been infected and 27 have died". - Mod.LK
Not even all healthcare workers have been vaccinated, and it sounds like the locals are being uncooperative in Muchanga. Over 92,000 vaccination total. Does anyone know what agent they're using?
>Due to a relatively well-developed road network, the population of North Kivu is very mobile and travels frequently from one health zone to another. This mobility is the main cause of reactivation of the epidemic in health areas where the transmission of the virus had already been stopped. This is notably the case of Beni, which had no new confirmed cases between 21 Feb and 20 Mar 2019. Since 20 Mar 2019, the Beni outbreak has been reactivated after a person infected with the Ebola virus from Biakato Mine (Mandima) moved to Beni for treatment.

>Zero infection in Beni for a month and then we have resurgence. They really can't stop her, can they?
No, they can't! Vaccines largely rely on herd immunity. When large portions of the population do not vaccinate, it allows viruses to spread between those people and mutate in that community. When the virus mutates it is able to spread to people who have been vaccinated. We see this all the time with the flu. People get vaccinated against one strain of the flu only to get another. The blacks in Africa are distrustful of vaccines and the overwhelming majority will never get vaccinated. So vaccination is hopeless as a solution for them. It's more or less just a temporary measure to protect the doctors and medical staff.

>Only issue is Ebby hasn't mutated to any great extent in a long time.
True, and I think that is because there aren't enough infected. Something like the flu mutates rapidly because it spreads to millions every single year. Everytime it spreads, there's a chance of mutation.
On the bright side of things, Ebola has gone airborne in the past, So she has the potential to grow wangs. The strain that went airborne did not have the potential to harm humans though, so it only killed other primates.

WHO is stating 1373 confirmed cases and 931 confirmed deaths as of 4/27. That is a case fatality rate of 67.8%. Last I updated our announcement bar it was standing at 944 confirmed 564 deaths for a case fatality rate of 59.7%. While it's a small enough gap to be blamed on chance, we should watch it. Increasing fatality rates are a good sign of a slipping response by curefriends. Community fatalities are also a huge statistic to watch as they terrify the curefriends.

'Terrifying' Ebola epidemic out of control in DRC, say experts

Hate to rain on the parade, but it's not the first time this has occurred. What we've seen in the past was there is a latency period from when the vaccination is given to when the person develops immunity. Within this window infection is possible. That health officials ignore this and continue to put the vaccinated but not immune on the front lines demonstrates either their desperation or ignorance.
Or, maybe this is not the case here and she has mutated. She's certainly capable of it.

>Microbiologist and researcher Gary Kobinger, who has been tracking the outbreak from the Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases at Laval University, said "300,000 doses is not enough anymore."
>We've amplified our commitment now to this greater number of around 850,000 [doses]," said Irvine.
>He said they arrived at the figure after consultations with WHO, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and "other interested parties as to what they believe will be needed in the event that the outbreak continues."
Irvine said Merck has another 250,000 doses ready to ship.
All in all… Ebola-Chan's doing great!

Oh now look at this, Uganda's doing daily reports right now.
https://www.afro.who.int/publications/ebola-virus-disease-outbreak-uganda-situation-reports
Apaprently there were 3 confirmed (and 0 probable) cases of our girl in Uganda, all 3 have died. In addition 1 new suspect today.
1507 people have been vaccinated. If my shit-tier math is correct that is 0,004% of Uganda's population. Notably, there were 0 vaccinations today. Wonder why not.
Hey, this thing even has a "Runaways from isolation" category. 0 today but corpses tend to not run I guess.

Slo yer roll Casper; immunity is a natural evolutionary response, plenty of Africans already have it due to constant exposure to it. Same thing with HIV. Remember how that disease was supposed to destroy all Africans?>>30282

>In an interview with the Canadian Broadcast Company (CDC), microbiologist Gary Kobinger, PhD, said the stockpile of the vaccine needs to reach 1 million doses, and halting the virus would require about 72% of the population to be immunized.
>Merck commented it will expand the stockpile to 850,000 doses within 18 months. Since 2016, the WHO and Merck have maintained a stockpile of 300,000 doses

GOOD NEWS
We Goma now
>The Ebola virus has reached the Congolese city of Goma, home to 2 million people and a transport hub for swath of central Africa, for the first time since an epidemic began in the country nearly a year ago.
>The Congolese health ministry said a man who had arrived in the regional centre on Sunday had been quickly transported to an Ebola treatment centre.
>Authorities said they had tracked down all the passengers on the bus the man had taken to Goma from Butembo, one of the towns hardest hit by the disease.
>“Because of the speed with which the patient was identified and isolated, and the identification of all the other bus passengers coming from Butembo, the risk of it spreading in the rest of the city of Goma is small,” the health ministry said in a statement.
And on a side note:
>On Monday the health ministry said two Ebola awareness workers had been killed in the affected zone.

This is wonderful news!
>“Because of the speed with which the patient was identified and isolated, and the identification of all the other bus passengers coming from Butembo, the risk of it spreading in the rest of the city of Goma is small,” the health ministry said in a statement.
Lets hope they're wrong about that!

>The WHO said a Congolese fisherwoman travelled across the border to sell fish at Mpondwe market on July 11, where she had four vomiting incidents before returning to Congo and dying of Ebola.

Imagine if the food were infected. The other fishmongers are not being cooperative because they're afraid it will hurt business. A few dozen direct contacts have been vaccinated but there may be hundreds exposed and health services still aren't sure who all she had contact with.

I'm just about to fall asleep but apparently, the WHO now considers the outbreak to be a regional emergancy.
But they totally have it under control and no global risk guise.
I shall sleep well.

The DRC president has taken over full control over the response to the Ebola outbreak, and the health minister, Oly Ilunga Kalenga, has resigned. And there is a possibility of a new experimental vaccine being deployed, which is causing a lot of controversy.
