To us boomers, they were the only games available for a long time when PCs had no graphics to speak of.
I'm having quite a lot of fun with pic related. I started it as a tutorial exercise, but I might turn it into a real text adventure about /doomer/ life. Also, Inform is quite a comfy language. Easy enough to pick up but also very unix-y with no soydev bloat, unlike twine.

yeah, it's great for playing text adventures, character graphics games, and rougelikes with a retro feel. Also, all the effects are done through GLSL, so you can (theoretically) write your own.

I can write shaders but it's been a quite some time since I did GLSL. Text adventures never really interested me because most of those I played weren't really catching up with my expectations but since I try do things mostly via command line, this might be interesting thing to have. I wonder what my eyes will do because reading blurry text for hours isn't really something I would like to do.

Start with the IF competition winners
https://ifcomp.org/comp/2018 for last's year's entries, but all years are browsable. Modern text games have a more literary bent to them, compared to the puzzle-solving focus of classic text adventures.
halfchan had a good thread about text adventures last week, with download links for a lot of classic adventures, as well as newer games that stand out such as Violet.

Beyond that, GET LAMP is a great documentary:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRhbcDzbGSU
…and the digital antiquarian is great blog that charts out the development of narrative in gaming, with obvious focus on RPGs and adventure games. Text adventures figure heavily in the early years.

>Eventually find out I prefer heavy armor and swinging faster. Never really learned how to lockpick
>First thing I did after exiting the sewers was head to the arena, I didn't know much but I wanted the Adoring Fan by my side
>Do the Gray Prince quest, fuck around in the woods for a few days, get up to fighting the yelllow team bitch
>Start RP'ing, have my character sleep for the first time the night before I fought the Gray Prince
>Apparently this is how you level up, got to level 7
>Kill Gray Prince, walk out to meet the Adoring Fan
>Spend the next 150+ hours dicking around in forts and doing the mages guild questline
>The whole time I've been making up conversations with what my Imperial and the adoring fan would be talking about on their adventures. Wait three days at the arena literally every time he dies.
Anyone else know this feel? Anyone know any kinda old games like this that give you a noticable, but overall useless follower for me to daydream about being bros with? I kinda get that same vibe from the stalker games, meeting other stalkers on the road or having to huddle together to escape the weather.

The most doomer game of them all is the game industry. Since 2014 things have degenerated to the point where I'm no longer buying Western games, no longer buying from Steam, and no longer buying Sony games. I fully expect Nintendo to also rope itself in the near future. Even if I didn't get about all the leftist shit, this is the state of the industry now:

STALKER has a very bleak atmosphere and dangerous world, and the series' pivotal events have you skulking around alone in poorly lit abandoned underground facilities, but that just makes it all the better when you meet up with other stalker bros. If you play with some mods like Call of Chernobyl you can even ask some of them to accompany you.

I've only played Yume Nikki and Minecraft, never played the latter one with friends or mods and the vanilla experience bores me after the first week (or day).
Yume Nikki was good, I played for 3 hours at late night and then uninstalled it as soon as I kind of ran out of places to discover.
From the list you gave, the one I'm the most interested to play next would be Shadow of The colossus.

My favorite doomer character in a video game is Magus from Chrono Trigger.
"If history is to change, let it change. If the world is to be destroyed, so be it. If my fate is to die, I must simply laugh."
"The past is dead, it was all just a dream."
"The black wind howls."
"Behold, everything is at the bottom of the sea."
"This world is populated by cretins."
>summons an apocalyptic space hedgehog with black magic - just to fight it
I saved a bunch of other cool quotes on my old computer, but the hard drive got fried, so you've been spared more of my autism.
