Hey, /cyber/.
I'm doing something that uses some board-tans, and it got me thinking on what's the status of board-tans and mascots overall on 8ch. Over the next few days I'll be asking around other boards, to possibly catalogue them somewhere eventually- do you guys have one, a board-tan, a mascot?
Over a year after the board's creation, was the idea ever approached, did you reach some conclusion, do you want one, not want one? What's your shpiel, basically?
Pic unrelated, I just figure you'd like Bubblegum Crisis.

I don't know if e-cigs are /cyber/, (I don't call them that, because that's cringy as fuck, I just call them vapes) but they are higher tech than lighting a stick of dead organic material on fire and inhaling.
Adding poison to your body is definitely low life, and since vapes and cigarettes share nicotine (first widely used as an insecticide) they are both pretty low-life.
There is an unnecessary amount of arguing around vapes, and I'm not sure why.

Has to do with the proportion of the upper head to the lower head. Babies heads have a higher ratio of top to bottom head circumference. The proportion of the head produce apparent age. Vid related, just tilting a picture back and forth to change apparent proportions seems to change the age of the subject in the image.

Cyberpunk will never drop fully to that level. The closest it got was before cybergoth invented a name for themselves. Steampunk never had an ounce of substance behind it. Cyberpunk had oodles.
I do think, however, that the board would be vastly improved if the mods derezzed everyone who admits to not reading a Gibson book in their lifetime.

In Shadowrun, they used a similar haircut (not as exaggerated since the plugs were in the front) to leave some place for the data jacks.
However in Cyberpunk 2020 you could basically put your data plugs anywhere because the whole body was linked with a network of nanomachines. They even had different terms for the person with the implants depending on where they put their data plugs.

Maybe you guys should think specifically in terms of what colours you want her to have and what specific accessories (like the animal-ear-shaped augments for the head, or something), leaving freedom to choose hairstyle and some variety in clothing style to the artists so long as through colours and accessories you can recognize it's her.

>I've just been ignoring it for years, and hope to continue to.
He is complaining about mixing cyberpunk with fantasy. He is not saying Shadowrun isn't cyberpunk, just that mixing cyberpunk and fantasy is heresy to him. This doesn't mean Shadowrun isn't cyberpunk because Gibson himself said he has been ignoring it for years because he dislikes the concept, but he probably doesn't know what's inside of Shadowrun.
Honestly, Shadowrun minus the magic is cyberpunk as fuck. I prefer Cyberpunk 2020's corporation model, but that doesn't mean Shadowrun isn't cyberpunk.
There is a variant of Shadowrun called Gibsonrun where anything fantasy has been removed and it's basically Cyberpunk 2020 with a different dice system and some minor setting differences.
Furthermore, quoting Gibson as a way to win the argument reminds me of quoting Alan Kay on why any OOP language that isn't Smalltalk is shit. He might have had the idea first, but that doesn't mean it hasn't grown out of him or that he is the best at it.
Anyway, if you don't believe me when I say cyberpunk is flashy, why not fucking read Cyberpunk 2020's sourcebook and check how "Style over Substance" is one of the bases of the game?
>you're using cypherpunk as an insult
Cypherpunk and cyberpunk are just two terms related by the fact that they are both strong in technology themes and sound similar.
When you come to the cyberpunk board and start suggesting a cypherpunk mascot because "it's more cyberpunk than cyberpunk", that means you are unaware f the distinction between cyberpunk and cypherpunk, which means you are a newshazbot and/or retarded and deserve being called out on it.

Really? It is for me, a bunch of cloak-and-daggar figures conspiring in dark alleys to raid, steal from, and blow up the datacenter down the street.
I know a lot of people get their version of cyberpunk from Gibbson, but it's outdated IMO, it's the 80's version of the future, we've had plenty of new stuff since.

Or, for a more manly stance, Gogol from Cyber City Oedo 808. Only downside would be lack of high quality shots.

This is essence of Cyberpunk playing your character with the proper disaffected, cynical-yet-idealistic style. Whether youre a biker with leathered skin and metal claws, or a debutante in satin sporting the latest in designer cyberoptics, youre going to need a certain panache a certain flair, in portraying yourself. To achieve the essence of the 2000s, you need to master three concepts:
1) Style over Substance
It doesnt matter how well you do something, as long as you look good doing it. If youre going to blow it, make sure you look like planned it that way. Normally, clothes and looks dont matter in a adventure in this world, having a leather armor jacket and mirrorshades is a serious consideration.
2) Attitude is Everything
Its truth. Think dangerous; be dangerous. Think weak; be weak. Remember, everyone in the 2000s is carrying lots of lethal hardware and high-tech enhancements. They wont be impressed by you new H&K smartgun unless you swagger into the club looking like you know how to use it and are just itching for an excuse.
3) Live on the Edge
The Edge is that nebulous zone where risk takes and highriders go. On the Edge, youll risk your brouzouf, your rep, even your life on something as vague as a principle or a big score. As a cyberpunk, you want to be the action, start the rebellion, light the fire. Join great causes and fight for big issues. Never drive slow when you can drive fast. Throw yourself up against danger and take it head on. Never play too safe. Stay committed to the Edge.

I never really liked that specific design, but that's not the point. People will actively shit on ALL dyed hair even though it is something normal in original cyberpunk and neocyberpunk. Fuck, there are even literal neon rainbow hair implants in some settings, and luckily >>31013 knew how to capture that. Fuck, I wouldn't even call those shit art, I just don't like her design in general, but the IDEA behind that design is pretty good. Come to think of it, adding a bit more of hair and changing the jacket or the pants (I can't remember any cyberpunk setting where leopard patterns were a thing, but I guess there is nothing specifically against that) would make her a more than acceptable design.
The problem with all the shitposting arising from this comes from butthurt and misunderstanding from two different groups: the shazbots who don't know this is a work of fiction and automatically associate neon hair and weird hairstyles with muh SJW, and the people who think cypherpunk is synonymous of cyberpunk, respectively.
The first one is a lost case and probably just better to ignore them altogether (have you seen how they shat up the second /cyber/-tan thread? It was amazing). The second one, while I actually like cypherpunk too and think it should be discussed in /cyber/ too -amongst other things because unless we turned this board into a straight up roleplay board, it would be kill if we only talked about pure cyberpunk-, is not what cyberpunk is about. There are vast differences between cyberpunk and cypherpunk aesthetic, one of them based around flashyness and absolutely no sense of shame whatsoever, and the other one based on the complete opposite. And it's a problem because a board tan's design is based all around aesthetic, and given /cyber/ is the CYBERPUNK in allcaps and sci-fi in lowercase board, it would be dumb to focus on anything else than cyberpunk. It would be like /tg/ having a catgirl-tan because they like catgirls and sometimes talk about catgirls despite appearing in very little tabletop RPG settings.
Now that I have explained why it would be dumb for /cyber/-tan to be an edgelord dressed in only black clothing, I want to mention that although there is much more to cyberpunk to this, Cyberpunk 2020's three guidelines are a pretty good starting point to design cyberpunk main characters. Fuck, Cyberpunk 2020's implants list has a lot of cool shit you can use, specially Fashionware, and if you mix it up with Shadowrun's (lel le gag me with a spoon xD) splatted implants lists you can have pretty much everything you would desire for a cyberpunk character.
Now onto hair, which is the hottest topic around hair: pretty much any hairstyle can be cyberpunk given it's flashy, whether it is because it's dyed in unusual colors or because the hairstyle itself is out of the ordinary, or (specially) both. However, a standard black/brown hairstyle is probably more characteristic of the cypherpunk aesthetic, even though it could perfectly appear in a cyberpunk setting just like secondary characters without weird hair colors can appear in muh Chinese cartoons. Back in the 80s, when cyberpunk started being a thing, youngsters (the people who adults thought would eventually become the decadent cyberpunks) used to wear hairstyles with lots of volume, an the even more decadent literal punks (the equivalent of the raddest street gangs in any cyberpunk setting) used to wear short, dyed and specially outrageously flashy hairstyles.
Funnily enough, pic related started to be worn by female punks around that era, even though we can see it today in some low life girls and even in some original cyberpunk (old Shadowrun books have something similar for technomancers, and before you start again with the ebin Gibson meme, allow me to remind you Shadowrun is cyberpunk + fantasy, and human technomancers are 100% on the cyberpunk side) and neocyberpunk settings, and it makes lots of sense: the short hair on the left side of the head makes it easier to connect any cables to plugs located there. Cyberpunk 2020 mostly disregarded this logic thanks to being able to put plugs in any part of your body due to the nature of the neural implants, which were actually nanomachines that weaved an information network around your whole body, but if we go with a more "traditional" approach to brain implants, short hair kind of makes sense for any cyberpunk character. Considering the original /cyber/-tan design, I think that's what the author thought when making her half bald, considering she has a heavily augmented head, although there was no need to make her a complete babyhead.

Continuing with the hair, what about using a color-shift hair implant? In my opinion they are cyberpunk as fuck, pretty much the embodiment of Style over Substance, and it could appease the autism of muh degenerate hair color Anons by simply turning off the implant or changing its color to something more normal. Of course, another artist might at the same time paint her with literal rainbow-colored hair.
To satisfy cypherpunks, a synthskin implant (transparent yoctoLED array implanted across the user's skin) could be used to avoid facial recognition programs due to its ability to display any pattern and even moving patterns of light tattoos all over the body, including the face. Of course, shining like a beacon is anything but stealthy, but when everything that can be said about you is "well, it's like a walking disco ball" or "it reminds me of that neon-Colbert gif", you can consider the job done, specially if we take into account these can always be disabled.

The fact that he took the time to type out this massive post when he clearly knows far more about cyberpunk than anyone in this thread (and most people on this board) is far more than you fucking posers deserve at this point.
It was never about the quality of the original drawings; it was about the constant whining from people about the fact that the proposed mascot had dyed hair and an undercut, and little more. If it weren't for this nonsense, the discussion would have been able to continue in a fairly common thread towards a mascot that actually represents what cyberpunk is and someone who can draw better could have stepped forward.

Of course, the fact that people are actually still this mad over cyber-tan says something, when nobody on any other board actually cares about board-tans anymore. It was something fun for building board identity a year ago when people were leaving halfchan. It's irrelevant now.
But don't worry, I'll take the b8. I actually don't have many issues with your pic there, because it's well-done, and an appealing design. >>31013 is neither. There's all kinds of strawmanning going on (¥500 says that the original artist is still asspained) claiming that the only people who hate the design are all /pol/ transplants. That's simply not the case - I only ever see ironic shitposts about "degeneracy" on this board. It looks like shit. It's generic DA-tier art with fake-looking "implants".
And then people like you come along and start talking about how cyberpunk "is just fiction, gaize". Have you only looked at the picture and music threads on this board? How can you possibly be so dense? You slap a cypherpunk label on half the people who disagree with you, yet I don't see many (if any) cryptodorks hanging around here.
But do you know why, exactly, the first cyber-tan thread got shat up? Because lots of people didn't like the design. The sheer amount of butthurt and autism from the few people who did like it is what's fueling this thread.
I don't have time to reply to everything you've posted, but really, you might as well just make the board-tan cybergoth at this rate. You're citing Shadowrun (a fucking FANTASY game and setting) and a single other game meant to be over-the-top, and ignoring any and all other media for the sake of proving a point against a strawman. You've forgotten the genre's noir roots. You're even calling the father of cyberpunk a meme. I suppose Bethke was a meme, too? Do you even know who he is without looking him up?

Nobody gets mad over dark-purple-hair-that-might-as-well-be-black in anime. If it wasn't because it was made in Japan way before the SJW craze hit imageboards, I think the situation would be different.
Besides, GitS is post-cyberpunk, not really cyberpunk.
>here's all kinds of strawmanning going on (¥500 says that the original artist is still asspained) claiming that the only people who hate the design are all /pol/ transplants
There are many users who think this, but let's not act like any fucking proposal about oddly dyed neon hair or short hairstyles weren't met with "de-geee-neee-ratttte", "SJW!" or "it's dyke hair" arguments. Hell, even >>33337

These are definitely not ironic. The rest of the posts mentioning at least one of the three magic words could be considered funposting even though they really meant that with their complaints.
Not to mention half of the people in that thread don't seem to understand what cyberpunk is about and outright suggested sci-fi shit, but oh well.
>Have you only looked at the picture and music threads on this board? How can you possibly be so dense?
http://cyberpunk.asia/countdown.php?lng=us
I bothered doing the median percentage for you. We're at 34% cyberpunk.
>b-but they are made up percentages!
And pictures and music are anecdotal evidence at best. Your point? Will you demand for Gibson to come out and announce "CYBERPUNK IS NOW!" out of his lungs?
My point when talking about cyberpunk being only a work of fiction is that it doesn't matter if it's degenerate. That's the beauty about fiction, because it just doesn't exist and you can do whatever in it. It doesn't matter if /cyber/-tan is a Black Lace junkie who is a turbodyke that fucks a new playbeing every day because she doesn't exist.
Furthermore, if we go with the whole "cyberpunk is our near future!" thing, then that means SJW trends and aesthetics are part of the future too. If your complaint is about degeneracy of society in cyberpunk then good luck, you found the wrong board and fandom because that's exactly what cyberpunk is about.
Not to mention that if you insist on cyberpunk being about reality, we are more likely to enter into the cypherpunk-only era than into cyberpunk. No augments, no neons; just guys wearing dark trenchcoats meeting in a dark alleyway to exchange encrypted jumpers to avoid being by the all-seeing eye of Sauron the government.
>yet I don't see many (if any) cryptodorks hanging around here.
Because crypto is very complicated and only a few people actually know the ins and outs of it. That said, the sentiment of the cypherpunk community (install Gentoo, shazbot) and the aesthetics of it are very present in /cyber/ if only because most people here learned about cyberpunk because of (probably the new) DooSex, which uses a completely cypherpunk aesthetic.
Cypherpunk is all fine and dandy, but what I want to say with all this text is that it's not cyberpunk.
>But do you know why, exactly, the first cyber-tan thread got shat up?
The first thread didn't got shit, just a few people that weren't convinced about the hair but didn't go full anal about it. It was the second thread where the hair autists came in.
Looking at the first thread, the artist who drew the only fucking semi-decent drawings we have of /cyber/-tan said he chose that hairstyle because it's the most practical for data plugs, but that there were other equally practical (and more fashionable, that said) hairstyles that could be used. Pic very related.
My favourite ones are the two bottom ones. First one is a reminder that Japanese culture is omnipresent in original cyberpunk (in neocyberpunk it would be Chinese if we took the "it's us but in the future!" approach), and the second one is a hairstyle straight outta 80s. First one is also fairly good, specially with the shades.

Cybergoth ain't cyberpunk, or at least not what cyberpunk is about. Fuck, your picture would suit more a Mad Max/post-apoc movie if it wasn't because you can't find any other colors than shit brown and yellow piss on those.
>You're citing Shadowrun (a fucking FANTASY game and setting)
You didn't read the spoilers, did you?
If you had bothered reading about Shadowrun, you would have known it is a cyberpunk universe that got fantasy added into the mix. Both elements are mostly separated, reinforced by the fact that you are pretty much forced to either play a fantasy or a cyberpunk character.
It has the megacorps, it has the street gangs, it has the runners, it has the low life districts/cities, it has the implants, the net, the tech, that fucking "everything is going out to kill you" vibe… how the fuck can you say it's not cyberpunk when you can very easily remove all fantasy from it and come up with a variant called Gibsonrun gee, why could it be called like that!? that a lot of people like?
It's dumb to outright mock and ridicule any mention of Shadowrun just because the game contains fantasy elements, specially when I was specifically mentioning the cyberpunk-only elements.
>and a single other game meant to be over-the-top
>1st turn
>Use pretty much any fucking assault rifle against an enemy
>It dies in 90% of the cases unless it's wearing really heavy armor
>"b-but it has stat-boosting implants!"
WELL CYBERPUNK HAS AUGMENTATIONS, BOY! Are you sure you haven't mistaken /cyber/ for another board?
Furthermore, there aren't many other cyberpunk RPG games. Sure, there is GURPS Cyberpunk, but it's more a set of rules than an outright setting. Don't even get me started with Eclipse Phase.
>and ignoring any and all other media for the sake of proving a point against a strawman.
I see you are mentioning Gibson. You mean the same Gibson who described characters with flashy multicolour outfits and loadsa chrome? :^)
Or maybe you mean Snow Crash, which is balls to the wall in terms of craziness and is so over the top only Cyberpunk 2020 can wish to be half as ridiculous as it is?
>You're even calling the father of cyberpunk a meme.
I'm not calling him a meme, I am calling his comments on Shadowrun being posted whenever Shadowrun is mentioned a meme.
Furthermore, all he said about Shadowrun is:
>a) He doesn't like the idea of mixing up fantasy and cyberpunk
>b) For that reason, he hasn't read it
Just because he wrote Neuromancer and popularized the cyberpunk genre doesn't mean he is always right, you know? Even he admits he is speaking from ignorance when commenting about Shadowrun, so if it was already a logical fallacy to take his word as an objective fact, it is only worse to take him seriously when everything he said about it amounts to nothing.

All right, back the fuck up nigga. I played a 4e campaign for three months in college as a street samurai elf obsessed with motorcycles. I put about 15 hours into Dragonfall before I got bored with the shit combat, and have probably 7 hours in HK.
It's great for what it does - a mixture of two nerdy things transplanted onto tabletop (or cRPG) in a way that makes for a fantastic, somewhat goofy heist game. It was written to be serious, but that's one of its biggest failings, in my opinion as a grognard. And sure, you can pick-and-choose the cyberpunk elements out of there, and some people even homebrew it into a purely cyberpunk game. But that's not how it was built. Citing it as a basis for a board-tan is a terrible idea.
>cyberpunk 2020
>because these combat mechanics are high-lethality, the game is srs bznss
It's written more seriously than shadowrun, that's for sure, but we're talking about a setting that has a rock star class and a stat for coolness.
>WELL CYBERPUNK HAS AUGMENTATIONS, BOY! Are you sure you haven't mistaken /cyber/ for another board?
When did I say it doesn't? I absolutely think cyber-tan should have augs.
>there aren't many other cyberpunk RPGs
Tabletop RPGs, you mean. So what are you saying, that we can only take inspiration from tabletop?
>Gibson
I already explained why Molly gets a pass. The next flashy character in Neuromancer would probably be Riviera, who's batshit insane, and does all of his flashiness through holographs. Which is actually a damned good idea that we should steal for cyber-tan, maybe even combine it with >>33399. Cyber-tan is a somewhat ugly, over-augmented girl who projects holographs out of one eye that look like an idea, stylized, attractive 2d grill.
So what, is Case flashy and chrome and over-the-top, in his leather jacket, jeans, and t-shirt? Maybe Ratz, with his dirty pink arm?
>Or maybe you mean Snow Crash, which is balls to the wall in terms of craziness and is so over the top only Cyberpunk 2020 can wish to be half as ridiculous as it is?

>memes
>I don't like this quote, so even though it's only shown up a few times and is relatively obscure, I'll call it a meme!
Of course he doesn't like it. Not only did they pretty much steal ideas directly from him, but he writes serious fiction, not some mashup of Middle Earth + Chiba City.
But it's not even about him being right, it's about where to stand on the scale of aesthetic vs. reality, and that's really what this argument has boiled down to - since you refuse to believe that people might consider the early concepts to simply be shitty art. We're not even talking about cyber-tan anymore, we're talking about the primary thing that divides the board even today.
Look, I get where you're coming from. I like the aesthetic of cyberpunk, or what's generally accepted to be cyberpunk. If I didn't, I'd just stay on /tech/. But cyberpunk has always been grounded in reality, or at the very least, highly believable predictions of the future (another place where Gibson excelled). You can't strip all the substance away. Otherwise you get steampunk - just glue some gears on it and slap the label on before you throw it up on etsy, so some fat chick in a poorly-fitting corset can take selfies at a con holding it up and going "SQUEEEEE" while scrawny betas in Dr. Who costumes or top hats fawn over her. I don't want to have to describe cyberpunk in the same way, just with LEDs instead of gears.

If your complaint is about degeneracy of society in cyberpunk then good luck, you found the wrong board and fandom because that's exactly what cyberpunk is about.
You are forgetting that for the SJW, tattoos and pastel hair is a sign of "non-conformity" and "anti-patriarchy." Which means, conforming to their fashion stylings is a moral obligation. No, they are not aware of the irony.
As such, in the near future of cyberpunk, pastel hair and tattoos can be assumed to be the mainstream or thereabouts thing. As such, it can be said that punk has now become a vapid and cultureless consumer product, that may indeed worm it's way into the very halls of the machine it originally raged against.
Chummers, I'm sad to say, but classic punk aesthetic is now kitsch.
So, for sub-cultural signaling to function, there needs to be differentiation. Something that acts as the barrier that divides the sub-culture from the mainstream. One possible route could be to fully embrace the kitsch, but then one does run the risk of becoming a mere hipster. It occurs to me, that hipsters are the result of failing to become a trendsetter.
Perhaps going to the roots of the punk movement could shed some light on this conundrum?
Punk originated from the working classes, so what would a salariman/labourer and part time petty criminal look in 30-40 years time?

>You don't see /pol/ elements flipping over animu with dyed hair now, do you?
Canonically, they haven't died hair. They were born with it.
Some people in /pol/ may argue that anime is degenerate and all that jack, but for simplicity's sake let's assume they are just ironic shitposters.
I personally think /pol/ simply shrugs off anything about anime because they are already used to it, and because they know "the Jews fear the samurai" and all that jack. In some sense, they are sure cute anime girls aren't supposed to be SJW even though they have SJW hair. However, this changes the moment you apply it to western media.
Vi and Jinx were both slightly affected by this, mainly because they (specially Jinx) look like giant tumblrites and in some way, designed to pander to those demographics. However, one of the most recent examples of this was the female Heavy of Overwatch.
Yes, she is a fat/muscly woman with a modern hair cut (not even full on "degenerate") and neon pink hair. Each one of the pores in her skin screams "dyke" and /v/pol/ rightly called her so, but then some other Anon shooped out the color of her hair from pink to blonde, and everyone almost unanimously agreed it not only looked much better, but also like an actual soldier they could get along with.
It's definitely the hair color.
>Are you actually autistic? You really thought cyber/7709/#18008 wasn't just ironic shitposting by people who disliked the design?
Follow the thread two or three replies ahead. It's stated in the parenthesis that he was shitposting, but he really meant so.
>unquantified percentages
I explained why it was bullshit. About as bullshit as claiming cyberpunk is now because of some interesting photos.

>cyberpunk is in the future so it's ok to make our board-tan an SJW even though it totally has nothing to do with SocJus, that was just filthy /pol/ shitposters shitposting unironically
Now let's be clear here. In cyberpunk you can find some characters who may fit nowadays' definition of "normal", but is cyberpunk really about them?
Cyberpunk is degenerate. If I had to say, "technology" would be cyberpunk's main theme, immediately followed by "degeneracy" as the closest secondary theme. Technology without degeneracy will get you a standard sci-fi novel or a run of the mill space opera, but you need to add that "spice" to actually give it the cyberpunk charm.
My point basically was that if you want to portray the embodiment of cyberpunk you can't make Christina with some minor implants because that would be missing the point completely.

>realistic
>realistic means dressing in a black hoodie with black sweat pants and black sneakers to "blend in" even though that would make you stick out like a sore thumb nowadays
I have yet to see a cyberpunk setting where such a look is considered normal, specially considering futuristic literature has always depicted fashion getting progressively weirder over time.
We could always go for the Blando Dullman route I guess, but where's the fun in that? It would be more or less like using Lain as our mascot: not original, not cyberpunk (no really; although I may get why some people consider DooSex or GitS to be cyberpunk, but I can't understand why Lain is considered cyberpunk when it's just technology plus lolis and some philosophical wankery thrown on it) and only easily recognizable because of a specific art style.
Cypherpunk may be a real "philosophy of life" in regards to crypto, but extrapolating its values and teachings to aesthetics, what we get is exactly what people are asking for /cyber/-tan: blending in, not being easily recognizable, etc.
>crypto is haaaaaaaaard
Is wanking about how good your full disk encryption is difficult? Not at all. Is actually talking about crypto and its implementation hard? Yes, which is why not many people know about producing crypto and not just consuming crypto.
Crypto consumer threads are also pretty interesting, but there is just so much you can talk about them. Once someone compiles a guide on how to fully secure your system, discussion is pretty much dead until someone else comes up with another guide on how to share encrypted content, and that's pretty much about it.
/g/punk threads eventually became FUCKO threads, and as you can see they are pretty much a circlejerk to see which Anon has the most paranoid termite-based setup.
>this atrocious art is ok

I agree that you always get better results when running stupid SR campaigns (the "Pink Mohawk"), but that's not what I meant. However, since it was written seriously and then turned out to look goofy because of two things that maybe shouldn't have been mixed, that also means the cyberpunk part of it is also meant to be serious.
I would say citing the only "valid" part of SR is fair game, considering it is serious and fairly good. Had I been quoting it to argue making /cyber/-tan an adept I would understand your frustration regarding this topic, but I didn't.

>It's written more seriously than shadowrun, that's for sure, but we're talking about a setting that has a rock star class and a stat for coolness.
COOL is often quoted as COOL/WILL by the core book. It is explained kind of vaguely and sometimes even implied to be related to how rad you are, but I have always interpreted it as how easy it is for the character to keep its cool in dangerous situations, which makes them look cooler in consequence.
Rockerboys might be kind of stupid, but I see nothing wrong with them. It was written in the 80s, where music was the big thing and youngsters loved rock. A lot of old cyberpunk fiction has this small "problem" of looking too retro because the authors didn't know how to extrapolate trends well into the future, but in my opinion it adds a special kind of charm.
The only thing I will admit that makes Cyberpunk 2020 over-the-top is how fucked up everything is. As in, way more than other settings: median lifespan is 30 years because most people get murdered before then, corporate wars devolve into full on nuclear warfare, violent street gangs are an everyday thing and there are even gangs dedicated to murder for the sake of murdering, some division of the police are paid to patrol highways and genocide Nomads, etc.
>But cyberpunk has always been grounded in reality
Bueno.
If you want to design /cyber/-tan based on what the future may become based on today's point of view, why the hell are you so against using oddly colored hair? Such a thing is increasingly becoming popular, so it wouldn't be dumb to think having short neon hair would be a way of blending in in the future.
Following modern trends we can also see fashion sense is repeating itself for a while. 80s aeshtetics are becoming more popular nowadays, which is probably caused due to nostalgiafagging boomers trying to resurrect their youth. If we were to resurrect our youth, the future would be more or less like today: people listening to Skrillex, augmented thugs dressing like NBA superstars with ugly baseball caps and loadsa bling bling, lots of rap everywhere, Tokyo-style giant LED displays in every street (which could work as a replacement to neon), flat design fucking everywhere…
Furthermore, since the 20s people have started to become more and more shameless. Following this trend would mean everyone would be dressing in skimpy clothing in a few years.
This means the future will still be fairly flashy unless an unlikely mental wankery scenario happens, which is either /pol/ redpilling all people worldwide and white Christian neatly-dressed /cyber/-tan wouldn't be that unlikely, or people suddenly realising privacy is important, which could mean dressing in black total look would indeed be a way to blend in.

My dream /cyber/-tan would be flashy, with lots of fashionware that could be doubled as practical cyberware with some smart ideas, as well as actually practical cyberware, of course.
Touching the controversial topic of hair colours, although probably any colour would work well given it fits the overall color scheme of the drawing and the hairstyle, I specially think any shade of blue or neon pink would be best, but it's not like these have any justification other than personal taste.
For example, in >>33352 's pic, first one would probably work better with darker shades, second one could work with red or green, I am not even sure about what is the third one trying to represent, fourth one could work with more natural colours such as browns or gingers, and third one would definitely be best with lighter shades of any colour so it can contrast with her makeup.
It all boils down to what kind of character concept you have. A street punk or a rockstar are always going to be flashier than a corporate businessman or a cop, for example. Likewise, netrunners/hackers might choose to dress like edgy fucks because like their desktops they are as dark as their soul, or simply disregard fashion sense and instead get something closer to contemporary urban style, with comfortable clothing.
As I said, it depends on what you want /cyber/-tan to be. If you want to focus a bit more on the social implications of cyberpunk, a good "profession" for her would be street punk/edgerunner/corporate assassin. Likewise, if you think the tech side is more interesting, you might want to portray her as a hacker or as a techhead.
Street punks would likely look the flashiest, just followed by edgerunners/mercenaries that may as well just be elite street punks. Neon colored and/or armored (might be stealth-armored) clothing, possible actual lights in their clothes, weird hairstyles, lots of fashionware for the sake of fashion, combat implants (cyberlimbs, reflex boosters, optical implants for anti-flare or night vision, natural armored skin, NANOMACHINES SON, data jacks for connecting to devices, etc) designed to kick corp ass, a possible druggie/party junkie look with bags under their eyes, weapons (preferably easy to carry ones, unless right before performing a run), maybe more skimpy clothing if a plain street punk, shades…
In comparison, hackers don't really need the same implants as a street punk. They are unlikely to engage in street brawls and therefore being quad cyber amputees doesn't make much sense. They might still need the reflex boosting implants, the data links… but things such as armor and armored skin are completely unnecessary. Instead, brain implants to improve their cognitive capabilities, optical implants to avoid eye strain (specially for techies, since hackers could simply jam it in into the cyberspace and render it directly in their minds), zooming in or projecting HUDs on them and lots of gadgets would probably be the norm.
If I knew how to draw I would probably draw some sort of anti-corp edgerunner, but you should just draw whichever concept seduces you the most. Nothing good can come from drawing out of obligation.

Because the default/base human form is women.
They also give birth and thus are "creative" forces.
Most users are male.
Woman bodies flow better, men are more angular.
We can have a woman doing roles from both genders without much complaints, having a non-robot-ish male mascot could lead to complaints from anons.

we could work with that. Maybe set up a poll to decide what kind of profession she should have. That way we can at least figure out how crazy the design should be. A -tan embodies a board, the topic, it's general opinion and partly what the Anon's of said board are.
I think we're over doing it with all this color and augs. I think the best way to make a -tan for this board is one that looks dreary, tired, angry and mentally almost at the breaking point. It doesn't have to be this sketch per say but something around this look could seal the deal entirely. Besides, isn't a mega city with tyrannical CEOs ruling over it with a mortality rate bigger than current day Russia suppose to feel depressing? Why should /cyber/-tan have so many colors and over done haircuts with augs everywhere? If any augs should be on her body, they should look homemade because buying from a business (which are already bought by bigger businesses within the city) would still be supporting corporate.
A cyberpunk world is not a colorful one, it's dull, it's overly protected with surveillance for corporate, it has the worse kind of people born out of it's seedy underbelly, and overall it's shit. It only makes sense that /cyber/-tan should look like she has been through that shit. The only thing that should be schway are the little things in cyberspace that keeps her going on a computer in a run down apartment in a abandoned building that she's set up for herself. /cyber/-tan's very appearance should always look like she had a hard life with only few exceptions to smile.

Short, practical hair. Loose fitting clothing. Light shoes and fingerless gloves.
I think that not going overboard on the design is key. There's nothing less schway than an aug that has no practical application.
I think she should have subtle augs, perhaps disguised as tattoos. One that serves as a commlink between her fellow runners. One that sharpens her reflexes. Maybe she could have bionic eyes to enhance her eyesight or even project a HUD.

I think enhanced eyes are impractical if there's a connection involved, since it gives the person an extreme vulnerability if hacked.
Remember, the greatest security from hackers is not needing the hackable technology for important things or never having it at all.

OP here, well, seems I chose a good time to check back on this thread specifically. Of the threads I opened back then, this and the /leftypol/ ones were my favourite. I like seeing discussion and the creative process occur.
I'm liking the sketch being currently made. If I may give some random suggestions…
>focus maybe on the headphones as a graphic element- as I mentioned before, something where she may change her hairdo and outfit as the artist pleases, but if he's got the headphones right, it's recognizably /cyber/-tan
>In the same way, maybe decide on a specific colour palette beyond black-and-white- the first sketch had pale beiges. A bit cliché, but maybe some sort of green accent to go with the board's theme?
>The entire argument of hair colours, in-world-realism vs off-world-realism, if pink hair would fit in or not, etc- consider above that, a touch, branding. Maybe in a future projected from our culture, the board-tan you guys got going right now would stick out for NOT having neon hair, which can be either a good or a bad thing, dunno.
Additionally, some personal aesthetic touches, coming from a shazbot who's spent his life watching cyberpunk stuff but not investing enough into getting entirely into it (IE I've not even read Gibson, something I intend to solve when I start reading novels again soon)
- Technologically, I think the 80's and 90's have the ideal cyberpunk aesthetic. Which is kinda cliché now, the whole vaporwave-whatever "windows 98-macintosh-MSX-mechanical keyboard-crt tvs" look, but I think it could be something to keep in mind somehow as I feel it's become a very ingrained image- I can picture a cyberpunk run-down giant-buildings oppressing-government wet-streets disease-everywhere world without touchscreens, but not without diskettes. Personally, at least.
- >>33715 reminds me, today's culture (and subsequently the near future's) mines the 80's, but the 80's were just mining the 50's and going crazy with it. So maybe some 50's inspiration'd help?

Pink Mohawk is a term used in Shadowrun to describe non-serious or over-the-top runs. They often have weird characters, like a guy covered in penile implants or an old lady in a wheelchair that has been modified with rocket launchers and the likes. It's the counterpart to Black Trenchcoat, which is all about serious characters doing serious things.
However, I wrote it thinking about a style that is not averse to using colors other than black and characters that don't mind making a scene.
I don't like the original /cyber/-tan design, but things like the color-shifting hair and clothing or jazzy hairstyles could be considered part of the "flashy cyberpunk" aesthetic.
In contrast, Black Trenchcoat would be about blending in and "looking normal", which in the future it seems to mean "dressing like a character taken straight out of The Matrix".

Pink Mohawk then, it is. I agree that she should be a hacker, but being a teachhead doesn't mean you can't enjoy being fabulous. Hacker often meet up at hacker spaces after all, so they do get some kind of social contact and ricing has always been part of hacker culture so I can't see why they wouldn't care about looking cool.
Now, for the next question, retro or modern? Retro will probably rely more on black leather jackets, pilot shades, chrome paint, outrageous hairstyles taken straight out of Jem and the Holograms… while more modern cyberpunk would rely on hoodies, different kind of glasses/shades, metallized color or carbon fibre/graphene patterns, and straight short haircuts or even, yes, why not, "degenerate" hair.
To speed up things a bit, what about implants and gadgets? What does a hacker need to do her job? And what does she need to look cool among her comrades?
I personally don't mind about either retro or modern, but I think she does need some cyberglasses like Edward's, neuralware to jack in straight into cyberspace with a data plug and a cool deck. The rest is optional, but maybe some cool cyberears to listen to music, light tattoos, neon fashion and color-shifting contact lenses or hair would be pretty cool.

Chrome is schway as hell, but I would rather have her have it in other implants. Chromed cyberarms look pretty cool too, but I don't know.
What about the pants? I thought about tight, somewhat short black jeans (below knee, above thighs) with some green and purple details too. I also wonder if she should wear a shirt at all, or just show her midriff and also her infinity bra whenever the jacket is unbuttoned. I always thought nets looked pretty sexy but I don't know if cyberpunk is the time and place for them.
As for shoes, boots seem like they would look best, but I would try to stay away from combat boots if the rest of her outfit makes her show some skin.

Generally speaking, the key to making a successful board-tan design is usually to find a good balance between reflecting the interests and idiosyncrasies of the board and making the design simple enough that artists at a wide variety of skill levels can draw the character easily. To that end, the designs in >>30793 and >>31013 aren't likely to work out that well due to having too many little details, though the latter option could work if the design was simplified. >>33195 is a simpler design, but isn't that good from an aesthetic standpoint, and >>33470 got an initial positive reaction, but people seem to have lost interest in it.
It looks like a lot of the pieces are already in place for creating a good board-tan for /cyber/, it's just a matter of fitting them together in a way that everyone can agree with.

I thought that the focus of cyberpunk was a high level of technology and low life.
Get a simple design that focuses on the low life. A hoodie, ragged jeans, cheap sneakers, maybe a leather jacket for cheap protection. She should be pale, but the skin color is not really relevant.
Then, add the cyber details. The staple things are good, like a faux mohawk with port holes on the bald spot, laser eyes, maybe a respirator. Add one extra cybernetic part, like an arm or a leg for the sake of simplicity, and an electronic gadget, preferibly wired into her.

Bumping this. I'm making something that I'd like /cyber/ to be represented in, and I'd rather have a complete interpretation of /cyber/-tan from the board itself, rather than building one from the pieces here on my own, being a relative outsider.

It's been two years and /cyber/ still doesn't have a board-tan. Not even sure how many of users from the old days are still around. The post before yours is actually replying to someone from exactly a year ago.
This might sound greedy, but I don't think it makes sense for /cyber/ to have a single board-tan. You're looking for a "complete interpretation of /cyber/-tan" but if there's anything the past two years have shown it's that nobody can agree on what a /cyber/-tan would be, and that's probably for the best.
In any case, I think you have a lot of material from this thread to work with, eager to see what you can come up with. From my perspective, it's better to just stick to your own guns and throw out a design you think is cool; everybody else can just argue about why they think it's shit after the fact.

It should be laughing man, you can shoop it on to anyone, any pic, easy to meme it, in the spirit of cyberpunk, cyberpunk doesn't need a fixed construct for a tan.

Anyone who isn't a classical-Anarchist (socially liberal anti-capitalist) is going to be very out of place on a board dedicated to /cyber/punk, a genre basically centered around being socially liberal and anti-capitalist. Why don't you just stick to your own board? You guys hate immigration yet you're the quickest to emigrate to more liberal boards once your retarded right-wing boards get shit up by low-IQ posters.

The /pol/tard is immunized against all dangers: one my call him a racist, misogynist, nazi, stormfag, it all runs off him like water off a raincoat; but call him a /pol/tard and you will be astonished at how he recoils, how he posts meme pictures, how he suddenly shrinks back: "I've been found out."

Stormfags should be globally derezzed since they always end up plotting to silence other people and their main hobby is being mendacious.

Lol, how oblivious and arrogant does one have to be to come to such conclusions? Truly, leftists are the only scum that can autofellate itself with ideology creating it out of thin air.
>more liberal boards
Facebook and reddit are your liberal boards, faggot. Choke on a tranny dick.

Nah, it's centered around the future being an absolute shithole ruled by technocratic authoritarians from all ideologies- whether it be the desire for profit, communism, fascism, theocracy or the like. Being against that doesn't mean you're constrained into some shitty ideology that keeps failing, and making the /pol/acks and stormfags look sane in comparison.

Cyberpunk has always been fairly nihilistic, in that sense. A "cyberpunk" (that is, a main character in some sort of cyberpunk media) rarely is a political activist. More often than not, it's someone who is too busy trying to survive in an apathetic world to even think about changing stuff for the better for everyone else. Cyberpunk usually also deals with desensitization and detachment of society or humanity, so expecting a "cyberpunk" to give a fuck about anyone but himself is stupid. Fuck, if this were D&D, your average citizen (and most "heroes") in a cyberpunk society would range between true neutral and chaotic neutral; good characters would be rare as hell and generally being fucked from all sides, and evil characters would make the majority of the elite population, as well as many low life punks. Reminds me of /v/ surprising themselves of everyone in the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer being so mean to each other for no reason at all. Yeah well, it's always been like that.
No, nobody gives a fuck about being an anarchist who will change the world to be honest, that reeks of optimist dystopian young adult fiction, which can actually be cyberpunk, but far from a representative of the genre, because they are too busy trying not to die. Besides, there is no point in trying when the roots of power are so big and sturdy. A bunch of guys with shitty weapons overthrowing a whole system (not just a government, a whole system) is a nice power fantasy, but this cyberpunk is generally no power fantasy.
Sucks? Fuck yes it does. Welcome to cyberpunk, baby. Learn to love it or get the fuck out.
