In the bible it says that only Noah and his family survived the great flood. Is it possible that this is only hyperbole and the great flood was exaggerated?

I ask because in Numbers 13:32-33 the bible describes Israelite spies finding the descendants of the Nephilim.

My first thought was it was just Israelite spies were exaggerating to avoid conflict, however, this is unlikely as the bible itself says:

"he descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim".

How could there be decedents of the Nelphilim on the earth in the time of Moses if no one but Noah and his family survived the flood?

Simple; giants could be born of non-giants if they had the ancestry for it.

>I ask because in Numbers 13:32-33 the bible describes Israelite spies finding the descendants of the Nephilim.

Those (((spies))) were probably the ones making the hyperbole and probably lying. I looked at a commentary (Timothy Ashley's of NICOT) and the author said it's most likely the spies themselves fabricating this, as while the Israelites would have known about the Nephilim, they only now have meet the Anak and would not have truly known their origins.

>this is unlikely as the bible itself says: "[t]he descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim".

The LXX doesn't have this gloss, and translations do you a disservice by adding parentheses as if it were certain that this phrase was a later editorial addition rather than the (((spies'))) making crap up.

>In the bible it says that only Noah and his family survived the great flood.

1 Peter 3:20 says this, giving their number as eight souls.

>Is it possible that this is only hyperbole and the great flood was exaggerated?

The fact that only those eight survived? That's not hyperbole. But what people say outside of scripture may be hyperbole.

>I ask because in Numbers 13:32-33 the bible describes Israelite spies finding the descendants of the Nephilim.

The spies in Numbers 13:32-33 are unreliable witnesses. The fact they say the sons of Anak are nephilim does not mean that they are. All this does tell us is that they were aware of the prophecies contained in Genesis, not that they were accurate.

>My first thought was it was just Israelite spies were exaggerating to avoid conflict,

They weren't exaggerating in that they met giants, because later on Og the king of Bashan would fight them. But they may likely have been mistaken to suppose these were the same ancestry as the giants mentioned in Genesis 6.

I should also be careful to note that it is unclear whether any of these giants were even considered men or whether they were properly beasts. There are many instances of "living beings" or beasts conversing with man throughout scripture.

Noah's sons were genetically pure, the or wives were not, so corrupt genes had the potential to be passed into the lineage of all three sons. As it turns out, corrupt genes were passed on through and from the wives of Japeth and Ham. Shem's offspring, the line through which Jesus was born, was pure.

The LXX never says they are descendants of Nephilim. Besides, the whole Israelite Spy story is supposed to be a treatise against seeing is believing faith. While 10 of the 12 spots gave a bad news report in order not to fight for israel, Joshua and Caleb stayed string in there faith, knowing that God would protect them and give them the land of milk and honey.

Noah's family had the blood of giants - simple enough. I advise you not to be fooled by poorly photoshopped images of Godzilla-sized skeletons. Remember that Goliath was at most nine feet tall and that Og's bed was about thirteen feet long (he may have been considerably shorter than this seeing as king would likely have a bed big enough to really lounge around in). All this nonsense about giants being some sort of hybrid offspring of angels and men comes from Enoch which was not included in the Bible for good reason.

There was a mass extinction event 12000 to 13000 years ago. The humans had an iron age technology but were not widespread. So it is conceivable a flood wiped them all out. This is more probable if humans were confined to one island perhaps Antarctica. In addition 6000 years is not enough time for humans to have spread all over the world and diverged genetically as much as they have but 12000 years is.

I have heard that the "sons of God" has been used to describe angels in the Bible several times

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

>Hebrews 1:5

For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

The Bible never says that angels are the sons of God. It actually says quite the opposite.

We don't know for sure but leviathan and behemoth may be antediluvian creatures who survived, other creatures may have survived as well.
