Hello brothers (and sisters? heh) in Christ. Something has been bugging me lately. To what extent should we Christians involve ourselves in "fun and entertainment"? What can we do "for fun" that is still Christ-like and glorifying God? I've been having a slight existential crisis about it lately.

as long as it does not infringe on your beliefs, values, dignity, and time, you can safely have as much fun as you can.

This is a good answer

Sin is a blacklist not a whitelist. Everything is permissible if it can be done in faith and not breaking any instruction from the Lord.

I don't know how to answer this without being a total hypocrite.

We all look for happiness, but tend to look for happiness in false things. Happiness is found in the adoration of God.

Christians shouldn't consoome.

Most men in history didn't have access to much consooming, anyway.

Sounds socialistic to me.

You know Marcion and the radical montanists each taught similar asceticism. They suppose to ascend to a quasi-godhood through this self-denial. But the only people they are playing is themselves. Nowadays climate change teaches the same things. But this time under a pseudo-scientific, Lysenkoist veil.

As for my take on it, radical asceticism is just as futile as is rampant hedonism. The worst part however is that, all too often, both go hand in hand, one for the outside world to see while the other is going on in secret in the shadows. We see that with sodomite priests being shuffled from one place to another.

Only a Babylonian would question the validity of fun because they genetically lack the capacity for a sense of humor. They will never have a civilization again.

I just meant that entertainment like watching TV is not as necessary as one might think since most people never did while having more than enough fun.

There is nothing radical about that.

Oh of course not. Television is full of propaganda from the progressive-socialist parties. They are literally the ones telling you if you a "green" life and donate money to a green fund, that they will miraculously fix the weather. They are literally the ones saying consumption is the sin against "mother earth," and that "preservation of resources", "solving global inequality," evolution, abortion, teaching that we are all animals, that there is no image of God, and keeping the population of "the uneducated masses" under 500 million, is all the one true path to enlightenment. The television teaches all those things, and it lectures us about how "sacrifices have to be made" to achieve this utopian vision.

All of those things comes from television, in particular Hollywood television. What it really is is no different in true essence than communism, however. You see the same level of hypocrisy from the elites. They wish to cripple the economy that is outside of the crony system and crush the middle class this time using green funds and the Paris climate accord. They are pure evil, actually wish to make the people suffer, to make their economy crash and destroy their jobs so they become reliant on the big-brother state that tyrannically dictates every single aspect of their life. And they cannot argue or fight back because their jobs are taken away by climate regulations, regulations which simply move the production offshore to China, which if anything makes the climate worse, because in China they do not follow any regulations at all. The elites who sold out their country for a piece of the pie and the Chinese benefit, while everyone else loses.

I've been having the same thoughts lately, and its been freaking me out. I scoured some sites and most will say something akin to "Love and worship God every moment of every day. Nothing else matters or is worth your time." I'm a writer, I code, read books, play video games, usually RPGs, and exercise. I like to think I'm not a consoomer (I spend more time being active, working, or creating than I do playing vidya anymore) and I try not to let material or earthly things push God out of my life. I'll usually contemplate morality and think of how Christ's teachings can apply to what I'm playing/reading. If I'm engaging in some work that involves sinful subject matter, I know enough to differentiate fantasy from reality and won't be inspired by it or anything foolish like that. However, according to these sources, I need to go cold turkey entirely since hobbies that aren't themed around God = sin. I strongly disagree, and now I'm feeling stressed beyond belief since, if I'm wrong, this effectively means both myself and virtually everyone I know are bound for Hell. Am I in constant violation of the first commandment?

Define "fun".

Drinking? Fine. Christ drank, but he definitely wasn't an alcoholic and neither should you be. Casual sex? You already know the answer. TV? Why would you willing subject yourself to that garbage?

Look, fun doesn't have to equal indulging in extreme decadence and hedonism. I read, study foreign languages, talk with friends, look for good investments, occasionally indulge in some good wine, and take pleasure in my work. Wholesomeness has a quality all its own, and if you're looking for that kind of thing then consider participating more in your local (non-heretical) church functions and develop deeper relationships with your immediate friend circle.

This.

Good things are good and were made to be good. But they are not God. They become soul-destructive (which is what it means to be a sin) when they take an unnatural importance in your life.

The joy that is the reward of the long, hard cultivation of good habits is very fun, once you've cultivated them to the point that they are no longer difficult to maintain. They are tremendously fun if they are shared with friends.

We all have our cross to bear in this world, to repent of our sins.

We're all to fond of fun and hedonism.

Men have found God in many funny places. If one of your hobbies doesn't directly mention God or the Church, that doesn't mean it does not glorify Him in some capacity.

Constantly asking yourself "am I doing this for God?" is a good form of self-reflection. Your exercise is wholesome and maintains the Temple of the Holy Spirit. Your work is wholesome if it cultivates servitude and obedience. Making bonds with friends over shared interests like RPGs is wholesome because you never know when they might be in need of someone like you for other reasons.

I knew a pastor who compared having "False Gods" to having drugs in your life. In essence, the question is, can you live without these things? If no, then they are unhealthy for your soul. Incidentally, this is why I like the practice of Lent, which forces you to confront such attachments directly.

Correct. Every man must pick up his cross and follow Christ.

Now what did Christ mean when he said "my yoke is easy, and my burden is light"

Thank you, anon. Just the other day - and I know this is normally in bad practice - but I decided to delay receiving my ashes by a couple of hours to watch a livestream with a buddy of mine. I mentioned that I'd be going to mass soon, and he was surprised to hear that I would be going so late, and I explained that it was to attend the Ash Wednesday mass at my local church. He had completely forgotten to receive his ashes, and this interaction reminded him of his duties. I believe its interactions like these where we can cultivate God's teachings and blessings to others even in situations that may seem predominantly secular. Your post resonates with me and grants me confidence in my work and activities. May God bless you.
