I'm leaving it intentionally unexplained because I want the focus to be on the relationship between the two characters rather than on the setting, so it's essentially an unexplained phenomena where all the humans bar one (to our knowledge) have disappeared. Also, while towns and villages have been reclaimed by nature, life refuses to grow in the cities. As for the breed, I honestly don't know. I'm considering making it a labrador, because labradors are typically described as very loyal but not very dependent, but I'm not sure. I might not even go as far as to mention what it looks like in the story. The dog is not anthropomorphic and does not speak, the narration is presented in the form of an internal monologue.

This was my problem too really when I was younger. I even struggled with short stories, I would churn out a couple decent pages than start to lose direction or get bored. I'm finding this one a bit better because I've jotted out a rough plan that follows the entire story arc. I might even be able to expand it into a novella if I like the short storey enough.

Well somewhere out there, there's a town that's been completely turned to stone, but if you're talking wildlife then it depends on how deep in you go. On the parts closest to civilisation there's a lot of monkey-like creatures, that jump around and live on high branches, coming down to scavenge food from humans, as well as a few species of birds and stuff, some small snakes.

As you go deeper in the animals get a bit weirder. The trees get taller and thicker, light finds it harder to get through the branches so the creatures tend to be pretty blind, with better other senses, or some with straight up dark/night vision. In the deeper parts, you see giant snakes the size of regular trees in the more civilised areas, and flightless birds with beaks capable of penetrating the bark so they can sap liquids from inside the trees.

My plan was to make the dog's monlogue basically that of an educated man, and I was planning on making the man quite simple. I thought the dog being well spoken would add a slight tinge of humour to an otherwise bleak story. The problem I see with it is that due to the way I want trees not being too far away from each other, regular forest style near civilisation and slightly further apart in the deepest parts, but not far enough for anything more than the size of a car to get through, and lots of criss-corssing branches keeping the light out, there cant be anything enormous in size, except for maybe something like a giant snake, which wouldnt be restricted by these things.

I have been thinking about large creatures though, like giant boars, the width of a car, and the length and hight of two, and large Ram/goat style horns. I think most of the dangerous creatures will be OP because of their adaptions though as opposed to the huge size and speed. Living in the denser parts of deep forest and being able to move around the maze of trees lightning fast.

I'm far more interested in the animals themselves than any petty squabbles the humans of the world would have. I really don't like living with my mum. I want to move out, but I'm struggling to get a job, and even if I got one it'd probably be a while before I could do so securely.

I've found myself much more interested in learning things lately - I've read more books, and been more productive in general in the last month than I have in my entire life, so I'm considering going to uni; I think I'd be ok with - and perhaps even enjoy - the workload. My problem is that I don't know what to study. I'm open to anything that has decent prospects and I find somewhat interesting, but my A levels are all in music and I definitely don't want to study that. Would I even be able to get on a decent course with these? Or would I have to go to college (again) first if I wanted to do anything other than a David Beckham degree?

I got a C in Maths, B in Science and B in English - which are the important ones from what I understand, as well as an A in English Literature (apparently I'm really good at analyzing poems about niggers), a C in History, and a National Certificate in ICT, which while not being as important will at least look good.

As far as A levels go I have a B and a C in AS and A2 Music Tech, respectively. I also did a bunch of other BTECs at college which are worth a certain amount of UCAS points. I think I had something like 200 when I tallied them all up but I'd have to go back and access my records to make sure because it was a while ago.
