If you want to go by ancestry, go with the "western hunter gatherers" (the european R1b clade) group and "eastern steppe nomads" (R1a, there's only one clade of it so it yeah) group.
It is important to remember that the vikings invaded the "slavic" lands in the high middle ages and formed several countries where the nordic vikings where the dominant ethnicity and thus imposed their religion on the natives, however the natives DID have their own religion.

Truth, to some degree. A west Russian, Pole, or Ukrainian, is more genetically similar to an Englishman, a German, or Swede, than he is to a Croatian or Bulgarian. The WHGs were, though, by and large not R1b, and there are several clades of R1a. R1a was brought to Europe (or, from eastern Europe to the rest of Europe, depending on where we say Europe ends, but that's not important really) by the Yamnaya steppe nomads who mixed with neolithic (or early) European farmers, who were a mix of WHGs and Natufians (basal Eurasians), with the WHG-Natufian ratio depending on time and place. I1 and I2 are WHG paternal lineages, G2a and E1b1b (and to some extent, I think both J1 and J2, though I may be mistaken) were introduced to Europe with the EEFs, though the EEFs were already part WHG before mixing with the pure WHGs they came across in Europe, to whom they introduced farming. R1a and R1b are both ultimately descended from the ancient north Eurasians, and while both are present in some eastern European neolithic samples, and while the Villabruna sample (almost pure WHG, found in Italy) was R1b, by and large they only became prominent throughout Europe after the Yamnaya migrated westwards from the Pontic-Caspian steppe. The Corded Ware culture in the north European plain was seemingly close to purely R1a, and about 75/25 Yamnaya/WHG-heavy NEFs, likely descended from a northern branch of the Yamnaya culture (over time, the CWC picked up further NEF admixture and we end up with the modern northern European genotype). R1b was seemingly made prominent in western Europe after the CWC, by the Bell Beaker culture, who are likely descended from R1b-dominant south Yamnaya people. The Yamnaya people themselves were a mix of eastern European hunter-gatherers and Caucasian hunter-gatherers, likely around 70/30 EHG/CHG, though I'm not certain on that. The EHGs themselves are the result of an earlier mixing of WHGs and the ANEs I mentioned above, where their R- Y-DNA came from. So ultimately, modern Europeans are WHG+EEF+Yamnaya, but both the EEFs and Yamnaya people were WHG-descended, and modern north Europeans are typically 55-60% WHG-derived, the rest being ANE, CHG and Basal rich (Natufian). North and central Europeans are fairly uniformly a little over 50% Yamnaya-descended, with south Europeans seeing markedly less Yamnaya descent. This is why, as I said above, a Russian is closer to a German than a Bulgarian, despite the shared linguistic heritage. And again, R1a and R1b ultimately come from the ANEs, not the WHGs. For reference, it was the Yamnaya culture who brought bronze, domesticated horses, and the proto-Indo-European language and culture to Europe.

Sorry that's such a wall of text. I'll try to tl;dr but it still won't be too brief:
Mesolithic Europeans are WHGs, the first anatomically modern humans in Europe, whom we get I1 and I2 from and who produced the cave paintings in France. A group we call EEF, a mix of WHGs and Natufians (who are seemingly closely derived from basal Eurasians) who were the first farmers migrated from the near east into Europe, mixing with the indigenous WHGs and so enriching their WHG component over time as they spread farming northwards and westwards. They also brought Y-haplogroups E1b1b and G2a, possibly J1 and J2.
Meanwhile, the genotype of the proto-Indo-European Yamnaya culture had formed in the Pontic Caspian steppe, from EHGs (themselves WHG+ANE) mixing with CHGs. The Yamnaya people made bronze weapons and domesticated horses, which allowed them to conquer Europe fairly readily, bringing R1a, Indo-European language and culture, and the bronze age with them, and creating the Corded Ware culture. Later, another branch of Yamnaya people migrated to central Europe and formed the Bell Beaker culture, bringing R1b andwith them. After this we're no longer really looking at pre-history, but modern north and central Europeans are roughly 50/50 Yamnaya (EHG+CHG) and neolithic European (WHG+EEF).
No other modern people has as much Yamnaya ancestry, and the Indo-Iranic languages/cultures descend from the Sintashta culture, which itself descends from the Corded Ware culture. The Tocharian and Anatolian language branches which descended directly from the Yamnaya culture went extinct. The Nordic bronze age and proto-Germanic language resulted from a migration from the Unetice culture (Bell Beaker descended) into the Corded Ware-descended people of Scandinavia. As such, Celts and Italics are Beaker-descended, Germanics are Beaker and Corded-descended, and all other Indo-European cultures, including the Iranians and Hindus, (except for Hellenic, I'm unsure there) are Corded-descended.

I'm going to try and give the most impartial tl;dr I can:
Fact: Modern Europeans, genetically, are the result from Indo-European pastoralists and neolithic European farmers mixing after the former migrated into Europe from the steppe northeast of the black sea.
Fact: Northern Europeans have more Indo-European descent than southern Europeans
(Conjecture: This is because northern Europe was less densely populated than southern Europe when Indo-Europeans migrated into Europe.)
Observation: Some people were happy to simple note this and attach little value to it. Some, however, decided that this was grounds for discrimination against southern Europeans.
My take: Some southern Europeans really did knee-jerk react in a silly way to a bit of banter ("The virgin Italian farmer, the Chad Ukrainian horse warrior" or whatever, nothing I think anyone should get upset about), but at the same time some seemingly sincere anti-Mediterranean sentiments were put forward by some ("Italians are not white and we should exclude them", which I view as uncool) and obviously "return fire" ensued ("Germans were living in stick huts while Rome conquered the world!"). Frankly, it's autism on both sides. I don't like the nordicist superiority, and I don't like the accusations of nordicist superiority towards those who really are just stating "we have shared ancestry in different ratios". Neither is fair behaviour, and everyone looks bad for it.
