That is where self-discipline comes in. The best book which I've found on this subject is "The willpower instinct" by Kelly McGonigal.

A practice which is useful specifically for addicts is cue exposure therapy:

There is always a method to by-pass these applications. Relying on them as the sole method of abstinence has proved incredibly unsuccessful in my experiences. View them as an aid.
