Recently I was shipped most of my Comiket 95 goods, as well as various artbooks, and decided that I would be scanning a bunch of it. Of which I would be dumping here. I didn't see /animu/ with any thread about scanning, translating, and editing so I thought /animu/ could use one too. I use an Epson Perfection V600 Photo for scanning due to the large scan bed that can easily scan large artbooks and the posters in them.
For those who want to get into scanning or editing. These guides are a useful tool to get started.

Yeah they can be pretty short. Most are 18 - 24 pages with anthology series being around 120 pages. I use Paint+ to edit images but that's mainly for cropping and adjusting colors. Photoshop is much better if I need to remove noise/moire.

I was the one who replied to that post saying I would scan it. The image in the OP is from my scan though it was simply a quick one. I can definitely tell the colors aren't accurate. Once I get done with most of the C95 uploads, I can finally work on that.

Quality checking and revision is a thing, but anons don't seem critical or maybe don't even check. Then again, people skip over scanlation threads if they aren't a part of it. So this thread could be a hub to ask for QC on dedicated threads.

If you're going to be dumping images it might be best to post it on the relevant thread and linking it, like if you're reposting a whole work for a last look when you think you're done. You also have the option to upload it to a file-host you control, like MEGA, for the same purpose.

If any of you liked Otto Carius - Tigers in the Mud ( >>72311 ), here's some really neat shit translators have overlooked for decades. Miyazaki wrote a shitton of short /k/ manga in his spare time covering everything from the American Civil War to both World Wars and the Spanish Civil War, and later compiled it into Hayao Miyazaki's Daydream Data Notes. Basically nothing in this book except The Age of the Flying Boat has an English translation, official or otherwise, despite being over 20 years old.
The book's around $30-something on Amazon.co.jp and there's a scan up at https://exhentai.org/g/111408/3eb854c6b2/ . It's a big project with over a hundred pages, but if you somehow pulled it off or even just translated some individual stories you'd get a lot of exposure and goodwill.
Here's a list of the stories included:
>The Unknown Youngest Brother of the Giants (知られざる巨人の末弟 Shirarezaru Kyojin no Mattei) : A king of a Vulcan country orders the construction of a huge airplane.
>The Pride of Steel (甲鉄の意気地 Koutetsu no Ikuji) : A story about the Monitor and the Merrimack, two ironclad ships of the American Civil War.
>Enter the Multigun Tower (多砲塔の出番 Tahoutou no Deban) : A pig creates a huge tank and kidnaps a girl. Her boyfriend comes after them, and he and the girl finally destroy the tank. Miyazaki wanted to make an anime out of this. He even said, "I want to make the tank go at full speed with Country Road as BGM." (!) There was a plan to make it into an OAV, but the project never materialized.
>The Eyes of a Farmer (農夫の眼 Noufu no Me) : Based on Andre Malreaux's semi-autobiographical novel L'Espoir, this is a story about a farmer who finds an enemy base during the Spanish Civil War. It features a Potez 540 bomber.
>Steel of the Dragon (竜の甲鉄 Ryuu no Koutetsu) : A story about the Teien and the Chinen, Chinese battleships in the China-Japan War of 1905.
>Heavy Bomber over Kyuushu (九州上空の重轟炸機 Kyuushuu Joukuu no Juugousakuki) : A story about a Chinese heavy bomber (Martin 139W) which flew to Kyuushuu in Japan to conduct a night "air raid". But instead of bombs, it dropped fliers calling for peace.
>The Antiaircraft Guntower (高射砲塔 Koushahoutou) : A story about a huge antiaircraft guntower in Germany and the many Allied air force attempts to remove it.
>Q Ship (Q・ship) : A story about a "Q Ship" during World War I. A "Q Ship" was an English battleship which disguised itself as a civilian ship by putting sails on its radio mast to fight against German U-boats, who were fooled into taking it as their easy target.
>The story of Anshoumaru (安松丸物語 Anshoumaru Monogatari) : A story about the Anshoumaru, a Japanese make-shift aircraft carrier.
>Over London, 1918 (ロンドン上空1918年 Rondon Joukuu 1918 Nen) : A story about the German air raids of London.
>The Poorest Front (最貧前線 Saihin Zensen) : A story about the Japanese fishing boat Kisshoumaru and her crew, who were commandeered by the Japanese Navy.
>The Age of the Flying Boat (飛行艇時代 Hikoutei Jidai) : The manga that Porco Rosso is based on.
>The Pig's Tiger (豚の虎 Buta no Tora) : A story about Hans, a German mechanic and a Tiger tank.

You should pick a different font for when they're shouting, it looks pretty monotone right now. For example a bold and/or italic version of the same font works, or you could try something different like Manga Temple or Komika Title. It will make it more engaging to read too when there's a little variation, though try not to get carried away.
Also you shouldn't let the text touch the bubble, the "tug it." on the lowest bubble looks awkward.

▶ No.87745
>>87699
>>87713
If you can't avoid text touching the bubble, then as a last resort, you can put a bit of extra white space behind the text to push the bubble back, leaving a 1 or 2 pixel thick gap between the text and the bubble.
▶ No.87774>>87802 >>87807
>>87708
>Panel 2, "Well, you see… […]"
Terrible placement, you have plenty of bubble space. Center the text. "Something" can have its own line.
>P2, "wow, I got one"
"I got" and "one!" can be separated into their own lines, the text would be more vertical and could be enlarged for better reading.
>P3 "that's supposed […]"
It's awkward for "of" to have a line for itself since it's a short word. I'd put it with "field". Though, there are certain times when fitting text can become awkward no matter how you wrap/format it.
>P4, "Urya"
Too slanted, very small.
>>87713
It's at your discretion. If the original does it then feel free to do so. I'd try to make it fit if it's just plain font text.
There are cases where large vertical Jap text makes fitting English horizontal text harder, in those cases it may be necessary to even leave the bubble when it's large, but this is usually when text is emphasized, like screaming or sound effects.
The smaller text looks kinda aliased, or poorly anti-aliased.
Post the original nip version. It helps decide when to change fonts.

▶ No.87807>>87853

Mainly I'm talking about text like pic related where the text touches the bubbles and It's at a weird vertical slant. Do I just transform the text to the angle of the bubble or fill it up point by point?
▶ No.87853>>87860
>>87807
Yea, when it's effects/yelling like that, do it however you like. Touch the bubble edge if you want to or not. You'll probably do it if you want to fit large letters in there.
That might be more of a perspective transformation than a slant. It's not too noticeable on the "ゴウアアア" but note the exclamation points on that bubble. It's more obvios on the right bubble.
Since the text is misaligned you could place each letter individually.
Or, if you just want just a single text box (in the program, not the bubble) to edit, then lower the line spacing while keeping a large font size and indent each letter through spacing. I'm assuming you're using PS, which I'm not familiar with.
▶ No.87860>>87873 >>88641
>>87853
Yeah I'm using Photoshop CC 2018. I'm on the seventh page of the script now and it's looking better. I do prefer to angle some text but I'm not getting too crazy with it. I need more fonts for variation but I'm also trying to keep it consistent. Pretty proud of this page. I feel like I'm getting better.
▶ No.87873
>>87860
You might want to avoid the white-text with black outlines like in panel 2 and panel 5. Same with panel 2 in >>87806 . There are better fonts or formats to emphasize dialogue and those would be more legible. Panel 4 looks ok, but still consider it.
That's usually done for effects or text when it's on top of backgrounds/patterns/drawings. I try to keep a similar style/feel to the original nip text, but there are typesetters with their own preferences and some that just use the same font throughout chapters.

I ran the chapter by a non-/animu/ buddy after release and he said that looked bad so I'll be figuring out something different for black background dialogue like that. It won't happen again.

I have a mega and a googledrive. The googledrive I've barely used at all. My main monitor is a 4K rez 55 inch TV. My second monitor is just a slightly smaller and newer version of the same TV. They're detailed but I would need advice on how to set up the color settings for color pages. The manga I'm doing is pretty easy in terms of not being in color and most of the text in the script is in the bubbles. It's good for me to learn on. I save every changed edition in a new file but I probably do need to make copies on my external HDDs to be extra safe.

Maybe adding "The" might sound better?
In general:
-A lot of text seems kinda small, like the screaming in the 1st bubble in pg49 >>88930 that should probably be more noticeable, but I don't have the raws to compare for that specific example. Some TS have different preferences for text size when it comes to normal dialogue.
- Avoid vertical text whenever possible.
- I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread I, the text looks strangely rendered. Thick in some strokes, pixel thin in others, even in the same word or letter.
- This mango looks gay

The scream in the latter panel doesn't carry enough weight. Make the text bigger and bolder so it takes up more of the bubble. If it exits the bubble, you can either erase the overflow or leave it for emphasis. Note that you can change the spacing between the letters if it's vertical.

You're doing way better than before.
Just a couple of minor stuff. Keep in mind I don't have the raws to compare to.
Pg 57, this page heavily emphasizes negative space. Maybe move the notes to a credits/notes page or make the note less visually intrusive -- like shortening "background" to "BG"; leaving out "Japanese" when describing ultraman since it appears when searching it; moving the note either closer to the edge of the page or the outside edge of the panel, like below the tail and not crossing into the margin. There's also the bottom edge to not take away any focus from the drawing that's extending out of the panel.
Pg 60, the TL note - newline "left", it'll look a bit cleaner with
Pg 61, last bubble - May want to enlarge it a bit more.
Pg 62, panel four - align the text
Good job on 64, 66, 68 with the yelling.
Pg67, align "that's bad, people…" and "Fucking beast…" text with their boxes. This might just be me being OCD over the text being a few pixels off.
Pg70, you can newline "Human" in "Is he really human" to not squish the text so much and lower the line spacing if you want to keep a horizontal look.
Pg75, Top two bubble's text are too close to the top edges. Again, OCD. There's also a smudge in the first bubble's C.
Pg80. Make the first bubble's text bigger.
I wouldn't blame you if you think I'm being nitpicky but I could do a lot worse. Try imagine me being irritated when a group's QCer makes me fix stuff.

There are problems with scanlating ongoing works such as
>Scanlation Groups fighting to see who gets to scanlate and group drama
>Manga may start well, but goes to shit
>Manga gets axed
>Hiatus
With completed works, you can avoid all that bullshit. A lot of good manga goes untranslated and goes under everyone's radars. Best of all is when the translator simply reads the manga and the ending to see whether or not it's worth translating.

Have you ever had to work with customers? Or read business reviews for stores? People will pass a compliment to the face of an employee but that's as far as it goes. If something happens that they don't like, however, HOO BOY do they have to complain. They just HAVE to bitch to SOMEone, ideally as many people as possible. That's why you see so many stores that are just fine getting rated around the middle or worse since it's all people bitching about the one bad experience they had in the place, along with a couple more reasonable people who know not to take one bad thing as the whole bundle.
This still applies to product reviews in online stores, just not as much since those sites tend to encourage anyone who purchases to leave their thoughts on the product. Since rating isn't implied mandatory, or actively pushed or encouraged with your medium, you're mostly going to get the bitchy retards. It doesn't help that your product is also other content. It's like those YouTube videos on animal cruelty; even if the video is very good-quality and informative and well done, people will give it a thumbs down because they don't like the subject matter and don't understand how video rating works. Read the comments if you get any and see how many are just pointless low ratings, and how many are middling scores from people actually doing helpful critiques. The latter are your friends, the rest are mostly background noise.

And yeah, most times it's them rating the series. They don't think about the translations unless it stands out as being weird or gets filled with memes. If you see a mango online rated 2/5 and one rated 4/5, most people are going to think the series is getting bad or good reviews. They won't be thinking, "Man, the translator and cleaner must really suck". It'll be more along the lines of, "That series must be a generic shitshow with bad writing," or something.

>The only thing you should worry about is having your translations be faithful
Yeah I have trouble with this sometimes. When I translate stuff, I think, "would anyone ever actually say this in English?" Often I'll have to butcher sentences pretty bad if I want to stick to this dogma and I know a lot of purists would get pissed at me but I feel like it creates a much smoother and more natural sounding read. I don't know, I feel like it could be purists getting angry too. For example, I translated "konbini" to "mini-market" and just "store" depending on the context. I could have said food mart I guess but convenience store is way too cumbersome and a JC who has to piss really bad absolutely wouldn't say that. I also never write "eh," I always change it to "what" or"huh." Does this kind of stuff actually bother people or am I overthinking things? It's not like I'm doing any "jelly donut" or "rub-a-dub-dub" tier stuff.

I do too but I can only self-insert into losers, fat men, and DILFs. I not ugly or anything, I'm incredibly average looking. In fact, I prefer if the men I'm self inserting into are uglier than me, or at least old men. Is there something wrong with me? Sounds like you are in early developments into developing an NTR fetish. Happened to a few guys I know where it started with preffering porn with ugly bastards and then moving on to NTR and fantasizing in getting cucked.
Since it's this early, you can nip it in the bud. Try nofap or go for another fetish for awhile like trap shotas since both options are better than becoming a 2D cuckold.

Nope, I've been like this for the past few years. Always hated NTR. I hate vanilla sex specifically because if feels like I'm getting cucked, and I hate getting cucked. I can't self-insert into the vanilla males since I feel like they're better than me. Theoretically, I could self-insert into a cuckold but I really don't see what the difference between NTR and vanilla porn is. I like fat men and ugly men and DILFS because I see them as non-threatening and so I can self-insert into them. I'm about as far from liking NTR as it gets. I barely ever self insert when reading manga. If I want to do that, I just listen to ero-audio. It's a lot more personal than any other kind of digital adult entertainment.
>I feel like I'd be much happier if I could.

Complete novice here.
How does one go about dealing with bubbles like this? In a couple cases I've been able to find another place the artist has used the same template, copy the relevant corner from that, and paste it over, but for most of the area that needs redrawing there just aren't any clean instances to do that with.
Redrawing it manually seems impossibly time-consuming (especially since redrawing is the part of the process I am least skilled in), leaving it is ugly as sin, and it seems to take up too much of the bubble to be able to cover it over with a uniform ellipse.
This is an H-doujin, not a proper manga, so I guess standards can be a little lower, but still.

As much as I hate Gimp, that sounds flat out unacceptable to me. Paint.net is even worse than Gimp and has turned into some weird malware-tier shit if I recall. I highly recommend learning either Gimp or Krita instead. Gimp has a good text tool if you want it. Krita has a text tool as well and although it's complete shit, it should still be much better than what you're doing.
I use a combination of Krita and Gimp, Krita is much easier to redraw in because significantly better workflow/UX and better drawing tools, plus it has layer styles (for stroke and drop shadow) and stuff which Gimp doesn't. The only reason I use Gimp is that Krita developers are too lazy to add a text tool that doesn't suck 80 foot donkey cock even though they're supposedly so enthusiastic about helping comic artists. Though don't take that as Krita being good or Gimp text tool being good either. Gimp's text tool is easily the best text tool of any non-adobe program I've tried, but it still has many problems with it, in particular the text box resets if you scale it wrong and searching for fonts is broken.
Krita ran a crowd money scrubbing scheme half a year ago supposedly so they would be able to dev fulltime, but haven't added anything meaningful since and are apparently working on some fucking HDR display mode that's only available on Windows 10 and supported by only a handful of monitors. That describes the problem with Krita perfectly, they focus their efforts on obscure shit that literally nobody who actually uses the program cares about, meanwhile the text tool is broken and there's all kinds of small but very intrusive issues with basic features like the layer movement tool.
I don't think Gimp even has such a thing as a drop shadow or stroke, it's the kind of program that doesn't have a tool for drawing rectangles because you can accomplish the same through a 7 step process thus a separate tool isn't needed, even though it's apparently ok to have literally 6 separate brush tools with insignificant differences.
Gimp has some very good things in their roadmap that would make it significantly better (layer styles, adjustment layers, smart objects, automatic layer boundary size), but Gimp isn't known for fast updates. I found some gimp bug tracker post or something from 15 fucking years ago (yes, 15 YEARS) about adding stroke to text, and it's still not in the program.
>it's mostly issues that a single step in size or blur changes it too much
That's the problem I had with the stroke size. Admittedly Photoshop doesn't do this perfectly either if I recall right, but at least there's ways to make it work. The best way to accomplish it would be to use a vector program, because you can adjust the stroke of the path freely, but inkscape is a whole another bag of shit that I want even less to do with than Gimp.
>uppercase, I'm not aware of any editor in general that does that.
Pretty much all of Adobe's graphical software has a case conversion option in the menu, and some even have an uppercasing button in the text panel that only changes it visually so you can toggle it on/off. Uppercasing is a very common typographical styling method, more common than italic in some contexts.

TL here.
I always thought there was an option to turn text into all caps, or at least more options of caps-only fonts. Does it help if I write everything in all caps from now on?
▶ No.94578
>>94574
Neither Gimp nor Krita has a method for changing the capitalization of text, I use sublime text to convert it. There's plenty of uppercase fonts, it's just hard to judge them sometimes. Most caps fonts will look like shouting if you compare them directly with lowercase fonts, but it may be fine if you look at it separately.
>Does it help if I write everything in all caps from now on?
You shouldn't do that, even caps fonts have differences between uppercase and lowercase, including the new main font (pic related). Uppercasing long body text is generally not a good idea anyway, though sometimes it might work.

Today I picked up some mango (Pic-rel is the first page of the chapter) and translated, If you're willing, please look over and point out my mistakes, with an obligatory "git gud".

Moi: I did… things you couldn’t understand!

>Reverso: You can’t tear a tool for restriction with the excellent state that concentration of devil (ka-katakana) isn’t possible thanks to the effects of the serious cal sedative which I injected.
Moi: Breaking free from those restraints is impossible, thanks to the magic sedative I injected.

also admittedly I only knew 何 私 魔 中 kanji before looking everything up... Most others I recognised but did not have an idea as to what they might mean. I use anki for 10-30 min on days that I use anki, but I like the appeal of learning from materials moreso.

"I can't think clearly... what did you do [to me]!"
ぼんやりする is to be unfocused or unclear. The literal term is "my head is unfocused" but that doesn't read well. The [to me] would have been "[私に]何をした".
>私が注射したマジカル鎮静剤の影嚮であなたは魔カの集中ができなくなっている
>その快態で拘束具を引きちぎる事はできない。
If you want to be more specific, it does say that she cannot concentrate magical power (or concentrate on her magical power, I'd have to know the context) because of the injection, but other than that it's fine.

Another anime reference. 状況を開始せよ comes from 状況開始 , which is used by the Japanese military to begin practice military exercises. In Patlabor 2, a military coup d'etat starts with this phrase as a cover for the actual attacks, but anime/manga fans mistakenly thought this was commonly used as a command to begin a real battle and it became an inside joke/ongoing meme.
