I respect the man and the love he put into his craft and unironically agree with a lot of his stances on the anime industry. His films truly have beautiful artwork and animation and manage to take the viewer on a journey to a fictional world in a way that you normally could only experience with a fictional work when you are a child. If anime continues to decline like it does now, I doubt that anime will ever see a film director (or director in general) that will top the likes of his best works like Mononoke and Nausicaa.
He has become a controversial figure but the fact that people talk shit about someone who has worked for anime in decades because he said anime lacks interesting characters and creativity (which it does) when he himself has put his fucking soul into everything he made says a lot about how retarded western anime fans really are. When I look at what he was making in the 80s and 90s and compare it to the kind of shit that gets "hyped up" today, I almost feel inclined to call his works underrated because his works are the kind of thing that's going to be in museums someday.
Now, on the infamous quote of his: it does seem like Miyazaki is one of those boomers who like to complain about young people not being social enough but lack the experience of growing up in modern society to understand what the cause of that is and how depressing it can be to live in a society that seemingly does not give anything, only take. Ironically, he himself has stated in some book he wrote in his 30s that when he was in college he mainly watched anime for escapism and in this book he does actually seem to acknowledge that the modern-day otaku is a result of depression and social isolation caused by the stressfulness of Japanese society so maybe he does actually understand but is just not willing to admit it now that those same otakus have ruined the medium he loved so much when he was young himself.

The whole "Anime was a mistake" quote is actually a misquote. His problem with modern anime according to him is that mangaka and writers in the industry for the most part regurgitate older popular works and give them a fresh coat of paint pretending to be new. He's disappointed in the lack of innovation and how the industry would rather play it safe reusing the same old formulas.

The product goes where the money is. Like post >>47871 noted, people are depressed and socially isolated, so what people want from anime has changed- frontiers look more dangerous and creature comforts look more satisfying when you're sick and tired. Expecting anime producers and directors to effect deep cultural change is expecting far too much from what remains a niche aspect of the Japanese entertainment industry. If any Japanese entertainment has a chance of changing Japan's culture, it'd be their much larger live-action television and movie industry, and they're not going to do it. In fact, I'd say Miyazaki's lament shows his realization that all entertainment is a byproduct of the greater cultural condition, which is currently not healthy.

Valid criticism on societal values differing between the generations but it doesn't do much to explain why people are still uninspired and/or unable to create anything as inspiring. If you were to draw an analogy to music, you would have some of the greatest compositions made during periods of constant warring that have managed to survive the greater part of an epoch.

He was a genius at world building but awful at story structure and pacing. Ive seen so many of his films but couldn't tell you what happens in any of them. I just remember specific set pieces and bits. (Like water dragon washing scene)
I consider "The Matrix" to be nearly flawless when it comes to pacing. I could grab a piece of paper and write out the timeline from memory.
Miyazaki's work lacks this level of competent pacing. His movies never say anything in specific. Missed opportunities

Tezuka took direct inspiration from Disney and is considered to be the father of anime post rubberhose era. Tezuka was the one that created the famous "manga eyes", which became the basis of eyes most anime taken inspiration from. The inspiration for the eyes, according to Tezuka was Bambi. Bambi and the other animals in the movie had really huge adorable eyes, he liked them so much he decided to incorporate them into his human characters. The human characters are also based on Disney humans, but with the large Bambi eyes slapped onto them.

It happened in 1989 when Tezuka had just died. He basically shitposted about Tezuka's production style for the man's obituary message, which anyone would agree was done in bad taste. There are also multiple other comments by him which shows that he admits he is definitely influenced by Tezuka but he also actively tried to subvert the influence on himself by doing everything in a complete 180 degree turn from how he thought Tezuka would have done it, making him sort of a tsundere admirer if you catch my drift. Much like GRRM's relationship with Tolkien.

Well, in the end he intended to make his films for children and I believe that his films do have more depth to them than the average western children's film. In terms of writing, his films were always more about the underlying message rather than telling a full story. Nausicaa and Mononoke were about pollution, Spirited Away was about child prostitution (I'm not making this up), Kiki's Delivery Service was about dealing with depression as a child etc.
It's true that he's a commie but every Jap who grew up after the war became one so that's more to blame on the people who conquered them and the social changes in their society.

>Really?
Spirited Away is about a young girl who is abandoned by her parents and then meets a strange man who tells her that her only way of surviving the hell she has found herself in is by working in the bathhouse. Here, she meets the "Madame" of the bathhouse who gives her a new name and forgots her old one (similar to how prostitutes normally have their own nickname like "candy" given to them by their pimps and are not allowed to use their real name when dealing with customers).
Then there is the fact that bathhouses used to actually have a secondary function as brothels during the Edo period, which were often used by older men who paid the servants of the bathhouse to have sex with them. The visitors of the bathhouse in the film are all seemingly male, the servants who have the task of washing visitors are female.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onsen_geisha
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_prostitution_in_modern_Japan#Soapland
>Onsen geisha (温泉芸者) is are Japanese geisha, or entertainers, who work in onsen (hot spring) resorts or towns. The term onsen geisha has a negative connotation in that the term has come to be synonymous with prostitute. This is due to several reasons.
>Soaplands began when explicit prostitution in Japan became illegal in 1958, as a simple form of bath where women washed men's bodies. They were originally known as toruko-buro, meaning Turkish bath. Following a 1984 campaign by Turkish scholar Nusret Sancaklı (JA, TR) denouncing the use of this name for brothels, the new name "soapland" was the winning entry in a nationwide contest to rename them.
Lastly, in pre-WWII Japan, it was actually common for parents to sell their daughters to brothels if they felt that they were not disciplined enough and weren't of any use to them and the MC of Spirited Away does leave the bathhouse as a more matured person.

I forgot to mention that the actual term "Spirited Away", in Japanese Kamikakushi was used for strange disappearances, often seeing as something caused by angry gods. It's a weird mindset. If your nation disarms it sure as hell doesn't mean your enemies/allies/other nations are going to do so too. UN sanctions mean basically nothing since even if everyone disarms according to UN resolutions or such shit, then the UN will be the only ones with weapons, and the ones with the weapons are the actual rulers of any society. John P. Hogan wrote something similar in theme which was later mangaified by Hoshino Yukinobu.

Is it this one: https://archive.fo/q9sV4
>He was strongly influenced by Marxism. You have to understand that in Japan, the word "communism" isn't as demonized as in the US. Marxism as a theory to analyze society and history has been taught in universities. The Socialist Party had been the second largest party in Japan for a long time, and the Communist Party still holds seats in the Parliament. During the war, any political or labor movement was banned, and the communists were almost the only ones who vocally opposed the war. After the war, labor unions were allowed to be formed, and many of them were led by communists or communist sympathizers. Many were idealistic young people who believed in the future of "truly democratic Japan." Miyazaki was one of those young people, as was Takahata. (As the Russians say, "If you don't believe in Communism by the time you are 15, then you have no heart.")
>Miyazaki was the chairman of the animator's union at Toei Doga. The early works in which Miyazaki was involved, such as Horus or Conan, show his political beliefs somewhat. He once said he wasn't even sure about making Nausicaä a princess, since that "makes her an elite class." Pom Poko was basically the story of how the liberal movements in post-war Japan failed, according to Miyazaki.
>Around the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, Miyazaki came to the conclusion that Marxism (and Historical Materialism) is wrong, and he totally forsook it. He said that his realization had more to do with writing Nausicaä than the collapse of the communist bloc. (As Russians continue, "And if you still believe in Communism by the time you are 30, then you have no brain.") You can clearly see how this turnabout affected him in how he ended the manga Nausicaä.

Most of his work is kinda of shit as a movie by standard definitions. They're incredibly pretty to look at and it's neat to see some dude's imagination just explode on screen for 2 hours, but I don't like his movies almost at all. Plot wise they're all meandering and incredibly indirect. Mononoke is one of the few that actually feels like it has a legitimate story and even then it takes way too long to tell it. I do genuinely appreciate the skill and imagination that goes into them but I can't enjoy the movies at all because I tend to focus on things like plot and writing. I don't mind that people love the movies, but it does irk me that people refer to them as "masterpieces" when most of them are horribly underwritten.

Miyazaki, like most anime directors, is an illustrator promoted to director because people really liked his drawings. Sometimes this makes happy accidents Hideaki Anno is a good example but usually you get well-intended artfags who know little about cinematography, editing, or pacing but trying their best anyways. /film/fags like Mamoru Oshii have a serious advantage over their peers thanks to this and their work hints as what anime could become if only the average director knew what he was doing.

>I watched Nausicaa on a big screen. For me this was a re-encounter after 26 years. Near me sat Miya-san. When the screening room's lights dimmed, I tensed up. My firsts clenched, and became sweaty. Then, Nausicaa started. Whenever we finish making a film, we don't watch it again, neither do we want to. This is the only way we can go to the next film.

From what I've seen this isn't uncommon. Once they've left editing and it's out to print, a lot of them move on. I know Rowan Atkinson has said he's never watched anything he's been in, except once on an in-flight movie.
I think Miyazaki's best stuff is his artbooks. His films can be really good, but ironically I love him the most when he's just going full otaku over plane/tank designs. This is probably why Porco Rosso is my favorite, since a good amount of the film is just seeing his designs flying about.

I recommend checking out Nausicaa's audio commentary with Hideaki Anno and assistant director Kazuyoshi Katayama (who later went on to direct Gainax's Appleseed OVA and The Big O) if you ever stumble across it. It starts off a bit underwhelming, but as the film goes along the conversation gets better and starts getting derailed into weird stories about Miyazaki. For example:
Miyazaki's music listening habits, which Hideaki Anno discovered after lending him a cassette. Apparently the autist loves to loop the same song for hours loudly without headphones and laughs his ass off at the exact same part every single time. He does this until he suddenly grows tired of the song and loses his shit if he ever hears it again.
He somehow wore out the tape within a single day. Hideaki Anno never lent him a cassette again.

Not coincidentally, Takahata was also the music director for Miyazaki's best film, Kiki's Delivery Service. If you rewatch it you'll notice it's much sparser musically than Miyazaki's usual stuff.

>The Unknown Youngest Brother of the Giants (知られざる巨人の末弟 Shirarezaru Kyojin no Mattei) : A king of a Vulcan country orders the construction of a huge airplane.
>The Pride of Steel (甲鉄の意気地 Koutetsu no Ikuji) : A story about the Monitor and the Merrimack, two ironclad ships of the American Civil War.
>Enter the Multigun Tower (多砲塔の出番 Tahoutou no Deban) : A pig creates a huge tank and kidnaps a girl. Her boyfriend comes after them, and he and the girl finally destroy the tank. Miyazaki wanted to make an anime out of this. He even said, "I want to make the tank go at full speed with Country Road as BGM." (!) There was a plan to make it into an OAV, but the project never materialized.
>The Eyes of a Farmer (農夫の眼 Noufu no Me) : Based on Andre Malreaux's semi-autobiographical novel L'Espoir, this is a story about a farmer who finds an enemy base during the Spanish Civil War. It features a Potez 540 bomber.
>Steel of the Dragon (竜の甲鉄 Ryuu no Koutetsu) : A story about the Teien and the Chinen, Chinese battleships in the China-Japan War of 1905.
>Heavy Bomber over Kyuushu (九州上空の重轟炸機 Kyuushuu Joukuu no Juugousakuki) : A story about a Chinese heavy bomber (Martin 139W) which flew to Kyuushuu in Japan to conduct a night "air raid". But instead of bombs, it dropped fliers calling for peace.
>The Antiaircraft Guntower (高射砲塔 Koushahoutou) : A story about a huge antiaircraft guntower in Germany and the many Allied air force attempts to remove it.
>Q Ship (Q・ship) : A story about a "Q Ship" during World War I. A "Q Ship" was an English battleship which disguised itself as a civilian ship by putting sails on its radio mast to fight against German U-boats, who were fooled into taking it as their easy target.

Miyazaki loves the early 20th century, the Belle Epoque destroyed by kikes. They had their planes, they had their comics. Now, no one realizes in the American fandom, but that weird design of his old hags (Ponyo's sea mother, Spirited Away's witch) is specifically inspired to one ancient author.

>"huge fans" try adapting Nausicaa into a short film
>garish colors everywhere
>trailer text hints they'll drop what little subtlety the movie had
>director poses for the camera with his manga and talks about how he wants the props to make it into the Ghibli museum
Fucking hueniggers. Why can't they just let the movie and manga stand on their own without desecrating them?

Because the movie sucks compared to the manga. It makes no sense and adapts none of the nuance or depth of the story and characters. Nausicaa is crying out for a 2-cour adaptation by studio Bones.

It isn't just the plants, the entire trailer is way too saturated. It's like looking at one of those awful Disney VHS covers.

It is very different from the film, but I haven't finished the manga yet so I don't know what happens.

Because nothing of value has ever been produced in Brazil except cash crops, so they have to steal from other cultures.

Still better than a possible burger Nausicaa. The 'native versus empire' plot fits very well in the anticolonialist trope, so they would definitely made her a brown feminist.
Don't piss your panties over anything that doesn't follow the Hollywood homogenized style. You've learned to digest the most abhorrent, stupidest shit in animu format. Might as well learn the hue style.

It only looks that way in the movie.

IIRC, isn't the finale of the manga pretty much the final Resident Evil film and Beneath the Planet of the Apes?

I haven't seen either so I can't say.
Most people don't get just how different the Nausicaa manga is from the movie. I certainly didn't expect it. The plot takes a hard fork early on, with the manga aiming for something much grander and more nuanced than the movie. There's a shitton of factions, worldbuilding, and character development that never show up in the movie and it only continues to grow better and more blackpilled as it goes along.
To give you an example of just how fucking different they are, the Torumekian empire aren't the Valley of the Wind's enemies in the manga, but their very uneasy allies.
