Just finished reading this manga and i did not like that ending. Was I supposed to feel bad for this asshole? There was nothing noble about the way it ended it was a waste. Why would you throw away your life when nothing was at stake? It is so meaningless since only a death which is riddled with sacrifice deserve to be praised. This was reckless teenager dying a gruesome death in a road crash.

I don't imagine it was meant to be anything but a tragic death.

I don't think so. Why do you think that iconic pose exist? Everybody glorifies his death because the manga glorifies his death. I have never seen anybody having a different opinion. That's why i believe it was a shitty death and served no purpose. Truly the most pointless death ever considering what a prick he was to everyone. If they had made him likeable it would of helped.

It's not iconic because it's glorious. It's iconic because it's sad & the finale to the series.

My question is simple. What was the point in him dying? Why would anyone die like that and why do people get emotional and overlook this error? A death becomes emotional only when it has sacrificial element and we know it will help in progressing the story. The guy just killed himself and smiledlike a retard.

It's shocking. Physical exhaustion with internal injuries. How is that an error? Why do you assume anything about his death was meant to be sacrificial?

He was at the end of his road. Boxing was all Joe ever had in his life. He was past his prime and he wanted to give it his all in one last fight. Its a man thing. You wouldn't understand.

You're a woman aren't you? Joe only knew boxing and wanted to burn himself out to ashes, he was already suffering and he knew he was near the end of his road. Boxing gave him purpose, gave him pretty much everything he had, as much as he didn't give a shit at the start he grew fond of it. So he gave it his all, there was no sacrifice or a greater good, just a man who wanted to throw punches with the strongest of fighters one more time, to let himself burn brighter than any other man who has ever entered the ring.

This type of events aren't uncommon in fighting sports, at least they weren't, boxers with broken hands mid match would beg their seconds to allow them to keep going, even if the consequences would be to never be able to fight again. They risk it all for the moment because they want this. they want this moment, they have crawled through the ranks and reach the fight they have been begging to reach, to prove themselves to the world, after all the support, all the training, are you really going to let it all go down because of an injury? Sure, you can just try again, but you're not thinking about that, this might be your only chance, it might be your only chance to fight this man as well, so you keep fighting, it is irrational, stupid and selfish, but it is absolutely what a man would and can do. If you can't get that you're either a woman or a faggot, there really isn't another way to put it because again it isn't something logical, but it's something a man can understand.

It isn't death that scares a man, it is dying without a purpose that absolutely terrifies him.

>ITS A MAN THING YO SHUT UP WOMAN

So this reply showed up after 5 days. The guys on 4chan /a/ said the same thing.

According to you all joe had nothing in life but this is false. He could have become a coach in tange gym, married youko, even after losing to jose his life could have been great with his kids, career and fame. But no, he killed himself. I don't understand this mindset this is such a bad writing. So what if you lose? Mohammad ali also lost couple of times in his career but he didn't kill himself. A legend and a MAN like ali can handle defeat. Only justification to this is joe was mentally ill which explains why he was rude to those who wished him good. But this will break the fragile male ego in us. Does this mean to be a MAN you have to be mentally ill? LMAO

How would you know that faggot?

But also you're entirely correct and those anons despite trying to act like real men would never kill themselves to be at the top of competition despite pretending like that's a reasonable thing to do.

> What was the point in him dying?

Have you ever watched the movie, "The Wrestler"? It's about a washed up wrestler, who lost his purpose in life, and fell into various vices. He eventually turns his life around, and really gets back into the ring. However, he finds out that his health has deteriorated, and that he shouldn't wrestle ever again. Knowing what his life is like without wrestling, he opts to wrestle one last time with all he has. It isn't explicitly shown, but it's pretty obvious that his heart gives out, and he dies doing what he both loved and was meant to do. If you can't understand that, then you can never understand what being a professional is about.

I'd also like to point out it's "should've", not "should of". I can see you're also an idiot.

>Joe did the right thing.

His actions were most definitely selfish, but Joe really only knew boxing. It gave meaning to his life that he normally wouldn't have had as an ex-con. He completely dedicated his life to boxing, and used up every last ounce in his last fight. He caused the champ to physically age well past his prime by being absolutely relentless in the ring. In the end, he lost the match, but gained immortality.

Just gonna add my 2 cents after seeing fellow joechads dominating here.

Joe didn't like boxing at first and only used it to get allowance and pocket money from danpe, then in juvenile prison he was publicly humiliated and manhandled by a completely superior bred man named Toru rikishi. This emasculating experience made joe learn boxing and his goal was to defeat or even kill this man. He dedicated his everything in this pursuit of overpowering Rikishi and he was eating breathing boxing. And when he finally killed that man it made him realize how empty and meaningless his life has become. Ridden with guilt and nihilism he found his GOD in boxing again. The thrill and joy he got in the ring made him feel alive. He gave his everything to boxing destroying himself completely to the point when advanced brain damage started to show up at such a young age. He gave it all and stood tall did it his way.

To truly understand Joe you oughta listen My Way by Frank Sinatra. It's like the song was written after Joe's life

Also i am gonna add another thing in this if it's okay. I think Joe had some mental disorder. I can say since i suffer from ADD and extreme mood disorder which makes me act like a total bitch to everyone. So there's that i like to think Joe had some mental issues

His death was only glorified in the anime, in the manga it just shows him sitting on the stool with a smile because of how content he is that he died doing what he loved.
