What are some older anime from the 20th to early 21st century you anons enjoy? I truly loved a lot of the old fantasy and sci-fi anime as they had a level of polished and care that you don't see anymore.

Nigger what? Did you just watch the 1987 Patlabor OVAs without finishing off the movies too? Moreover Patlabor is a character driven comedy series (at least until the second movie), there's not much to go "anywhere". Until you at least watch the first 2 movies, you can't say shit about Patlabor.

>Does that mean I can tell this fag up here that he needs to watch Key all the way to the end before he can even declare if the series really is shit

Considering you can finish the seven Patlabor OVAs and 2 movies in a fucking afternoon, yeah, no-taste anon should like an absolute retard for declaring the series shit. Doubly so considering he's reeeeing about the show's humor not impressing him as if that's the only thing it has to offer, despite Patlabors strength being both its humor and versatility in how it can seamlessly blend comedy, action, and politics in a compelling way.

If he didn't find the humor funny, fine, but dropping such a short show and declaring it objectively shit is just a mark of impatient faggotry. If he was talking about the 50+ episode TV series, then I'd give the benefit of the doubt as to not wanting to invest time in something he's not into.

Yeah, I can definitely see where your taste in media lies.

>Patlabors strength being both its humor and versatility in how it can seamlessly blend comedy, action, and politics in a compelling way.

There's nothing "versatile" about it. The first couple episodes are a nice intro to the series, then it's filler, then it there's a "big" finish.

Rail Wars! and Daphne of the Brilliant Blue do everything that Patlabor was attempting (At least, going by all the stuff you're praising the show for), except they do it better.

The first half is blatantly episodic meant to establish the characters and their personalities and it's not until the two-part Longest Day that a relevant plot is established. You'd know that if you finished it.

You honestly sound like a genuine normalfag who watches old stuff with the same mentality of currently airing shit, expecting to be instantly gratified week-to-week not realizing these episodes were released months apart that allowed the creators play around with story telling and characterization. >You honestly sound like a genuine normalfag who watches old stuff with the same mentality of currently airing shit, expecting to be instantly gratified week-to-week not realizing these episodes were released months apart that allowed the creators play around with story telling and characterization.

So, you're telling me that I cannot "fully appreciate" the series unless I watch each episode after X amount of time? Does that mean I cannot criticize a manga or comic for being rushed in it's story since the 6 chapter series was released over the span of 6 months, and I read it all in under 2 hours? Or, I cannot criticize even a weekly show because I managed to watch it all in the span of a week when it aired over the span of four months? Or, I cannot criticize a movie series for having such a drastic shift in tone between entries when those films were developed over the span of twenty years and I just watched each successive one every night?

Get the fuck out of here with your elitist mindset.

Patlabor is an under developed series that starts with an interesting premise, drops it, then finishes things off with having to explain everything to the viewer and leaving people wanting more. The very fact that the last episode deals with a mech designed for military use, and it being a secret, is really the ONLY time the show actually does take any time to develop the world it's placed in instead of just existing. Why isn't there more explored in regards to how the mechs helped shape the future of Tokyo and the world? Why is there some concern about environmental impact that is then swept under the rug? Why are mechs being designed for military use towards the end of the series instead of earlier? Why is the Patlabor force called in to handle hostage situations when there isn't a mech involved? Why is Tokyo in a constant traffic jam that seems to disappear when convenient? Why isn't the schism between the rich kid and his parents company explored more? Why is the big feminine guy all alone and what happened to his father? What was that talk between the American cop and her partners about? Why isn't the past between the chief and the revolutionary leader given further detail if the guy was willing to destroy the city? Why is the only labor crime shown in regards to just petty thieves and the coup at the end? You keep talking about how "versatility is the shows strength", but, I hate to break it down for you, that would mean the the show would be placed under something akin to a "slice of life" series; WHICH IT IS NOT. First episode is comedy, second is action, third and forth are comedy, and the last three episodes are action. Also, why do you keep trying to talk about how "politics" is important to the series when ONLY ONE OF THE DAMN EPISODES HAD TO DEAL WITH IT, AND IT WAS THE FILLER GHOST STORIES EPISODE. If you're talking about the guy taking over Tokyo is political, then you might as well consider every 007 and M:I story political as well. Why are you wasting so much time defending a series that honesty isn't good. It does has some neat ideas, which other shows have followed up on and done better, but there's nothing special about it outside of the animation.

>Moreover, it's made by Mamuro Oshii

Who?

https://anidb.net/creator/131

Oh, he did Sky Crawlers and the Dragon Ball story for Halo Legends.

>so bitching about story telling that doesn't cater to your underdeveloped brain is fruitless.

Just because someone is able to make a good product doesn't mean that they can't fuck up and release a stinker every now and then. Tonokatsu Hideki did Hyper Speed Gran Doll and Wolf and Spice II, which I love, but that doesn't mean I'm going to defend Genesis of Aquarion. Itano Ichirou did the first Digimon Tamers film and Magic Users Club, but that doesn't mean I'm going to defend Patlabor or Angel Cop. Kodera Katsuyuki did Bomberman Jetters and Kachou Ouji, but that doesn't mean I'll defend Magi. Oomori Takahiro did Durarara, but Anons really had to severely pull my leg to consider eventually giving Samurai Flamenco a second chance after dropping it.

Just watched a wind named amnesia... and I must say it kind of seems self contridictory. Basically, it's about aliens somehow forcing all of mankind to have amnesia to see if they are worth of assimulation... but the thing is, a character in this movie said they had been watching humanity for 50 million years. So, there really is a lack of logic here. They have already viewed humanity in their primitive state so I don't understand what they mean by "what it is that drives man". They've already had plenty of time to determine that. By wipping memories from humanity, all you have left is a determination to survive. I also don't understand the concept of wandering around for essentially no reason when there is virtually nothing worthy of note besides ruins, and no intelligable people around to talk to anyway. This type of thing honestly ruins the adventure genre for me.

Random shot in the dark but I tried to make an Urusei Yatsura blu-ray encode a few months ago, I dropped it because I couldn't get something right. If someone finds a fix I can work on a release.

I stopped because I couldn't get it to have the same timebase as the horrible [Kagura] release so I could use the [Last Resort Encodes] subtitles which have been retimed for it, avoiding having to time 195 episodes of subtitles myself. If someone figures out how to remux the BDs so they have the same timebase as [Kagura] (and I can't just import his timebase, doing that is error prone and a lot of manual work), I could remux them myself and make the encode. I can quite easily make something that'll be the best encode of the series by a large margin, I'm experienced with x264.

Here is a single comparison shot, the third image is a differential image. The darker a pixel is on the third image, the closer my encode is to the original. Completely black means exactly the same. I think my test encode already looks mostly fine and it could use plenty of tweaking still, the bitrate is about a quarter of the original's. (full TV series on BD - 1.4 terabytes. I want to be not too far from 350GB)

>>951210

I tried to watch that one but I dropped it because it has completely borked telecining and I couldn't find a release which fixed it nor fix it myself. It triggers my autism too much.

I got 15 minutes in and it was good up until then though.

I haven't tried doing this in HEVC, but I've done HEVC encodes with x265 in the past and learned that if there's even a little grain it actually performs worse than x264/h264, and that's mostly why I haven't bothered.

The bitrate is nearly 40mbps, or about the maximum allowed by the BD spec. It's a really good blu-ray release, from a really good master.

x265 is the only h265 encoder I used. x265 can compress less efficiently than x264 if your source is grainy, and it doesn't take much grain. The difference is less obvious at smaller bitrates, but at 1080p once you're near or over around 8-10mbps x264 takes off with much better image quality at the same bitrate.

Anyone know some old anime with good OPs/EDs/soundtrack/character songs which aren't Anime Pop? Basically, anime music, that is not evidently "anime music" at all and simply sounds like regular music, and good music at that.

The less obvious and the more buried it is the better, but anything is fine.

Here are some examples:

I'm talking stuff like Lodoss which everyone has heard of and has been beaten to death in these threads, but what not everyone knows is that it pretty much created its own genre of music with a whole CD's worth of amazing unique character songs such as https://files.catbox.moe/ikqcm5.ogg scattered around its soundtrack CDs. Highly recommended you download everything and find them.

Or Rose of Versailles, which I haven't actually watched or read so I don't know if they pop up in the anime. But the soundtrack CD amazingly features more song than soundtrack and most of them are great. Here are two: https://files.catbox.moe/rxkxr7.ogg https://files.catbox.moe/mar7z0.ogg

Here's a nice city pop song from Megazone 23's vocal collection: https://files.catbox.moe/a2hrcr.ogg

Here's the other song released in the same CD as Serial Experiments Lain's opening, it's quite decent. It's some late 90s rock music with maybe a very light touch of grunge or punk: https://files.catbox.moe/fo713b.ogg

GenoCyber is fucking terrible, but I love it.

It's not only nonsensical, excessively vulgar and tasteless and boring, but the actual production of the physical media is lazy as fuck as well.

The 1st OVA's credits on Manga Video's VHS release is literally a spinning jpg of the main character nude. The 2nd OVA spends 20 mins building up the next fight and ends on the first punch, saying "fuck you, buy the next tape."

Watch it or don't. I'm not your dad and I'm definitely not going to fingerblast you on-screen behind an x-ray machine.

Laughing Salesman is pretty funny. Half the time he ruins someone's life for breaking his promises, the other half he does it just for the shits and giggles.

BDs for that are still rolling in. At least encodes of them are, I haven't checked the exact release dates.

I imagine the best time to watch will be soon but not now, as the bulk of encodes and maybe fansubs come soon after a release.

I mean for fuck's sake the only BD encode of the main series is by Moozzi2.

It was very good, but fuck me if that ending wasn't the most bittersweet thing I've seen in a while. Really good ending song too.

I've been watching the original Sailor Moon, I've read through the manga, but I wanted to see how it was. Lots of filler, but I don't mind since we get to see the scouts have fun.
