Mari Okada's Childhood Home, Used as Reference in TV Anime Anohana, Has Gone Up in Flames
>Early in the night at 9 PM on February 1, Twitter user 03_kimuson posted a video of a house in Chichibu, Saitama engulfed in flames. The house, and the surrounding street, was featured heavily in Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day as the reference for Jintan’s house. A reference used because it was actually the house that screenwriter Mari Okada grew up in.
>Chichibu is well known for being the setting of three anime by the Super Peace Busters creative team consisting of director Tatsuyuki Nagai, writer and director Mari Okada, and artist Masayoshi Tanaka: anime film Her Blue Sky, which released in October 2019 (here's our review), anime film Anthem of the Heart in 2015, and TV anime Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day.
>The reason Chichibu features so heavily in the productions of anime from the trio is that it’s the hometown of Mari Okada. Okada, who had a troubling childhood, used writing to help cope with her feelings from her younger days, with plot points and emotions similar to her youth. The production team decided to use the area for Anohana because it was more personal for Okada. Even more so with Jintan’s home being based off Okada’s home growing up. While certain creative liberties were taken when translating the house to the small screen, the two are unmistakable. When touring Chichibu, the house appears on anime pilgrimage maps given out by staff at the tourism center near Chichibu Station.
>By 11:30 PM, Twitter user sakurayuji1 posted images of remains of the house with the fire extinguished. The house was a family home – though not known if it still belonged to the Okadas – and luckily, as of reporting, there’s been no mention of anyone being harmed in the blaze.

Sure enough, her essays won local and national competitions. Few thought that she’d be able to survive in the “real world” but after graduation, Okada moved to Tokyo and enrolled at the Amusement Media School to study games scenario writing.

Violet Evergarden Side Story Film Opens in the Philippines on March 11
Philippine film distributor VIVA International Pictures announced on Wednesday that it will begin screening Violet Evergarden I: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll (Violet Evergarden Gaiden: Eien to Jidō Shuki Ningyō), a side story to the Violet Evergarden anime, in SM Cinema theaters in the Philippines beginning on March 11.
The new anime's story centers on Isabella, the heir to a noble house. She attends a school for well-groomed young women, under a "contract" with her father. To her, this beautiful place where white camelias bloom is nothing more than a prison. Having resigned all hope and expectations for her future, Isabella meets her new manners teacher, Violet Evergarden.
Minako Kotobuki plays Isabella York, the scion to the great and noble house of York who is pessimistic about her future, and who holds no love for Violet, her new teacher. Aoi Yūki plays Taylor Bartlett, a girl with no family who comes to pay Violet a visit. The main cast members from the television anime also returned for this side story. Minori Chihara performed the the anime's theme song "Amy."
While the anime was originally slated to screen in Japan for two weeks only starting on September 6, it screened for at least five weeks. The film eventually earned a cumulative total of 641,980,500 yen (about US$5.98 million).
The anime held its world premiere as planned at the AnimagiC convention in Mannheim, Germany, which ran on August 3 and 4. The AnimagiC organizers said that they continued the screening "at the express request of the studio."
Kyoto Animation's television anime adaptation of author Kana Akatsuki and illustrator Akiko Takase's Violet Evergarden novels premiered on television in Japan and on Netflix in some territories in January 2018. The anime launched on Netflix in the United States in April 2018. Kyoto Animation's separate Violet Evergarden: The Movie anime film project will open in Japan on April 24.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 Anime's Video Previews Mili's Ending Song
Anime premieres on Netflix worldwide in April
The official website of Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, the new 3D CG Ghost in the Shell anime, revealed on Thursday that Mili are performing the ending theme song "sustain++;." Mili's YouTube channel began streaming a video for the song that shows the lyrics in programming text.
The anime will debut on Netflix worldwide in April.
Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Ohtsuka, Kōichi Yamadera, Yutaka Nakano, Toru Ohkawa, Takashi Onozuka, Tarô Yamaguchi, and Sakiko Tamagawa are all reprising their respective roles as Motoko Kusanagi, Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa, Saito, Paz, Borma, and the Tachikoma from previous anime installments in the franchise (only Ghost in the Shell Arise had different cast members voicing the characters). Osamu Saka is returning from the various Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime as Daisuke Aramaki.
Nobuko Toda (Sweetness & Lightning, The case files of Jeweler Richard) and Kazuma Jinnouchi Busou Shinki: Moon Angel) are composing the music. Toda is best known for composing the music of the Metal Gear Solid series alongside Harry Gregson-Williams, and Toda and Jinnouchi collaborated on the Ultraman anime last year. The pair also composed the soundtracks for the Halo 4 and Halo 5 games.
millennium parade, the new creative team led by King Gnu member Daiki Tsuneta, is performing the opening theme song "Fly with me." Vocalists on the track include ermhoi, HIMI, Cota Mori, and Kento Nagatsuka (WONK).
The anime will have a stage presentation at the AnimeJapan 2020 event in March.
Kodansha and Production I.G announced a new anime based on Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell manga in April 2017. Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki are directing the project at Production I.G and Sola Digital Arts. Production I.G. USA president Maki Terashima-Furuta previously stated during an interview that the anime would have two 12-episode seasons, with Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) directing one of the seasons, and Aramaki (Appleseed) directing the other. Russian illustrator Ilya Kushinov (The Wonderland) is the character designer.
Production I.G previously produced Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence films in 1995 and 2004, respectively, as well as the 2002 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex television anime and its TV sequel, original video anime (OVAs), and film. In 2013, Production I.G adapted the material into the Ghost in the Shell Arise prequel OVA, which it later remixed into a television series. Most recently, the studio debuted Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie in 2015 and the Ghost in the Shell VR Diver smartphone video in 2017.
Dark Horse Comics and later Kodansha Comics published Shirow's original 1991 manga and its sequels in North America.
Dreamworks and Paramount's live-action film adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson opened in the United States in March 2017, and opened in Japan in April 2017.
Aramaki and Kamiyama also directed the anime of Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi's Ultraman manga, which premiered on Netflix globally on April 1. Netflix announced a second season at Annecy in June. Additionally, the two will also co-direct an upcoming Blade Runner — Black Lotus anime series based on the Blade Runner 2049 film. Kamiyama and Aramaki will work on Blade Runner — Black Lotus after Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045.

Dorohedoro Manga Gets New Chapter 17 Months After Story Finale
14-page chapter featuring Ebisu, Devils premiered on Wednesday
This year's March issue of Shogakukan's Monthly Shonen Sunday published a new, special 14-page chapter of Q Hayashida's Dorohedoro manga on Wednesday. In the one-shot story, the Devils play a prank on Ebisu.
The science-fiction manga debuted in Shogakukan's Monthly Ikki magazine in 2000, and later moved to Hibana and then Monthly Shonen Sunday. The manga's main story ended in September 2018. The manga's 23rd and final compiled book volume shipped in November 2018.
Viz Media publishes the manga in English, and it describes the story in the first volume:
In a city so dismal it's known only as "the Hole," a clan of Sorcerers have been plucking people off the streets to use as guinea pigs for atrocious "experiments" in the black arts. In a dark alley, Nikaido found Caiman, a man with a reptile head and a bad case of amnesia. To undo the spell, they're hunting and killing the Sorcerers in the Hole, hoping that eventually they'll kill the right one. But when En, the head Sorcerer, gets word of a lizard-man slaughtering his people, he sends a crew of "cleaners" into the Hole, igniting a war between two worlds.
The manga inspired an anime that premiered on January 12 on Tokyo MX. The anime streams in Japan on Netflix, and Netflix premiered the show before its premiere on Japanese television. The anime will have 12 television episodes plus six new "Ma no Omake" (Magic Bonus) original video anime episodes. The bonus episodes will have a total runtime of about 30 minutes. The series' second Blu-ray Disc box set will include the bonus episodes when in ships on June 17.
Yuichiro Hayashi (Garo the Animation, Garo: Divine Flame, Kakegurui) is directing the anime at MAPPA. Hiroshi Seko (Banana Fish, Mob Psycho 100, Vinland Saga) is in charge of series composition. Tomohiro Kishi (91 Days, Garo -Vanishing Line-) is designing the characters. [K]NoW_NAME (Sakura Quest, Fairy gone) are composing the music.
(K)NoW_NAME will perform the anime's new ending theme song "D.D.D.D." They also performed the opening theme song "Welcome to Chaos" and the first ending song "Who am I."

New Death Note Manga Coming in February
Cover art has been published from the new chapter of the Death Note manga, which is returning after twelve years.
Gaming magazine Famitsu revealed the cover art as drawn by Takeshi Obata, which shows Shinigami Ryuk alongside schoolboy genius Minoru Tanaka (not to be confused with the professional wrestler of the same name):
The new chapter is to be published in the February 4th edition of Jump Square and will be 87 pages long. It is the first installment in the series since a one-shot release in 2008.
Tsugumi Ohba will also be returning to write the manga.

Hataraku Saibou Baby Announced
It has been revealed that another Hataraku Saibou spin-off manga, named Hataraku Saibou Baby, will begin publishing later this month.
Hataraku Saibou Baby will follow the story of the cells inside the body of a 40-week-old fetus approaching the date of its birth, and will use chibi designs for many of its anthropomorphic cell characters.
The spin-off manga will be published in Kodansha’s Morning magazine, starting with the October 17th issue, and will be drawn by Yasuhiro Fukuda.
Hataraku Saibou has already spawned a long-list of spin-offs, including Hataraku Saikin (Bacteria at Work) and Hataraku Kesshouban-chan (Platelets at Work).

Female Mangaka: “Feminists are Ugly Losers!”
“White propaganda” mangaka Toshiko Hasumi has once again courted controversy by saying that feminists are ugly inside and out, imitating men because they are no good at being women.
The Ibaraki-based mangaka made her comments in response to a feminist who railed against high heels. Hasumi criticized feminists for being lazy about their appearance due to having warped personalities, rendering them unappealing to men, whom they eventually come to see as enemies.
Hasumi added that this leads to them seeing themselves to be “failures” as women, causing them to reject femininity and embrace living like men:

Coronavirus Patient Recovers After Watching Anime
Twenty-one-year-old Tiger Ye, a Chinese citizen living in Wuhan (the epicenter of the COVID-19 Coronavirus), has managed to survive the illness, the man explaining that he watched anime to try and provide himself with spiritual support.
The man originally contracted the virus around the beginning of January, and by the end of the month found himself violently ill, exhibiting a high fever, shivers, and extreme fits of coughing.
Tiger Ye’s recount of his illness and how watching anime and his passion for IdolMaster seiyuu Ayaka Ohashi helped to keep his spirits up on the way to recovery:
By 26 January getting up had become extremely difficult and I was shivering with cold. I felt I was having a high fever, and I was: 39C. Reports later said that the situation could develop extremely fast in the middle stage, but before I knew it, by that evening the fever was gone. It felt like having been to hell and back. That period from 21 January to the 26th was the worst time. I coughed so bad my stomach was hurting and my back ached. Those were some of the worst days in my life.
>It was then that I realised I needed some spiritual support or maybe I couldn’t make it. So I watched my favourite anime show and seeing their normal, happy lives, I thought I may have to say goodbye to this life forever. But watching the show, the heroine had troubles in the first half, but she finally made it and succeeded in her career.
>You see, I was going to fly to Japan in mid-February to go to a concert by Ayaka Ohashi, a Japanese voice actress and anime artist, but with the lockdown I thought everything might be cancelled. I had attended her solo performance last year, and after watching her I had decided I wanted to make a career out of managing voice actors. So watching the show, I thought: I must make it if I want to see her next concert alive. This really encouraged me and gave me some relief, along with the medicine. I dreamed twice that week that I met her.

Aniplex debuted a teaser commercial and visual to announce the original anime Warlords of Sigrdrifa (Senyoku no Sigrdrifa) on Sunday. The narration says, "With iron wings unfurled, the girl takes off..."
Novelist Tappei Nagatsuki (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-) is supervising and writing the series scripts, and manga creator and illustrator Takuya Fujima (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid) is drafting the original character designs. Takaaki Suzuki is in charge of the world-building and research, after performing similar roles for Strike Witches and Girls und Panzer and later co-creating High School Fleet.
Nagatsuki noted that he has been a longtime anime fan whose dream was to have his creations adapted into anime. This time, however, he gets to create a story specifically for an original anime instead of an anime adaptation. He added that he likes both strong girls, and the men who love strong girls.
Suzuki said that right after the High School Fleet television anime, Aniplex gave him an offer: "Next up, the skies." He then began the world-building that became the basis for this project.
Giant advertising on the wall of Tokyo's Akihabara Radio Kaikan building is promoting the anime from March 1 to March 14.

Gal to Kyōryū Anime's Video Previews Opening Song
The official website for the television anime and live-action series adaptations of Moriko Mori and Cota Tomimura's Gal to Kyōryū (The Gal and the Dinosaur) manga began streaming a promotional video for the anime on Wednesday. The video previews the opening theme song "Kyōryū Agemizawa☆," performed by the anime's four-member main cast unit "Kyoryū Friends."
The anime will premiere on Tokyo MX and BS11 on April 4 at 25:00 (effectively April 5 at 1:00 a.m.). The series will then premiere on Animax on April 5, Tochigi TV on April 8, and The Sapporo Television Broadcasting Co., Ltd. on April 9. Additionally, the anime will stream on various services in Japan.
The anime's cast includes Miyuri Shimabukuro as Kaede, Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaede's friend Yamada, Youki Kudou as Kaede's senior colleague at her part-time job, and Seiichirō Yamashita as Kaede's boyfriend Shōta.
Jun Aoki (Pop Team Epic) is serving as series script supervisor and series director. Tōru Kanegae is the sound director, Yasumasa Koyama is credited for sound effects, Glovision is the sound producer, and Gin (Busted Rose) is composing the music. King Records is the music producer. Kotaro Sudo and Shin Furukawa are the chief producers, and Riko Koarai and Akira Yonezawa are producers. Space Neko Company and Kamikaze Douga are credited for animation production on the anime.
The manga's parallel live-action adaptation has Kotaro Sudo in charge of series scripts, and HALO in charge of production. Entertainer 8467 (Nana Yashiro) is playing Kaede in the live-action series. The live-action version's opening song is the same as the anime.
The manga's story begins when a gyaru named Kaede picks up a dinosaur and begins living with it in her room. The dinosaur eats human food, watches TV, and even enjoys being fashionable.
Mori and Tomimura, a married couple, launched the manga in Kodansha's Young Magazine in October 2018. Kodansha published the manga's third compiled book volume on February 6.
Tomimura is the creator of several manga series including the four-panel essay manga Bokutachi LGBT (We are LGBT) and Jitsuroku! Tō-san Densetsu (Reality! Dad's Legend). Mori's Sayonara, High School (Good—by, High School) manga runs on Akita Publishing's Manga Cross website.

Rent-A-Girlfriend Anime's Character Video Highlights Chizuru
The official website for the television anime adaptation of Reiji Miyajima's Kanojo, Okarishimasu (Rent-A-Girlfriend) manga began streaming a character promotional video for the series on Sunday. The video previews the "girlfriend" character Chizuru Mizuhara.
Amamiya and Yūki are reprising their roles from a promotional video that celebrated the release of the fifth manga volume in 2018.
Kazuomi Koga (Rainy Cocoa, Welcome to Rainy Color) is directing the anime at TMS Entertainment, and Mitsutaka Hirota (Anime-Gataris, Nanbaka, The Prince of Tennis II) is supervising the series scripts. Kanna Hirayama is designing the characters, and HYADAIN is composing the music.
Kodansha Comics is publishing the manga in English, and it describes the story:

Second ‘Gundam Reconguista in G’ Anime Compilation Film DVD/BD Release Delayed
We learned back in November 2018 that Sunrise has a lot of plans in store for the 40th-anniversary of Gundam. One of those plans was for a compilation film being produced for the Gundam Reconguista in G project which is being done as a five-film run. The second film was coming up at the end of this month on March 27th, 2020 but now the Japanese side has notified retailers of a change. This film is being bumped back to a May 27th, 2020 release date with no changes to it otherwise.
The main editions are:
BD LE: 8,800 yen
BD: 6,800 yen
DVD: 5,800 yen
Extras for the limited edition, which are not subtitled, include 2 Short Interview Clips with General Director Tomino, Documentary Video on Yoshiyuki Tomino Part 1, 3 “Mobile Suit School” Short Videos.

Plot concept: The new era begins!
The turbulent era known as the Universal Century has ended. Now, mankind looks towards prosperity and peace in the new era known as the Regild Century (R.C.). One of the most important resources in this era is the Capital Tower – a space elevator which towers over the land connecting Earth to space. Its purpose, to transport the Photon Batteries the Earth relies on for power. It is worshipped as a holy place.
Tasked with protecting the tower, one day on a practice mission, young Capital Guard cadet, Bellri Zenam is attacked by a high-performance G-Self Mobile Suit. Despite having never before encountered the G-Self, he feels a strange connection to it and its pilot, a space pirate called Aida Surugan.

Studio Colorido's Original Anime Film Nakitai Watashi wa Neko o Kaburu Reveals Trailer, Visual, More Cast
Studio Colorido revealed a new trailer, visual, and more cast on Tuesday for its second feature-length anime film Nakitai Watashi wa Neko o Kaburu (Wanting to Cry, I Pretend to Be a Cat).
The above video reveals and previews the film's theme song "Hana ni Bōrei" (A Ghost for a Flower) by Yorushika.
The new cast includes Kōichi Yamadera as Cat Storekeeper (left above) and Hiroaki Ogi (from comedian duo OgiYahagi) as Homeroom Teacher Kusugi-sensei (right).
The film will open in Japan on June 5.
The original story about finding one's true self is set in Tokoname, Aichi and centers on Miyo "Muge" Sasaki. She is a peculiar second-year junior high student who has fallen in love with her classmate Kento Hinode. Muge resolutely pursues Kento every day, but he takes no notice of her. Nevertheless, while carrying a secret she can tell no one, Muge continues to pursue Kento. Muge discovers a magic mask that allows her to transform into a cat named Tarō. The magic lets Muge get close to Kento, but eventually it may also make her unable to transform back to a human.
The "Neko o Kaburu" in the film's title literally means "put on a cat," but it typically functions as a figure of speech related to deception or pretending.
Mirai Shida (The Secret World of Arrietty's Arrietty, The Wind Rises' Kayo Horikoshi, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes' Melissa Shield) is playing Miyo (seen left in image below) and Tarō. Natsuki Hanae (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba's Tanjirō Kamado, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.'s Reita Toritsuka, Digimon Adventure tri.'s Taichi Yagami) is playing Kento (seen right in image below).
Junichi Sato (Sailor Moon, Aria the Animation, Princess Tutu) and Tomotaka Shibayama (animation director for Blue Exorcist, Le Chevalier D'Eon) are co-directing the film at Studio Colorido (Typhoon Noruda, Penguin Highway, Fastening Days). Mari Okada (Maquia - When the Promised Flower Blooms, anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day) is writing the script.
Studio Colorido's Pokémon: Twilight Wings net anime shorts debuted on YouTube on January 15. The series will have a total of seven five-minute episodes, and one new episode will debut every month.

Hiiragi Sisters From Lucky Star Are Immortalized in Man-Hole Cover for Kuki City’s 10th Anniversary
Kuki City is a popular spot for fans of the Lucky Star TV anime
Even 13 years on, Lucky Star still holds a place in the hearts of many, including Kuki City, which was featured in the TV anime from Kyoto Animation. Kuki City’s Washinomiya Shrine is the workplace for the Hiiragi sisters, Kagami and Tsukasa, who work as shrine maidens for the Shinto Shrine. For Kuki City’s 10th anniversary, a man-hole cover featuring the twins was unveiled, looking for a street to call home.
Kuki City came about as the merging of the previous Kuki City, and the towns of Kurihashi and Washimiya, which was where Washinomiya Shrine is situated. As one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan - dating back to the Kamakura period, somewhere between 1185 and 1333 –, the shrine sees 100,000 visitors per year, which rose thanks to the shrine being featured in the opening of Lucky Star. Since the TV anime debuted, the surrounding area has adopted the Hiiragi sisters as unofficial mascots, helping drive tourism into the area.
Alongside the unveiling of the Hiiragi sisters, a second man-hole cover was shown off, featuring characters from the Railway Daughter promotional series, Akane Kurihashi and Minami Kurihashi, both named after stations on the Tobu Nikko Line. Minami Kurihashi’s voice actor for her Drama CD's is Aya Hirano, best known for her work as Konata in Lucky Star and Haruhi in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Water valve versions of both covers will also be displayed when the manhole covers get places in the festivities surrounding the 10th Anniversary of Kuki City.

We don’t even know which companies are involved or how much is at stake to a degree. Moreover, Funi hates fanservice yet still distributes series with it (albeit censored). There’s no news about this in Japanese media, and China will keep the lead for spending the most on it, Corona-Chan be damned.
The real implications will be for accessibility. It seems like anime licensors like Netflix, Funimation, and Crunchyroll are now in an arms race to see who can provide the best (worst) subscription services. It's obviously not good, but also the same shit we've been seeing with western TV and movies for a while now. I can only see it ending poorly in the long run.
